Located just over an hour from Canberra, the nation’s capital, but uniquely situated amongst stunning rolling hills, orchards, cherry blossoms, canola and wheat. The beautiful Hilltops Region is known for its award-winning food, wine and produce, wide open spaces and amazing sunsets.

Including the thriving towns of Young, Harden Murrumburrah and Boorowa along with many unique villages such as Jugiong, the flourishing and diverse Hilltops has something to offer everyone.

With excellent accommodation options along with great food and wine, Hilltops is a convenient and welcoming destination for those wanting to enjoy fresh local produce, explore rich history of gold and agriculture, discover the natural beauty of the region along with wide open spaces and a place to relax and unwind. WELCOME TO THE HILLTOPS REGION Nestled to the west of Sydney and north of Canberra, the Hilltops Region offers our visitors an abundance of tourist activities including delicious food, wine tasting, shopping, picturesque walking trails and relaxation. Our beautiful towns and villages are easily reached from the Hume Highway and provide an opportunity to slow down and unwind while immersed in our rural way of life.

The Wiradjuri people, known as the people of the three rivers, are indigenous to the South West of New South Wales. The Wiradjuri nation is the largest cultural footprint in NSW and second largest geographically in Australia. European settlement in the region saw gold discoveries and brought skills to develop wool, pastoral, mining, agricultural and horticultural industries. Our rich cultural history is celebrated by thousands of people at festivals held throughout the year. Travel to towns and villages alive with Wiradjuri stories and those of the British, Chinese, and Europeans who settled here.

DRIVE SCENIC ROADS BETWEEN OUR TOWNS AND VILLAGES THROUGH ORCHARDS, GRAPEVINES AND OLIVE GROVES. Rural life and the landscape continue to change with the seasons; sweet white and pink blossoms of almond, plum, apple and cherry and fields of green change to bright gold of canola and pale gold of wheat.

A walk at dusk or dawn is the perfect time to spot kangaroos and wallabies, the dramatic hills and forest ranges provide countless opportunities to spot birds and other native animals and our fields are full of livestock.

British settlement was initially forged by James Hassell and the family of Hamilton Hume, an explorer widely known for the Hume and Hovell expedition that established a route between Sydney and Melbourne.

Commemorated in his name, the Hume Highway runs for 840 kilometres between Sydney and Melbourne. Irish settlement came in the 1820s when cousins Roger Corcoran and Ned Ryan were transported to the colony of NSW for 14 years in exchange for a guilty plea for rioting in County Tipperary Ireland.

Through their assignments to work for Samuel Hassell (James Hassell’s relative) and James Meehan, Corcoran and Ryan progressed their citizenships and settled in Boorowa and Galong and encouraged settlers from Ireland to migrate to the region.

The annual Boorowa Irish Woolfest, held in March, proudly celebrates the village’s Irish history, and the local sheep and wool industry.

Irish music and dancing, street parade and boutique markets attract thousands of visitors to the area. Running of the Sheep is a highlight of the festival with sheep and sheep dogs running through Boorowa’s Main Street. A sheep is shorn with old time shears on the shearing shack and the fleece thrown on stage at the ecumenical Blessing of the Fleece, a spiritual thanksgiving for the fine wool of the region. The festival provides Boorowa with an opportunity to share its fine merino wool and renowned studs with visitors and the local community.

Stay a while Visitors to the area have a number of accommodation options available to suit all tastes and budgets. Located beside the Boorowa River, Boorowa Caravan Park is a short walk to the main street. Surrounded by parkland, it provides visitors with a beautiful location to relax or explore the surrounds via walking trails. Pets are welcome as long as the park’s rules are followed.

Wantana Country Cottage Farm, located 10km out of town, provides guests with spectacular views from every window.

Situated on a 1,000 acre property. Fire up the BBQ, pour a glass of local wine and take in the breathtaking landscape. A scenic 90 minute drive from Boorowa, Reflections Holiday Park Grabine Lakeside provides bush camping, powered sites and cabins adjacent to Wyangala Dam. Dog friendly camping and caravan sites enable every member of your family to enjoy this beautiful destination.

THE ANNUAL BOOROWA IRISH WOOLFEST, HELD IN MARCH, PROUDLY CELEBRATES THE VILLAGE’S IRISH HISTORY, AND THE LOCAL SHEEP AND WOOL INDUSTRY.

Local favourites Boorowa Ex Services & Citizens Club, known as the ‘Best Little Club in the West’ has been serving patrons delicious meals and cold beverages since 1948. The outdoor veranda and BBQ area are frequented by locals and visitors and is perfect on a sunny day. The Marsden St General serves aromatic coffee and yummy baked treats. Browse the display of jams, oils, vinegars and soaps, the perfect gift for any occasion. Located in the Old Court House Building.

