It has been decided to combine the planned alumni parties in honor of Dr. Brittain and Colonel Van Leer into a large reception and dinner at the Piedmont Driving Club, in Atlanta; to begin at seven o'clock, on the night of Friday, July 7. Dr. Brittain will become President Emeritus, and Colonel Van Leer, President, respectively, of Georgia Tech on July 1, and the dinner will be a grand culmination of a week of induction ceremonies and other activities.

The dinner committee is composed of Baxter Maddox, '22, Chairman; Lawrence Willet, '18, and Judge F r a n k A. Hooper, Jr., '16.

Governor Arnall, Mayor Hartsfield, Ga. Tech Alumni, the Board of Regents, presidents of the branches of the University System and other members of their groups; educators in general, additional city, state and county officials, Georgia Tech faculty members, representatives from the student body and other friends will be among those invited for the occasion.

As the committee must limit the attendance, due to the present conditions with which all are familiar, it is suggested that reservations be made, now, through the Georgia Tech Alumni Office, Georgia Tech, Vernon 8540, for the dinner or with members of the reception committee. The plate cost has not been fixed as yet; however, it will be reasonable.

More detailed information will be sent through the mails and otherwise announced, of course, from time to time and until the date of the dinner; but be certain, though, to reserve the night of Friday, July 7, for the big party which all of you will surely want to attend.

Broad Research Facilities, Enlarged Graduate School Planned In an inspiring outline of the plans that he has in mind for the future development of Georgia Tech, Colonel Blake R. Van Leer assured t h e Board of Regents, at their April fourth meeting in Atlanta, that in addition to promoting undergraduate welfare and growth he would enlist the full co-operation of everyone for extensive research facilities and a greatly enlarged graduate school at the college.

Colonel Van Leer becomes president of Georgia Tech on J u l y 1, and it is quite evident that he expects to further these very vital objectives, as stated, promptly after his induction into office.

The press of the state and the nation heartily endorses Georgia Tech's progressive expansion plans, and it is a pleasure to quote in part from one of the. newspapers, the Atlanta Constitution, on the matter of research and graduate work as so well expressed in its editorial columns of April 5 on the subject, "Good News for Tech—and Georgia," as follows: "Southern universities woefully are short on good graduate schools. The entire University System will be strengthened by an expanded graduate school at Tech.

It is the research school, or department, which will meet probably the greatest economic need of the state in so far as development of the future is concerned.

Research and Graduate School—Cont'd. department, adequately financed, will mean a tremendous advance for all the state.

We earnestly request every large business in the state to communicate with the new president and the Board of Regents to see if it is possible financially to support the research department. If specific problems are presented for research, out of a company's own business, with Georgia raw materials such as clay, plastics, wood pulps, cotton or any other product, the sum appropriated is deductible for tax purposes.

It should be possible for the Board of Regents to work out a plan whereby Georgia's economic problems, growing out of what we produce and manufacture, may be financed through the research department.

In addition, the legislature should appropriate specifically and generously for such a department. Research is as great a need as the state has, and not to co-operate with the new plan will be the worst sort of pinch-penny folly.

We are happy to welcome Georgia Tech's new president and his plans which are so practical and of such enormous value to the state and to every person in it."

Colonel Van Leer, Regents, Faculty, Alumni, Plan Expansion Plans for t h e expansion of undergraduate work and extensive development of research and graduate facilities were outlined at length to t h e Board of Regents of t h e University System on May fourth by Colonel Blake R. Van Leer, president-elect of Georgia Tech, who was in Atlanta from May fourth to May seventh.

Chairman Marion Smith, it was stated, assured Colonel Van Leer that he would have the full cooperation of t h e Regents, following declarations of the president-elect that it would take time and a great amount of work and finances to attain t h e results in mind for Georgia Tech and Southern industry. The Board adopted a resolution approving graduate and research schools for Georgia Tech and other branches of t h e University System.

Pointing out that t h e South was definitely on t h e road up in scientific work and that Tech would necessarily require more than t h e past expenditures of from $247 to $287 for each student, in order to do t h e big job ahead, as like schools spend about $1,000 per student; and adding that these other foremost scientific institutions have found that it pays to spend whatever is needed in technical instruction, Colonel Van Leer left no doubt in t h e minds of the Regents that he proposed to help place Georgia Tech at t h e very top of t h e list among the technical colleges of the nation.

