Second-Place Finish Keeps Focus On Championship Georgia State finished second in the Sun Belt outdoor championships in 2014 and fifth in the Sun Belt indoor championships, improving in its second year in the league. Maybe the third time will be the charm for GSU to gain a track and field championship as it had done in 2011 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

team rise from seventh in 2013 to fifth place. The Panthers’ point total rose from 31 to 70 points with eight competitors earning All-Sun Belt Conference status with a top-eight finish. GSU had never competed for a championship indoors prior to the Sun Belt. “We hope to keep working our way toward the top,” England said.

Fifth-year head coach Chris England has a roster of 28 competitors and counts on the quality and talent to earn points up and down the roster.

“Competing in Birmingham all winter and having the Sun Belt meet there will be good for us,” he concluded.

Outdoors, GSU had a strong final day to climb to second in the Sun Belt meet in San Marcos, Texas. Georgia State scored 111 points, buoyed by 103 points in the track events. Those 103 points in track were 25 more than the nearest team in just track points. Eight Panthers earned All-Sun Belt status.

“I think we have 28 talented student-athletes who can all score points by being a top-eight finisher or better in their respective events at the Sun Belt championship meets,” England noted. “That overall talent base will be our strength, but we still don’t people competing in all the field events and will need to take full advantage of what strengths we have.”

“We are probably a little stronger outdoors due to the nature of the events because our recent history in many of those events has shown success and translated to points,” England said.

This year’s roster includes 11 newcomers among the 28 on the GSU track and field squad this year. “We’re developing a stronger team atmosphere and I am a firm believer in passion and attitude being key ingredients to success,” England said. “These 11 new members are learning our methods and systems and we feel good about the progress the whole team has made since this time last year.” For GSU in the Sun Belt, the indoor track championship meet in 2014 saw the

Consistent improvement is always a challenge. The team broke seven school records last year. “That trend is always there for the student-athletes to each measure up and improve their personal best and strive for the school record,” England pointed out.

“Our team GPA has been solid and on the rise and we are among the leaders on our campus and in the Sun Belt in academics. This is an area of pride and an important area we will always provide support and encouragement.” The coaching staff of England adds a pair of veterans as veteran coach Marlo Vinson, a former Georiga Southern head coach, comes to oversee the sprints, hurdles, relays and horizontal jumps. Veteran field coach Ricardo Page comes from Jackson State to tutor that area of throwers, as well as jumps and multis. “We have a master plan across the board and the coaching staff works hard to help the student-athletes reach their goals and perform their best.” SPRINTS/HURDLES With four returning sprinters and hurdlers, this area has even more success. “We look for big things from this group and have high goals for them,” England said. “They will be expected to carry their weight and help the team’s younger members learn how to train hard and then compete hard.” Wande Brewer has been all-conference in the 100 meters, 200 meters and with the relay teams. Her 23.47 in the 200m is a school record and was fourth at the Sun Belt championship after a fifth-place finish in the indoor championship. Her 11.72 in the 100m was seventh in the Sun Belt. Junior Ravin Gilbert was an NCAA Preliminaries qualifier with her 11.59 in the 100 meters and was fourth in the Sun Belt. She clocked a 24.02 in the 200m and had a 24.55 in the Sun Belt qualifier and was seventh in the finals. Carole Idolphine was second at the Sun Belt championship in the 400meter hurdles in 1:01.08. Junior Jasmyne Robinson was seventh indoors at the Sun Belt in 57.26 and had a best outdoors of 56.87. She was also on GSU’s relay teams. Junior Katherine Randolph is a combo sprinter/jumper who ran on the Panther relay teams.

Junior Breonca Reid transfers from Bethune-Cookman with 11.88 100m time and relay experience, Freshmen Allyson Goff and Aubreya Smith will add to this group. MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE Georgia State’s strong cross country program feeds into this strong area for the track and field team.. “We have multiple all-conference veteran performers returning in this area and we are excited to see what they can accomplish in 2015,” England said. GSU’s 2014 Sun Belt cross country champion, Hannah Stefanoff returns for one final track season in the 5,000m and 10,000m events, having finished fourth at the Sun Belt championships in both races. Senior Niamh Kearney was second in the Sun Belt indoor championship in the mile run with school indoor record 4:54.47, an outdoor best of 4:53.03 and had a 4:26.64 in the 1,500. She has a best of 2:15 in the 800m run. She was third at the Sun Belt championships in the steeplechase in 10:38. Redshirt senior Jennifer Rubel is another strong 5,000m and 10,000m runner for the Panthers. She was sixth at the Sun Belt outdoor championship in the 10,000m and eighth in the Sun Belt indoor meet in the 5,000m run. Redshirt senior Stella Christoforou transfered from Georgia for her final track and field season. At UGA, she had 2:09 in the 800m, 4:27 in the 1,500m and 10:40 in the steeplechase. Freshmen Nuria Ramirez, Jordan Townsley, Sarah Bearden and Melanie Hamilt all have potential for help and points as well. “We just need some good health and steady improvement all spring and this group should be strong come the May championship meet,” England said.

