Coordinator of Residential Learning Communities

General Description: The Coordinator of Residential Learning Communities is responsible for the management of the Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) sponsored by University Housing. The Coordinator will partner with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, and other campus partners through RLC advisory boards to maintain and improve communities. The Coordinator will work to support the academic mission of the university through establishing and maintaining departmental initiatives to support high impact programs for residential students across both residential campuses. Additionally, this position will support departmental efforts related to residential curriculum, assessment, and other residential learning initiatives within University Housing. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with the members of the Residence Education Leadership Team (RELT) and Residence Education staff to accomplish multiple assignments and tasks. This position directly supervises 1-2 graduate assistants and reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Learning.

Job Specifications/Required Qualifications

● Master’s Degree

● Two (2) years of professional experience post master’s degree

Preferred Qualifications and Professional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

● Master’s Degree preferred in Higher Education Student Services, Counseling or a Related Field.

● Four (4) years of post-masters, progressive experience in a student learning initiatives, living learning communities, supervision, and collaborative strategies.

● A strong desire to work directly with college students.

● Demonstrated skills in the following areas: leadership, supervision, crisis intervention, group dynamics, flexibility, professionalism, co-curricular competencies, student development, academic success & support initiatives, and programming in a residence hall setting.

● Experience working with or managing a Residential Learning Community.

● Committed to education, celebration of diversity and raising social awareness.

● Ability to move objects up to 25 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.

Remuneration/Benefits

The Coordinator of Residential Learning Communities position is a twelve month position. Salary is $40,200$50,300 A state employee benefits package is also included. Additional benefits include: Relocation expenses of up to $500 for eligible expenses, limited meal plan, professional development funds.

Duties and Responsibilities

A. Residential Learning Communities:

● Support efforts to provide seamless living learning environments that enhance the achievement of classroom learning objectives for students by partnering with students, academic staff, faculty, stakeholders, and hall staff.

● Provide support for the creation and implementation of opportunities for residents and faculty members to interact outside of the traditional classroom setting.

● Provide support and guidance to Advisory Boards for each Residential Learning Community. Serve as a co-advisor to the board members to ensure the board completes the following:

○ Plans and implements an orientation program for RLC participants;

○ Facilitate advisory board meetings;

○ Ensure each community plans and implements strategies to achieve RLC goals;

○ Establishes a communication plan for community members from orientation through completion of community involvement.

● Assess RLC student retention from year to year. Provide recommendations to the Residence Education Leadership Team for initiatives to maintain or increase retention.

● Ensure the integration of the co-curricular program of Residential Learning Communities. Help facilitate a seamless connection between academic programs or interests and the connected First Year Experience courses, RLC 1000, and in-hall community development strategies.

● Aid in the development and updates needed for the online learning platform utilized for Residential Learning Communities (i.e. D2 Learning or Folio).

● Serve as the primary instructor for RLC 1000 courses.

● Ensure housing staff are present and supportive of the connected First Year Experience and CORE 2000 courses.

● Partner with academic offices including, but not limited to, Office of Career & Professional Development, Academic Advising, First Year Experience, Academic Success Center, and more. Maintain strong working relationships with faculty and staff in Academic Affairs.

● Attend various RLC events as needed (may include evening and weekend hours).

● Support the development of materials for RLC 1000, a connected course for specific Residential Learning Communities.

● Provide training and supervision for student staff and peer advisors supporting residential students within the Residential Learning Communities.

● Assist with the community development of each individual Residential Learning Community.

● Responsible for the well-being, general atmosphere, programs, and initiatives of the Residential Learning Communities by coordinating efforts with appropriate staff.

● Assist with the marketing and recruitment of Residential Learning Communities.

● Work to assess needs, develop outcomes, develop learning opportunities, and evaluate outcomes of program initiatives.

● Design and implement intentional learning strategies that address the needs of residents.

● Support the application and assignment process for Residential Learning Communities.

B. Academic Initiatives:

● Participate in on-going development opportunities related to being an instructor for a non-credit bearing course.

● Support the implementation of the academic success program of residential students within Residential Learning Communities.

● Create academic recognition initiatives for students and student staff who academically succeed each semester.

● Collaborate with various campus partners including, but not limited to, University Libraries, Academic Success Center, Student Success, TRIO, Student Support Services, and others to provide academic support opportunities for residential students.

C. Residential Curriculum:

● Work with the Associate Director to identify and prioritize annual residential curriculum priorities for Residential Learning Communities. Work with RLC staff and partners to incorporate learning goals into annual community plans.

● Ensure curricular student success and learning goals are communicated to campus partners involved in Residential Learning Communities and Academic Initiatives.

● Support ongoing needs of the residential curriculum.

D. Supervision & Leadership: The Coordinator is responsible for the supervision of 1-2 graduate students Responsibilities include:

● Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate graduate assistant(s) in collaboration with the Graduate Assistant Recruitment Process. Provide on-going guidance, support, and feedback to supervisees.

● Identify knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance of assigned staff. Establish a corresponding training and development plan for assigned staff.

● Meet regularly with direct reports to assure shared understanding of tasks, accomplishments, concerns, and upcoming needs.

● Work collaboratively with peers and Assistant Directors of Residence Education to provide evaluative information for Resident Directors.

● Participate in Residence Education and University Housing meetings and activities as appropriate.

E. Emergency Response & Crisis Management:

● Serve as a member of the Residence Education Leadership Team On Call staff responsible for the welfare of 5,000+ students during assigned duty weeks.

● Direct and actively respond to various crisis situations including student health (mental and physical), alleged violence, facilities concerns, etc.

● Communicate and follow up with students and parents as allowed under established policies.

● Advise individuals and groups of students with personal or academic concerns, making referrals when appropriate.

F. Budget & Financial Administration:

● Manage assigned budgets within established guidelines.

● Monitor assigned budgets and work with staff to assure successful budget management.

● Ensure all applicable policies, procedures, and controls are applied and monitored.

G. Department, Division, University and Professional Engagement:

● Present programs and training workshops to students, staff, and faculty on campus as well as higher education peers at professional conferences.

● Stay abreast of current events and trends related to Residential Learning Initiatives.

● Collaborate with Director, Associate Directors, Assistant Directors for Residence Education, and other staff on projects and initiatives as needed.

● Serve on University and Departmental committees as assigned.

● Lead Departmental adjunct responsibilities as assigned.

● Represent University Housing at Enrollment Management events including Orientation, Admissions Recruitment Events, Eagle Previews, etc.

● Assist with recruitment, hiring, and training of Residence Education staff.

● Some evening and weekend work required.

H. Other responsibilities

• Respond to any departmental needs in the absence of the Assistant Director of Residential Learning.

• Performing other duties as assigned by University Housing Leadership
