INSIDE THE EYE OF THE STORM The 2013-2014 academic year at Georgia Southwestern State University started its second semester this week. The Eye of the Storm will be your monthly source for all of the on-goings of the athletic department at GSW. Readers can briefly catch up on action that has already took place, look ahead at the month’s upcoming athletic events and get the inside scoop on everything the Hurricanes do.

NEW FACES FROM DIFFERENT PLACES

GSW men’s golf team experienced a slow fall season, after four of the top five golfers graduated in Spring 2013. The team hopes to improve during the upcoming spring season.

FALL 2013 IN REVIEW Men’s and Women’s Soccer have concluded their 2013 season. This was a building year for both teams as collectively five seniors graduated from the program. The men’s soccer team was acknowledged by the Peach Belt Conference as 2013 Team Sportsmanship Award Winners. This is the second straight year the men’s team has garnered the team sportsmanship award. The women’s soccer team was recently honored with the Silver Team Ethics Award cited by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Including these awards GSW has now won ten team sportsmanship awards. The baseball team held the 10th Annual Fall Classic Blue-White Baseball Series at Hurricane Stadium in late October at the traditional end of fall practice. As tradition stands, the losing team runs a car wash. This year the donations made at the car were given to Sumter County Parks and Recreation Little League Baseball Scholarship Program. GSW women’s cross country team hosted the PBC Championships for the first time in school history. The Hurricanes were third at the Pointe Invitational and fourth at the JSU Gem of the Hills. Jessi Young was the 2012 PBC Freshman of the Year, All-Academic, and this season

The men’s basketball team, as of January 8, 2014, was ranked No. 18 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II poll. The Hurricanes were ranked for the fifth straight week after entering the poll at No. 24 on Dec. 3. The Hurricanes current record is 12-3, 4-2 PBC. Senior Daryl Davis was named PBC men’s basketball Player of the Week during week 5 and senior Johathan Brooks is the current PBC POTW. The women’s basketball team is moving along at a steady pace. The Lady ‘Canes current record is 6-7, 1-5 PBC. Junior Shanedra Lockett is currently leading the Lady Hurricanes in scoring with a total of 189 points.