“This group progressed nicely as freshmen and we look forward to their continued improvement as they begin to score more points for the team,” coach England said.

The Panthers have depth and competition among a group of long jumpers to go with a freshman high jumper.

Leading the way is sophomore Alysiah Whittaker, who qualified for the NCAA Preliminaries last year with a school record shot put of 15.70m (51-6 1/4). She was fifth in the Sun Belt indoor championship in the shot put with 14.03m (46-0) and sixth in the outdoor championship in 14.29m (46-10 3/4). She was seventh in the discus at the championship in 46.68m (153-2).

Junior returnee Katherine Randolph had a long jump of 5.65m (18-6 1/2) for GSU. Transfer Breonca Reid jumped 5.81m indoors (19-6) at Bethune-Cookman.

Sophomore LaPorscha Wells is beginning to show her skills. In the indoor opener this year on Dec. 5, she set a school record in the weight throw with a distance of 17.26m (56-7 1/2). Wells set a school record outdoors as a freshman in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.72m (166-5), but was ninth in the outdoor Sun Belt championship in 48.61m (150-5).

High jumper Nylah Chavis cleared 5-6 multiple times in high school and started at GSU in December with a 5-5 indoor jump at Birmingham.

Senior Carresa Reeves started her final indoor season with the secondlongest indoor weight throw in school history of 15.92m (52-2 3/4).

A trio of freshmen have potential. Aubreya Smith measured 19-1 in high school, while Danielle Livingstone had 19-2 and Allyson Goff hit 18-4.

“The Birmingham CrossPlex is a state of the art facility and leads to good times and competition,” England said. “This is the second year that the Sun Belt is holding this at a neutral site, so that is good.”

Junior Sharonda Bryant transfers from Jackson State where she was the SWAC discus champion last year with 47.35m (155-4). Her best indoor shot put is 13.15m (43-1 3/4) and best outdoor was 12.84m (42-1 1/2). Her best indoor weight throw is 13.87m (45-6 1/4).

Coach England n Chris England was named program coordinator for both the Georgia State cross country and track and field teams in 2010 and has made the change from one conference to the next with strong teams. His teams have also excelled in the classrooms annually.

In his fifth season at Georgia State in 2015, Chris England serves as head coach for both the Panther cross country and track and field indoor and outdoor teams. He has brought consistency in competition, in the classroom and in the community to his teams. 2014 Cross Country Season Senior Hannah Stefanoff won the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championship race and was named the Sun Belt Cross Country Runner of the Year. She was GSU’s second champion in the last three years under England. The team ranked as high as No. 10 in the South Region during the regular season and the team won two meets.

2013-14 School Year Review During the 2013-14 school year, English saw a secondplace finish from the outdoor track and field team at the Sun Belt Championships, a fourth-place finish at the SBC Meet from cross country and a fifth-place finish at the SBC event from the indoor track and field team. The 2014 outdoor track and field team had three studentathletes qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries, three earn Sun Belt Runner-of-the-Week honors and four school set outdoor school records. The outdoor team had a conference champion and eight earn All-Sun Belt recognition by finishing in the top three. At the Sun Belt Championships, GSU’s 111 points included a dramatic 76 points on the final day of the three-day event. The 2014 indoor track and field team had eight studentathletes earn All-Sun Belt Conference honors with a pair of second-place finishes in the championship meet. The indoor team had a runner-of-the-week winner and set three school indoor records. The team rose from seventhplace to fifth-place at the Sun Belt Championship meet with 70 points.

Head Coach The 2013 cross country team was again ranked in the top 15 in the South Region and featured a pair of All-Sun Belt Conference runners. Ohio State Experience Before his stint at Murray State, England served as an assistant to the head cross country coach at his alma mater, Ohio State. In addition to working with numerous Big Ten champions and Olympic hopefuls, he served as meet manager for the Jesse Owens Classic and director for the Ohio State Cross Country Camp.

In 2012, England was the Sun Belt Coach of the Year after guiding the women’s cross country team to Sun Belt championship in the team’s inaugural appearance in the conference. Top runner Katharine Showalter was the Sun Belt individual champion and became the fourth GSU runner to ever compete in the NCAA Championship meet.

