College Road Trip by Sam Keeney “This campus looks like Hogwarts! They have the program I want! And I really like this college.” These were just some of the statements heard amongst exclamations of “What kind of mascot is that?” on this year’s College Road Trip. Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee (GSMIDTN)’s College Road Trip is a culmination of a year long Girl U program that includes ACT Practice Tests, newsletters informing older girls about College Recruitment events and more. College Road Trip is a great way to get a taste of what four-year college life might be like. Girls said goodbye to parents on a bright, sunny Sunday afternoon and loaded up a charter bus to tour various colleges in and around Tennessee. This year, girls learned more about the Tennessee Promise, Super Scores and stacking (or not being able to stack) scholarships, in addition to the realization that not all residence halls are created equal.

Girls on the Girl U College Road Trip pose in front of Western Kentucky University’s mascot, Big Red! The College Road Trip is open to Girl Scouts and their friends who are rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade high school students. The trip also runs on a three year rotation, so girls who participate all three years can see a variety of schools with little to no repeats. This year, the trip’s focus was on a tour of the University of Tennessee at Martin. Next year’s trip will be centered on touring University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Touring the different University of Tennessee schools each year gives girls a unique perspective of the differences offered under the University of Tennessee umbrella. Evenings are filled with various activities like an ice cream social, Alka-Seltzer-rockets and the opportunity to ask counselors who are current college students or recent graduates questions about their college experience. Join us next year! Don’t miss out on a wonderful opportunity to learn about college life while making new friends and memories.

GIRL SCOUTS love SPORTS by GiGi Rose Girl Scouts across Middle Tennessee showed their support of great causes and their love of sports at two incredible events this summer. The 27th Annual City of Hope Celebrity Softball game to benefit cancer research was held on June 10 at First Tennessee Park. Almost 600 Girl Scouts contributed to the record-breaking attendance and got to enjoy Reba McEntire sing the national anthem as well as watch the softball skills of Billy Ray Cyrus, Craig Morgan and Kellie Pickler. More than 1,300 Girl Scouts filled the stands at Nissan Stadium on July 8 to watch professional soccer at Nissan Stadium. Our girls cheered on the U.S. team vs. Panama and later saw the game between Martinique vs. Nicaragua. Girl Scouts proved that Nashville is ready for our own professional soccer team!

Celebrating

0 s r e 0 Y a 1 Girl Scouts of

in Middle Tennessee

Girl Scouting comes to Nashville! Five years after the start of the national movement, the first troops in Middle Tennessee were organized.

1973

1965

Horses arrived at Camp Sycamore Hills! Today, this camp is home to our equestrian program and herd of more than 40 horses and ponies.

A successful capital campaign provided the finances to build a council office at 830 Kirkwood Lane in Nashville. It would be our home for the next 25 years!

1985 Dr. Rhea Seddon, a former Murfreesboro Girl Scout, became the second American woman to go into space. She took a Cumberland Valley patch with her and later presented it to the council.

12

1917

1991 After a $4.5 million capital campaign (the largest for any Girl Scout council at that time), we moved into our new home at 4522 Granny White Pike in Nashville.

1927 The Nashville Girl Scout Council received its charter. Within a year, more than 400 girls were registered and the first Brownie Pack was organized.

1935 Nashville Girl Scouts sold doughnuts as a source of financing! They kept the Holsum Bakery working overtime (day and night, three shifts) to catch up with their sales!

1958

1944

Twenty counties in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky joined forces to become Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Council. More than 8,000 girls registered that first year.

Josephine Groves Holloway was hired by the Nashville Council as the first African American professional staff member. She served until 1963, and our Camp Holloway honors her legacy.

2007 Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Council became Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee in order to better represent our service area.

2017

100th Anniversary Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee celebrates 100 years of scouting! Today, our Council serves more than 14,500 girls and 6,500 adults across 39 counties of Middle Tennessee.

