Georgia Tech's student publication, the "Technique," dedicated its issue of November 25, 1944, to Coach W. A. Alexander and, as the editorial of dedication typifies the high esteem in which Coach Alexander is held by his players, the students, alumni, faculty, fellow coaches and all, it is a sincere pleasure to endorse most heartily every word of the article and quote it in full, as follows: "It is difficult to write a worthy tribute to one who is held in such universal high regard as Coach Alexander. Facts concerning his record as a coach at Georgia Tech are well known. He entered Tech as a student in 1906, played scrub football in 1907, 1908 and 1909 and became student assistant coach in 1910.

In 1912 he became assistant football coach under John W. Heisman, and in 1920 was elevated to his present position as head coach. To him Tech students are indebted for one of the best all-round athletic programs in the nation. He tries to make available, activities and facilities to accommodate the needs of all Tech students, varsity and nonvarsity.

In his twenty-five seasons as varsity football coach at Georgia Tech, Coach Alexander has guided his teams to first place in the conference nine times, and is making his fifth trip to a Bowl game. He is the only coach in America who has played in all four major bowls.

He is a great coach—he is a greater man! His finer virtues are exemplified in his relationship with his players and fellow coaches. The New York World Telegram selected him as the Football Coach of the Year in 1942.

His players and fellow coaches consider him 'The Coach of the Era from 1920 to 1944,' and history will list him among the top coaches of all times.

Better still, his contemporaries know him as the Grand Old Man of Southern Football, a gentleman and a sportsman at all times.

It is to Coach Alexander, at the close of twentyfive years of mighty contributions to the game of football, that this issue of the Technique is dedicated."

Throughout his twenty-five years at Georgia Tech Coach "Alex" has had several annuals dedicated to him; and many other outstanding honors have been his so well merited lot. At its huge athletic dinner, last year, the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association presented Coach Alexander with an elaborate, antique, engraved silver bowl service, as a mark of high esteem and in appreciation of his great and invaluable service to Georgia Tech and to his fellow-man.

It's a privilege, indeed, to join in every fine salute to Coach Alexander.

Thanks Alumni Your many fine Christmas cards and kind wishes were greatly appreciated and we sincerely thank you for them; and, may we repeat, from our wishes to you in the December issue of the ALUMNUS "The Best of All Blessings to Each of You and to Those Dear to You; and withal, A Glorious and Happy Return Home to All in the Services,"

Plans and specifications for Tech's three newest post-war buildings have been approved by a committee of the Board of Regents for the 1945 development plan for Georgia Tech. The committee, composed of Regents Marion Smith, Frank Spratlin, and Rutherford L. Ellis, met with President Van Leer to authorize the projects.

The plans call for a new academic classroom building to be constructed at an estimated cost of $450,000; a textile building to be built at a cost of $425,000, and a radio communications building estimated at $65,000.

The academic classroom building will be located near the corner of Third and Cherry, while the other buildings will be placed according to Master Plan M-6, full details of which have not been released as yet.

Plans are being drawn up by Bush-Brown, Gailey, architects, and Paul M. Hefferman and Richard Aeck, associates, of the Georgia Tech architecture department.

Tech Chosen for Veteran Center Georgia Tech has the distinction of being the first college in the South to be selected by the U. S. Veterans' Administration for the establishment of a rehabilitation center, it was recently announced.

John M. Slaton, regional manager of the Veterans' Administration, informed President Blake R. Van Leer, of Georgia Tech, as to the official action.

The release from military service of Captain Joseph E. Moore, who holds a doctor's degree in psychology, has been requested in order that he may assume professional direction of the consultation phase of the new center's program.

President Van Leer also announced the installation of a comprehensive personnel program for discharged veterans. Discharged veterans who are found to have a vocational handicap will be eligible for a thorough-going, scientific consultation pointing toward the occupational retraining of those needing such rehabilitation.

Assisting Captain Moore will be J. F. Bugental, assistant professor of psychology, who was engaged in personnel work prior to joining the Tech faculty.

Miss Mary Virginia Bloxton and Miss Martha Crowe will serve as psychometrists. An advisement officer and two training officers, to be detailed from the Veterans Administration, will complete the staff.