Boorowa Arts and Crafts Co-op provides Devonshire Tea in the Magistrates Tea Room and sells local handmade products. Open seven days a week the visitors’ centre can organise day tours of Boorowa for groups as required.

A short one minute stroll down the main street takes visitors to the Boorowa and District Historical Society and Museum. Housed in the old George Patterson Store, constructed in 1882 and the last pisé building in Boorowa, the Museum is home to a historic clothing collection of Edwardian gowns and accessories once worn by the ladies of the Hamilton Hume family. A few minutes’ walk along Marsden Street Home Finch specialises in local designers, natural products and hand crafted treasures. At the opposite end of the main street, Boorowa Tractors sell a range of imported farming equipment and machinery essential to our rural way of life.

The Old Court House grounds are home to the Boorowa Makers & Growers Community Market on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9am – 1pm.

Boorowa War Memorial, designed by R. Richardson was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1933, was originally erected to honour those who served in World War I. Plaques that recognise World War II and other conflicts have since been added. The octagonal building is an unusual style for Australia: a terracotta-roofed English Georgian building.

The clock tower dominates the vista along the main street and from the bridge approach across the Boorowa River.

The bridge is lined with iconic English Elm trees, first planted in Australia in the 19th century. The English Elm changes with the seasons. As you leave Boorowa for Murringo village and the town of Young, you may see the deep green leaves of summer or striking yellow autumn foliage.

JUGIONG On the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, the second longest river in Australia, the village of Jugiong provides the perfect entry point to the Hilltops Region.

THE SPEED AND BUSTLE OF THE HIGHWAY IS QUICKLY FORGOTTEN AS THE ROAD TO JUGIONG GENTLY SLOPES INTO TOWN.

ONLY 30 MINUTES NORTH OF GUNDAGAI, 40 MINUTES WEST OF YASS AND JUST OFF THE HUME HIGHWAY, A VISIT TO JUGIONG IS A MUST. The speed and bustle of the Highway is quickly forgotten as the road to Jugiong gently slopes into town. Riverside Drive mirrors the flowing Murrumbidgee River and is the perfect place to stop for some retail therapy and a meal.

Dishes on The Sir George Hotel’s menu showcase fresh, local and seasonal produce seven nights a week for dinner and Tuesday to Sunday for lunch. With an artisan bakery onsite, breads and cakes are made using traditional techniques and baked in-house in wood fired ovens. Enjoy all the seasons have to offer including lunch in the garden during summer, or snuggling by the open fire on a cold winter night. First constructed in 1852, the hotel is rich in history including ‘Ben Hall Cottage’, a stone cottage at the rear of the pub named after bushranger Ben Hall who, along with his gang, operated in the area in the 1860s.

Not just a great place to dine, Jugiong has a number of accommodation options to choose from. The Sir George Hotel provides guests with two boutique accommodation options; 1845 stone stables have been restored and renovated into luxurious rooms and their Black Barns are a modern twist on the original out-building that once stood on the land.

Campers can pitch a tent beside the river at one of Australia’s best riverside camping spots.

A town rich in architectural history, the churches of Jugiong are set beside rolling hilltops. Built in the mid and late 19th Century, St John Evangelist Catholic Church and Christ Church Anglican are surrounded by beautiful trees, possibly as old as the buildings.

The Roman Catholic Cemetery on the eastern edge of the town is home to a grave-stone wrought by the famous marble-mason Rusconi of Gundagai. Jugiong’s cemetery for noncatholics is located along Back-Jugiong Road, not far from the Public School.

Recycled European Oak is expertly crafted into stunning custom-made furniture by Woodstock Resources. Sourced from sustainable locations across Europe and working closely with a local mill, timber is transformed into floor boards, parquetry and custom wood joinery.

Sample delicious locally produced wines at Jugiong Wine Cellar providing and selling wines from southern NSW, including the wine regions of Hilltops, Canberra, Gundagai and Tumbarrumba. The Cellar also sells artworks and pottery.

On the banks of the Murrumbidgee Quirky Crow, built in the 1950s, began as an Ampol Service Station. Now owned by Brian and Tricia, this gallery and studio is a colourful and eclectic space that showcases Brian’s paintings, sketches and cartoons and Tricia’s handmade ceramics. In a unique and entertaining change of gear, ask Brian to book you the Jugiong Country Experience.

Your tour begins with a bungling bushranger hold up. The bushranger quickly morphs into your charismatic tour guide who will enthral you with stories of Aboriginal history, our pioneering past and bushranger tales.

Harden Railway Station

Founded in late 1820, the township of Murrumburrah was the first established out of the two. Sitting either side of the Murrimboola Creek, the area was home to the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people. Gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s, technology advancement with industrialised ploughing and harvesting and railway junctions populated towns.

