Georgia Southwestern State University Americus, Georgia Georgia Southwestern State University, a four-year unit of the University System of Georgia, was founded in 1906 as the Third Agricultural and Mechanical School. In 1926, the General Assembly granted a charter authorizing the school to offer two years of college work and to change its name to the Third District Agricultural and Normal College. The new charter resulted in the expansion of the curriculum to include courses in teacher training, and the State Department of Education gave teacher certification to students who completed the program. In 1932, by legislative enactment, this college and other statesupported institutions of higher learning in Georgia were organized into the University System of Georgia and placed under the jurisdiction of the Board of Regents. As a unit of the University System, the College continued its two-year curriculum and changed its name to Georgia Southwestern College. In 1964, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized Georgia Southwestern College to begin its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution. This action resulted in the development of baccalaureate programs, and the first bachelor’s degrees were conferred in June 1968. The name of the institution was changed to Georgia Southwestern State University in July of 1996. A program of graduate studies leading to the Master of Education degree was approved by the Board of Regents and initiated in June 1973. This program has undergone continuous growth and development, and the Specialist in Education degree was begun in the summer of 1982. The Master of Science in Administration was added in the winter of 1983. The Master of Science in Computer Science was added in the Spring of 1986, and the Master of Business Administration was added to the curriculum in 2003. Among distinguished GSW alumni are former President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Jimmy Carter, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, and former U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell.

Coaching Staff Mike Leeder Head Coach Sixth Season (67-80) Florida State University ‘92 Mike Leeder will enter his sixth year as the men’s head basketball coach at Georgia Southwestern State University during the 2011-12 season. The Hurricane program is coming off a memorable 2010-11 campaign that produced several firsts in school history, including: first NCAA Division II men’s basketball national ranking, first Peach Belt Conference division title in any sport, first NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in any sport, first Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and first NCAA All-American in any sport. GSW spent five weeks ranked in the Top 25, reaching as high as No. 16, and finished the season with a 20-9 record. Southwestern was well-represented on the Peach Belt All-Conference Teams, as well, with players on the First, Second and Third Teams. It’s a list of accomplishments that was recognized and respected by Leeder’s peers, as he was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to taking the reigns of the Hurricane program, Leeder served as the assistant men’s basketball coach for three seasons, helping GSW to 59 overall wins and an appearance in the 2003-04 NAIA National Championship Tournament in Kansas City, MO.
The Leeder File • Placed five players on PBC All-Conference teams while at GSW • Coached two Freshman of the Years • Has had players named PBC Player of the Week six times • Coached GSW’s first-ever All-American from any sport • Named 2010-11 Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year
Prior to arriving at Georgia Southwestern, Leeder was the head men’s basketball coach at Longwood University, located in Farmville, Virginia. In his four seasons at the helm he transformed the Longwood program into a National Top 10 team, and led the Lancers to the only conference championship in the schools’ history. He guided the nationally- ranked Lancers to the best NCAA Division II one-season turnaround during 2000-01 at +19 for an overall record of 23-8. That team advanced to the NCAA Division II East Regional Semi-Finals, and established 41 school records. Leeder is a former associate head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, and in 1998-99 he helped KWC to an overall record of 35-2, and the 1999 NCAA Division II National Championship. Prior to his one year at Kentucky Wesleyan, he founded and coached the inaugural men’s basketball team at NAIA Thomas (Ga.) University from 1995-98 while serving as the school’s athletic director. Leeder, a Coral Springs, Fla. native received his bachelor’s degree in history from Florida State University and earned a master’s degree in education from Nova Southeastern University. Leeder and his wife, Jodie, have two children Michael (14) and Alyssa (11). The Leeders reside in Ellaville.

The 2010-11 campaign saw a 13 win improvement, and it produced several firsts in school history, including: first NCAA Division II men’s basketball national ranking, first Peach Belt Conference division title in any sport, first NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in any sport. GSW spent five weeks ranked in the Top 25, reaching as high as No. 16, and finished the season with a 20-9 record. Cox was an assistant coach at Savannah State (2008-09) and Mercer (2007-08) prior to his arrival at Georgia Southwestern. His coaching career began at Santa Fe Community College as an assistant men’s basketball coach. The 2010-11 Season The 2010-2011 Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball season was one of many firsts. By season’s end, the program would achieve many historical firsts. Yet, the Peach Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll picked the Hurricanes to finish ninth in the conference, which included being picked fourth in the PBC West Division. Flash forward five months and GSW was having the last laugh. After a 3-1 start to the season, Georgia Southwestern was faced with a rare regular season matchup against a Division I opponent from a BCS Conference. The Hurricanes’ trip to Auburn figured to be a cakewalk for the Tigers. Auburn learned quickly that the matchup was anything but. They would lead GSW by only six points going into halftime, but would eventually breakdown the Hurricanes for the 28-point victory. Newcomer Phillip Brown contributed 14 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two assists in the effort. It was just one of many headlining nights for the Jonesboro, Georgia native. The Hurricanes responded to the loss at Auburn with their most pivotal stretch of the season. GSW would win twelve of their next 15 games. The dozen victories came at an impressive average margin of victory of just under 19 points. By the time that stretch of games ended in the beginning of February, Coach Leeder and company found themselves in uncharted waters; competing for a division title. The Blue & Gold seemed to run out of steam for the final month of the season. They would follow up the 12-3 stretch of the season with 4-3 record over their last seven regular season games. However as March began, Georgia Southwestern had qualified for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The Hurricanes drew the UNC Pembroke in the first round of the tournament. GSW handled the Braves during their only regular season matchup, which saw GSW win by 22 points. Yet, the slide going into the conference tournament should have been a sign. The Blue & Gold would drop a hard-fought, one point game. GSW would limp into the first round of the NCAA Division II, and they would be given a rare in-conference matchup at the tournament. The Hurricanes had beaten Montevallo twice during the regular season, but much like against Pembroke in the PBC Tournament, it didn’t matter. Georgia Southwestern would lose to the Falcons by three points. Despite the unsatisfactory end to the 2010-2011 season, the Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball team made it the most memorable five months in the program’s history. The 13 win improvement from the year before was just the tip of the iceberg. The 2010-2011 season included GSW’s first NCAA Division II men's basketball national ranking, first Peach Belt Conference division title in any sport, first NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in any sport, first Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and first NCAA All-American in any sport.