Also during t h e meeting and among other important financial business that was transacted, t h e Regents approved t h e sale of a business structure on Ivy Street, in Atlanta, for $60,000, the proceeds in full to be used entirely by Georgia Tech, it was announced. The building was willed to the college by the late Dr. Thomas P. Hinman.

A series of meetings and gatherings kept Colonel Van Leer busily engaged; and an enjoyable luncheon at t h e Capital City Club on May 4, presided over by President Cherry L. Emerson of t h e Georgia Tech National Alumni Association, was one of t h e highlights of the visit. Those attending t h e luncheon were officers and trustees of t h e organizations that are raising funds for t h e college and industrial research; composing t h e group were representatives from t h e Textile Education Foundation, executive board members of t h e Alumni Association, and trustees of t h e Georgia Tech Alumni Foundation.

The latter gentleman ably introduced Colonel Van Leer, a close friend of long standing.

The group held several committee meetings and then adjourned to the Georgia Tech campus, where large lay-out models of buildings and grounds, present and proposed, together with sketches and plans, prepared by the architectural department of t h e college, were shown by Professor Bush-Brown, head of the department, and by Dr. M. L. Brittain and Mr. C. L. Emerson.

The tour of the campus concluded with a highly interesting visit to the athletic department, its coaches, buildings, stands and grounds—as Colonel Van Leer is a firm believer in all branches of athletics; and his visit to t h e department added considerably to t h e important events of a memorable day.

Alumni Prominent In "E" Award Mills The company comprising t h e seven Avondale Mills, in Alabama, received t h e coveted star award in April; t h e star is to be placed on the present " E " Flag of t h e mills.

The Birmingham mill and t h e plant in Sylacauga have each received t h e National Security Award, also; and it is believed that the Birmingham plant is the first cotton mill to receive such an award. All of t h e Avondale mills have been awarded a star to go on their T Minute Man Flag for oversubscribing, in t h e Fourth War Bond Drive.

Direct Word From Cene Turner

General Alumni Mention

Gene Turner's many friends will be interested in reading his report letter of February 4, 1944, recently received, as follows: Dear Friends: How can one tell his friends what is on his daily schedule? Sometimes the day begins with a trip to the rose garden, and a visit to the hospital where Nurse No. 1 receives the floral offering with smiling appreciation. It may start with a visit to most any section of the camp where we have work, in hospitals, barracks and "day-room," but some time during the morning it is likely to terminate at the double buildings which house our activities and office.

It is often said here that the Chinese "Y" is the most attractive social center on the Post. The Chinese have a genius for transforming stark barrenness into colorful attractiveness.

More important than being attractive looking, there are activities which are used hard from nine in the morning to ten in the evening. There are all sorts of table games, both American and Chinese, newspapers and magazines, ping-pong, a gymnasium and outdoor courts for basketball, volley ball and tennis, as well as social halls and outdoor court for use w h e n there are overflow meetings. Then, throughout the camp it has been our task to organize and train in group games. In the rainy season, when there is sufficient water, we have some five hundred m e n each afternoon, teaching them to swim.

And now, believe it or not, we have a boxing ring at our center.

A small, but perhaps the most appreciated service we are offering now, is our library. After months of effort to secure Chinese books, a man was finally dispatched by transport plane with four sets of 200 books. We keep one of these sets here on loan and on each book loaned there is a ten to twenty rupee deposit, and we keep a second set for use in the building. Men sign for books and remain in the readingroom for their reading. The other two sets we have sent to our second center for similar use.

Our latest venture is an effort to teach handicrafts to patients in the convalescent hospital窶馬ew ground for us, but we seem to know as much about it as anyone else here, so we are trying to bring the need and the men together in one more realm.

Carrol B. Annis, B.S. in C.E., 1923, was presented with the A r m y Service Forces commendation for meritorious civilian service at ceremonies held on March 30, New Orleans Port of Embarkation, New Orleans, La. The commendation was signed by Lieut.

General Brehon B. Somervell. Mr. Annis is chief engineer and superintendent of construction for the Post Engineer at the New Orleans Port of Embarkation.

Edmond P. Cauldwell, B.S. in M.E., 1924, is mechanical superintendent of the Southeastern Pipe Line Co., 718 Forsyth Building, Atlanta.

James D'Arcy, Jr., B.S. Elec. Eng. Class of 1922, is the owner of the D'Arcy Electric Co., 313 Bona Allen Building, Atlanta.