The station of Harden was established a mile up the road in 1877 and served as a major point on the Sydney-Melbourne line. In 1912 a branch line was opened, rail workers moved to the Demondrille Shire area and in turn the population expanded. The year 1975 saw the merger of Murrumburrah Municipal Council and Demondrille Shire Council and the formation of Harden Shire Council. A history and identity treasured by our local community, a large sign distinguishes where one town ended and the other began.

Neill Street, Harden’s town centre, is the commercial precinct of the twin towns.

Amble along the picturesque main street, adorned with mature date palms and shade trees. Browse fashionable country boutiques, crafts, homewares and coffee shops and there’s also a great butcher. Early 20th century architecture houses banks, a Mechanics’ Institute and Post Office.

Nestled between the town centres is a garden centre for those with green thumbs, parks and our local swimming pool provide an excellent spot to cool off on a hot day.

Discover our history Early architecture of Murrumburrah is reflective of the Italianate style, a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture and seen most notably in the elegant red brick courthouse built in 1880.

Visit the Murrumburrah Museum, formerly the Murrumburrah Institute, and marvel at the magnificent bar from the Harden Station refreshment room. The Light Horse Memorial honours the 1st Australian Horse and Australian Light Horse. Further down Vernon Street, over the heritage footbridge that spans the SydneyMelbourne railway line is St Mary’s Catholic Church, the oldest church in town.

Local favourites Looking for something delicious to eat? Murrumburrah’s Albury Street has an assortment of options. Sourced from the best local produce, Barnes Store Emporium & Café serves Byron Bay Coffee, teas from Harney’s of New York and a selection of seasonal dishes that accompany their regular favourites. Across the road and established in 1861, The Light Horse Hotel provides both dining and accommodation options. Renovated in 2018, this historic country hotel offers a friendly bar, dining room, guest lounge and 12 guest rooms.

Harden’s House of Honey produces and packs one of Australia’s most extensive range of pure raw straight-line honeys. A range of bee inspired goodies including beeswax candles, Manuka Honey skin care products and kids bee apparel are also available.

Further retail therapy can be sought at The Muddy Duck. Located in Murrumburrah’s old Post Office, The Muddy Duck stocks giftware, clothing and homewares; shop for a gift or something for yourself.

Stay a while Harden Country Motel has recently undergone a complete transformation.

The Motel features immaculately presented rooms with crisp white linen and friendly country service.

Just down the road, Harden Caravan Park’s accommodation options include caravan and camping sites, and cabins. Harden’s Olympic sized swimming pool is next door and open to the public November to March.

On the opposite side of town, Heggaton artHouse Apartments offers three beautifully appointed, self-contained, one bedroom apartments. Built in the late 1800s for Dr Rupert Heggaton’s surgery, Heggaton artHouse was returned to a private residence upon his retirement.

YOUNG Located in the north-west of the Hilltops Region, and less than two hours’ drive from Canberra, is the town of Young.

Known as the Cherry Capital of Australia, Young is an easy destination to reach situated on the Olympic Highway.

A HANDSOME COUNTRY TOWN IN A DEEP VALLEY, YOUNG OFFERS THE FULL URBAN EXPERIENCE, WITH COMFY ACCOMMODATION, AWARD-WINNING CAFÉS AND BOUTIQUES SET AMONG GRAND 19TH CENTURY BUILDINGS. Prior to European settlement, a family group of the indigenous Wiradjuri Nation, the Burrowmunditroy people, lived in the region.

Burrangong Station was established in 1826

by James White, the first European settler to the area. Gold was first discovered in 1860 and saw an influx of immigrants from Europe and China, all seeking their fortunes. Exminers from Croatia planted Australia’s first commercial cherry crop and today, Young is known as the ‘Cherry Capital’ of Australia.

Visiting Young in Spring is reminiscent of a European landscape with patterned olive groves and blossoming cherries, plums, apricots and almonds.

Stay a while With so many things to see and do, stay longer than a day, and choose from a number of accommodation options. The Colonial Motel & Serviced Apartments, offering two bedroom apartments, motel rooms and executive suites, is walking distance to the CBD and minutes from restaurants, pubs and shops. Fresh local honey can be purchased from the Hilltops Council Visitor Centre in the elegant 1885 Railway Station building. It’s impossible to leave Poppa’s Fudge and Jam Factory without tasting the huge range of delicate chocolates and tempting lollies as well as their famous freshly made fudge.

The Hilltops Region Wine Cellar is also located at the Visitor Information Centre where you can choose from a large assortment of Hilltops Region wines.

A 10 minute drive from the centre of town is Grove Estate Wines. Established in 1989 by the Flanders, Kirkwood and Mullany families, Grove Estate Wines produces award-winning cool climate wines on red volcanic soils. Soak in the amazing views while you enjoy wine tasting and platters at their multi-award-winning cellar door.

