Celebrating Women Taking the Lead Virtual Friday, December 4, 2020 8:30 A.M. - 9:30 A.M.

Welcome, all friends of Girl Scouting! Thank you for joining us in celebrating our 24th Annual Breakfast Badge Awards! We could not be more thankful that you’ve joined us virtually this morning as Girl Scouts of Connecticut (GSOFCT) honors three extraordinary “Women Taking the Lead”: Dr. Jessica Abrantes-Figueiredo, Trinity Health of New England; Dr. Swathi Rachoor, Medical Director, Clinical Resource Management, Integrated Care Partners, Hartford Healthcare; and Dr. Kathrin Jansen, Senior Vice President, Head of Vaccine Research and Development at Pfizer, Inc. These women are being honored for serving as healthcare heroes who have made significant contributions this year during the COVID-19 pandemic that continues to impact the world. Despite the emerging complexities for our global community, GSOFCT continues to offer Girl Scouts across the state with the opportunity to take on some of the biggest challenges and problems our planet faces. Girl Scouts introduces girls of every age to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experiences relevant to everyday life. Since the beginning, STEM has been a core pillar of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience—and girls are more eager than ever to take the lead in this critical field. Girl Scouts of Connecticut serves over 22,000 girls and over 11,000 adult members across the state of Connecticut. Offering hands-on, girl-led, girl-centered learning in STEM, the outdoors, and entrepreneurship, and abundant opportunities to develop invaluable life skills, Girl Scouts helps all girls take the lead early and often. During uncertain times, one thing that remains incredibly clear is the need to secure the future for our girls. Your attendance virtually here today is not just about acknowledging the successes of three outstanding women; your presence also means that you support girls across the state. Their stories and experiences are inspiring, and help shape our continued commitment to the Girl Scout Mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Each of our honorees represents exactly what it means to be a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, and leader. They are true trailblazers who have taken the lead when the world needs them most and embody all of the characteristics we at Girl Scouts encourage our girls to build so they – like our honorees – can make a lasting impact. I hope that you will enjoy hearing our honorees’ stories of success as we present them with their own unique badge! Thank you once again for being here this morning. We hope you will find this morning’s program to be inspirational and you will learn a little more about the power of Girl Scouting. And, please join me in congratulating our 2020 Breakfast Badge honorees: Dr. Jessica Abrantes-Figueiredo, Dr. Swathi Rachoor, and Dr. Kathrin Jansen. Wishing everyone a very happy holiday and new year filled with good health and happiness. Warmly, Karen Sheehan Interim CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut

Science is resilient. It can overcome diseases, create cures, and, yes, even beat pandemics. It has the methodology and the rigor to withstand even the most arduous scrutiny. It keeps asking questions and, until there’s a breakthrough, it isn’t done. That’s why, when the world needs answers, we turn to science. Because in the end, Science will win.
