2019 Annual Impact Report

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR AND CEO Dear Friends of Girl Scouts: Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey continues to build on its position as one of the strongest Girl Scout councils and youth-serving organizations in the nation. Serving more than 15 percent of girls ages 5 to 18, double the national average, our council has the third largest girl market share in the country. Through our great program offerings and customer service to girl and adult members, GSNNJ was also fourth in the nation in both girl and adult member retention. One of our key efforts last year was to serve girls in Kindergarten, offering great program activities and support to new volunteers. As a result of these efforts, GSNNJ was recognized for serving more than 20 percent of girls in Kindergarten throughout northern New Jersey. Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey also impacted more than 3,100 girls through our Learn, Explore, Aspire, Dream (L.E.A.D.) initiative, which enables girls to participate in Girl Scouting in areas where volunteers and resources are limited. In addition, council-led programming served more than 16,000 girl participants and 144 Girl Scouts earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl can earn in Girl Scouting. Gold Award Girl Scouts focus on finding sustainable solutions to society’s challenges and complete projects in their community that can change the world. In the coming year, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey looks forward to rolling out a new mobile Girl Scout Leadership Experience, that will bring badge and Journey activities and supplies to communities that cannot access the current activities and events that we offer. In addition, GSNNJ will expand the Outdoor and STEM experiences offered to allow girls to focus on new badges that were launched by Girl Scouts of the USA in the summer of 2019. With continued technology, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey looks for new ways to engage girls, volunteers, and families through Girl Scouts and helps them to understand the lifelong learning that happens in Girl Scouting. We continue to focus on expanding our impact in all communities and strive to build more girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Thank you for your continued support of the work we are doing to help all girls reach their full potential. Sincerely,

Bette M. Simmons, Ed.D. Chair, Board of Directors

Betty A. Garger President and CEO

The contents of this Annual Report reflect the Fiscal year 2018-2019. Please note that since the unprecedented quarantine due to COVID 19, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey has pivoted to support our girls, volunteers, and families in a very different way. GSNNJ launched Girl Scouts at Home, an online platform to enable girls to participate in Girl Scouting virtually, working on badges and connecting with Girl Scouts throughout the region and the country. To support Girl Scout troops and the cookie program, Cookie Connection was created which allows and encourages public support of local Girl Scouts while providing donations of cookie to frontline workers. Girl Scouts throughout northern New Jersey have answered the call to help the community by sewing masks, sending Trefoil Thoughts of care and concern, collecting food, and creating care packages to bring positivity and hope to our communities. Our Girl Scouts and volunteers are awe-inspiring in their support and contributions during this pandemic.

GIRL SCOUTS IN ACTION

LEARNING TO CODE ROSIE THE RIVETER EDUCATION DAY Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey toured Picatinny Arsenal for a “Rosie the Riveter” education day. Rosie the Riveter represented women in World War II who worked in factories and shipyards, produced munitions and war supplies. Many women took over jobs typically held by men, who were serving in the military. Girls received a behind the scenes look at their work in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), toured Picatinny Labs, and saw firsthand the machinery used there to work with metal and shielding made for tanks. In addition, the girls learned how Picatinny uses 3D printers to make robots and armor.

Through a partnership between Girl Scouts of the USA and Microsoft, Troop 97331 attended a free robotics workshop offered in the Paramus Microsoft store. Microsoft staff explained the multitude of tasks robots can perform. Equipped with their own work stations and computers, the girls learned basic coding. Using Microsoft Surface, girls presented their robot and coding project in order to earn the Girl Scout Programming Robots badge.

Officials at Picatinny showed a presentation on the history of the arsenal located in Rockaway, including its involvement in the revolutionary war through its present use. The Girl Scouts’ visit coincided with D-Day, when Allied forces invaded the beaches at Normandy, France in 1944. Officials told the girls how the armory was instrumental in providing ammunitions needed to soldiers for that mission and many of the arsenal’s staff were physically involved in those battles.

SENSATIONAL STARS Eighty-five Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies attended a Sensational Stars event at Grant Elementary School in Dumont. Using the Girl Scouts’ Star Lab, the girls learned about constellations and how to spot them in the night sky. They also created star wheels to take home.

GIRL SCOUTS IN ACTION

CAREER NETWORKING FORUM RIGHT TO VOTE As part of an ongoing collaboration with the League of Women Voters in Morris County, Chatham Girl Scouts joined the Fourth of July parade where the league and Girl Scouts marked the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. Prior to the parade, Girl Scouts also participated in the Voter Girl Project, which teaches girls about the history of the 19th Amendment.