Back in town and open seven days a week, Young Services Club offers guests bistro dining, coffee shop, Dooley’s Bar, function and conference facilities, alfresco dining on the outdoor terrace and a children’s play area.

Discover our history Call into the Visitor Information Centre, situated in the historic former Young Railway Station, to obtain local knowledge of the town and make the most of your visit. Built in 1885 and a heritage-listed site, the Centre has a range of souvenirs and local products including jams, olive oil and our award-winning Hilltops Wines.

Take in the history and architecture of local buildings including the heritage-listed City Bank building and magnificent churches. Young Town Hall is one of the largest in country NSW, its clock tower is a magnificent World War I memorial.

Electricity was installed into the streets and homes of the township in 1889, one of the first Australian towns to do so. The Honourable Chris Watson, member for Young, served as Australia’s third, and the Labor Government’s first, Prime Minister in 1904.

On advice from the local Wiradjuri people, James White’s homestead was built in 1831 on a slope 15km from town. The ewes of Young’s first European settler gave birth in the sheltered area known as Lambing Flat.

Thousands of miners flocked to the fields to seek their fortunes when gold was discovered on Lambing Flat in 1861. Prospecting was not peaceful and many Chinese miners were attacked and driven from the goldfields. Police jailed the ringleaders and a series of violent riots followed. The Riot Act was read outside the wooden jail, beside the police paddock, now known as Carrington Park. This historic heritage listed park is now a place of recreation and reflection.

A reconciliation tree reminds us that the Wiradjuri people lived on the land long before European settlers arrived. A monument to the White family, the first European settlers in the area, is also a reminder that Australia’s First Nation Peoples are credited with helping save the pastoral industry. European station hands abandoned their jobs to search for gold and First Nation People worked on the pastoral stations, managing sheep and cattle.

Formerly known as Young Park, the name was changed to Carrington Park to mark its namesake, Lord Carrington’s visit in 1889.

A British Liberal politician and aristocrat, Lord Carrington was Governor of New South Wales from 1885 to 1890. His historic visit ceremonially turned on the council’s threephase power supply for domestic, commercial, and municipal use; Young was the first town in Australia, and the entire British Empire, to adopt this power method.

Endless adventures are to be had on the play equipment, sit back and relax on the beautiful shady lawns with a picnic or utilise the BBQ area. The band rotunda is the centrepiece of the park and still used by the town’s band for performances, it also commemorates the first bandmaster. The gates to the park remember the wartime sacrifice of bandsmen and other memorial plaques throughout the park pay homage to our significant people and events.

Elms and Deodar Cedars, some over 100 years old, provide a perfect shady spot to read a book.

Built in 1886, The Great Courthouse was given to the education department in 1924 becoming part of the school. The old original town school opened in 1883 and is now home to the Lambing Flat Folk Museum. Managed by the Young Historical Society, the museum features many artefacts, stories and memorabilia relating to Young’s history including a historically significant banner that was carried by the miners during the anti-Chinese riots in 1861.

Gothic style architecture can be seen in the Anglican Church, designed by architect Edmund Blacket, built in 1893 and St Mary’s Catholic Church, erected 1874, made of local granite with a Welsh slate roof. Built in 1909, the Methodist Church is designed in an arts and craft style and the Presbyterian Church was built in 1920 of greenish grey feldspar quartz.

THE LAMBING FLAT FOLK MUSEUM FEATURES MANY ARTEFACTS, STORIES AND MEMORABILIA RELATING TO YOUNG’S HISTORY INCLUDING A HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT BANNER THAT WAS CARRIED BY THE MINERS DURING THE ANTICHINESE RIOTS IN 1861.

Located at the Chinaman’s Dam reserve, the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Garden is a 10 minute drive south-east of the centre of town. Established in 1992, the tranquil garden recognises the contribution of the Chinese community to the settlement of Young in the 1860s, and to the ongoing contributions of the Chinese community to Australia as a nation.

The lakes and picturesque walks make this a popular picnic destination. On the opposite side of town, Clifton House & Gardens built in 1889, is a 10 minute drive north-west. Make a booking for a memorable visit. This historic homestead and stone barn is surrounded by 10 hectares of beautifully maintained gardens.

YOUNG Fresh produce The annual National Cherry Festival is celebrated the first weekend of December, traditionally the height of the cherry picking season. This iconic event has been a Young institution for over 70 years. Showcasing the cherry capital of Australia, the three day festival boasts events and festivities including the National Cherry Festival Street Parade, Christmas Street Market, cherry pie eating championships, cherry pip spitting competition, live music, pipes and drums bands and Young and Region Farmers Market.

