GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY Americus, Georgia Georgia Southwestern State University, a four-year unit of the University System of Georgia, was founded in 1906 as the Third Agricultural and Mechanical School. In 1926, the General Assembly granted a charter authorizing the school to offer two years of college work and to change its name to the Third District Agricultural and Normal College. The new charter resulted in the expansion of the curriculum to include courses in teacher training, and the State Department of Education gave teacher certification to students who completed the program. In 1932, by legislative enactment, this college and other state-supported institutions of higher learning in Georgia were organized into the University System of Georgia and placed under the jurisdiction of the Board of Regents. As a unit of the University System, the College continued its two-year curriculum and changed its name to Georgia Southwestern College. In 1964, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized Georgia Southwestern College to begin its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution. This action resulted in the development of baccalaureate programs, and the first bachelor’s degrees were conferred in June 1968. The name of the institution was changed to Georgia Southwestern State University in July of 1996. A program of graduate studies leading to the Master of Education degree was approved by the Board of Regents and initiated in June 1973. This program has undergone continuous growth and development, and the Specialist in Education degree was begun in the summer of 1982. The Master of Science in Administration was added in the winter of 1983. The Master of Science in Computer Science was added in the Spring of 1986, and the Master of Business Administration was added to the curriculum in 2003. Among distinguished GSW alumni are former President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Jimmy Carter, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, and former U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell.

COACHING STAFF Mike Leeder Head Coach 10th Season (121-130) Florida State University ‘92 Mike Leeder enters his 10th year as the men’s head basketball coach at Georgia Southwestern State University.
THE LEEDER FILE
Leeder & Co. are coming off a 15-12 season where the Hurricanes earned the West Division’s third seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. GSW went 7-2 over its final nine regular season conference games to propel into the postseason for the fifth time in seven years. Deric Rudolph broke the school record for 3-pointers in a season and was the NCAA Division II leader in 3-pointers made per game. Darius Redding became GSW’s NCAA era all-time leader for assists in a season. The ‘Canes 2014-15 season ended in the PBC quarterfinals.
• Placed 10 players on PBC All-Conference teams while at GSW • Coached two PBC Freshmen of the Year • Has had players named PBC Player of the Week nine The Hurricanes made their second NCAA Division II National Tournament times appearance in 2013-14 and posted with their second 20+ win season in four • Coached GSW’s first-ever years finishing 20-11. GSW reached the semifinals of the PBC Tournament and All-American from any Alan Arnett (2nd team), Johathan Brooks (2nd team) and Daryl Davis (3rd team) earned PBC All-Conference honors. sport • Named 2010-11 Peach Belt GSW went 13-14 in 2012-13 and earned the West Division’s fourth seed in the Conference Coach of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. GSW rattled off a five-game conference winning streak in early February to propel into the postseason for the third time Year in five years and Arnett was named PBC Player of the Week during that stretch to give Leeder his seventh PBC POTW.
After opening the 2011-12 campaign at No. 18 in the preseason poll, GSW ascended to 12th in the country on November 29, which marks the highest ranking in program history. GSW started 6-0 and eventually ran its record to 11-3 before key injuries sidelined all momentum. All-American Phillip Brown was lost for the season on January 21 and by the season finale, GSW was missing four starters and five of the 13 players on its opening day roster. The Hurricanes finished the season with a record of 1214. The 2010-11 campaign was a memorable one, producing several firsts in school history, including: first NCAA Division II men’s basketball national ranking, first Peach Belt Conference division title in any sport, first NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in any sport, first Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and first NCAA All-American in any sport. GSW spent five weeks ranked in the Top 25, reaching as high as No. 16, and finished the season with a 20-9 record. Southwestern was wellrepresented on the Peach Belt All-Conference Teams, as well, with players on the First, Second and Third Teams. It’s a list of accomplishments that was recognized and respected by Leeder’s peers, as he was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to taking the reigns of the Hurricane program, Leeder served as the assistant men’s basketball coach for three seasons, helping GSW to 59 overall wins and an appearance in the 2003-04 NAIA National Championship Tournament in Kansas City, MO. Prior to arriving at Georgia Southwestern, Leeder was the head men’s basketball coach at Longwood University, located in Farmville, Virginia. In his four seasons at the helm he transformed the Longwood program into a National Top 10 team, and led the Lancers to the only conference championship in the schools’ history. He guided the nationally- ranked Lancers to the best NCAA Division II one-season turnaround during 2000-01 at +19 for an overall record of 23-8. That team advanced to the NCAA Division II East Regional Semi-Finals, and established 41 school records. Leeder is a former associate head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, and in 1998-99 he helped KWC to an overall record of 35-2, and the 1999 NCAA Division II National Championship. Prior to his one year at Kentucky Wesleyan, he founded and coached the inaugural men’s basketball team at NAIA Thomas (Ga.) University from 1995-98 while serving as the school’s athletic director.