H a r r y Ellerbe, Class 1924, former Atlantan, who became a Broadway actor, was in Atlanta during April en route to Hollywood for an extensive screen tryout with Warner Brothers.

Charles Hancock Graham, B.S. in E.E., 1923, is principal electrical engineer, Puerto Rico Water Resources Authority, San J u a n , Puerto Rico.

Edward B. Newill, M.E. 1915, formerly of Atlanta, manager of the Allison division of General Motors Corporation, Indianapolis, received the congratulations of General H. H. Arnold, chief of the A r m y Air Forces, and Lieut. General James H. Doolittle, commander of the Eighth A r m y Air Force, in recognition of his company's production of 50,000 plane motors since the war began.

In ceremonies attended by m a n y high military figures, Mr. Newill presented the 500,000th powerful liquid-cooled motor to Maj. Gen. J o h n F. Curry, commanding officer of the Western Technical Training Command of Denver, representing General Arnold.

Fred C. Pritchard, Class of 1924, formerly Yellow Jacket staff, Gold " T " scholastic award, is owner of Pritchard Bros., 433 Madison Ave., Memphis, Tenn.

William H. Ratliff, Jr., E.E. 1937, M.S. '39 M. I. T., is research engineer, Sperry Gyroscope Co., 35 Kenwood Road, Garden City, N. Y. Election of Charles Smithgall, B.S. in General Science, 1933, general manager of Radio Station WAGA, to the board of directors of the Fort Industry Company, owner and operator of the station, was announced recently following the annual meeting of stockholders at the home office in Toledo, O. Mr. Smithgall is president of the Blue Ridge Broadcasting Company, owner and operator of Radio Station WGGA, Gainesville. Formerly he had been connected with Radio Stations WGST, WSB and WATL, and had also been associated for a time with Burton E. Wyatt & Company, Atlanta advertising agency.

Leon P . Wilson, Jr., B.S. in Ch.E., 1938, is Captain, Pan American Airways, Miami, Fla. I. W. Summerlin, B.S. in M.E., 1916; M.E., 1928, is putting his engineering and contracting experience to valuable use in the services of the American Red Cross in the Mediterranean area. He took a leave of absence from his own company, the Carolina Engineering Co., in Durham, N. C , in February, 1944, to go with the Red Cross supply and warehouse division.

The news of the coming of " J i m " Hall was a shot in the arm which galvanized my whole system, and our structure in China, too. It was good news, indeed.

I shall meet him and arrange for him to come down here for a visit before he goes on to the main job in China. This job will probably hold me here for some time yet, but I rejoice in the strategy which is sending Jim on ahead that he may the more quickly get into the game there.

It would be a great pleasure to know that each of the friends who are sharing in this could be reminded personally that no days pass which do not bring them into review, both in m y thoughts and appreciation. One simply can not say his thoughts in the face of such action, confidence and friendship. So, some of you please say it for me, humbly, gratefully and with expression of affection to each of the friends who share and have shared so richly with me in the job which is not mine, but theirs and mine together.

W. H. Hightower, T. E. '09, Heads American Cotton Manufacturers' Association William Harrison Hightower, B.S. in T.E., 1909, president of the Thomaston Cotton Mills, Thomaston, Ga., was elected president of the American Cotton Manufacturers' Association at the closing session of the forty-eighth annual convention of the organization in Atlanta, Ga., on April twelfth. He succeeds Hugh M. Comer, executive vice-president of the Avondale Mills, Sylacauga, Ala. Other officers elected were: S. W. Cramer, president of the Cramerton (N. C.) Mills, first vice-president, and W. S. Montgomery, president of Spartan Mills, Spartanburg, S. C, second vice-president. W. M. McLaurine, Charlotte, N. C, was re-elected secretary and treasurer.

Mr. Hightower told the association in an address at the convention that the commonplace sheet, towel and pillowcase were among the textile products playing an important part in winning the war by keeping up fighting morale at the front.

Other speakers heard during the closing session included O. Max Gardner, Shelby, N. C, former governor of North Carolina and general counsel of the cotton textile industries; Mr. Comer and Nelson Aldrich, president of the Mississippi Farm Federation.

Earlier the meeting had heard War Production Board Chairman Donald M. Nelson.