GET TO KNOW

Camp Holloway

Camp Holloway, established by Josephine Groves Holloway in 1952, is located on 76 acres in Millersville, Tennessee. At one time, Camp Holloway was just a simple plot of Holloway family land that gave AfricanAmerican children a rare opportunity to camp. Today, girls of all races, religions and backgrounds gather at this historic camp to discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together. At Camp Holloway, girls can take part in a variety of outdoor adventures and take advantage of first-rate accommodations. Girls can experience archery, an obstacle course, a rappelling and rock climbing tower, swimming, team adventure and tree climbing. It’s also home to one of the two summer resident camps. Camp Holloway also has activities that are unlike any other camp: Swing By Choice and Guerney’s Cabin Scavenger Hunt. Swing by Choice is a giant pendulum swing that requires groups of girls to pull each other to the top of the swing. It is truly a chooseyour-challenge activity! Girls all participate in

every step of the process, and when it’s their turn, they can choose exactly how high to go. The Guerney’s Cabin Scavenger Hunt is part of the Guerney’s Cabin patch that troops can earn when they come to Camp Holloway. It’s a great way to learn about the history of Camp Holloway and explore different areas of camp that Girl Scouts might not normally visit. A few of the coolest things at Camp Holloway are the original house Mrs. Holloway shared with her family and the cabin her husband slept in when Mrs. Holloway’s girls came to camp. These were originally part of the Holloway’s vacation home and were donated to Girl Scouts of the Cumberland Valley (now Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee) to use as a camp for all girls. To learn more about Camp Holloway, visit gsmidtn.org/Holloway or contact Lauren Reichstein at LReichstein@gsmidtn.org.

Agenia Clark Gold Award Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership Did you know that Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee has a scholarship available for Gold Award recipients? Two years ago the Sue Peters Foundation for Girls of Courage, Confidence and Character created a scholarship for girls who have demonstrated outstanding leadership by earning the highest award available to girls – the Girl Scout Gold Award. This is a $2,500 scholarship for girls entering college for the first time that can be used at any accredited post-secondary college or university in the United States. Girl Scouts who have earned the Gold Award can apply for this scholarship during their senior year in high school. Recipients are awarded annually at the Salute to Outstanding Leadership Awards ceremony hosted each year in late April or early May. Details for applying for the Agenia Clark Gold Award Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership will be sent to all girls in grade twelve in the fall. For more information, contact Poppy Lee at PLee@gsmidtn.org or (615) 460-0252.

Dear Girl Scout Friends and Family, We want to share that our Board Chair of four years, Helena Yarbrough, has stepped down from her position to relocate out of the Nashville area. She will be succeeded by Kathy Hansen, a longtime volunteer for Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee. Helena first came onto the Board as a Member at Large in 2008, and in 2014, assumed the position of Board Chair. Under Helena’s leadership in the Board, Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee has undergone tremendous growth. Helena crafted a strategy for and implemented the “Good to Great” board, a Board Governance Committee; was instrumental in securing corporate funding leadership from Bridgestone Corporation; and successfully settled with GSUSA to have independent management of the Pension Plan, effective January 1, 2016. We are tremendously grateful to Helena for her commitment to Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee. Thanks to her stewardship, we have been able to grow and prosper.

Please join us in bidding Helena a very fond farewell, and welcoming Kathy as our new Board Chair!

The Girl Scout Difference: Girl Scouts offers the best leadership development experience for girls in the world—one that is designed with, by and for girls. The single-gender environment offered by Girl Scouts creates an inclusive space in which girls are free to explore their potential and take the lead without the distractions that can be found in a coed environment. Girls are able to stretch beyond their limits and transfer valuable knowledge and skills to any environment, both now and in the future.

An all-girls environment builds confidence. –Dr. Linda Henman, author of The Decision Catalyst

13.5% of GIRL SCOUTS would choose a career in STEM, compared to 10.7% of girls not in Girl Scouts.

93%

of GIRLS graduating from all-girls schools say they were offered greater leadership opportunities than peers at coed schools.

GIRLS in single-gender schools achieve higher test scores in math and science, and accomplish more in later life.