Veterans whose pension ratings included a notation of the existence of a vocational handicap may apply to the Veterans Administration for the services to be offered by the new Charter.

These services will include a thorough interview with a psychologist, by which information about the man's training, experience, interests and desires will be brought out; administration of a series of psychological measures designed to investigate the aptitudes, skills, adjustment, and interests of the subject; consultation with training experts; and finally, if the need for it is established, induction into a course of training, either on-the-job or in an appropriate institution, designed to re-establish the veteran's employability.

Col. Van Leer pointed out that the veteran will at all times be allowed to make his own choice,

A recent article by Mr. R. B. Wilby, Ga. Tech '08, president Wilby-Kincey Service Corporation, has received considerable acclamation; and, in view of its interesting comment, permission was obtained to quote it in this publication in full as follows: FRONT PAGE COMMENT "Here is something rather remarkable, if not miraculous, about the production record of this nation of one hundred and thirty million population that has been made with perhaps twelve million of its most able and energetic people taken out of production for the more important business of fighting this war—or these two wars.

Not only has this country produced its own material for war, but it has furnished material to the hundred and eighty or so million people of Russia, the forty odd million people of England, the four hundred million of China and has thrown in no inconsiderable amount to India and to South America; and, at the same time, it is possible that the civilian population has had more than any other civilian population in the world.

Obviously, there must be a reason for this. And, for my part, I do not think the credit belongs to those who are claiming it so very loudly—the labor leaders, or even labor itself, and the political office holders and the heads of Government bureaus.

Rather it seems to me that the credit for this production goes to those who are never mentioned in connection with it—that is to the engineers; and in particular, to those who are called the production engineers.

After all, the making of an airplane has been subdivided into so many little parts that some woman has been taught in a few weeks to do one little detail while other women and unskilled men are taught to do others. The result has been that these little knacks have been coordinated and airplanes are turned out by people who have practically no mechanical skill; and ships have been built by them; and tanks; and barges; and most other war material.

It is because this overall job has been broken up into minute parts which can be done by the semiskilled that this production miracle has been brought about. For example, it is said that 80 percent of the personnel at the Bell Bomber plant near Atlanta is native labor; that almost half of it is female and a considerable part of it is colored, only a very small number of whom could be called mechanics by any stretch of the word.

But you hear nothing of these engineers, while the politicians, both in labor and in government, make so much noise!"

It may be well to note that Mr. Wilby is on a number of prominent business, civic, and Georgia Tech directorates; and his comments are always replete with experience, thought and observation.

Alumni Honor Tech Cold Star Heroes

Clint Castleberry, brilliant All-America freshman, was lost in action in the Mediterranean area and his jersey was accepted by Dr. M . L. Brittain from L. W . Robert, Jr., in commemoration ceremonies at the Georgia Tech Athletic Association Building on the afternoon of December 6, 1944.

Mr. C. C. Castleberry holds the football which was presented to Jimmy for the family by Coach Alexander of Tech for Coach R. L. (Shorty) Doyal and his 1944 Boys' High Southern Champions. The ball was used in the Boys' High-Lanier game, won by the former, and was inscribed: " I n Memory of Clint Castleberry, Our Greatest Athlete."

Prominent graduates, including many outstanding athletes, students, faculty members and other friends composed an impressive group that met on December sixth with Mr. C. C. Castleberry, Sr., and his son, Jimmy, varsity end, to honor the memory of Lieutenant "Clint" Castleberry and all other Georgia Tech Gold Star alumni.

In the brief, solemn ceremony, held in the Georgia Tech Athletic Building, it was announced that $4,079,100 in war bonds had been bought in tribute to "Clint" Castleberry as a symbol of all Tech men who have made the supreme sacrifice in the war.

Lieut. Castleberry was co-pilot of a B-26 bomber that crashed on November 7, in the Mediterranean area.

Dr. M. L. Brittain accepted the famed "19" sweater, worn by Castleberry during his brilliant oneyear career at Tech, from L. W. "Chip" Robert,

who made the highest bid for it during the first war loan campaign. The sweater will be included in Tech's permanent trophy collection.

Mr. Robert said Lt. Castleberry "is a great symbol of the type of young men who have gone out of Tech and an inspiration to all."