Mr. Harrison Hightower has been a nationally prominent leader, practically since his graduation from Georgia Tech, where he stood out as a star member of the varsity football and baseball teams, president of the Tech Y. M. C. A., and otherwise foremost in campus activities. He only recently headed the Textile Education Foundation, as chairman, in raising a fund of $500,000 for the establish-

Tech 1942, of 1035 Star Park, Coronado, Calif., was recently in Atlanta on his way to an assignment at an Atlantic port from where he will later proceed to the launching of the U.S.S. Franklin B. Van Valkenburgh, a destroyer named in honor of his father, Captain F. B. Van Valkenburgh, U.S.N., 1909 Naval Academy graduate, who lost his life while commanding the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.

Greatest All-time Sport Achievement An Associated Press poll of 103 sports editors to find out what was the greatest sport achievement of all time, resulted in 97 points with 23 firsts for Lieut.

Col. Robert T. "Bob" Jones, M.E. 1922, "Grand Slam" golf champion of 1930, in the winning of both the United States and British Amateur and Open Golf Championships. Running second was Babe Ruth's pitching, fielding and homers with 39 points and 7 firsts. Bob Jones was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in March in England, where he is serving as an intelligence officer.

Tech Wrestlers Awarded Letters Six Georgia Tech wrestling champions were awarded letters for their stellar work by Head Coach W. A. Alexander at the April Navy Smoker in the Georgia Tech Naval Armory.

The mat bouts, only part of a fine program in the Tech auditorium, were preceded by an exhibition of wrestling holds, offensive and defensive, by Lieut.

L. A. Moll, of the Tech Naval personnel, and Bob Miller, Jacket coach.

Several hundred naval trainees were present at the smoker and in addition, three score or more officers and guests were seated along the gym floor, close to the ring.

Two interesting features of the program were a pep talk by Captain J. V. Babcock, commandant, and the more than noteworthy singing on the part of Chief Bosch Pritchard, master of ceremonies.

Wrestling results, the winner becoming school champion in his class and receiving a letter, were: T. A. Hart beat E. C. Drumright (135-pound class), R. E. Younger defeated R. L. McCelvey (145-pound class), R. D. McBurnett downed N. C. New (155pound class), H. S. Wilson beat White (165-pound class), C. R. Dixon triumphed over H. C. Woodsum (175-pound class), and in the unlimited class, E. C. Barbe defeated W. J. Broughton in one minute and seven seconds.

Cold Star Alumni Lieut. Charles Chalmers, Jr., 22, M.E. 1944, was killed in action in Italy on April 28, according to a telegram received from the War Department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chalmers, of 839 P e n n Avenue, N.E., Atlanta.

A graduate of Boys' High School, Lieut. Chalmers attended Georgia Tech, where he joined the S. A. E. fraternity. From there he entered the Army air forces and trained in this country for two years before being sent overseas. He was a Liberator bombardier in the A r m y Air Force, just before his death, serving as flight bombardier of his squadron.

Ensign Nicholas Hammond Savant, 20, son of D. P. Savant, dean of the Georgia Tech School of Engineering, and Mrs. Savant, was killed on May 13, 1944, in the crash of a training plane near Millington Naval Air Station, Memphis.

He was a flying instructor. A naval cadet in the plane with him was uninjured.

A graduate of Boys' High School, Ensign Savant attended Georgia Tech 1941-'42, and graduated from the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla.

He received his commission in February, 1943.

Lieut. George M. Sutton, B.S. in E.E., 1940, U. S. Army Air Corps, was killed in action over England on February 3, 1944.

First Lieut. Henry Herbert Wilson, 28, of Austell, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Wilson, 981 Underwood Avenue, S. E., Atlanta, has been reported killed in action on February 10, the date on which he was previously listed as missing.

The pilot of a Flying Fortress, he went down over Brunswick, Germany, on his twelfth mission.

He was graduated from Tech High School and attended Georgia Tech, 1940 Textile Class.

A foreman at Clark Thread Mill, Clarkdale, before entering the service in May, 1942, Lieut. Wilson went overseas in October, 1943. He held the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster.

Of widespread interest was the announcement of the marriage of Miss Louise Stuckey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Stuckey, to Winton Hilsman Smith, on February 23, in Atlanta.

Death Sidney A. Gayle, Sr., 49, of High Point, N. C , son of Mrs. William T. Gayle, Sr., 799 P e n n Avenue, Atlanta, died on March 30 in a hospital in Asheville, N. C. He had been ill several months.

