Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails has not one, but two, incredible summer camps ready to take your summer from “meh” to “a-mah-zing!” From the traditional summer camp experience at Rancho del Chaparral to high adventure getaways at Camp Elliott Barker, Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails has a summer experience for every girl. Camp is a great place to make new friends, experience new challenges, and just be yourself. Camp is an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of our screen-filled lives and enjoy the wonder of being outdoors. To playing games and exploring nature. Camp Standards Rancho del Chaparral and Camp Elliott Barker are proud to be American Camp Association (ACA) accredited. The ACA is a national organization that sets high standards for the health and safety of campers, staff, and the delivery of quality programs. Our camps meet the standards for health, safety, program and personnel criteria set by federal, state and local government, and standards set by Girl Scouts of the USA.

What is Camp All About? The world of camp is unlike any other. Camp is a lot more than songs and games and s’mores. Beyond participating in incredible activities like canoeing, horseback riding, archery, ropes course, hiking, tent camping, and outdoor cooking (just to name a few), when a girl goes to camp ... • • • • •
she will grow in self-confidence and know that her voice counts. she will support others and be supported. she will increase her circle of friends, lead a group, follow others, compromise, and make decisions for herself. with other girls, she will create a community that values differences. she will discover that anything is possible!
Who is camp for?
Girl Scouting Builds: 1. Strong Sense of Self: Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities; they form positive identities. 2. Positive Values: Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others. 3. Challenge Seeking: Girls take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes. 4. Healthy Relationships: Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflicts constructively. 5. Community Problem Solving: Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve them.
Camp is a place for every girl. Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails offers Resident Camp to all girls entering 1st through 12th grade in the Fall of 2018. Troop Camp is open to troops of all Girl Scouting levels. Family Camp is open to all girl and adult Girl Scouts and family members.

A Day at Camp! It’s a busy week at camp! Campers experience a variety of activities depending on the program they’ve selected. All campers enjoy camp engaging activities like cookouts, hiking, arts & crafts, and songs & games. Within each session, girls and their counselors decide what activities they’d like to do that week. Each day’s events differ slightly, but a typical day at camp looks like this: 7:00 a.m. 7:45 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 5:45 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m.

Is My Girl Scout Ready for Camp? If your Girl Scout has never spent the night away from home, you may want to start with Family Camp, Troop Camp, Me & My Guy, or Me & My Gal to get her familiar with camp. Although age is one factor in readiness for resident camp, a girl’s maturity level and personality are more importation indicators. Talk to your girl. If she is enthusiastic about attending, she will probably enjoy camp. Answer these questions to help assess her readiness: • Has your Girl Scout ever been away from home for more than one night without family members? • Can she keep track of her personal belongings? • Can she take care of basic hygiene needs such as showering, toileting, and brushing her teeth without assistance? • Can she cope with unfamiliar people, new places, and group schedules? • Does she enjoy making friends? • Does she do well and enjoy group situations? • Does she enjoy being outdoors? Can she see bugs or other “nature” friends without being frightened? • Will she be comfortable at camp without being able to call or text her family and friends?