Wyoming and Boise State Experience

England came to Georgia State as head cross country coach in March 2010 after serving three seasons in the same role at Murray State. He was elevated to interim track and field coach during July 2011 and was promoted to the position permanently in 2012.

Student-Athlete Experience

In the first four seasons under his guidance, the Panther cross country teams have captured 13 conference runner of the week awards,eight All-CAA honors, one all-district distinction, the 2011 women’s CAA Rookie of the Year and the 2012 Sun Belt Runner of the Year. England revived the dormant GSU Cross Country Invitational in 2010 which is now held at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga. This was the same course where the Panthers hosted the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships. During his first season in charge of the track and field program, the women’s team took third place at the CAA meet, winning four individual titles and earning 11 All-CAA honors. The awards included Most Outstanding Track performer Tamara Moore, who finished first in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Murray State Experience England guided the Murray State women’s cross country program to second place at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009 — the program’s highest finish in nearly two decades. England’s distance runners helped Murray State to third-place showings at both the indoor and outdoor conference track and field championships in 2009. In 2009, England coached the OVC Athlete of the Year for both indoor and outdoor track in Katelyn Jones (indoor) and Taylor Crawford (outdoor). Crawford was additionally honored as the top female athlete at the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and both runners qualified for the 2009 NCAA regional. Jones was previously named OVC Freshman of the Year for indoor track in 2008.

England previously worked at Wyoming as a graduate assistant in the athletics department, and then at Boise State, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams.

While competing for the Buckeyes, England was a twotime All-American in 1997 in the indoor 5,000 and outdoor 10,000 meters and earned multiple All-Big Ten accolades. He still holds the Ohio State record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:43.42 and is second all-time in the 10,000 meters with a 29:01.29 and an indoor 5,000m of 13:58.94. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ohio State in 1997 and completed a master’s in geography at Murray State in 2009. Professional Running Experience After college, England ran professionally and trained fulltime for the Olympic Trials. As a professional runner, he was nationally ranked and competed in distances from the mile to the marathon in elite races all across the United States and around the world. In 2006, he won a USA Track & Field (USATF) national title. He has earned USATF Level II and Level I coaching certifications. Military Experience England served three years on active duty in the U.S. Army. During his military service, he competed on the All-Army cross country and track and field teams and was a member of the Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), representing the U.S. Armed Forces in competitions around the world. Personal A native of Springfield, Ohio, England and his wife Miriam have a son, Ewan, age 4, and a daugher, Nola, age 1.

Marlo Vinson Assistant Coach (Sprints, Hurdles, Relays, Horizontal Jumps) First Season Georgia Southern, 2004

Marlo Vinson joined the Georgia State staff in the fall of 2014 and will take the lead role in coaching sprints, hurdles, relays and horizontal jumps, while assisting in the overall operations for the track program. She is a former head coach at both Georgia Southern and Fort Valley State and a veteran of seven seasons as a track and field coach. As a student-athlete at Georgia Southern (2000-04), the former Marlo Mincey won six Southern Conference titles and was a 12-time All-SoCon honoree, while qualifying for the NCAA Regional and setting the SoCon record in the 400m hurdles. As a student-athlete at Georgia Southern, Vinson represented the Eagles in the NCAA outdoor regional from 2002-04 and held five combined school records, with three outdoor and two indoor marks at the time of her graduation. She finished her competitive career with six Southern Conference titles beside her name, including performances in the 400m hurdles and as a member of the Eagle 4x440m relay team that set SoCon records. The 12-time All-SoCon honoree earned her undergraduate degree in exercise science in 2004 and completed her master’s degree in sport management in 2007. As the head coach at Georgia Southern from 2012 through 2014, the Eagles saw Ebony Carter earn Most Outstanding Track Performer at the SoCon outdoor championships, while Jasmine Walker was named the Freshman-of-the-Year at the SoCon indoor championships. Walker later earned the Most Outstanding Track Performer in 2014.The Eagles set two school records during the indoor season and two school records in the outdoor campaign. Jasmine Billings’ 8.49 60m hurdle indoor time was second all-time in SoCon history. In 2014, the 4x100m relay team set a Southern Conference mark with a 44.50 time. Prior to taking the head position at Georgia Southern, Vinson spent two years at Georgetown as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. As the leader for the studentathletes who competed in sprints, hurdles, jumps and relays. Vinson helped guide the Hoyas to 20 school records, including Georgetown’s first NCAA qualifying team in the women’s 4x100m relay. Her 4x400m relay unit recorded the third-fastest time in school history and became the first national meet qualifier in a decade. 2015 Georgia State TRACK AND FIELD