Mr. Gayle attended Georgia Tech in the Class of 1916, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was president of the Alderman Photograph Company in High Point, N. C. Other survivors include his wife, two sons, officers in the armed forces, and three married sisters.

Sergeant John F. Bass, Jr., is being interned in Switzerland, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J o h n F. Bass, Sr., of Atlanta, have been informed.

Sergeant Bass attended Georgia Tech for two years.

Lieut. Sidney M. Burroughs, I.M., 1943, Atlanta, bombardier, who has been reported missing in action over Norway since November, has been awarded the Air Medal for "meritorious achievement," according to a notice received by his wife, Mrs. Annette P .

Burroughs, of Topeka, Kan. The son of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Burroughs, of 3170 Roxboro Road, Atlanta, Lieut. Burroughs received the award for "exceptionally meritorious achievement, while participating in five separate bomber combat missions over enemy-occupied continental Europe," the citation said.

First Lieut. Charles P. Lassiter, Jr., 20, Class of 1945, Marine fighter pilot, has been missing in action since February 12, w h e n he failed to r e t u r n from a mission against the enemy over Rabaul, New Britain, the Navy Department has informed his mother, Mrs. Charles P. Lassiter, Sr., 836 Westmont Road, S.W., Atlanta.

A graduate of Tech High School, Lieut. Lassiter attended Georgia Tech, and was enrolled in t h e Naval Preflight School at Athens in August, 1942.

Staff Sergeant Fair C. Lawrence, husband of Mrs. Winnie Shirley Lawrence, 229 Ponce de Leon Avenue, N.E., has been missing in action since his plane went down over Germany on March 6, the War Department has notified his wife.

Before entering the service in J a n u a r y , 1943, h e was employed by General Motors here. He is a native Atlantan and a graduate of Georgia Tech, in commerce, 1933.

Second Lieut. Warren Wright Lee, 24, grandson of Mrs. E. C. Wright, Decatur, has been reported missing in action after his plane was shot down between Hanover and Brunswick during a raid over Germany on March 9, the War Department has notified his family.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Lee, Savannah, the young officer, a navigator on a bomber, was seen to parachute out of the plane after it had burst into flames. His brother, First Lieut. Cater L. Lee, was on the same raid and wrote his parents that he saw Warren parachute out and was confident he had been taken prisoner.

A graduate of Armstrong Junior College in Savannah, the young navigator was attending Georgia Tech at the time he entered the service a year ago. He had been in combat five months and was on his fourteenth raid w h e n shot down. He has been awarded the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster.

Lieutenant Nunes, son of Mrs. Annie B. Nunes, 359 Sixth Street, N.E., Atlanta, was declared missing in action on J u n e 13, 1943, after an engagement on the Continent that has been described as one of the greatest air battles of the war. Twenty Fortresses failed to r e t u r n from the raid on enemy territory.

On March 30, the New York Georgia Tech Club held a large and interesting meeting. J o h n L. Davidson, M.E. and M.S., 1915, vice-president of the club, reported on the activities of the organization.

Joe E. Dillard, 1939, secretary of the Charleston, S. C , Georgia Tech Club, writes that their last meeting was held on F e b r u a r y 25 at Lance Hall. It was practically a business session alone; however, soft drinks and sandwiches, graciously prepared by Mrs. McDuffie, wife of the vice-president of the club, and pictures of Tech's Orange Bowl game, enlivened the meeting considerably.

"I'm not sure, but I think Lieut. Nunes' ship went down soon after we crossed the coast and met the first fighter attack. That was before we reached the target. I saw him only a few seconds, and he then was going down under control."

In a story on July 4, The Atlanta Journal reported Lieut. Nunes as missing, and quoted a letter from him to his mother, which did not mention his combat flying at all.

There are five Nunes children in the armed services, and a sixth, a son, is now trying to get into the Air Corps. The father, the late Tillou Von Nunes, prominent Atlanta attorney, was of German descent.

During the last war several of his children elected to drop the German prefix Von from their family name.

Mrs. Nunes has received no word from her pilot son, but she is still confident that he is safe, perhaps a prisoner in German hands.

First Lieut. John E. O'Neal, Jr., Class 1944, vicepresident Class '41-'42, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. O'Neal, 215 West Duffy Street, Atlanta, has been listed missing in action by the War Department, his parents were notified April 28.