What You Need To Know ... Who can attend Girl Scout camp? Camp is open to all girls who are entering 1st through 12th grade in Fall of 2018. Each program has entering grade requirements or prerequisites which must be met to safeguard the health, safety, and well-being of all campers. This is to ensure girls are enrolled in programs that are age appropriate as assessed by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. My camper is not a member of Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails but would like to attend camp. Can she attend? Are there additional fees? Girl Scout camp is open to all girls, but we do require all girls become registered Girl Scouts for insurance purposes. Non-Girl Scouts may register at nmgirlscouts.org and pay the $40 registration fee or begin the process on their camp registration form. Girls do not need to be an active member of a Girl Scout troop in order to attend camp. Where will campers sleep? Girls are grouped in units. Depending on their program choice, girls may sleep in cabins or platform tents on a cot or bunk bed with a mattress at Camp Elliott Barker, or adirondacks, hogans, or platform tents on a cot or bunk bed with a mattress at Rancho del Chaparral. Each unit has trained counselors housed in separate quarters within the living unit, but close enough to supervise campers. We cannot guarantee what sleeping quarters your camper will be assigned. Can my camper attend camp with a buddy/ friend? Absolutely! During registration, a buddy’s name can be listed. Buddies must be registered for the same session. We are not able to honor requests for more than one buddy.
Who is the camp staff? Members of our camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring individuals selected based on maturity, program experience, and genuine desire to work with girls. All of our staff are interviewed, screened, and background checked. Counselors are at least 18 years old and Program Specialists and Supervisors are at least 21 years old. Camp staffers are from New Mexico and other states in the U.S. We also recruit a portion of our staff from many different countries around the world. These staff members share their culture with the campers through camp activities. Many of our staffers are returning from previous summers, some with as many as 20 years of summer camp staff and administration experience. What type of training and certification does camp staff receive? Before camp begins, staff attend an intensive onsite training as well as mid-summer in-service training which includes activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building, program age level characteristics, dealing with homesickness, and more. Program Specialists have additional training and certification in their program area, such as archery, ropes course, and life guarding. Certain program staff are also trained in wilderness first aid. We follow Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, Girl Scouts of the USA, and American Camp Association standards for staff training and certification requirements. My camper has special dietary needs or restrictions. How are menus managed at camp? Menus are planned with the general camp population and economy of associated costs in mind. We will make every attempt to provide for special dietary needs within the scope of our regular menus. Please note dietary restrictions on registration form and/ or contact the camp registrar at customercare@ nmgirlscouts.org or 505.343.1040 for more information. To ensure we meet your campers needs, this information must be provided at least two weeks prior to her camp session.

Frequently Asked Questions My child has special needs. Can she attend camp? Each year, many girls with special needs participate in the camp program. Girls must be able to function in a 6:1 girl-to-adult ratio if entering 1st to 3rd grade or an 8:1 girl-to-adult ratio if entering 4th grade or above. Special needs may include physical, medical, developmental, dietary, behavioral, or communicative abilities. It is our hope to be able to serve all girls wishing to attend camp. We reserve the right to make decisions of participation based on the extent of the girl’s needs and our ability to meet those needs in the camp setting, as well as other factors as deemed appropriate. We are concerned about the health and safety of all campers, and we want to ensure we have appropriate professional and medical services to meet needs. Please contact the camp director at 505.343.1040 to discuss your girl’s needs and the program specifics at least two weeks prior. Can my camper call home during the week? Campers are not permitted to make or receive phone calls. We encourage independence and selfreliance during camp. The on-site camp director will contact parents if a camper has a medical problem, is excessively homesick, or has an emergency. Please let your child know before camp that she will not be able to call home and that you are comfortable with this. Encourage her to send letters home during the week, and we encourage you to bring letters for your girl when you drop her off at camp or send a camp care package (see page 31). Please keep your girl’s cell phone and tech gadgets safe at home. We are a “tech-free” camp and ask that all electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, and music devices stay at come. If a camper brings a cell phone or other electronic device to camp, it will be confiscated, kept in the office safe, and returned on pick-up day. Thank you for your support with this camp policy.
Can I visit my camper during a camp session? To help maintain program continuity and ensure the safety of campers, visitors are only allowed at camp during open house and during arrival/departure hours. What happens if my camper has a difficult time adjusting to camp? Camp staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, resident camp staff reserves the right to send any girl home who consistently exhibits inappropriate behavior or endangers herself or others. A camper’s parent/ guardian is responsible for picking her up and fees will not be refunded. What measures are taken to ensure my child’s safety while at camp? We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps. Each camp follows the guidelines set by the American Camp Association as well as those set by Girl Scouts of the USA through Safety Activity Checkpoints. Staff is housed in close proximity to camper cabins and tents, and buildings and grounds are checked nightly. All camp staff and adults spending the night at camp must pass a criminal background check (with the exception of Family Camp).Gates are kept locked during resident camp sessions except during check in/check out. If our plans change, how do I cancel my child’s session? Can I get a refund? Please notify our camp registrar as soon as possible if plans change, and your camper can no longer attend a camp session. Once you register for a session, you are committed to that session and are responsible for full payment. Refunds are available under special circumstances. Please see page 23 for our refund and cancellation policy. When is the last day to register for camp? Primary camp registration closes on May 31. Late registrations can be made if space is available and the session fee must be paid in full at the time of registration.

