February 2014 Volume 5, Issue 2 INSIDE THE EYE OF THE STORM The 2013-2014 academic year at Georgia Southwestern State University is about to start its second semester. The Eye of the Storm will be your monthly source for all of the on-goings of the athletic department at GSW. Readers can briefly catch up on action that has already took place, look ahead at the month’s upcoming athletic events and get the inside scoop on everything the Hurricanes do. DRIBBLIN’ TO THE HOOP HOOP The men’s basketball team spent five weeks ranked in the National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II poll. This is the second time in NCAA-era that GSW Men’s Hoops were ranked for five weeks. The Hurricanes current record is 16-5, 8-4 PBC. The Hurricanes had two seniors named Player of the Week. Daryl Davis and Johathan Brook were named such during week 5 and 9, respectively. Alan Arnett is ranked seventh in the PBC averaging 16.7 points per game and fourth with 351 overall points. Davis is ranked second in the PBC with a 59.9 field goal percentage. Brooks is leading the PBC with 52.9 three-point shooting percentage and 10.0 rebounds per game and a total of 211. HOT HANDS WOMEN’S HOOPS The women’s basketball team is moving along at a steady pace. The Lady ‘Canes current record is 8-11, 3-9 PBC. Junior Shanedra Lockett is currently leading the Lady Hurricanes in scoring with a total of 262 points, averaging 13.8 per game. Lockett is ranked eighth with a 104-213 Field Goal average. Another stand out for the women’s team is junior Shatoria Hudson. Who injured her hand against Armstrong and continues to battle with that pain and averaging 12.2 points per game. Jasmine McSwain is third in the PBC with 42 recorded steals and Danisha Green is ninth with 62 recorded assists, and fourth with 42 steals.

BASEBALL, SOFTBALL, TENNIS, and GOLF BEGIN! Baseball began their season on February 1st with a Win against Truett-McConnell College at the Valdosta State University Invitational. The Hurricanes have a 1-1 overall record. Lance Shelton is ranked third in the PBC with nine strikeouts. The Hurricanes stay on the road competing against Auburn Montgomery and West Alabama until the home opener on February 12 against Shorter University. Softball began their season on February 1st with a double header. against Queens University of Charlotte in the Bobcat Bash in Milledgeville, Ga. The tournament continued against West Alabama. They split both double-headers. Seniors Nellie Moore and Allison Pastor finished the weekend with a home run each. Ashley Cavender is tied for second in the PBC with 11 strikeouts. The Lady ‘Canes stay on the road with games against Albany State, Kentucky State, St. Augustine’s, Newberry College, and Virginia State until their home opener against Nova Southeaster on February 15th, this double header begins at 1:00 p.m. Men’s and Women’s Tennis start their seasons on February 7th at home against West Alabama. Men’s Golf is set to start things back up on February 10th at Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate hosted by Lincoln Memorial University and Wingate University. This is a two day tournament with three rounds taking place at Fleming Island Golf Club in Fleming Island, Fla. The golf team brings back all seven players from the fall season and an addition of Marc Owenson, a sophomore from Edinburgh, Scotland.
