GSCSNJ impac t Report

2017

Letter Dear Girl Scout Family & Friends, 2017 was an amazing year for Girl Scouts of Central & Southern New Jersey (GSCSNJ), thanks to you! Our council looks back on 2017 with a sense of great pride, knowing that our collective work is impacting the lives of girls in a powerful way. We look forward to 2018 with anticipation of the great things our G.I.R.L.s (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ will do. In 2017, we served 18,668 girls, spanning 9 counties and 57 Service Units. These troops are supported by over 10,000 adult members, including over 2,500 Troop Leaders. Every day, our volunteers take action to provide girls with experiences that they may not have had if they were not involved with Girl Scouts. Experiences that better their lives, their communities and the world. We’ve seen girls blossom into young leaders, entrepreneurs, STEM enthusiasts, and role models who discover they can do so much more than they ever thought possible.

Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ Membership Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey is one of 110 councils chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA for the purpose of bringing the Girl Scout program to all girls ages 5 through 17.

None of this would be possible without our incredible volunteers, supportive community and corporate partners, engaged and encouraging parents, and, of course, our astounding Girl Scouts. On behalf of Girl Scouts of Central & Southern New Jersey, we applaud each of you for all you’ve done, and continue to do! Our staff, Board of Directors, and — most importantly — our girls feel your support every day. With your continued support and engagement, we plan for 2018 with excitement to provide exemplary leadership experiences and lifelong skills that move the mission of the Girl Scouts forward. We look confidently into the future, knowing that GSCSNJ is uniquely positioned to help girls realize that nothing is out of reach when you’re a Girl Scout. In Girl Scouts,

At Girl Scouts, we help girls empower themselves and unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™!

How? Through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience — a collection of engaging, challenging, and fun activities like earning badges, going on awesome trips, selling cookies, exploring science, getting outdoors, and doing community service projects. At Girl Scouts, girls lead their own adventures and team up with others in an all-girl environment to choose the exciting, hands-on activities that interest them most. Along the way, G.I.R.L.s gain important skills in four areas that form the foundation of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience: • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) • Outdoors • Life Skills • Entrepreneurship The Result? A Lifetime of Leadership! In fact, being a Girl Scout helps girls thrive in five key ways.

As a Girl Scout, she: • Develops a strong sense of self • Displays positive values • Seeks challenges and learns from setbacks • Forms and maintains healthy relationships • Learns to identify and solve problems in her community Delivering Fun with Purpose To bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to life, activities are led by girls themselves. Girls come up with their own ideas, build teams, and experience the joy of making a positive impact. At Girl Scouts, she will: Discover: Find out who she is, what she cares about, and what her talents are. Connect: Collaborate with other people, both locally and globally, to learn from others and expand her horizons. Take Action: Do something to make the world a better place.

What is a G.I.R.L.?

She’s bold, honest, and determined to succeed. Goal oriented and ambitious, she’s also a life-long learner who believes no challenge is too difficult!

Thinking outside the box is her specialty, so she’s always looking for a creative way to take action. She definitely knows how to get things done.

Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and to embrace the unfamiliar. She’s ready to step up and break the mold if that’s what it takes.

She’s confident, responsible, and committed to changing the world for the better—and she’s happiest when others join her in taking the lead!

These are the traits that define girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Success Factor! The Girl Scout Impact Study New research finds that Girl Scouts is linked to success! Girl Scouts shine above their peers in leadership, academics, career aspirations and hope for the future: LEADERSHIP OUTCOMES. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to: Have a strong sense of self (80% vs. 68%) Have positive values (75% vs. 59%) Seek challenges and learn from setbacks (62% vs. 42%) Develop and maintain healthy relationships (60% vs. 43%) Exhibit community problem-solving skills (57% vs. 28%)

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to: Earn “excellent” grades (53% vs. 45%) Expect to graduate high school (88% vs. 83%) Expect to graduate college (70% vs. 60%) CAREER ASPIRATIONS. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to: Desire a career in STEM (26% vs 14%). HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to: Expect to have a great future (73% vs. 64%).

4 IN 5 Girl Scouts are leaders

compared to 2 in 5 non-Girl Scouts

When it comes to benefiting girls, Girl Scouts delivers the goods: A VARIETY OF FUN AND CHALLENGING ACTIVITIES. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to participate in: Healthy activities, like exercise and eating right (82% vs. 69%) Leadership activities when working in a group (79% vs. 44%) Community service activities, like volunteering (79% vs. 37%) Outdoor activities, like hiking or camping (76% vs. 43%) Money management activities, like how to spend and save (65% vs. 36%) STEM activities, like science experiments and building robots (60% vs. 35%) SUPPORTIVE ADULT RELATIONSHIPS. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to have an adult in their lives who helps them: Pursue their goals (74% vs. 67%) Think about their future (71% vs. 66%) ACTIVE LEARNING. Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to: Work collaboratively with others on group projects (86% vs. 61%) Engage in hands-on activities and reflect on what worked/didn’t work (81% vs. 59%) Take an active role in decision making (80% vs. 51%)

Girl Scouts can buffer girls against negative outcomes at a crucial time in their lives. While it is common for a girl’s sense of self to decline in middle school, Girl Scouts exhibit a slight lift in theirs during this time.

During middle school, nonGirl Scouts experience a dramatic drop in interest and involvement in their communities, whereas Girl Scouts’ desire to solve problems in their communities increases.

Also at this time, Girl Scouts remain confident about their futures, whereas non-Girl Scouts are more likely to question theirs.

METHODOLOGY: An online survey was conducted by the research firm Decision Analyst and consisted of 3,014 girls (1,507 Girl Scouts, 1,507 non-Girl Scouts) aged 5–18. Quotas were set by age, race/ethnicity, region, and family income to achieve a nationally representative sample. For more information, contact gsresearch@girlscouts.org.