The achievements of the Georgetown programs during the 200910 and 2010-11 seasons included the recognition of four indoor and one outdoor track and field All-Americans, 14 NCAA championship qualifiers (8 indoor, 6 outdoor), 19 NCAA regionals qualifiers and seven Big East champions. Her 400m student-athlete became the third individual in Hoya history with that distinction. A male sprinter set a Hoya mark in the 500m dash and a national record in that event for his native Great Britain. Vinson’s first head coaching job was with Fort Valley State in 2007-08 and 2008-09. She headed both the track and field and cross country teams for the Division II SIAC school. She helped 22 student-athletes qualify for the D-II national championship meet, with two competitors winning national titles in the men’s 200m and the women’s triple jump. Fort Valley had 19 All-American student-athletes under her guidance, while having two region Athlete of the Year winners and 29 SIAC champions. In those two seasons, the Wildcat track and field team broke 14 school records. Vinson was selected the SIAC Coach of the Year winner in 2009. She is USA Track and Field Level II combined event certified and completed the USTFCCCA program from sprint, hurdle and relay specialist education. Vinson hails from Hazlehurst, Ga., where she had been the 2000 high school state Class AA state champion in the 300m hurdles for the Yellowjackets of Jeff Davis High School. She is married to Terrance Vinson and the couple’s first child, Pilar Elisabeth, was born in January 26, 2015. Coaching Staff Ricardo Page Assistant Coach (Throws/Jumps/Multi) Second Season Southern Miss, 2008

Ricardo Page became a member of the Georgia State staff in 2014 and will assume the role of coaching the throwers and vertical jumpers, while assisting in the overall operations for the program. He is a seven-year veteran of collegiate coaching, coming to Georgia State from two years on the Jackson State staff. As a student-athlete at Southern Miss (2005-08), Page set a school record and was an All-Conference USA discus thrower. He had the second-longest shot put in USM history. Page, a Jamaica native, earned a bachelor’s degree in coaching education at Southern Miss and earned a master’s degree in health and physical education from Union College (Ky.).

For the past two seasons, Page tutored the SWAC champion discus thrower with Jackson State. In 2014, Page’s discus competitors took first, seventh, 11th and 13th among the 27 throwers. His shot putter earned second in the SWAC indoor championship and his high jumper finished 10th. At Union College, he coached three conference champions and an NAIA national qualifier in two seasons. Page was on the staff that secured the first women’s conference title in school history. He coached at Southern Miss as a volunteer assistant, helping tutor the C-USA 2009 indoor weight throw female champion and the male outdoor shot put champion. Page began his coaching career as a high school coach (Bridgeport) in his native Jamaica with two national champions and two Jamaican junior national qualifiers. He coached Raymond Brown and Camoi Hood, the 2005 CARIFTA champion and PANAM junior representative. As an athlete, he was the 2000 Jamaican high school 17 and under discus national champion and the record holder. He won silver and bronze medals in the Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships. In 2004, Page was the Jamaican senior national champion and took silver and bronze medals in 2005. He was a four-time Jamaican Intercollegiate champion in shot put and discus. He is a native of Spanish Town, in the St. Catherine parish near Kingston, Jamaica. The son of Cyril and Cyslin Page, he competed at G. C. Foster College before coming to USM. Page is married to Samarla and the couple has a son Keenan, born in the spring of 2014.

Volunteer Coach Jumps First Year at GSU

Volunteer Coach Short Sprints First Year at GSU Auburn

Jamaal Barnes was a sprinter at Auburn (2007). He clocked a best 100-meter time of 10.87 and a 200-meter top time of 22.43. As a member of Auburn’s 4x100m relay team, he qualified for the NCAA Regional with a best time of 40.57. That relay team finished fifth at the Penn Relays in 40.63. Barnes has been an assistant track and field coach and substitute teacher at Opelika (Ala.) High School since 2001. Barnes is a native of Altanta, graduating from Chamblee High School. In 2004, he was fifth in the 100 meters in the state championship meet in 11.07.

2015 PANTHERS

Carlos Morgan is a professional track and field athlete for his native Grand Cayman Islands, competing in the Commonwealth Games international event in August 2014. He competed as a student-athlete at Middle Tennessee State (2006-08). In addition to earning a bachelor’s degree from MTSU, Morgan earned a master’s in exercise science and health promotion in 2010 from that school. Morgan became a 2006 NAIA All-American at Lindsey Wilson College and was a national qualifier in 2005 and 2006, both indoor and outdoor. At MTSU, he was a NCAA qualifier in 2007, also both indoor and outdoor. His MTSU team won the Sun Belt championship in 2007 when he was second in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump.

