FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO Dear Girl Scouts: One hundred years ago, Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low recognized the value and importance of Girl Scouts’ achievements by creating a highest award, then known as the Golden Eagle of Merit. Over the years, the award’s name changed but its focus remained constant. Gold Award Girl Scouts improve the lives of those around them by educating, inspiring and taking action to make the world a better place. During our Gold Award Centennial celebrations, we recognize all the women who earned the highest award as a part of our Gold Award family. Today, the Gold Award represents a girl’s legacy in Girl Scouting, the culmination of over 80 hours of work on a project that is important to each girl. The 163 extraordinary young women highlighted in this award yearbook have demonstrated exemplary leadership, exceptional organizational skills and the drive to complete a difficult task. They have made a measurable impact on their communities and the world by completing projects that addressed childhood obesity, promoted careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and bridged the technology gap for senior citizens, just to name a few. Take a look through this book, and you’ll see why I call the Gold Award the Ph.D of Girl Scouting. The path to earning the Gold Award starts at an early age for Girl Scouts, with the encouragement of their leaders and parents. An important step in the progression is earning the Silver Award, which gives Girl Scout Cadettes the opportunity to assemble a team and put a plan into action. This year, 899 Girl Scouts earned their Silver Award, helping make their world a better place. They are well on their way to earning the Gold Award! Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital also has a unique recognition which pays tribute to the many hours of service dedicated by Girl Scouts. The Silver Trefoil was earned by 161 Girl Scouts this year. They devoted over 16,100 hours of service to their community, globally and in the Girl Scout Council, selflessly volunteering their time to good causes. As Girl Scouts who recognize the importance of serving others, you are in excellent company. Every female Secretary of State was a Girl Scout, and our First Lady is the proud Honorary President of Girl Scouts. We are delighted that these inspiring women have applauded the accomplishments of our Gold Award Girl Scouts in letters seen throughout this yearbook. Congratulations again to the entire high awards class, and here’s to 100 more years of extraordinary achievement by extraordinary girls. Sincerely,

Lidia Soto-Harmon Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital

GIRL SCOUT GREATS

MADELEINE ALBRIGHT

April 1, 2016 Dear Gold Award Girl Scouts, I want to congratulate you on earning the Gold Award, the highest level of achievement in Girl Scouts. Being an active member in Girl Scouts is an incredible opportunity to enhance your leadership skills and give back to the community. Your dedication to the organization is commendable. You should be proud, as your achievements also serve as motivation for the younger women of Girl Scouts who want to follow in your footsteps. As a Girl Scout alumna, I know first-hand the values and principles forged by Girl Scouting. I was taught to strive not because there were any guarantees of success, but because the act of striving is in itself the only way to keep faith with life. I encourage you to continue striving for a better world. The skills that you have acquired over the past years are invaluable, and they will aid you in many efforts. You must take all that you have learned and continue to apply it to your everyday life. Thank you for your service, your good citizenship, and your leadership. Your contributions today will ensure a better future for those who will follow you tomorrow. Wishing you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. Sincerely,

Madeleine K. Albright

ABOUT THE GOLD AWARD

The Gold Award is Girl Scouts' highest honor. This prestigious award is earned by a select group of Girl Scouts who have demonstrated a higher commitment to improving their communities, and advocating for lasting change. This past year, from March 16, 2015 to March 15, 2016, 163 Girl Scouts from 25 counties in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia earned the Gold Award. The road to the Gold Award begins with discovery. Each girl uses her own values and skills to identify a community issue she is passionate about and then determines the topic and audience for her project. Before proceeding, each girl submits a project proposal to the Gold Award Panel. The Panel welcomes all projects for which there is a demonstrated need. The Panel works with Girl Scouts to support the development of their projects, and act as mentors along the way. While working on her project, each Girl Scout dedicates herself to advancing her cause and accomplishing her goal. All of the projects completed this year will have a lasting and positive impact on our region and beyond. From protecting the environment and teaching young people about community issues, to promoting healthy behaviors and helping the homeless, these Girl Scouts have exhibited outstanding leadership, exceptional organizational skills, and a sincere commitment to improving their communities. Congratulations to all of our Gold Award Girl Scouts! 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting’s highest award, and the following pages feature this year’s centennial Gold Award Girl Scouts and descriptions of their projects. By necessity, the descriptions are brief and may not fully describe the scope of the project.

GOLD AWARD SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Many colleges and universities offer scholarships to Girl Scouts who have earned their Gold Award, because they recognize the leadership skills required to earn the highest award. This year, our Council offered high school seniors who earned their Gold Award the opportunity to apply for one of ten $2,000 educational scholarships. The Gold Award Scholarship Panel, comprised of members of the business community with a commitment to Girl Scouting, reviewed written applications and identified semifinalists to be interviewed in person at the Council office. Based on the interviews, committee members selected the finalists. Additionally, in honor of the Gold Award Centennial, in 2016, the Council selected a Young Woman of Distinction – who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership – to receive a $3,000 scholarship. The Council’s multiple scholarships for Gold Award recipients are funded through generous gifts from Sarah Phillips, a lifetime Girl Scout volunteer, in support of the Sarah and Lawrence Phillips Scholarships; a gift from an anonymous donor in honor of Marilynn Carr; and Shenandoah Region scholarships supported through an endowment from lifetime Girl Scout volunteers Eva L. Woolridge and Lynne Seibert-Steptoe.
