Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland Troop 61018 with Pitsco owner Harvey Dean.

Girl Scout Success Story A Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland troop from Pittsburg, Kansas has been working for over a year to collect plastic tops to recycle into park benches! That’s right, recycling plastic tops into park benches. While doing research to help her troop choose a Bronze Award Project, the troop leader ran across an organization called Green Tree Plastics that converts used plastic into products such as picnic benches, trash receptacles, and benches. In August 2014, the girls began saving lids — the plastic kind that come on bottled drinks, tubs of butter, and tubs of ice cream that otherwise would end up in the trash. They also began raising money through the cookie program to put toward the additional $200 cost per bench. By early 2015, the girls knew they had enough for

one bench (400 pounds of lids). But they didn’t stop. They kept working, and by August they had enough lids for three benches (1,200 pounds)! They spent hot August days washing all the lids, and, in late October, they headed to the Green Tree Plastics headquarters in Evansville, Indiana with their collection loaded up on a borrowed trailer. The troop has been recognized by Pitsco, a company that provides product, activities, and curriculum for educators in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and its owner, Harvey Dean. This month, the girls went before their City Commission to report on the project. Commission members were suitably impressed — so much so that they offered up the use of an empty hangar at the local airport if the girls agreed to keep saving lids and cashing them in for more benches.

Building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland Holds 21st Annual Girl Scout Golf Invitational Nineteen golf teams came out to Meadow Lake Acres Country Club on August 10, 2015 to play a round of golf at one of mid-Missouri’s premier golf courses and raise funds to support the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Scheppers Distributing, Inc., Orscheln Industries, Primaris, SMART, and Williams-Keepers, LLC. Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards: 100th Anniversary Celebration Fundraiser 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the highest award in Girl Scouting. This award has been called by many different names through the years: Golden Eagle of Merit, Golden Eagle, Curved Bar, First Class, and the Girl Scout Gold Award. No matter the name of the award, the significance and prestige of earning it remains the same. By the time a recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award puts the final touches on her seven-step project, she will have solved a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future—and she will be eligible for exclusive college scholarships, higher military rank, and a lifetime of additional benefits. To celebrate 100 years of young women earning Girl Scouting’s Highest Award, Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland will hold a fundraising event, Girl Scouts’ Highest Award 100th Celebration Fundraiser. Featuring Girl Scouts of the USA’s CEO, Anna Maria Chavez, this event will allow Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland to educate it’s communities about the award, and to raise muchneeded monetary support to ensure that each and every girl has the opportunity to join the Girl Scout Movement and earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. Girl Scouts’ Highest Award 100th Celebration Fundraiser will be held on June 3, 2016 in Springfield at The Old Glass Place. Sponsorships and individual tickets are available. For more information, please contact Chief Development Officer Angie Robinson Sullivan at 877-312-4764 x1343 or asullivan@girlscoutsmoheartland.org. Thank you to our current sponsors: ABC Interbake, Arvest Bank, The Bank of Missouri, Citizens Memorial Healthcare, Mary Daly, DermaHealth, Jane Earnhart, 417 Magazine, Lindsey Godfrey, Lathrop & Gage, Mercy Health, Metropolitan National Bank, Marla Moody, Ollis Akers Arney, Positronic, RMMC, Mark & Tina Stillwell, and Cindy Waites.