Willayoung Orchard is family owned and operated and specialises in tree ripened stonefruit. Purchase fresh fruit picked straight from one of their 5,500 fruit trees.

Buy locally produced wines at the Hilltops Regional Wine Cellar, located at the Young Visitor Information Centre.

Young and Region Farmers Market is held every first, third and fifth Saturday at Anderson Park most of the year. Sample delicious local produce or enjoy brunch barbequed by the local Lions Club. Roadside fruit stalls colour the journey between Young and Wombat.

VILLAGES Rich in history, the origins of our villages come from mining, European settlement, agriculture, post World War I soldier settlement and the development and maintenance of rail networks. The varying styles of architecture provide clues to the timeline of when each village was established.

Monteagle

Koorawatha

Enveloped in orchards and olive groves, the village of Monteagle is 15 minutes north of Young. Touts Lookout is a 15 minute drive from Monteagle along the gravel Scenic Road. Offering stunning panoramic views of the district, it is also a perfect spot for kite flying. Iandra Castle, a 20 minute drive from Monteagle, is open periodically throughout the year. The property was originally purchased in 1878 and over time the homestead has been converted and restored a number of times and is listed on the NSW Heritage Database. Set on a working farm dating back to the 1850s, the Rustic Maze and Country Garden is like stepping back in time.

Wander through the beautifully maintained garden and enjoy a coffee at The Old Shearers Quarters Café.

Open by appointment only for tour groups of 12 or more people, please ensure you call ahead of visiting.

Derived from the Wiradjuri language meaning ‘pine trees’, Koorawatha is a 30 minute drive from Young and 20 minutes from Murringo. Once a prosperous railway junction, the village now moves at a calmer pace.

Originally established in 1884, Hotel Koorawatha serves delicious country pub meals and local wines. Enjoy ice cold beer in the beer garden and stay the night in one of six comfy hotel rooms. A cairn marks the former site of the old Bang Bang Hotel where in 1864, infamous bushranger Ben Hall and his gang engaged in a gun battle with police after trying to steal racehorses.

Visit the Koorawatha Nature Reserve for bush walking and bird watching; birds to be spotted include the chestnut-rumped heathwren and brown-headed honeyeater. Travel through Murringo gap on the 20 minute drive from Koorawatha to Murringo and stop at the small picnic area located next to the Murringo Creek; an ideal place to enjoy lunch and watch the local wildlife.

Wirrimah

Bendick Murrell

The quaint village of Wirrimah is surrounded by plum and olive orchards. Remains of the prune dehydrator, now a private residence, reminds visitors of Wirrimah’s soldier settler history. As you drive along the Scenic Road from Bendick Murrell or from Koorawatha or Monteagle soak in the stunning landscape and spot kangaroos and sheep.

The village of Bendick Murrell, named after the pastoral station on which it was built, is located on the Olympic Highway 20 minutes north-east of Young. Once a railway maintenance settlement, Bendick Murrell is now the region’s equestrian centre and is recognised for its regular events and first-rate recreation ground.

Maimuru

Bribbaree is situated on the northwest edge of the Hilltops Region and just 35 minutes from Young. Visit the monument commemorating five soldiers from Bribbaree who died in World War I. The Rusty Horse Hotel is the heart of this small village and an excellent base for exploring the nearby Weddin Mountains National Park and Ben Hall’s Cave to the east. The annual show, held on the Saturday of the October long weekend, provides a showcase for local talent and produce.

The picturesque village of Maimuru sits on a rise 15 minutes north-west of Young and offers amazing views of the surrounding broad acres and orchards. Settled by soldiers post World War I, its once intensive prune production has given way to olive production. In April 2021, Maimuru Public School housed in a charming wooden building, celebrated their 100 year anniversary.

Bribbaree

Murringo Murringo Village, located approximately 20 minutes from Young and Boorowa, is the oldest village in the region.

A site where gold miners once dug, the village boasts fine stone buildings, including two churches, a cemetery where you can read numerous stories from headstones, Georgian cottages and the schoolhouse built in 1862 that is still educating our children today.

A visit to the Taubman and Webb Trading Post to learn the history of the late Syd Bayliss; renowned bushman, plaiter and whip maker is a must. While here, view leather items made and used by Syd and attend a whip making class and demonstration by Richard Taubman; the attraction’s name-sake who along with his wife Leah, are dedicated to keeping the Trading Post open.

The Trading Post also stocks local Hilltops Honey, and Trandari Wines, both high-quality specialist producers from the Hilltops Region.

Reids Flat The village of Reids Flat is located on the south bank of the Lachlan River, one hour drive north-east of Boorowa. Hidden in the Great Dividing Range, there is a rich indigenous dreaming associated with the valley. Bushrangers were active in the area during the early 1860s; caves within the surrounding rocky mountains provided excellent hiding spots. Local merino sheep wool production is amongst the finest in the world. The village does not have any commercial establishments and the closest shop is 22 kilometres away so bring a picnic.