Rancho del Chaparral a traditional summer camp
Rancho del Chaparral has been part of the Girl Scout camp tradition in New Mexico for nearly 50 years. Rancho is located outside of Cuba in the Jemez Mountains in a forested area covered in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer on more than 1,100 acres. Girls experience the beauty and wildlife as deer, elk, and a variety of native wildlife can be spotted near camp. Housing units include platform tents, adirondacks, and hogans with cots or bunk beds with mattresses. Each unit has a pavilion or shelter for group activities, a campfire circle, and a wash area with sinks and latrines. Meals are served family style at Casa Grande Dining Hall. Girls explore Rancho’s creek and the Mystery Tree, visit the archery range, riding arena, do arts & crafts, go on trail hikes, and go overnight camping.

Camp Elliott Barker a high adventure camp
Camp Elliott Barker celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. Camp Barker is a high adventure camp located in the Carson National Forest in the mountain town of Angel Fire on more than 500 acres of pine forest, meadows, and wet lands. Camp Barker offers a high and low ropes course, archery, horse programming, and traditional camp activities as well as high adventure programming with canoeing, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting. Housing units include platform tents and cabins with cots or bunk beds with mattresses. Each unit has campfire circles and wash areas with sinks and bathrooms—the cabin unit houses a brand-new shower house. Meals are served family style in Hoffman Hall. Girls visit the Wishing Chair, explore the newly revitalized Blackbird Pond, do arts & crafts, visit our on-site observatory, and hike through the Underworld.

Rancho Resident Camp Programs Resident camp sessions are either 4 or 6 days long, depending on program type and age group. Program descriptions give an idea of what your girl will be doing during her camp session; activities listed may be changed or modified as needed depending on weather, fire restrictions, or other conditions beyond our control. Girls earn one badge appropriate to their age/Girl Scouting level during a camp session, which can be purchased at the council store. Barker Resident & Day Camp Programs Resident camp session are 6 days long. Sessions with day camp options are noted (see page 23 for more information). Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails Equestrian Program For the camper who loves horses, our New Mexico Trails Equestrian Program is for you! Our horse programs at both Camp Elliott Barker and Rancho del Chaparral have been re-calibrated to offer a more dynamic experience for campers of all experience levels. Campers in each session will be placed in groups based on a skill level assessment determined by the Equestrian Director upon arrival at camp. Whether you’ve never ridden a horse before or you are a seasoned horsewoman, our well-trained staff look forward to working with each group to ensure lessons are fun and challenging.

Outdoor Leadership Program The Outdoor Leadership Program series is designed for Girl Scouts ready to take on an active leadership position in an outdoor setting. Outdoor Leadership programs focus on developing leadership and outdoor skills and learning how to teach and lead camp activities like making a campfire, planning a cookout, leading songs & games, program creation, and the principles of Leave No Trace. Girls in this program often work alongside camp staff to help with all-camp activities or take the lead in girl-selected camp service projects. Girls also learn the basics of backcountry camping and go on an overnight camping trip.