Clint's brother, Jimmy, was presented with the ball used in the recent victorious Boys' High-Lanier game, by Coach W. A. Alexander. It was inscribed "In Memory of Clint Castleberry, Our Greatest Athlete." Phil Tinsley, 1944 All-American, represented Tech students.

Hugh D. Carter, B.S. in M.E., 1923, is chairman of the Georgia Tech War Bond Football Memorial Committee which has been accepting war bond purchases and pledges as a memorial to all the men who have left the Tech campus, in the service of their country, and have made the supreme sacrifice.

Fraternity Alumni Council

Hotel Donates to Foundations

An important Georgia Tech Interfraternity Alumni Council organization meeting was held in the Yellow Room of the Capital City Club, Atlanta, at noon, December 20. Mr. Robert H. White, Jr., M.E., 1914, Alumni Board Chairman of the Interfraternity Committee, was host at an elaborate luncheon for the occasion.

There were twenty-two keenly interested representatives in attendance, among whom were: Col. B. R. Van Leer, President of Georgia Tech.

Mr. R. H. White presided and outlined the purpose of the meeting; he'stated that among the functions of the committee was its application to any current fraternity problems at Georgia Tech, and its service as a medium ^with Dean Floyd Field, or other college officials, and the various fraternity counselors. He added that its purpose was also to advise with the chapters and to get others of their respective alumni interested in their affairs and to request them to visit their fraternities about once a week.

The group, too, he thought, should act as a Pan Hellenic alumni body to co-ordinate objectives among the fraternity alumni, students and college.

Also, to work on the plan of fraternity owned chapter houses on State of Georgia property adjacent to Georgia Tech; and to adopt a highly cooperative policy in dealing with the fraternities as a whole.

It was also considered advisable, he suggested, for the directing body to meet quarterly, or as necessary, and later divide into smaller discussion groups; the counselors to follow up to see that their committees are functioning.

Colonel Van Leer gave an interesting talk on the relations between the fraternities and the college.

Dean Field went into the details and prospects and expressed his great pleasure over the plan which he has envisioned for years.

Mr. Emerson spoke on the very many advantages that would accrue both to the fraternities and the college: and offered the full cooperation of the Alumni Association to the Interfraternity Committee.

Mr. Joe Westbrook and others also commented most interestingly, and the whole group heartily approved the entire plan. A rising vote of thanks was extended to Mr. White, at the conclusion of the meeting.

During the latter part of December, the Piedmont Hotel of Atlanta, Ga., gave $1,000 each to the Georgia Tech Alumni Foundation, the University of Georgia Foundation, and to the Hoke Smith Memorial Foundation. The Hoke Smith fund was established to assist in educating 4-H Club and FFA members in Georgia.

These very fine donations will mean much to the educational welfare of Georgia and the South.

Enlarged Stands and New Buildings Enlargement plans now under way at Georgia Tech provide for more than doubling the acreage occupied by the college and will involve, it was stated, expenditures in new buildings, equipment and land that will approximately triple present investments.

The 1945 development program envisions a future enrollment of 4,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students.

While some details are subject to change, tentative plans for the enlargement of the west stands of Grant Field and the construction of a new physical education plant have already been approved by the Athletic Association.

Proposed changes in the west stands will increase the seating capacity by 8,000, and will make possible the addition of concession stands, new press boxes, and improved walkways for cameramen.

The most important structural change to give additional space will be an entire new set of seats which will be placed over the present ones, but at a more gradual slope. The new stands will extend 30 feet beyond the present front. An addition will be made at the back, too.

These changes will necessitate a shift of the playing field toward the east stands, and a revision of the track which will make it a perfect quarter-mile.

Also included in this $250,000 project is the replacement of the wooden stands joining the west and south stands by a concrete structure to make the stadium a continuous horseshoe.

The physical training building will probably be located on Rose Bowl field. It will have a permanent seating capacity of 6,000, two indoor tracks, three basketball courts, space for indoor tennis, student rallies and other events.

President Van Leer Honor Guest at New York Club Dinner Colonel Blake R. Van Leer was the honor guest at a dinner given by the New York Georgia Tech Club of New York City, at the University Club, on the night of December twelfth.

