Your Girl Scout Year 2015 Program Guide

1

Your Girl Scout year starts today! Within these pages you will find many adventures

that will spark your imagination, get your feet moving and inspire you to reach new heights. There are a wide variety of programs planned for individuals and troops. Take a moment to explore these great opportunities, then grab your troop and let your planning begin. Together we’ll work on “It’s Your Story - Tell It” journey series. A special event in November will be held to help girls get started on the Journey requirements and begin to put together a plan for finishing up their Journey. As we begin the new Girl Scout year we want to share our three main focus areas; Civic Engagement, Healthy Living and S.T.E.A.M.

Civic Engagement: GS Citizen is a civic engagement program providing Girl

Scouts with the opportunity to enhance leadership understanding by applying knowledge and skills through service opportunities that benefit the community.

Healthy Living: Go, Girl, Go!

Healthy Living is a comprehensive term that includes physical, mental, financial well-being, cultural exposure and environmental awareness. Put your walking shoes on and step into a healthier you with the GSMIDTN Programs Team.

S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math): STEAM is all around us. While we have specific programming through Girl Innovators and initiatives (pg. 39), many of our other programs also engage girls in STEAM concepts.

We are excited to meet you at camp, the zoo, on the ball field, just around the corner or across Middle Tennessee. We hope that your Girl Scout year is exciting, fun and totally you. Let’s Make it a Great Year – Your Program Team

Get Registered! Come join Girl Scouts from other parts of Middle Tennessee and participate in programs designed and carried out by Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee team. These are scheduled on a particular date and for specific grade levels. Registration is taken through E Council and can be found on our online calendar. Registration for each program closes 21 days (3 weeks) prior to an event. Please note popular programs fill prior to the 3 week registration deadline. Unless otherwise stated Council Sponsored Programs require adults to also attend.

STEP 1: Decide on a program that sparks your interest!

STEP 2: Register for the program. 1. Visit the E Council registration page, found in the top right corner of our home page: (www.gsmidtn.org). 2. Select ‘Program Event’ to view the calendar, then select month and year of the event and press ‘go.’

3. Events will appear on the calendar in different colors. View the key at the top left for color explanation. 4. After you have clicked on your event, you will choose ‘troop’ or ‘individual.’ If you are registering several girls from a troop, choose troop. If you are registering a girl as an individual participant, choose individual. 5. The next screen asks for specific information about those who will be attending, including both girl(s) and adult(s). Please note: If you click submit and are notified that you have left out information. DO NOT click the back button to go back, but hold down the alt key and select the left arrow key to return to the previous page. When registration is complete, you’ll receive a confirmation. This does not place you in the program. This only verifies receipt of registration. Be sure to print or save your registration confirmation. E Council does not confirm that you have been placed in the program. Once placement is confirmed, you will receive a billing statement and/or additional correspondence from our office.

STEP 3: PAYMENT Once you have registered and the program is scheduled (and met its minimum), E Council will send you an invoice by email or mail from our council registrars. You will have 10 days from the date you receive your invoice to pay your balance. All balances are due prior to the date of the program. We do not accept partial payments for programs. For your troop to be considered paid in full, you must submit the full payment.

5

CANCELLATION Events run rain or shine. The program managers for each program will contact you if a program is postponed, rescheduled or canceled due to inclement weather. Please use your best judgment when traveling with girls. Traveling in extreme weather is not advised. You are billed and sent reminders for program fees. Payment is expected unless you cancel. Unpaid registrations do not count as notice of cancellation and full payment is expected. All cancellation must be in writing (mail or email) 15 business days before an event. If GSMIDTN cancels the event for any reason, a refund will be issued based on program expenses. REFUND

STEP 4: BEFORE YOUR PROGRAM

We have made plans and prepared for you and your girls to attend our programs and full payment is expected upon registration. Troops or individual Girl Scouts may cancel a reservation and request a refund in writing within 15 business days (3 weeks) of an event.