This program is based on the Girl Scouts of the USA Program Aide training guidelines with emphasis on outdoor skills. How to Register Follow these simple steps for your ultimate Girl Scout summer camp experience: 1. Select your camp session! 2. Fill out the Resident Camp Registration Form. 3. Remember! If you register before March 31, you receive the Early Bird rate, so don’t delay! 4. Multi-session discounts! If you know you love camp, register for multiple sessions at once and get a $25 discount for every session after the first. That means you’ll save $25 for two sessions, $50 for three sessions, $75 for four sessions, and so on! 5. Not a Girl Scout? Register at nmgirlscouts.org now to make the camp registration process easier! 6. Email, mail, fax, or drop off your completed registration form to GSNMT’s council office with a minimum deposit of $100 per camp session (plus your $40 membership fee, if applicable). 7. Once your registration form is received and payment is processed, you will get an email confirmation with all required forms and important camp info! 8. Fill out your forms! You’ll be emailed a health history form, photo release, camper contract, get to know your camper, and camper release form to be filled out and handed over to camp staff when your camper is dropped off at camp or for the bus. 9. Make sure you’re paid in full at least three weeks before your session starts to guarantee your spot. 10. Pack for camp! Check your packing list twice to make sure you bring everything you need. 11. Head to camp. Take the bus, carpool, get a ride with your family--however you come to camp, we’ll be happy to see you! 12. Enjoy Camp! Take pictures! Make friends! See nature! 13. Information & Financial Policies Residential Camp
A minimum deposit of $100 per resident camp session is due at time of registration plus $40 Girl Scout registration fee, if applicable. Deposits cannot be made by program voucher. This deposit does not guarantee a spot for your camper. A session must be paid in full in order to secure your camper’s spot no later than three weeks prior to the start of the selected resident camp session. At that time, all unpaid spots will be open to wait-listed girls, who will be given the option to register for the session. Primary registration closes on May 31, 2018. Late registrations will be accepted if space is available; the session must be paid in full at time of registration.

Troop & Family Camp
Payment is due in full at time of registration. Troop Campers must be registered Girl Scouts; adult members must have an approved background check on file by the camp registration date for your camp. Troops must adhere to Safety Wise ratios only. If additional adults are required for medical or behavioral purposes, please contact the camp director at 505.343.1040 to make arrangements before registering. Family campers must have a minimum of one registered Girl Scout within their family to attend.
Sister Discount
We offer a sibling discount of $5 per sibling after the first sister registers. Please indicate the name of the first sibling on your registration form to validate this discount. It applies to resident camp and day camp sessions only.
Early Bird Pricing
Any Resident Camp Registration Form received on or postmarked by March 31, 2018, will be billed at the discounted rate published in this program guide. Any registration received after this date will be billed the regular fee.
Cancellations/Refunds
In the event your camper can no longer attend her registered camp session, your prompt written cancellation notification is required. This helps us better plan and prepare for camp and to allow any girls on the wait list the opportunity to attend. •
If your girl still wishes to attend camp, but can no longer make the original date selected, any fees paid can be applied to another session if space is available. (Fees are not transferable to another girl.)

A refund of fees paid minus a $50 administration fee will be made if cancellation is received in writing three weeks prior to the session begin date.
Some sessions are offered as Day Camps at Camp Elliott Barker for local girls. Girl must be registered Girl Scouts. Day camp sessions will run Monday through Thursday of the stated camp sessions from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Day camp session include all programming for the day, lunch, and snacks. More details will be provided upon registration. Day Camp sessions must be paid in full at time of registration. Does not include transportation.

Cancellations made less than three weeks prior to camp session start date will only be refunded if the camper moves out of state due to military relocation, has been certified to be ill by a physician, or there is a family emergency such as severe sickness or death of an immediate family member. Documentation of above circumstances should accompany the cancellation notification.
Multi-Session Discount

A full refund of all fees will be provided if a session is canceled by the council due to insufficient registration, acts of nature, or other reasons beyond our control.

