VOLUNTEER411

fall/winter 2015

Our council serves just over 15,000 girls and 5,000 adults across 68 counties in southern and central Missouri, southeast Kansas, and northeast Oklahoma.

VOLUNTEER411 is a publication of the Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland and is published twice yearly.

The Girl Scout Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 2

The Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is the premier leadership development experience for girls in southern and central Missouri, southeast Kansas, and northeast Oklahoma, helping them to discover their own sense of self, connect with others in an increasingly diverse world, and take action to make the world a better place.

We invite you to discover wow-worthy experiences. This year, before you get started helping girls discover a world of new (and maybe even learning some fun new things yourself), we encourage you to explore the next few pages. Then, show your girls that a little imagination can go a long way, while they work to understand themselves and their values, and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world. In Girl Scouts, developing into a purposeful leader is as much about the journey, and what you discover along the way, as the destination. 13

GSMH appreciates you! None of our outdoor programs

would be possible without our program facilitators. We utilize wranglers, challenge course facilitators, lifeguards, and archery facilitators. And guess what! As a council program facilitator, we pay for your training. If you are interested in becoming a program facilitator please contact the leadership and learning specialist – outdoor program.

Thinking about troop camping?

Before partaking in an overnight camping experience, girls should feel comfortable staying away from home. The adults helping girls to plan their camping trip must have outdoor training provided by the council and be a registered member of GSMH. There must also be an adult who has first aid training. For more information, call our LLSOutdoor Program or email camp@ girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

“Nature provides novelty and challenge, which enhance leadership. Outdoor experiences often place girls in new physical, psychological, and social situations that motivate curiosity and foster a sense of discovery. Authentic challenges in nature (think . . . starting a fire in the rain or negotiating a set of whitewater rapids) require girls to become more self-aware and to cooperate, communicate, and solve problems more effectively.” – More Than S’mores: Successes and Surprises in Girl Scouts’ Outdoor Experiences. TAKE ACTION

Destinations Girl Scout Seniors at the time, Molly and Kristan from Ozark, MO went in 2013 to Equine Gymnastics in Atlanta, Georgia, hosted by Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.

“Going on this Destination was an incredible experience. I got to try stunts on the horses that I had been interested in learning and never got to try before. Kristan and I flew to Atlanta by ourselves which really boosted my confidence. I also appreciated that while the council gave me scholarship money, I had to earn the rest of the money on my own by selling Girl Scout Cookies and other fundraisers – my parents didn’t just pay for me to go. It felt good to earn my own way.” – Molly (pictured)

40

Put horseback riding and gymnastics together and you get Equine Gymnastics! Girls spent the week learning a variety of stunts to perform on horseback. At the end of the Destination the girls showed off what they learned to friends and family members.

We believe that every girl deserves a chance to see the world. That’s why we developed the travel pathway—to give girls opportunities to learn about new cultures and meet new people. Girls have travel opportunities through Girl Scout Destinations and our own council travel plan. Troops can also travel together through Girl Scout Getaways! Girl Scout Destinations are travel

opportunities hosted by other Girl Scout councils, that range from two days to three weeks for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Through Destinations, a girl can visit the Grand Canyon; learn about sea turtles firsthand in Costa Rica; go Hollywood Dreamin’ to produce, direct, and film her own movie; and much more!

Girl Scout Getaways are travel opportunities hosted by other Girl Scout councils, designed for a troop to attend together. Getaways range in length from one day to a week. Experiences offered include canoeing the Boundary Waters, going to Space Camp, or exploring cities from Seattle to Boston! Our council also offers at least one council-sponsored trip each year to help our girls broaden their horizons. The trips are led by chaperones and include a nurse. Check out the box to the right to find out where we’re going next! Fine Print

Girls must apply for and be accepted to each Girl Scout Destination by GSMH and the trip host. The deadline to submit applications to GSMH is November 15 of each year. Girls can use Cookie Credit or Fall FUNds as payment, and financial assistance is available. To register for a Girl Scout Getaway, you should contact the host council or organization directly. You do not need approval from GSMH to register for a Getaway, but you will need to fill out a Troop Travel Application and be approved for travel. Cookie Credit, Fall FUNds, and Troop Bucks may be used for Getaways.