GSNNJ partnered with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women/Bergen-Passaic Chapter to offer a Career Networking event to girls at the Academy of Earth and Space Science (Panther Academy) in Paterson. The Coalition has a similar mission to Girl Scouts in that the group promotes leadership development and gender equity in the areas of health, education, and economic empowerment for girls and young women. The program enabled 30 girls to meet professional women in various careers and participate in speed networking. Girls received the professionals’ bios in advance and had 2 minutes to meet with each woman and ask questions they had prepared. The professionals detailed their career path and spoke of the obstacles they faced in reaching their career goals. Girls learned how to approach their career aspirations, what skills they would need to achieve them, and gleaned insight into their daily work. In addition, girls received the women’s contact information so they could be mentored further after the event was over.

RESPECTING AUTHORITY Troop 97939 met with Police Officer Rob to learn about his job and earn the Respect Authority Girl Scout Daisy petal. The girls learned the need for authority figures and the importance of respecting them for the safety of the community.

Many of the women who participated were members of the Coalition and represented the follow occupations: doctor, lawyer, marketing professional, mortician, nurse, councilwoman, college professor, court executive, technology professional, and makeup artist.

SUMMER DAY CAMP 2019 More than 2,800 girls enjoyed day camp at Jockey Hollow Day Camp, in Mendham Township, and Lake Rickabear Day Camp, in Kinnelon, over a seven-week period in July and August. With a variety of fun program themes from science to drama, and sports to cooking, girls enjoyed fun-filled days at the two program sites.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE The girls of Troop 97195 had a weekend of outdoor adventure when they attended Animal Explorers at Jockey Hollow. They learned about a variety of animals, played games, planted flowers, sang campfire songs, made S’mores, and spent the night in a cabin.

Campers learned how to swim with daily lessons with certified instructors at Jockey Hollow Day Camp and Lake Rickabear Day Camp. Grouped by grades, girls enjoyed team and self-esteem building exercises in the Low Ropes Challenge Course and zip line, and tried their hand at the archery range. Many girls enjoyed the outdoor adventures of hiking through the trails, exploring local streams and wildlife, and earning Girl Scout badges. For the first time in many years, girls were able to participate in pony and horsemanship programs at Lake Rickabear Day Camp. In total, 414 girls rode ponies and horses at both camps. At Girl Scout camp, girls learned to work as a team, build self-esteem, and become environmentally conscious. Almost 40 girls earned their Counselor in Training pin, and transitioned out of their camper role into Junior Counselors.

TROOP HONORED Troop 96094 was recognized by the Hopatcong Environmental Commission with proclamations for adopting a half mile section of the Lake Hopatcong trail. The girls cleaned up the trail twice, held community hikes, promoted hiking safety and encouraged the local community to go outdoors and exercise. The culmination of their efforts was a celebration of National Trails Day in June 2019. During this event, the girls created booths displaying information on trail safety, first aid, proper nutrition, and the history of the trail.

LEARNING LIFE SKILLS Troop 95592 collected donations of cookies for the Cookies from Home program, as well as other local charities. They said their experiences taught them the power of community involvement and giving back. The cookie program also taught them marketing and money management, skills that they will keep for the rest of their lives.

FABULOUS 425 CLUB AND GOAL GETTERS Fabulous 425 Club Girl Scouts who sold more than 425 packages of cookies during the Girl Scout Cookie Program were invited to bring four guests to spend the day at Lake Rickabear for a full day of fun including zip lining, archery, boating, swimming, mini golf, and crafts. Girls also participated in a workshop that taught them how to set goals and offered input on cookie rewards for the following year.

TRIPS, ACTIVITIES FUNDED Troop 61017 has participated in the cookie program for many years and learned about running a business, the fine details of retail, money collection for product, and marketing. Funds earned from the Cookie Program enabled the girls to attend the Sow What Journey Program, GIRLtopia, the REACH program (about relational aggression), and Maple Sugaring and Cake Decorating workshops, as well as their annual overnight encampment at Lake Rickabear.

Goal Getters More than 350 Girl Scouts became Goal Getters and earned a free week at day camp by completing three service hours and selling 175 cookie packages during the Girl Scout Cookie Program, plus selling 30 nut and candy products and six magazines during the Fall Product Program. Our financial literacy programs help girls learn to set goals and create a plan to reach them; make a decision on their own and as a team; create a budget and handle money; find their voice and build confidence through interactions with customers; and act ethically in business.