Rugby Located 25 minutes north-east of Boorowa, Rugby is the eastern most village in the Hilltops Region.

Established when the Walla Walla silver mine was in operation, first settlers to the area cleared dense thick scrub to build their homes.

The ruins of the mining village and old mine-heads serve as lasting reminders of the origins of the town and the mine that was abandoned in 1919. The Rugby Community Hall boasts beautiful brickwork and the early church buildings contribute to the charming streetscape of this village.

Rye Park European settlers arrived to farm the land of Rye Park in the 1840s.

A 15 minute drive south-east of Boorowa, Rye Park was once the site of one of the richest silver mines in NSW. The landscape has also seen periods of mining for tin, but today, the area is known for the production of wool and meat. The school opened in 1876 and the local post office operates from the Uniting Church Hall for one hour a day, four days a week. Hamilton Hume’s family settled in the area in 1865, their homestead now a privately owned working sheep property. The pristine waterways of Pudman Creek run beside the village.

Frogmore

Galong

Copper was first discovered and mined in the village of Frogmore in the 1850s. A 20 minute drive northeast of Boorowa, the area also bore other metals; silver and tungsten.

Striking Granite Tors can be seen in the area around the village. Wyangala Dam is a 30 minute drive north-east.

The lake is a popular sport and recreation destination.

Established in the late 1820s when squatter and former Irish convict Edward ‘Ned’ Ryan built Galong House, the village of Galong is 30 minutes south-west of Boorowa, and 20 minutes from Harden. The town’s limestone open-cut mine has been the major industry since 1885 and today, produces about one quarter of New South Wales’ requirement of agricultural lime.

The walled cemetery, with heritage significance, contains graves dating back to 1854 and Galong Railway Station, originally opened in 1877, is now closed and heritage-listed.

St Clement’s Retreat & Conference Centre is an historic monastery set on more than 300 hectares of rural land and ideal for conferences, workshops, seminars and religious retreats.

Kingsvale North-east of Wombat, and a 10 minute drive from Young, is the village of Kingsvale. Once known as one of the major centres of Hilltops stone fruit industry, Kingsvale boasts several large orchards where you can pick-your-own box of fruit to take home. As you travel the picturesque roads, stop and enjoy a roadside picnic and take in the stunning scenery.

Wombat

The village of Wombat is just a 15 minute drive from Young.

Following the discovery of gold in the 1860s, Wombat was established in 1865 when Chinese miners moved to the area. Home to a population of 225 (according to the last census), Wombat offers antiques and bric-abrac, fresh farmgate produce, and Wombat Cellars stocking locally made liqueurs and Hilltops wines.

The local pub, the Wombat Hotel, has been trading continuously since 1877 and hosts live bands throughout the year.

The Hilltops Region’s climate and rich soils provide all the essentials required for the growing and ripening of stonefruits. While cherries are the main fruit produced in the region, we grow plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, figs, strawberries and olives.

Our trees produce ripening fruit throughout summer. The cherry is the last tree to bloom, which typically happens in late September, and yet the first tree to fruit. From November, through to Christmas (weather dependent), cherries are available. The highlight of the cherry season occurs in the first full weekend of December, at the National Cherry Festival in Young.

TOP TIPS FOR FRUIT PICKING • DRESS TO PICK: wear comfortable, enclosed and flat shoes.

• BRING THE ESSENTIALS: hat, sunscreen, bottled water and insect repellent.

• GET THE TECHNIQUE RIGHT: cherry picking is easy. Carefully twist the stalk of the cherry with your thumb and index finger until it comes away from the tree cleanly. Don’t pull the fruit off the stalks.

• A LITTLE TASTE-TEST IS OK: taste-testing in moderation is allowed, but beware of over-indulgence, it may lead to cherry belly.

• RIPE IS RIGHT: only pick the ripe cherries.

Cherries will only ripen whilst on the tree so be sure to leave the unripe ones behind.

• PICK AND PAY: you pay for the cherries you pick by the kilo.

• FRESHNESS: keep your cherries in a cool place and put them in the fridge as soon as you can.

• RESPECT THE TREES: be careful not to snap branches when picking. Not only will it upset the orchardist, but it will also damage the tree and affect next year’s harvest.

HISTORY & HERITAGE The Wiradjuri people, known as the people of the three rivers and the largest Aboriginal group in New South Wales have inhabited the modern-day state for at least 60,000 years.

European settlers arrived in the 1820s and towns flourished when gold miners from around the world flocked to the area to seek their fortunes. Buildings, churches and homes, from the grand to the humble, are reflective of the region’s architectural heritage.