TRACK AND FIELD GEORGIA STATE 2013-14 Improvement and success were measurable accomplishments for the 2014 track and field team in Georgia State’s second season in the Sun Belt Conference. The outdoor season saw Georgia State roll to a second-place finish at the Sun Belt Championships after the indoor season had seen the Panthers rise from seventh place to fifth. That outdoor finish netted GSU nine points in the Sun Belt’s Bubas Cup scoring and the indoor placing added six points for the Panthers. Individually, three athletes earned spots in the NCAA East Preliminaries after a year in 2013 when none had qualifying standards to reach that level. Eight athletes finished first, second or third at the championships to earn all-conference status in the Sun Belt Indoor Championships, then eight team members earned the all-conference level at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships. GSU had the Sun Belt Athlete of the Week winner four times: Niamh Kearney (indoors-Feb. 19), Tatiana Colbert (outdoors-March 17), Talia Colbert (outdoors-March 24), Niamh Kearney (outdoors-April 2). This year’s teams set four school records during the outdoor season, after having set three school marks in the indoor season. “Over six months of competition from December through May, the team dramatically improved,” head coach Chris England said. “Every year, the goal is to win championships or at least improve on the previous year’s results. I think these two teams can take pride in their performance in the classroom, in the community and in the athletic competition. Three athletes advanced to the NCAA East Preliminaries and one will represent us at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in July in Eugene, Oregon.”

INDOOR SEASON The second season in school history with an indoor track and field championship saw Georgia State rise from 31 points and seventh place in 2013 to 70 points and fifth place in 2014. From December through February, the team competed in six indoor meets, setting three school records and dozens of personal bests along the way. The indoor season started Dec. 6 in Birmingham with Niahm Kearney winning the 3,000-meter race in that 31-runner field. After the semester break and month competition break, GSU returned Jan. 10 at the UAB Invitational as Hannah Stefanoff won the 5,000m run to lead the Panthers. Emory played host to an 18-team meet in Birmingham on Jan. 26 and GSU finished first in the team scoring. Tatiana Colbert won the 200-meter race and long jump, while sprinter Ravin Gilbert won the 60m dash. Freshman Alysiah Whittaker added her first win in the shot put and Stefanoff repeated with a win in the 3,000m run to pace Georgia State. On Jan. 30, Anna Sinclair’s win in the 3,000-meter run led GSU in the Southern Miss Invitational. The Panthers had five seconds and four thirds in this meet. Samford played host in Birmingham for a Feb. 7-8 meet when Stefanoff had a personal-best in the 5,000m run to finish second of 27 runners and added a fourth-place finish in the 58-runner 3,000m run. Tatiana Colbert ran the fastest 400m time of the indoor season. Niamh Kearney set a school record in the mile run on Feb. 14 in the Cupid Classic in Birmingham, running a 4:54.47 to finish third of 50 runners. That fastest time of the Sun Belt season earned the junior from Ireland the Sun Belt Athlete-of-the-Week award. GSU finished fifth in the 10-team Sun Belt Indoor Championships in Birmingham with 70 points. Kearney earned all-conference honors with a second-place finish in the mile and Tatiana Colbert took home an allconference medal with a second-place finish in the 400-meter run. GSU set a school indoor record in the pentathlon and had a third-place finish. Talia Colbert’s third in the 400m earned her All-Sun Belt accolades. GSU’s 4x400 relay earned all-conference with a third-place finish. Whittaker set a school indoor record in the shot put with a fifth-place finish.

OUTDOOR SEASON The March 15 opener at the JSU Quad Meet was a perfect warm-up act for the seven-meet regular season as GSU took 14 first-place finishes of the 16 events it competed. Tatiana Colbert won the 100-meter dash, 200meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. That performance earned her Sun Belt Athlete of the Week. During Spring Break, GSU went to Tampa to train and run in the 16-team USF Bulls Invite. The work paid off as Georgia State produced five first-place finishes, four second and four thirds, while the team had 10 personal-best efforts. Tatiana Colbert’s 55.45 in the 400m was a winning personal-best time. In Atlanta at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on March 28-29, Kearney won the 1,500-meter run with 47 competitors. Stefanoff won the 5,000m run in the 28-runner field. The prestigious Florida Relays on April 4-5 offered GSU more challenges. Kearney ran a personal-best 4:26.64 in the 1,500-meter run, just one second off the school record. Showalter logged the second-fastest 3,000m steeplechase time in the school record book in finishing third of the 24 runners with a time that was among the 15 fastest in the East region for the season-to-date. Anna Sinclair had a season-best and personal-best sub-17-minute time in finishing sixth of the 45 runners in the 5,000m. At the 17th Blue Shoes Invitational at Furman on April 12, Georgia State notched nine first-place finishes. Tatiana Colbert’s 54.43 time in winning the 400-meter race was the third-fastest in school history and fastest in the Sun Belt season at that point. At the Auburn War Eagle meet on April 18, Alysiah Whittaker set a school record in the shot put with a 47-10 ½ throw (14.59m) as she finished fifth of 29. She would break that record later in the season. In the final regular-season meet on April 25-26 at Sun Belt-rival Troy, GSU had 11 first-place finishes. Whittaker broke her own shot put record with a 51-6 ¼ throw (15.70m) to post a distance that would qualify her for the NCAA East Preliminaries. Fellow freshman La Porscha Wells set a school mark in the hammer throw at 166-5 (50.72m). A third freshman, Kelsey Gray, set a school record in the javelin with a throw of 114-04 (34.85m).

