Inscription on the back of the poplar panel No. 39 ~ LIONARDO DA VINCI Purchased in 1978 by Robbert Bolleurs of ’s-Gravenhage, NL (The Hague). From the Aldobrandini Collection (1598-c.1786); William Beckford (to 1807); left by Baroness Louisa Ashburton (from the Baring Collection) to her grandson Spencer Douglas Compton in 1903.
The Holy Children Embracing Marco d’Oggiono (originally ascribed to Leonardo da Vinci) Whereabouts unknown. Owned by Henry Doetsch until 1895 – sold to Ludwig Mond in 1885 (for 150 guineas) and recorded in the Mond Collection at the death of Mond in 1909/10 (by Jean Paul Richter). Not part of the Mond Bequest to the National Gallery in the 1920s – therefore in the hands of one of Mond’s sons: Alfred (Baron Melchett) or Robert. From 1919 to ????
