A note from the Camp Director

Hi Campers and Families!

I’m Flapatoous, and I’m so excited to welcome you back to camp this summer! Whether you’re a returning camper or joining us for the first time, I can’t wait to create unforgettable memories together.

This is my fourth summer with GSSJC. I’ve loved my time at Misty Meadows Ranch and Camp Agnes Arnold, and I’m thrilled to continue combining activities between the two camps. Plus, this year, some campers from Misty Meadows Ranch will get to take a trip to Casa Mare—how cool is that?

Camp has been a part of my life for 23 summers, first as a camper and then as staff, and it’s where I’ve made some of my best memories. I’m so excited to help you make yours this summer, whether you join us for overnight or day camp.

See you soon!

Seven Ways Summer Camp Brings Out Her Best

Summer is when some of the most fun childhood memories are made, but did you know that it’s also an awesome opportunity for your girl to grow, learn, and become her best self? Here are seven amazing benefits your girl will get from her summer camp experience.

She’ll make new friends – There’s nothing quite like giggling over games in the bunk or singing songs with new besties around a campfire. That’s why it’s actually good to send her to camp where she might not know many (or any) other girls! Having a diverse group of friends, not just kids she knows from school, will broaden her horizons and help her see her own worth, too.

She’ll see all she can be – In an all-girl environment like Girl Scout summer camp, girls are more comfortable trying new outdoor activities, and they get to take the lead every single time–meaning there’s plenty of room at the top for your girl to take charge and flex her muscle, both when it comes to outdoor adventure and crucial leadership skills that will last her a lifetime.

She’ll turn off her devices and tune in to nature – Getting out in nature is more exciting than any app she might have on her device. Unplugging for a while will keep her more present and truly enjoying every moment instead of simply watching it from a screen.

She’ll grow her grit – She might scrape a knee or elbow while she’s away–and that’s a good thing! When she learns to get back up after minor setbacks she’s building her resilience and learning that she’s a lot tougher than she thinks.

She’ll meet new mentors – Having a variety of awesome role models will help your girl see the many ways to be successful and happy in life. And the incredibly supportive staff and counselors at your girl’s summer camp are ready to step up to the plate and inspire!

She’ll gain independence – Being away from home–especially if that’s a new thing for her!–might be a bit intimidating to both your daughter and you. But having that time away to explore and try activities on her own will make her more self-reliant and able to discover new things to share and teach you when she returns home.

She’ll have tons of time for play – Playtime is anything but a waste of time. In fact, studies show that play allows the neurons in a child’s brain to form new connections–and that this rewiring helps boost emotional intelligence, decision-making skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

The truth is, sending your girl off to camp is one of the best gifts you can give her. The fun, outdoor adventure, and friends will enrich her life and–perhaps without her even noticing–give her the courage, people skills, and leadership chops to succeed at whatever she sets her mind to. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Day Camp

Not ready for overnight camp or trying to beat the heat this summer? Join us at day camp for songs, games, crafts, and more! Earn badges while making new friends and trying new things. Day camp programs are being offered at Program Place for Girls in Central Houston and the Katy Mills Resource center at Katy Mills Mall this year.

Day camp sessions are each a week-long with program running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Brownies and Juniors will earn a badge during each session related to the theme of the week. Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and earn hours toward any awards or projects their working on. Snacks are provided twice a day, and campers will need to bring their own bag lunch.

Each day camp has its own unique traditions and special activities. For example, the camper at Katy Mills Day Camp who wins the first game of the day gets to choose a counselor to spin the wheel of doom, with counselor “shenanigans” ranging from a pie in the face, pool noodles arms for the day, and more. Campers attending day camp at Program Place for Girls will visit Levy Park multiple times a session and will get a chance to play at the splash pad.

Volunteer-Led Day and Twilight Camps

Looking for even more summer camp opportunities? Volunteer-led day and twilight camps are offered in indoor and outdoor spaces all over the council! These camps are led by our amazing volunteers with training and support from the Outdoor Experience department. Each of these camps typically run for 3 to 5 days with hours varying from program to program.

Brownie and Junior Price: $300/session Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors Price: $150/session

Don't forget a water bottle and a lunch everyday.

While day camps run from the morning to afternoon, twilight camps run in the evenings to avoid the hottest part of the day and allow working parents to get involved in camp. These programs offer a great introduction to camp for younger girls and can aid them in progressing to longer and overnight camp programs in the future. Additionally, older girls are given leadership opportunities and develop a sense of ownership of camps.

During Summer 2024, we had nine volunteer-led camps across council, and this summer we’re hoping to have even more! To learn about the camps are being offered in your area, keep an eye out for more information in your community newsletter and social media. If you are interested in starting a camp in your area, please contact Natalie Jares at customerservice@sjgs.org with your interest.
