my family tradition

my family tradtion By Shelby Hughes (lifetime member)

“To me, the words ‘Girl Scouts’ and ‘Family’ are interchangeable. My family has been with me every step of the way, and the people I met in Girl Scouts have in turn become like family.”

I

vividly remember going with my mom to sign up to become a Daisy 17 years ago. Since then, Girl Scouting has been a major part of my life. It is amazing to think about how much I have learned and grown as a person because of my journey in Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts has impacted my family and me in more ways than I ever imagined possible. In a sense, Girl Scouting is a part of our family history. We are three generations of Girl

Scouts. My grandma, Betty “Nonnie” Coleman, was a Girl Scout growing up, as was my mom, Mitzi Hughes. I believe their positive experiences in scouting had a major hand in me joining. My mom was my troop leader for years, and Nonnie was her co-leader and right-hand woman. My mom took care of the planning for badge work, the administrative tasks and coordinating with parents, and Nonnie – our designated troop grandma – always occupied us with art projects, music, and as we got older, orienteering adventures and outdoor skills. They were a great team, and I’m glad my little sister, Hannah Hughes, has them around to oversee and influence her troop as well. Scouting is a common link we all have, and it really has brought us closer together. I have no doubt that these strong women’s encouragement and input as I worked on my Gold Award contributed to its success.

4 on my honor

Through experiences in community service, camping and other fun outings and learning experiences, I have made lifelong friends, fostered a love for nature and discovered a great deal about myself in the process. And the icing on the cake: it has been a family affair all the while. Scouting has empowered me to strive high in all that I do, be a leader and to see the world in a different light. There is a lot of potential for good out there, and Girl Scouts equips girls with the tools to bring communities together and leave a lasting and positive impact on society. To me, the words “Girl Scouts” and “Family” are interchangeable. My family has been with me every step of the way, and the people I met in Girl Scouts have in turn become like family. I look forward to many wonderful adventures with my Girl Scout family in the future, and I hope girls in our family continue to learn and grow in Girl Scouting for many generations to come.

How to Buy Cookies

You probably know how tasty Girl Scout cookies are, but if you’re like a lot of people I know, you may not realize how important the experience of selling them is to me and my team of Girl Scouts. Selling cookies helps us learn a bunch of stuff that we’ll need to become successful leaders, things like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics— skills we need in everyday life. But that experience won’t happen without you. This year, we decided to make a guide on how you should buy cookies. It’s more than just you handing us money for a box—or four— of cookies. It’s about helping us learn how to reach our full potential. Thanks in advance.

Say hi.

Ask where the money goes.

“Hello” and a smile gets everything off on the right foot! It builds our confidence and is basically the greatest conversation starter ever.

Our team decides where our money goes. It’s amazing to see all the great things we can do with what we earn. Some groups use the proceeds to go on new adventures, to new places, or to support causes they care about. So definitely ask us.

Look me in the eye. Some of us may seem a little shy, but that’s just because we don’t know you yet. It’s not easy talking to people you don’t know or asking people to trust you—but that’s what we’re learning to do. Making eye contact says “hey, we see each other, we respect each other—and we’re ready to do business.”

Let me know if you’re a Girl Scout. There are a lot of Girl Scouts out there, everywhere. Over 2 million of us. So definitely tell us if you’re a Girl Scout, and tell us how being a Girl Scout has helped you become who you are. It means a lot to us, seeing what we can become.

Please don’t call us cute. We know we’re cute, but selling cookies is real. We’re learning how to run a business. We want you to buy cookies because you want them and respect what we’re learning, not because of our nice haircut or uniform. We’re running the largest girl-led business in the world. That’s not cute. That’s incredible.

Ask about our inventory. You probably have a favorite (I sure do), but we have a lot of cookies to tell you about. It’s part of my responsibility to explain what we have and then make sure you get exactly what you ordered.

Let’s talk money. When you hand us money, it’s about more than making change. We learn how to set up a budget and track money, and how money can do a lot of good in the world.

Ask us why we’re Girl Scouts. Everyone joins for a different reason, but we all make great friends and accomplish things we wouldn’t otherwise. Our leadership awards and skill-building badges prove it. We learn that we can do anything. We can be anything.

Notice our new package design. We redesigned all the boxes to share the real story of what Girl Scouts do today—and the fun we have while doing it. Tell us what you think.

Let us know how we did. Selling cookies is hard work, and it’s a new thing for a lot of us. Feedback helps us get better and grow into leaders.

Thanks. A lot!

Cookie season is here. Find your cookies at girlscoutcookies.org winter 2013 11

girl helps save grandmother from drowning “I was taught how to swim parallel to the waves in Girl Scouts,” said Maddie, “I also learned about rip currents, buddy swimming and how to tread water.”