Wiradjuri stockmen are credited with saving the local pastoral industry during the gold rush when European farmhands left their jobs to seek their fortunes. Young’s courthouse symbolises the state’s commitment to the preservation of peace during the anti-Chinese riots in 1861.

Villages were born from mining and farming ventures, and churches and cemeteries tell stories in stained glass and stone. War memorials commemorate sacrifice and camaraderie, and educational institutions symbolise commitment and aspiration.

Reminders of migration are evident in our vineyards, olive groves, orchards, farm livestock and grand English Elm trees.

Heritage Trail Walks are offered in our major towns with maps available at the region’s Visitor Information Centres.

The contemporary Hilltops wine story goes back to the early 1970s and pioneer vigneron Peter Robertson who realised the natural assets of the elevated slopes around the township of Young. Deep rich loam soils, a cool continental climate and reliable water supply (in most years) create exceptional wine country.

The foundation vineyards were planted predominantly to shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, still the region’s mainstay varieties.

But increasingly, the Hilltops is earning a reputation for its personality-packed wines made from Italian varieties like prosecco, pinot grigio, sangiovese, nebbiolo and most recently, fiano.

Whatever the grape, Hilltops wines typically resonate vibrant individuality — lifted aromatics, concentrated flavours and in the case of the classic red wines, the capacity for mellow ageing.

LAMBING FLAT CHINESE TRIBUTE GARDEN

LAMBING FLAT FOLK MUSEUM

Enjoy a relaxing wander through the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Garden, built to pay tribute to Chinese miners who came to the region during the gold rush period in the 1860s.

The museum houses a valuable collection relating to the early days of Lambing Flat and Burrangong. The Roll Up banner carried during the 1860-61 riots is in a room about the gold rush. There are displays of glass art from Helmut Hiebl, hairdressing memorabilia and a buggy made by John Rogan in 1880.

The gardens include interpretive signage detailing Young’s mining heritage and information on wild birds, fish and wildlife. Picnic facilities, barbeques and toilet facilities are all available making it a perfect stop for lunch.

The Garden is located to the south of Young, 5km from the CBD.

School and coach groups are welcome. Only a short walk from the CBD. Panning equipment can be hired for fossicking enthusiasts.

A FAMILY GUIDE TO THE HILLTOPS REGION Your family will love an escape to the Hilltops Region. With playgrounds, museums, open spaces and the chance to interact with some friendly farm animals, here you can experience country living at its finest.

You will find a playground or two in each of the major town centres of Boorowa, Harden, Young and Jugiong, where the kids can play while mum and dad enjoy a takeaway coffee from one of our many fantastic cafés.

In Boorowa, your family can enjoy a stroll along the Riverside Walk, where if you are lucky, you can spot a platypus or one of the local superb parrots.

Set aside an hour or two for the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Garden in Young. Stroll the gardens and admire the birdlife, and bring your sausages to make use of the barbeque facilities and picnic tables.

The kids will be dazzled with the bright silo art in Harden Murrumburrah, one to tick off the Silo Art trail. A wonderful story is represented by the life-sized statue of ‘Bill the Bastard’, the heroic horse and WWI hero, which will impress the entire family.

In each of the towns you will find a museum with artefacts of the early settlers and the gold rush.

At the Lambing Flat Folk Museum in Young you can even hire gold panning equipment to try your luck at prospecting. Blackguard Gully is a public fossicking site where you can try out the equipment. If you don’t find any gold, you will still be glad you witnessed the interesting landscape and learn the story of what took place in the area during the gold rush.

The Koorawatha Nature Reserve is an exciting area to explore with the kids, especially the Koorawatha Falls.

If visiting during cherry harvest, the kids will love picking their own cherries to take home. Visit Hill Lock and Wombat Heights Orchards, where you can not only pick cherries, but you can also pick strawberries.

You can take a tour around the orchard in a safari style bus and interact with the peacocks, goats, llamas and more!

SCENIC DRIVE NORTH

Take the road less travelled and explore the northern Hilltops Region area. This drive starts in Young and takes you through the village of Monteagle where you will find the intriguing Rustic Maze and Country Garden (pre-booking required).

Monteagle is also home to the Bulla Creek Brewing Co, a local independent brewery. Continuing on from Monteagle you will find one of the best views in the region – Tout’s Lookout. The few kilometres of gravel road to reach it is well worth the effort, as the view will take your breath away.

Spend a relaxing, indulgent day in beautiful Jugiong by the river. Start your day with a scrumptious breakfast from the ever-popular Long Track Pantry, before strolling through its delightful gift shop. A short stop down the road, visit the Quirky Crow to explore the beautiful art and wares on display, and even pre-book an art lesson with Brian, owner and resident artist.

Head back to the main road and join Iandra Road, which is just on the edge of the region. This will take you to the magnificent Iandra Castle, which is privately owned on a working farm.