Whittaker qualified to compete in the shot put in the Junior National Championships on July 5-6 in Eugene, Ore. This meet is for competitors at least 14 years of age and not yet 20 in 2014. Whittaker turned 19 in March. The 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships will serve as a qualifier for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships.

At the Sun Belt Conference Championships in San Marcos, Texas, Georgia State had a sensational third day to climb from sixth place to second. The Panthers scored 76 of their 111 total points on the final day, mostly in track events. The second-place finish with 111 points was superior to last year’s 57 points and fifth-place effort. If it were a track-only meet, GSU’s 103 points in the track portion were the most as winner Western Kentucky had 78 points in track. But the Hilltoppers scored 95 points in field events, while GSU scored eight in those competitions. Katharine Showalter was a conference champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior Carole Idolphine finished second in the 400m hurdles to earn All-Sun Belt Conference status. Tatiana Colbert was third in the 400m run and Showalter was third in the 1,500m event to both claim all-conference status. GSU’s 4x100 relay team (Tatiana Colbert, Wande Brewer, Katherine Randolph and Ravin Gilbert) were second to earn the all-conference recognition. The 4x400 relay team earned all-conference status by finishing third (Colbert twins, Brewer, Idolphine). Brewer set a school record in the 200m race, but finished fourth. Showalter scored 19 points in the conference championship to finish sixth overall. Brewer added 10.5 points and Stefanoff 10 points. Tatiana Colbert and Idolphine each had 9.5 points and Kearney added nine more points. NCAA EAST PRELIMINARIES (JACKSONVILLE, FLA.) Freshman Alysiah Whittaker, sophomore Ravin Gilbert and senior Katharine Showalter posted qualifying standards to move on to the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 29-31. Whittaker had the second-longest throw of her freshman season 49-08 ½ (15.15m) to place 29th of the 48 competitors. Gilbert’s 11.92 was well off her personal-best 11.59 as she finished 36th of the 48 in 11.92, just .11 from moving on to the next round. MARK P. BECKER Since beginning his tenure as Georgia State University’s seventh president in January 2009, President Mark P. Becker has led the institution through a dynamic period of major growth and advancement. Under his leadership, the university adopted a comprehensive 10-year strategic plan aimed at making Georgia State one of the nation’s premier urban research universities. With a 10 percent increase in graduation rates in the last five years, Georgia State is achieving its vision of becoming a national model for undergraduate education by demonstrating that students of all backgrounds can succeed at high rates. The university has been recognized by the Education Trust for eliminating disparities in graduation rates based on race or ethnicity. Diverse Issues in Higher Education places Georgia State No. 1 in the nation among non-profit institutions in graduating African-American students and in the top 50 universities for graduating AsianAmericans. Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine lists Georgia State as a top 100 university for graduating Hispanics, making the university one of only two non-Florida universities in the Southeast to attain this achievement. During Becker’s tenure Georgia State has set a series of university records for retention and graduation rates, as well as for the retention of the Georgia Lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship. This progress has been achieved as enrollment has grown from about 28,000 to more than 32,000 students, and the number of applications to the university has steadily risen and now exceeds 13,000. Private scholarship funding has increased significantly, and the university has more than doubled the number of students receiving support in the last two years. Research funding is at an all-time high, increasing nearly 15 percent in the last year alone. Federally sponsored research now accounts for 62 percent of the university’s research portfolio, an important barometer of the university’s research success. This growth has been aided by the Second Century Initiative, a faculty hiring program that has led to the development of new

