Who we are The Richmond Fellowship Scotland has been providing care and support services in Scotland since 1992. We are all about people. We exist to help people live a happy and fulfilling life. We provide the support and care that people need to live the life they want. We see the person first, not a disability or a diagnosis. This means we have the flexible attitude to support all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. The Richmond Fellowship Scotland is a registered charity and a voluntary organisation. This means that we do not make a profit and are governed by a Management Committee, not shareholders. We provide support and care throughout Scotland; from the Highlands to the Borders, from Fife right through to Inverclyde. For a full map of where we work, please check our website at: www.trfs.org.uk.

Support staff Our support and care aims to transform people’s lives, into the best lives possible. We are person centred in everything we do. This means we listen to people and find out what is important to them. We want people to decide on and direct their own support. We look for our staff to share these values to make our aims a reality. We look for a combination of strong values, skills and experience in our staff. Experience of care and support work is not essential for all jobs as we value life and work experience highly too. Most of the people we support live in their own home in a local community, although we do provide some Registered Care Home services. We support people from the age of 16 right up to their 90’s.

Each person will have their own health and personal reasons for needing our support. Some may have mental health difficulties, learning disabilities or autism. Others may have a physical disability, sensory impairment or dementia. Some people may have come from a homeless background, have alcohol or drug issues, or have a forensic history. We support some people for just a few hours a week, right through to 24 hour support for others.

Support staff Support staff provide support and care to a specific number of people. Some of the support is quite practical; housework, shopping, cooking, dealing with money, bills and letters. Some people might want support to go out, find employment, go to college, be active or socialise. Others need help with to deal with medication, health problems or challenging behaviour. Support staff assist people to plan their support and keep records of their support visits.

Debbie Support Assistant, Glasgow
Staff snapshot “If you are thinking about working in care, don’t be daunted, or scared of the unknown. Talk to people to find out more. I have been working with The Richmond Fellowship Scotland for three years. I work in a supported living service for adults with mental health problems. In any one day I will support 3-4 different people in their own homes. To be a good Support Assistant you need to be a good listener and care about people. You need to treat everyone as an individual and realise that each person needs different support. I don’t do things for people. My job is to help people be more independent. You need to learn when to step in and help and when to step back and just support. I get a lot out of my job. If you think this might be for you, just go for it!" Management posts Senior Support Workers are responsible for the daily coordination of support to an agreed number of people. They will help plan and review support. They will mentor and supervise staff, and may be involved in some direct support. Team Managers usually manage a number of services across a small geographic area. They make sure support is of a high quality and that all staff are supported, supervised and trained. Area Managers usually manage a number of services across a larger geographic area. They provide strategic management and develop the service provision in their area. Head Office provides central support to all of our staff and services. The following teams are based there: • Directors • Finance • Human Resource and Payroll • Information, Communication and Technology Team

Graham Senior Support Worker, Fife
Staff snapshot “I think The Richmond Fellowship Scotland is an excellent organisation, we are really strong and have great values. My job has been a fantastic challenge; I am a Senior Support Worker in Glenrothes, Fife. I coordinate the work of our team and supervise staff. My work involves a lot of communication and meetings with social work and health agencies. Our team supports 32 people who live in their own homes, so I need to work closely with other Senior Support Workers and the Team Manager to make sure that the service runs smoothly. The opportunities have been here for me, I have had great training and been promoted to my current role. There is a future for me here and I would love to progress further. Graham King, Senior Support Worker, Fife