Lieut. O'Neal, who was recently awarded the Airman's Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster, has been missing since April 13 over Germany, the War Department said.

The 21-year-old officer served as flight navigator of a Flying Fortress, and has been overseas since May, 1943. It was learned only recently by his parents t h a t h e had been promoted from second to first lieutenant last J a n u a r y .

Lieut. Thomas A. Parks, Jr., pilot of another "Ramblin' Wreck" Fortress shot down in a raid on Bremen last fall, has been reported a prisoner of war.

He attended Georgia Tech for three years before joining the Air Corps in December, 1941.

Lieut. Parks spent most of his youth in Atlanta.

Berry, U.S.N.R., B.S. in E.E., 1940, visited the alumni office in April upon his r e t u r n to the United States, after about two years' service in the Southwest Pacific on submarine patrol and convoy duty. He is being transferred to other duties after a short leave. Lieut. Berry's home is in Atlanta. He worked in the alumni office during his entire college years. His father graduated from Georgia Tech in 1910, C.E., b u t died while Lieut. Berry and another son w e r e quite young.

Captain Andrew R. Bergstrom, Marine Corps pilot, of Atlanta, had been in the South Pacific combat area less than two weeks w h e n he participated in two aerial combat assaults on the Japanese base at Rabaul, New Britain, according to a delayed Marine Corps dispatch from the Solomons.

As a pilot in the Marine Corps' first Mitchell medium bombing squadron, he found Rabaul practically devastated by previous Allied raids. He was among the airmen who helped add the finishing touches to the destruction of the base by dropping four tons of bombs.

Captain Bergstrom, a section leader of his squadron, flew his twin-engine bomber through J a p antiaircraft fire in both raids.

He has flown many important missions.

Lieut. George R. Irwin, '43, APO 446, Campbell, Ky. Capt. Emory L. Jenks, C.E. 1923, who left his desk as general agent of the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company 17 months ago to enter the Army, has received a 15-month leave of absence and has returned to his home in Atlanta. A former director of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, he was stationed with the Chemical Warfare Service at Camp Sibert, Ala. Lieut. Com. James K. Rankin, B.S. in Mech. Eng. '36, is assistant supervisor of shipbuilding in Brunswick, Ga.

Dean Spratlin, B.S. in M.E. 1939, is now a Lieutenant Commander, U.S.N.R., Submarine Service, and is doing an excellent job. Lieut. Com. Spratlin, 24 years of age, is one of the youngest naval officers ever to hold this rank.

Capt. Bruce W. Ravenel, B.S. in E.E. 1941, is with the army, overseas. He writes that he has seen Capt.

Lieut. Com. Ernest Rees, Jr., U.S.N.R., is executive officer on a destroyer in the Pacific. He graduated from Ga. Tech in 1938, B.S. in T.E. Lieut. Col. Wm. M. Robinson, B.S. in C.E. 1911, U. S. Army, of 505 Walker Street, Augusta, is in the Inspector General's Dept. Desert Training Center.

Ensign C. A. Roush, Jr., B.S. in Ch.E., 1943, is in training in the submarine service.

Lieut. Frederick Eugene Schroeder, B.S., Class 1940, is on active duty with the fleet in the Pacific area. Lieut. Schroeder is from Greenville, S. C , and went into service before Pearl Harbor. He has seen active duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific.

Lieut. George T. Sargent, 22-year-old son of the distinguished golf professional at East Lake, in Atlanta, has just completed the Army's primary flight training course at Thunderbird Field, Glendale, Ariz., and has commenced his basic flight training.

The Atlanta youngster, graduate of Boys' High and Georgia Tech, M.E. 1944, already has served at Camp Davis, Camp Haan and Santa Ana Air Base.

Lt. George N. Spring, U.S.N.R., C.E. 1938, of Atlanta, Ga., is executive officer on a destroyer escort.

He finished his Naval R.O.T.C. work while at Ga. Tech and has been on active duty for three years.

Georgia Tech's Naval Rifle Team Wins National Championship

Georgia Tech's Naval R.O.T.C. Rifle Team has again won the national championship in the annual William Randolph Hearst rifle competition. This makes the third time over a period of relatively recent years that the Georgia Tech riflemen have won the national honors; and they have always stood well to the fore in all of their meets.