E

very summer Maddie Dyer, a junior from troop 1582, and her family visit Navarre Beach in Florida. They enjoy spending time together and swimming in the ocean, but this vacation was not like the others. On July 28, Maddie, her brother, Jack Dyer, and grandmother, Betty McClanahan, were enjoying swimming out to the sandbar and jumping over waves – something they’ve done countless times. Suddenly, a suspected rip current caused them to lose their footing and they realized they were pretty far from the shore. Maddie and Jack noticed that their 12 on my honor

grandmother was exhausted and needed help to get back to land. The siblings jumped into action: they called for help, but no one could hear them. “I decided to go [to shore to] get help since my brother is a Boy Scout and is stronger than me,” said Maddie. When she arrived at the shore there weren’t any lifeguards, so she ran across the beach while yelling help and her aunt was able to call 911. Meanwhile, Jack stayed back with his grandmother and helped her swim to shore. She was transported to the hospital and given oxygen and fluids. Both Maddie and Jack attribute

the skills they used to help their grandmother to scouting. “I was taught how to swim parallel to the waves in Girl Scouts,” said Maddie, “I also learned about rip currents, buddy swimming and how to tread water.” Both siblings remained calm, level headed and didn’t panic because they had learned what to do if they were ever faced with an emergency. Additionally, Jack had recently learned about water safety at the Boxwell Scout Reservation. The family has been back in the ocean since this incident and has noted that it won’t keep them out of the water.

girl scouts support

Thank you Curb Records for supporting Summer Song! Campers had the opportunity to work with a professional songwriter and musician to write, record and perform musical creations of their own.

Correction notice:

Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee would like to extend a congratulations, once again, to Kristen Wieber for receiving her Gold Award in the spring of 2013. In our fall issue of On My Honor we mistakenly switched Kristen's photo with a photo of her sister Natalie, a Silver Award recipient. We understand that a lot of time and dedication goes into achieving such a prestigious award and we would like to to correctly recognize Natalie for this wonderful achievement. 18 on my honor

Thanks to the generosity of Curb Records, this summer, Camp Holloway held its 10th annual Summer Song summer camp program inviting girls from the local community to come to camp to work with a professional songwriter and musician to write, record and perform musical creations of their own. The girls spent five days working on lyrics, harmonies and stage performance to prepare for their end of the week performance. (The songs were about the fun they had at camp and life as a cowgirl in camp's most popular song, “Boots and Braids”.) Each girl received a cd with their songs at the end of the summer.

The stage was set for what was sure to be an enjoyable luncheon at the new Music City Center. During the luncheon, attendees were able to indulged in the delicious food provided by Chef Max Knoephel and his team. As their stomachs got full, one couldn’t help but wish they had slipped on a pair of SPANX to help hold in the delicious food. Laurie Ann Goldman, CEO of SPANX and featured speaker, also spent time with Girl Scouts before the event, snapping pictures and getting to know the girls one-onone. Dressed from head to toe in the latest fashions and engaging in various topics with guests throughout the lunch, there could not have been a better role model to represent women in a world where males hold most CEO positions. As Laurie Ann gave her presentation, she intrigued the audience with her powerful and inspiring words; everything from her time at Coca-Cola, to how she 20 on my honor

happened upon her current position. As if her words and her story were not enough, Laurie Ann surprised attendee with a fifty-dollar gift card for SPANX products. Everyone who wished they had on SPANX at the beginning of the event now had the opportunity to run out and buy a pair after the luncheon. As the event came to a close guests were given their gift cards and a box of cookies handed out by Girl Scout Troop 2885. The Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee would like to send a special thank to the co-chairs, Ellen Jacobs and Sharon Roberson and to all the attendees for their donations. Thank you Laurie Ann Goldman for making this luncheon a memorable one. We can’t wait to see what is in store for next year!

trainings are designed to enhance your experience as a leader Leaders have several training options that are designed to make being a leader a great experience. There are grade level trainings and training for troop travel and camping. The grade level trainings titled JAM Sessions will include information on working with the Journey’s, earning Girl Scout Award and managing all aspects of a troop. There are a session designed especially for the troop that has girls in multiple grade levels. The Journeys portion of the workshop gives you: tips on making the Journey experience less like school, and more fun, ideas of what Girl Led looks like and discuss considerations for take action projects. In the Awards portion you will: get an overview of badges in the Girls Guide to Girl Scouting and how to connect them to Journeys and troop/group activities, discuss patches and other awards available and talk about ceremonies and when to give girls their awards. The Management portion will include: tips on managing troop funds, an overview of characteristics of girls in you grade level in order to better manage behavior and suggestions for working with parents. There are several locations listed on the calendar and we are working to schedule additional trainings. Be on the look out for a JAM Session near you. The all-in-one training for camping and troop travel is Outdoor Skills. This training prepares leaders for troop travel with their girls from hotels to cabins to tents. Girl prep is the most important part of this training. Girl preparation and planning are skills that are useful in all travel situations. The online components Camp Prep, Camp Information and Procedures and Camp Ready are filled with information that is key regardless of the type of trip your troop may choose. The hands on skills portion completes the training with information that will make camping with the troop a great experience. The calendar in E Council lists the dates and locations for adult training opportunities. Registration for the training of your choice is through E Council. If you have questions or need further information about these trainings and how it relates to your troop activity plans contact Shelia Majors at smajors@gsmidtn.org or (615) 460-0252.