interdisciplinary research centers. Seeking to position Georgia State students and researchers to thrive in an increasingly complex and global landscape, Becker has worked with faculty leaders to enhance Georgia State’s international profile. The university is working in five countries in which it is focusing its university-wide efforts: Brazil, China, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey. Through its campus development, Georgia State is a major contributor to the revitalization of downtown Atlanta. Building on the work of former President Carl V. Patton, the university has expanded campus housing and dining, research and academic facilities. Georgia State enhanced its research capacity with the opening of the Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center in 2009 and is designing and building a second research building on the same site. The university enlarged its instructional capacity with a classroom expansion project completed in 2011. Student housing has almost doubled with the addition of Patton Hall, a Greek townhome complex, and the Piedmont North housing and dining complex. The opening of the $10 million football practice facility enabled Georgia State to introduce its football program in fall 2010. The purchase of 3.5 acres of land on the eastern edge of the campus has made it possible for the university to have its first intramural recreation fields on its downtown campus. The Sun Trust tower complex at 25 Park Place houses major units of the College of Arts and Sciences and the expanded university advising center. The university has a new front door for visitors with the opening last year of Centennial Hall at 100 Auburn Ave. The building houses Georgia State’s Welcome Center, university administration and the recently established Honors College. A new Law School building is nearing completion, and the university has acquired 55 Park Place, a high-rise building that will be the new home of the Robinson

College of Business and the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Assuring that Georgia State is appropriately partnered in Atlanta and beyond, Becker serves on multiple civic, community and professional boards. Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet, are significant contributors to the university. They are focusing their philanthropy primarily on scholarships for students but also support the university’s Library, the Rialto Center for the Arts and Georgia State’s Women’s Philanthropy Initiative. Prior to his appointment as president of Georgia State, Becker was executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Before assuming that role, Becker spent three years at the University of Minnesota as a biostatistics professor, dean of the School of Public Health and assistant vice president of Public Health, Preparedness and Emergency Response. From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also has held academic appointments at the University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University. Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Towson State University in 1980, and his doctor’s degree in statistics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Towson State and Penn State have recognized him with distinguished alumnus awards. Becker grew up in Havre de Grace, Md., near Baltimore. He and his wife have two adult children, Matthew and Julia.

CHARLIE COBB WitH 16 YEARS COLLEGIATE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE, including the last nine years as the Director of Athletics at Appalachian State, Charlie Cobb will guide the rising Georgia State program at a crucial time. Georgia State University President Mark Becker ushered in a new era of Panther Athletics when he named veteran athletic administrator and “proven program builder” Charlie Cobb as Director of Athletics on Aug. 15, 2014. At Cobb’s introductory press conference, Becker noted the need for Georgia State to find a proven winner, someone who has built a winning program “the right way.” Becker said Cobb even took it a step further. “In fact, we got a bonus in this package. Not only is he a proven builder and proven winner with a track record of doing it in the right way, but he also has tremendous Atlanta roots,” Becker said. “He knows this community well, has worked in this city, knows what we are doing and the potential we have in this program.” The potential that Georgia State has shown was a significant draw for Cobb, and Becker saw a resume that was a perfect match to take the rising Panther Athletic Department to new levels. Since 2009, Georgia State has gone from not having a football program, to starting an FCS squad in 2010, to moving fulltime into the FBS and Sun Belt Conference in 2013 prior to Cobb’s arrival. Now, the next step awaits the Panthers, who won five conference titles in their first two years in the Sun Belt. With Cobb at the helm, they have set sights on growing their brand throughout Atlanta while becoming a perennial contender for the Bubas Cup, the league’s allsports trophy. Cobb came to Atlanta after spending nine years as Director of Athletics at Appalachian State. He prepared for the endeavor by serving seven years as a senior associate athletics director at NC State, his alma mater, and previously worked for six years in Atlanta. During those formative years, Cobb honed his business acumen with the At-

lanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. It was at those stops that he was instrumental in bringing the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) football championship, and the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) basketball championships to Atlanta. With his knowledge of Atlanta and experience in reshaping the image of a program, Cobb came to the Panthers at the perfect time with several significant athletic building projects on the horizon. High among the Panthers’ priorities are: a weight room and coaches offices at the football practice facility; a new basketball and volleyball practice facility; a dedicated academic performance center; and the University’s concept for taking over Turner Field to create a mixed-use area that also would house several Panther sports teams. Cobb has led successful programs by focusing on four pillars of his leadership philosophy: 1) relationships matter; 2) embrace the idea of achieving success; 3) be innovative; 4) create traditions. Those ideals helped him build and maintain a high-performing program at App State. The Mountaineers won three consecutive Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national championships, the first three-peat in the history, early in Cobb’s tenure. They also brought home eight consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships (top men’s sports program in the Southern Conference) and four Germann Cup championships (top women’s program). Together, they earned the men’s and women’s awards in the same academic year four times, an unprecedented achievement in the conference.