Rear Admiral L. E. Denfield, acting chief of naval personnel, sent the following prized message to the victorious team: " 1 . The Chief of the Bureau congratulates the teams of the Georgia School of Technology, Northwestern University, and the University of Washington, for winning first, second, and third places, respectively, in this competition.

"2. The Chief of the Bureau also congratulates Mr. Samuel W . Mangham of the Naval R. O. T. C , Georgia School of Technology, for obtaining the highest individual score."

Competing against 80 other units in the nationwide contest, the Tech men scored 921 out of a possible 1,000 points to come out the winner.

Samuel W. Mangham, of Atlanta, with 198 out of a possible 200, won the individual crown in the meet.

Rear Admiral Denfield, acting chief of naval personnel, sent Mangham a congratulatory message as a result of his triumph, as stated above. This gives Tech the enviable honor of taking both the individual and team championships.

The members of the Tech team were: J. C. Mayson, J. J. Williamson, W. W. Coons, S. W. Mangham, R. H. Davis, M. A. Gowen, F. A. Baker, J. B. Gattey, W. A. Schmid, and S. R. Krysiak. Gowen, Baker, Gattey, Schmid, and Krysiak have already received their commissions and have left Tech for active duty with the Navy.

Coach Alexander has announced that he will award Georgia Tech letters to the members of the victorious team.

Tennis Team Wins Southeastern Conference Title By winning all of its scheduled conference games and, in fact, all meets entered to date, through stellar playing and decisive scores, Georgia Tech's masterful tennis team has easily won the 1944 Southeastern Conference tennis title.

Coached by Professor Earle Bortell, the team is composed of a brilliant array of tennis players with F r a n k Willett, number 1, Atlanta champion and conference star; Howard McCall, n u m b e r 2, exceptionally masterful, young Atlanta player; Carl Maddox, number 3, an outstanding Southern star; Dick Collier, number 4, a California luminary; J o h n n y Millsap, number 5, Florida ace; Ken Purtz, Richard Carlson, and Bob Cowen, each of whom is plenty good.

The squad met the best teams in the conference, but despite this tough opposition the Tech players won their meets handily, as shown in the following schedule: April 15, North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won by Georgia Tech, 9-0.

April 20, Auburn in Atlanta, rained out.

April 22, Duke in Atlanta; again, Tech 9-0.

April 29, Tulane at New Orleans, Tech 6-1.

May 4, Auburn at Auburn, Tech 7-0.

May 6, North Carolina in Atlanta, Tech won two matches; well ahead in third when rained out.

May 13, Duke at Durham, Tech 7-2.

Georgia Tech Track Team Wins S.E.C Championship Continuing on an undefeated march through its conference schedule, the Georgia Tech track team of 1944, coached by Norris Dean, won the Southeastern Conference track championship at Birmingham, Ala., May 20, with a total of 90 points, and the widest margin in the history of the meet. Louisiana State was second with 65; only once before in the S. E. C. meets has L. S. U. been dethroned, and that was several years ago by Georgia. No records were made but all events were plenty good. The team also added to its laurels by winning the S. E. Amateur Athletic Union track and field championships at Auburn, Ala., on May 13, making a somewhat one-sided score of 65 2/3 points; this more than doubled the 25 points made by Auburn, second place winners.

Harley Elebash, ex-Sewanee sprint star, is the team captain; and he is most ably supported by Ray Enders, Albert Hill, Billy Johnson, Serrie, Nelson, Duggans, Dykes, Gurry, Murdock, Caddy, Amirkhan,

Cook, Durst, Gideon, Hitz, Lyons, Ormond, Buttery, Schutz, Stone, Snider, Yates, on the track, Tom Carpenter, Baker, Hills, Prokop, Seligman, Prine, McMurray, Bennett, Dorough, Dunklin, Pickering, Vann, Williams, Jordan, Green, Folwell, Lehnhard, in the field events; and others.

The track schedule and results are: April 8. Tulane in Atlanta. Tech won 91 to 31.

April 22. Tulane in New Orleans. Tech, again, 84 to 27.

April 29. Sewanee in Atlanta. Tech, 115% to 15%.

May 6. North Carolina in Atlanta. Tech won 73 1/6 to 52 5/6.

May 13. Southeastern A. A. U. meet at Auburn.

Tech won 65 2/3; followed by Auburn, second, with 25 points.

May 19-20. Southeastern Conference meet at Birmingham, Ala. Won by Ga. Tech, 90 points.