Letters or emails will be sent to you at least one week prior to the event with all the information you will need. If your troop’s registration was received after the event was filled, you will be put on a waiting list and will receive notification if space becomes available.

Refunds are not issued for individuals or troops who choose not to attend a program. Full payment is required unless written cancellation is received 15 business days prior to an event.

MAIL YOUR PAYMENTS TO: Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee Attn: Program Registrars 4522 Granny White Pike Nashville, TN 37204

Refunds for unexpected sickness or family emergencies will be considered upon request.

Please set ecouncil@gsmidtn.org as a “safe sender,” to avoid accidental delivery to junk or spam folders.

A program that has specified “no refunds” will not grant refund requests for any reason. Refund requests can be sent via mail or email.

COMMUNICATION ABOUT PROGRAMS For clarification concerning any program please reach out to the staff contact listed under each description. Please avoid responding to ecouncil@gsmidtn.org.

Refund request may be sent to programdept@gsmidtn.org

Isn’t it nice to know that you don’t have to travel far to experience the great outdoors? Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee has four wonderful properties for your camping enjoyment. We have something for everyone, and these properties are offered year round. We know memories are important, let’s make some together. Visit our website to see all the properties and complete list of what they offer. For further questions, contact Shaniqua Berry: sberry@ gsmidtn.org or (615) 460-0204.

CAMP HOLLOWAY

CAMP PIEDMONT

At Camp Holloway, girls can take part in a variety of outdoor adventures and take advantage of first-rate accommodations. Girls can experience archery, obstacle course, rappelling tower, rock climbing, swimming, team adventure and tree climbing. It’s also home to one of the two summer resident camps. Come discover the rich history Camp Holloway has to offer.

Throughout the acres of wooded trails, campers are always just minutes away from base camp. The newly remodeled lodge boasts an activity room that is large enough to accommodate an entire troop. Campers can also use the 18-hole disc golf course as part of their activities.

CAMP NEE KAH NAH

CAMP SYCMORE HILLS

With its name coming from the Cherokee word for “friendship crossing,” Camp Nee Kah Nah is a great place for girls to form friendships and experience the wonder and fun of outdoor camping. Camp Nee Kah Nah is located along the beautiful rolling hills west of Gainesboro, Tennessee, and covers 354 acres. Cherokee artifacts from centuries ago have been found at the camp, which is registered with the state of Tennessee as an archaeological site.

Camp Sycamore Hills is our largest resident camp and is often used for troop and service unit camping. It offers many opportunities to experience the great outdoors including: archery, bluff rappelling, canoeing, cook outs, funoeing, high challenge, horses, swimming, obstacle course, team adventure, tree climbing and wagon rides.

Honor and Memorial Gifts Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee’s Annual Fund provides important support that makes Girl Scouting accessible to every girl in our 39 counties. By making a gift to the Annual Fund, you also help ensure that we can continue to offer excellent educational programs designed for adult volunteers and girls, and further extend our outreach and services to the community.

All Girl Scout supporters who include Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee in their estate plans become members of the Juliette Gordon Low Society, an exclusive group of individuals who have made the same commitment to Girl Scouts. Every year, the group gets together to network with one another, catch up and hear about the impact Girl Scouts is making in the lives of girls.

Upon receipt of your fully tax deductible gift, we will notify your special person, or that person’s family, by sending a card acknowledging the dedication. The gift amount will remain confidential.

As the premier leadership organization for girls, Girl Scouts is committed to ensuring that all girls reach their full potential. One woman paved the way for us to shape the destiny of our girls in Middle Tennessee, former Executive Director Sue Peters. In 2014, we said goodbye to Sue. A long-time champion of Girl Scouts, she shaped so much of today’s Girl Scout experience in our community. As a result of her 22 years leading Girl Scouts here in Middle Tennessee, Sue leaves an outstanding legacy that will continue to be felt for generations to come.