A number of prominent Atlanta alumni attended the dinner meeting; they included: C. L. Emerson, president of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association and Foundation Trustee; F. H. Neely. president of the Georgia Tech Alumni Foundation; Frank Spratlin, member of the State Board of Regents and Foundation trustee; George W. McCarty, trustee of the Alumni Foundation; R. B. Wilby. trustee of the Alumni Foundation and Athletic Board member.

Mr. George T. Marchmont, Foundation trustee of Dallas, Texas, was another prominent out of town alumnus present at the gathering.

James E. Davenport, vice president of the National Alumni Association and a Foundation trustee, entertained Colonel Van Leer and the visiting alumni at a luncheon, prior to the meeting, to introduce them to the officers and executive committee members of the New York alumni.

In an interesting letter of December 14, 1944, President John L. Davidson of the New York Club reported, as follows: "Mr. R. J. Thiesen, Executive Secretary Georgia Tech Alumni Association Georgia School of Technology Atlanta, Georgia "Dear Jack: "Our dinner meeting at the University Club on the night of December 12 was highly successful, and there were many expressions of approval after the meeting of the selection of Col. Blake R. Van Leer as the new President of Georgia Tech. He made a most favorable impression on everyone.

"I asked Charlie Sweet to introduce him, and I don't believe I could have made a better selection, because Charlie's introduction and Col. Van Leer's speech fitted perfectly.

"In addition to Col. Van Leer, we had short addresses by Frank Neely, Cherry Emerson, Frank Spratlin, George W. McCarty, and George T. Marchmont. Each of these men had very interesting and worthwhile messages which I believe will go a long way toward furthering the relations between our alumni group and the college.

"It was a great pleasure to greet Paul Yopp from Atlanta who happened to be in New York on business.

"At the suggestion of Col. Van Leer, a resolution was unanimously adopted providing for an annual meeting of our members during the week in which the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is in session. With Col. Van Leer as the guest of honor and with as many of the out of town alumni joining us as possible, we should have a large attendance.

I believe that in the early fall of 1945 this matter should be publicized through the alumni publication and through the Atlanta newspapers, so that. the Atlanta group and those from other cities who happen to be attending the Engineers' meeting can meet with us.

"At this time I want to extend to you the thanks

Alumnus 5-Star Company Director Mr. George W. Woodruff, Georgia Tech 1917, of Atlanta and Birmingham, is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Continental Gin Company which has been notified that its Birmingham plant has been awarded a fifth renewal of the Army-Navy "E" award for outstanding service in the production of war material.

The company received its first "E" award in October 1941, it was announced; and the present citation, together with four other stars that have been added since the original one, gives the Continental Gin Company the distinction of being one of the first plants in the nation to be awarded five stars.

Reunion Held in England Somewhere in England on November 25, a group of Georgia Tech and University of Georgia Alumni, together with all other available Georgians in the area, gathered for a most impressive and enjoyable get-together. The grand gathering was arranged by the distinguished service publication "Stars and Stripes," aided by the respective alumni officers of Tech and Georgia.

Captain Bruce Ravenel, B.S. in E.E., 1941, former alumni office assistant while at Tech and now somewhere in France, along with Captain R. C. Anderson, B.S. in E.E., 1940; First Lieut. Harold T. Gaymon, B.S. in M.E., 1940, and other alumni of both Tech and Georgia were active in the arrangements for the great meeting which was originally planned for last April, but was postponed for reasons unknown at the time but, perhaps, on account of the approach of D-Day. The Tech alumni office sent banners, pennants, songs and music, records and publications, as long ago as March for the reunion. Then, too, the Georgia Tech-Notre Dame game was broadcast on November 25; reports, however, stated that the group could not get the game over the radio.

First Lieut. Gaymont, who has been overseas for over 15 months, now a base ordnance officer, wrote that the reunion was a great success and that he never would have thought Tech and Georgia men would attend a joint reunion dinner; and added that it was great to yell across the table at each other and they were truly glad to be together.

Georgia Tech's Part in the War

Degrees for Service Students

(An excellent "Progress Report of Georgia Tech's Part in the War" was submitted, during the fall, to President Blake R. Van Leer and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, by Professor John A. Griffin who was then in the Department of Economics and Social Science at Georgia Tech, but is now a professor and assistant to the president at Emory University.

The report opens with quite an informative "Summary" which is printed for the real value and interest it should afford all alumni and other friends of Georgia Tech.)