Cobb helped create $50 million in facilities improvements in his nine years at App State, primarily behind the success of the Mountaineers’ fundraising efforts that reached all-time highs. Among the fundraising highlights was surpassing the $3 million mark for the first time in 2012-13. The jewel of the construction projects was the seven-story Appalachian Athletics Center, which includes new football offices and locker rooms, training facilities, study areas, club-level seating and 18 luxury suites. The fundraising campaign also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball, softball and soccer, as well as a new indoor practice facility and renovations to the university’s Varsity Gym. The 46-year-old Cobb was a four-year letterwinner as a football player at NC State. A native of West Columbia, S.C., Cobb graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1990 and earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio in 1992. As a senior center, he was named to the All-ACC second team. He was an All-ACC academic selection and earned the Jim Tatum Award given to the ACC football senior with the highest grade-point average and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to a football player for integrity and sportsmanship. Cobb and his wife, Lindsay, have a son and daughter, 16-year-old Harrison and 13-year-old Branan. Lindsay Cobb was an All-ACC goalkeeper for the NC State women’s soccer team from 1988-90.

Georgia State’s commitment to academic support and student-athlete development is paying dividends as the Panthers Georgia State’s commitement to academic support are enjoying unprecedented success in the classroom. Georgia State’s Student-Athlete Development department became just the second in the nation to be certified at the highest level by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics. The Georgia State program has an 11-member academic support staff to take care of every student-athlete, with extra tutors or assitance available when needed.

SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM: • Panther athletic teams have combined for a cumulative department grade-point average of at least 3.0 for 13 consecutive semesters • The 3.12 cumulative grade-point average by all student-athletes in the fall of 2014 was the best semester GPA on record, and the third straight semester with at least a 3.05 • The track and field team posted a 3.07 team average in the fall of 2014, with 2 President’s Scholars and 10 Dean’s List honorees. • In the most recent release, Georgia State led all Sun Belt schools in Graduation Success Rate at 86 percent, above the national average of 81 percent • A total of 13 student-athletes across nine sports have earned academic All-America honors since 1989, including one who was the 2013 NCAA Elite 89 Award winner in men’s tennis

eorgia State University started its climb to the highest levels of college athletics in 2012 when it announced it would join the Sun Belt Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Panther athletic department became eligible to win championships in every league-sponsored sport and a year later was fully reclassified to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

The Panthers’ choice for a new home was a simple process considering the trajectory of the Sun Belt Conference. With its mantra “Together We Rise,” the league exemplifies what has become America’s most up-and-coming collegiate athletics conference. Founded in 1976, the Sun Belt has adapted and evolved in its nearly 40-year existence. The league was originally formed as a home for some of the nation’s premier mid-major basketball teams. With the demand for a higher national profile, the league began sponsoring football in 2001. The move into the group of football playing conferences has given the Sun Belt Conference a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors and today the league has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics. With the College Football Playoff included with the league’s other bowl arrangements, the Sun Belt Conference is tied to seven total bowl games. However, football is not the only sport that has seen recent success as all of the league’s sports have contributed to the “Rise” of the Sun Belt Conference. Georgia State put together one of the best performances in league history while winning the 2013-14 Sun Belt regularseason men’s basketball championship. Like women’s basketball, men’s teams earned three postseason bids in 2014. Baseball and softball also continue to be among the league’s standard-bearers for success. On the baseball diamond, the Sun Belt has sent up to four baseball teams to the NCAA tournament in a season, with UL Lafayette leading the way with a No. 1 national ranking in 2014. In softball, three teams have made the postseason, highlighted by the Ragin’ Cajuns who reached their sixth Women’s College World Series a year ago. Georgia State is looking to add to that success. So far, the Panthers have brought home league titles in women’s cross country (2012), men’s tennis (2013), men’s golf (2014) and women’s tennis (2014) in addition to the men’s basketball squad’s historic run. A total of 76 players earned All-Sun Belt recognition in the Panthers’ first two years back in the league.

ATHLETICS MASTER FACILITIES PLAN

n institution on the rise, Georgia State University has a tradition of progress that is reflected in its rising stature, growing campus and broadening influence. The Georgia State Athletics Master Facilities Plan is a blueprint for success and growth for GSU Athletics that will allow every Panther program to compete at the highest level. A new weight room for football and an academic learning center are already being planned. Georgia State University also has a concept to purchase Turner Field and convert it to mixed use, including athletic facilities. A centerpiece of the Athletics Master Plan is the transformation of the GSU Sports Arena (left), the home of Panther basketball and volleyball as well as the athletics offices.