Council Travel Plan Savannah Bound • • • June 25-July 1, 2016 Come explore the birthplace of Girl Scouting! This trip will include visits to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, the Andrew Low House, and the First Girl Scout Headquarters. We will also explore Savannah and spend a day at Tybee Island. Includes transportation by charter bus, hotel room with four girls or two adults in a room, breakfast and dinner, attractions, patches, and a trip t-shirt. To Register: Complete an Event Registration Form and submit a $100 deposit by January 15, 2016. Complete balance is due by May 25, 2016. Girls may use Cookie Credit or Fall FUNds and may apply for financial assistance.

TAKE ACTION

A roadmap for your

Journeys teach today’s Girl Scouts what it takes to be a leader. As girls complete Journeys throughout their Girl Scout experience, they will learn the three keys to leadership: Discover, Connect, and Take Action. At each age level, girls have three Journey paths, where they can earn one, two, or three awards on each path! Girls who complete all of the Journey awards available at her age level earn the Journey Summit Pin, demonstrating that they know what it means to be a leader.

Journey Paths

What does it take to make a Journey successful? You can make the Journey experience a great one for your girls! Be sure to utilize the adult guide to find strategies to make your troop’s experience the best it can be. Incorporate badge activities, field trips, community service projects, and council events to enhance the Journey experience. Talk to other leaders and rely on the support of the LLS-GSLE in your region to help you get the most out of the Journey experience!

42

For more information, contact your local LLS-GSLE!

It’s Your World – Change It! empowers girls to make lasting change in their community by inspiring Take Action projects. It’s Your Planet – Love It! teaches girls about the environment and how their conservation actions can make a difference. It’s Your Story – Tell It! gives girls the opportunity to tell their own story through creative approaches.

“I feel great working with the girls on their Journeys! This year we completed two! We are shooting for the Summit Award!” – Theresa, Troop Leader

frequently asked questions Which Journey should I choose? Choose your Journey based on the interests of the girls in your troop. We now have Journey Sampler Kits available for check out at each service center. Check out this resource for a chance to review each of the books and even complete a sample activity or two! They are available for Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette levels.

Where do I start? Once you have chosen a Journey, take some time to look through your adult guide and get ideas on how to start. If you are stuck, talk to your local LLS-GSLE or other leaders who have completed the Journey, look for training opportunities at Learn2Lead, or request a training for your service unit.

How long does it take to complete a Journey? There is not a definitive answer to this question. Depending on the awards you choose to earn, field trips, and other supplemental activities, Girl Scout Journeys can be completed over the course of a full year, within a couple of months, or even over a few weekends. It is up to you and your troop how long you want to spend on a Journey.

My girls say the Journey feels like school. How can I make it more exciting? It is not required that you read the girl book cover to cover with your girls. To make it more exciting, try utilizing the adult guide to find activities that will be fun for your troop, adapting activities to be more hands-on, or getting ideas from your girls about what they think would be more fun! The more input they have, the more invested they will become.

How do we know what has to be done to earn the awards? Each Journey gives direction for each award within it on what activities need to be completed to earn a particular award. Encourage the girls to look in their girl book for the award guidelines (often found in the front or back of the book) and reference the awards section of the adult guide for specifics.

Do I have to do all of the activities in the girl book? You do not have to complete every activity. Utilize your adult guide to choose the activities you think will be most meaningful to your girls. You are free to adapt the Journey to meet the needs and interests of your troop. Girls can also add to their experience by doing additional activities from the Girl Scout Journey on their own.

ESSENTIALS

TROOP

Donations

Troop Finances

Girl Scouts may not raise funds on behalf of other organizations, though they may choose to contribute troop funds to service projects and initiatives of their choice. Troops may also make donations, either material or monetary, to organizations of their choice. To receive donations, troop leaders should contact our Resource Development department.