Refunds are not issued if a camper leaves before the end of the session due to disciplinary action or homesickness. If a camper leaves early due to physical illness or injury, the camp fees will be prorated, minus the administrative fee, for refund.
Day Camp
If you register one camper for more than one session of resident camp, that camper qualifies for a $25 discount for every session after the first. You must register for all sessions at the same time; the discount does not apply to additional sessions added after the initial registration form is accepted. This discount applies to both Early Bird and Resident Camp registration. Multi-session discount is based on individual camper registrations and cannot be combined with other campers, even campers in the same household.

Camperships
In an effort to make camp an experience available to all girls, regardless of socioeconomic background, need-based Camperships are available for one resident camp session to girls demonstrating need. The Campership Application must be completed and attached to the camp registration and submitted with the $50 deposit by May 1, 2018. A determination will be made after the May 1 deadline and recipients will be notified 10 business days after the May 1 deadline of any awarded amount. Any registration received before the March 31st Early Bird deadline qualifies for the reduced price. Girls must be registered Girl Scouts to receive financial assistance. Campership funds are limited; assistance is based on financial need. Camperships are not available to adults attending programs. All requests and allocations are confidential. Transportation To Resident Camp Campers can opt into taking the bus one way or round trip to camp ($10 each way), or may arrive/depart at camp via car. Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails offers bus transportation to both of our resident camps as a service to help get girls to camp safely and with as low a cost impact on families as possible. Buses to both camps will start at the GSNMT Council office on the first day of a camp session and make limited stops along the way to camp. Please Note: If your girl is signed up to take the bus to/from camp, the camp staff is expecting your girl to check in/out with the bus. Troop Camp Girl Scout Camp isn’t complete without Troop Camp! Troop Camp is offered at both Rancho del Chaparral and Camp Elliott Barker nearly every weekend of the summer. Your troop can select its desired level of programming: Bring Your Own Program or Choose Your Adventure! These special sessions are open to Troops and their leaders. Safety Wise adults only. Please ensure your Troop has the proper ratios according to Volunteer Essentials. Troop Camp If your Troop requires additional adults for medical or behavioral reasons, Registration please contact the camp director at 505.343.1040 to make arrangements. Opens March 1! No bus transportation will be provided to/from Troop Camp. Troop leaders will provide supervision to girls at all times.

We provide food and lodging for your Troop, as well as evening activities (such as campfire). Your troop selects two camp activities led by our camp staff from activities like archery, arts & crafts, hikes, or outdoor cooking. The rest of the time, it’s up to you and your girls to design your program.
Bring your troop and we’ll do the rest. In addition to food and lodging, our camp staff provides a full day of programming options (minus a few hours to rest!) including arts & crafts, archery, hikes, as well as all your nighttime activities like campfire, barn dance, or counselor hunt.

Troop Camp Registration Follow these simple steps for your ultimate Troop Camp camp experience: Please Note: Troop Camp Registration opens March 1! 1. Select your Troop Camp session date and program: “Bring Your Own Program” or “Choose Your Adventure” 2. Complete and turn in the the Troop Camp Registration Form before May 31. Family Camp Family Camp provides a great way for girls to get to know camp before they are ready to come on their own. Family Camp is also an awesome way to spend some family time together during the summer! You come to camp, we do the rest! Family campers get lodging, food, and full programming for a weekend of Family Camp stress-free fun. Adults are responsible for supervising their children Registration during Family Camp. Did you know that you can sell cookies to pay for camp? You can! Through the Girl Scout Cookie Sale, girls can set their cookie sale goals to earn Program Vouchers which can pay for GSNMT events and camp AND Service Unit events! About Program Vouchers Program Vouchers are valid May 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019 and can be redeemed through council for program events, camp sessions and service unit events. Program vouchers are cumulative, so if a girl selects program vouchers for every level they are offered (starting at 185 boxes, on up), she will have a total of $375 in program vouchers. Troop Proceeds. Troops earn $0.65 in proceeds for every box sold! This is a great way for your troop to work together to plan your Girl Scout activities and set goals. You can use these troop proceeds to go to Troop Camp together, too! The cookie sale starts February 12... so, set your cookie selling goal and we’ll see you at camp!