Check the Open Day schedule, or contact the owners to arrange an appointment to see this Elizabethan style homestead. From here you can take the Tyagong Hall Road back to the Henry Lawson Way, where you can either head back to Young or extend your trip and visit Grenfell.

Prepare yourself for the beautiful offerings at Woodstock Resources – antiques, accessories, and stunning imported European oak furniture, it will be impossible to leave empty handed.

TIP: Take a picnic or refreshments with you, just in case you are visiting outside the opening times of the only café on the route, Circa 1935 in Greenthorpe.

NATURE Jugiong – Harden Murrumburrah – Boorowa – Wyangala Dam Start your Hilltops nature experience just off the Hume Highway at Jugiong.

Once an ancient trading crossroad, Jugiong today is a NSW Top Town finalist with breathtaking natural scenery and ample terrain for exercise and play.

It’s a half hour jaunt to Boorowa, an area known as home to the Superb Parrot and what better location for a spot of bird watching. Don’t be surprised if you find apostle birds, kangaroos and wallabies as you immerse yourself in the rural landscape. The Boorowa River Walk is a must do and there’s plenty of natural habitats and wildlife to spy as you wander there.

With the mighty Murrumbidgee a stone’s throw from the village centre, take a riverside walk or engage with a Murrumbidgee River canoe or kayak trail. It is recommended to research the Crown Land website as the river has steep sides at places. There’s Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Trout and Murray Crayfish for those with a NSW Recreational Fishing Licence. Check out requirements.

Stay overnight in Boorowa, or travel through hilly country to Wyangala Dam where stunning water views and tree lined plateaus offer the traveller many activities including walking tracks and mountain bike trails. There are also water sports like kayaking, fishing, swimming water skiing.

Intermittent steep terrain offers a vantage point at Waterworks Lookout along Riverside Drive with panoramic views over the Jugiong region.

The Wyangala Waters Holiday Park has options for overnight or longer stays.

Drive to Harden Murrumburrah through picturesque undulating countryside and set out for a stride along the recently redeveloped Murrimboola Creek where nearby the state’s most recent silo art pays homage in splendorous colour to the district’s golden grain and flour mill heritage. Across the road from the silo, travellers can admire a unique roof mural painted on the newly opened Harden Murrumburrah Visitor Information Centre. It’s an attraction in itself, and there’s plenty of information and directions within.

Extend your walk with a stride around the Murrumburrah Trail, an informative and attractive outdoor experience while in the twin town of Harden exercise and history intersect on a walking trail starting at the historic railway station.

NATURE Boorowa – Murringo – Koorawatha – Touts Lookout – Young There are some stunning outdoor activities to enjoy in the Hilltops Region of NSW and here are six encompassing villages of Murringo, Koorawatha, Monteagle and the towns of Boorowa and Young.

Bird Watching

Members of Boorowa’s iconic Superb Parrot community can be found in wooded areas throughout the region and in nearby Murringo. The Superb Parrot is known for its distinctive size and colouring. It is a large, bright grass-green parrot with a long, narrow tail and sharply back-angled wings in flight. Males have yellow foreheads and throats and a red crescent that separates the throat from the green breast and belly.

Females are slightly duller green with a light blue wash. Happy bird watching!

Koorawatha Reserve

Make your way to the village of Koorawatha the gateway to the Koorawatha Nature Reserve. Enjoy a counter meal at the Koorawatha Hotel, then head off to explore the nature reserve. Depending on weather conditions the falls may be flowing, a spectacular sight. Check road conditions at the pub before leaving as four wheel drives are recommended and you may need to stop and walk some distance into the reserve area. Before you leave find the sign commemorating the battle between Bushranger Ben Hall and his accomplices and police at the site of the old Bang Bang Hotel.

Touts Lookout

Take Scenic Road (gravel) via Touts Lookout to one of the area’s most stunning sites.

Riverside Walk

Take a relaxed stroll along the riverside walking trail. Keep an eye out for the elusive duck-billed platypus. Extend the walk by wandering the main street, gathering locally produced goodies to enjoy throughout the day from a wide range of cafés and retail outlets.

Picnic at Murringo

Next, enjoy a leisurely drive along the scenic Murringo’s Gap Road towards Koorawatha, stopping for morning tea at the picturesque picnic area located alongside Murringo Creek or in picnic areas near the Murringo Hall. Come weekends the Taubman and Webb Trading Post may be ready to welcome with memorabilia of the Australian stockman and other bush legends, products and books.

The Young Railway Station built in 1885 is an excellent example of Victorian architecture.

The Big Red Cherries pay homage to Italian and Croatian immigrants who began the region’s fruit industry. Whilst the Great Court House is considered one of the finest court buildings in NSW.