Troops and girls should be learning to budget in a responsible and sustainable way. That means each troop should be working to minimize extra costs to themselves and to families. Troop members and families may vote to utilize troop proceeds for volunteers’ membership dues, training fees, program chaperone fees, or books. However, troop funds may never be utilized for volunteers’ personal expenses such as fuel and apparel.

Troop MoneyEarning Projects The Girl Scout program is intended to be selfsufficient. All troops are encouraged to participate in the Fall Product Program and Girl Scout Cookie Program to help provide troop funding. Because Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, Inc. is the holder of a nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, all additional troop moneyearning activities must be pre-approved by our Resource Development department. Complete guidelines and the Troop Money-Earning Activity Application are available on our website.

46

Troop income earned through troop dues collection, product program, and money-earning activities should be utilized to serve all girls and the troop at large. Troop funds are shared by all members of the troop, and cannot be given directly to, earmarked, or designated for specific girls in dollar or percentage amounts. For further guidance on how to budget troop funds, please refer to the Troop Financial Guidelines on our website. It is a good idea to be transparent with families about troop funds and their usage throughout the year. We strongly encourage troop leaders to: • provide receipts for parents whenever money is exchanged. • provide parents with regular financial updates or notification of how and when troop funds are spent. • allow parents to audit the troop checkbook and/or the annual Troop Financial Report. • keep receipts for all purchases. • limit ATM/cash withdrawals for troop expenses, and keep receipts to document cash purchases for the troop.

Troop Financial Reports All troops and service units are required to submit a Troop Financial Report by October 1. This report must be verified and signed by three unrelated adults and submitted by the deadline. Report forms are distributed in spring re-registration packets and are also available on our website.

Financial Assistance Financial assistance application forms are available on our website. A separate application must be submitted for each applicant; troop applications are not accepted. Financial assistance is reserved for those who demonstrate need; it is not a substitute for troop funds or proceeds. Financial assistance is available for the following. • Girls: membership dues; handbooks; uniform pieces; GSMH program events, trips, and camp; Girl Scout Destinations. • Adults: membership dues; Journey handbooks; GSMH program events and trips; volunteer trainings.

Troop Safety Girl Scout adult-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of adults needed to supervise a specific number of girls at each Girl Scout grade level. These ratios ensure the safety of girls and adults at Girl Scout activities. For example, if one adult has to respond to an emergency, a second adult is always on hand for the remaining girls. The adults counted in these safety ratios must be unrelated to each other (i.e., not siblings, spouses, parents, significant others, etc.) and must all be at least 18 years old. At least one adult at all activities must be an approved* female volunteer. Use this handy chart to identify how many adults you need for the number of girls participating in your troop or activity!

Tagalongs Siblings and children not registered for program events and trainings are considered “tagalongs. Tagalongs are not permitted to participate in events and are strongly discouraged from attending, unless an event is specifically deemed family-friendly. Parents are responsible for providing supervision and age-appropriate activities for tagalongs, and ensure that there is no distraction from or interference with the scheduled Girl Scout event. If the parent/guardian does not provide appropriate supervision, or the child causes a distraction or safety issue, the parent and child will be asked to leave the event site. Tagalongs are not permitted at council-sponsored overnight events, travel, or camp. The non-member insurance provided through Mutual of Omaha does not cover tagalongs for events intended for Girl Scout members. Therefore, GSMH is not liable for these individuals.

No refunds will be given after the registration deadline date unless the training/event is cancelled by the council. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

What are they talking about? Turn to the page to find out more! “I came because my girls wanted to camp and I wanted to experience it firsthand. I came back because this is the best place a Girl Scout volunteer can be—I’ve learned so much, and recharged my batteries at the end of a long year. If you’ve never been—you need to get here.” –Amy P. 26

“I feel great working with the girls on their Journeys! This year we completed two! We are shooting for the Summit Award!” –Theresa P. 43

It felt good to earn my own way.” – Molly P. 40