TECH'S WAR PROGRAM SUMMARY "Beginning its war program before Pearl Harbor with training programs and research projects for national defense, the Georgia School of Technology has been able to make contributions to the war efforts in terms of manpower for the armed services, manpower for industry, research and testing, community service and leadership, and planning for the post-war period.

"Tech has been in a position to make a contribution to the war because of the following reasons: (1) the basic fact that the school is an engineering institution, (2) the presence of established Army and Navy facilities which meant that college training programs for the services could be readily installed, (3) strategic location in relation to war plants and Army and Navy installations, and (4) the qualifications of the men and women on the faculty and administrative staff.

"If the institution may call attention to its alumni and their service in this war, it should be pointed out that the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association estimates that eighty per cent of the alumni not in the services are actively engaged in war work. In part, it was the contribution of the alumni in the Army Ordnance Department which caused the school to be cited by the Ordnance Department and given the Ordnance Distinguished Service Award. Of the 3,000 alumni in the services, four have risen to the rank of admiral; seven are generals. Ninety-six have lost their lives.

"On the campus the first job has been training.

Army and Navy trainees have shared the facilities with men and women training for war work, civilian students, and prospective non-military pilots.

When the statistics for all the divergent training programs are brought together, the aggregate of those trained in one program or another totals approximately 17,500 persons. Details reveal 1,673 enlisted Army men and 1,771 Navy men trained at Tech. More than 4,000 were trained with federal funds in the Vocational Education for National Defense courses and 5,458 received college-level training under the program of Engineering, Science, and Management War Training. Under Civilian Pilot training, 742 men were enrolled. All of these educational efforts were made in addition to the institution's regular schedule of classes for civilian students, who numbered 2,835 at the time of Pearl Harbor. Since that time nearly 2,000 additional civilian students have registered, making a total of about 4,500 civilians who have actually been enrolled since December 7, 1941.

Two new degrees were,approved by the members of the faculty, at a general meeting during the latter part of 1944, when they made provisions for students who are called into the armed forces before graduation.

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Basic Engineering will be given to men who complete the Navy V-12 fully prescribed curricula. This degree will also be given to students in engineering courses who are called into the armed service if they have completed 140 hours, including all the work prescribed for their first three years, and have a general average of not less than 2.0.

For students who complete the Naval ROTC curriculum of seven semesters, there has been established the degree of Bachelor of Science in Naval Science.

A Bachelor of Science degree will be awarded also to students with a general average of 2.0, or better, in Industrial Management, Architecture and Textile Engineering, who are called into the armed services and have completed 140 hours, including all of their work for their first three years.

Basketball Season Starts Georgia Tech's basketball squad is fast rounding into form; and it faces a hard schedule which includes some of the top college teams in the South.

Notable among the additions are such teams as Kentucky, Tennessee, Tulane, and Auburn. Squads from these schools have always been among the best and will offer still keener competition in the SEC race this year.

Kentucky was the winner last year in the annual tournament held in Louisville. Tech was one of the favorites, going into this tournament, but suffered an upset at the hands of the Tulane five in the semifinals.

Leading the action so far in the practice sessions have been Collier, Holladay, McCall, Williams, and Stewart.

Brigadier General Haywood S. Hansell, B.S. in M.E., Ga. Tech, 1924, General Arnold's first chief of staff of an Army Bomber Force, was featured in an article by Sidney Shalett in the Saturday Evening Post of November 25. General Hansell is now in command of the B-29 operations in the Pacific and both he and his command have been the recipients of many news reports for their highly successful and courageous exploits.

An uncanny interest in aviation led General Hansell to enlist in the Air Corps in 1928 "just to learn something about planes." Today he is one of the leaders in the Army Air Forces.

He was General Arnold's right-hand man in organizing the superbombing show against Japan.

The magazine article revealed that, four months before Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt authorized General Arnold to draw up an air-war plan "so we wouldn't be caught short." Included in the group of officers detailed to draw up the plans was General Hansell.

General Hansell was a special observer for the AAF during the London blitz, then General Eisenhower's air-plans officer, commander of the 8th Air Force's First Bombardment Wing, and later deputy commander in chief of Allied Expeditionary Air Forces in the Mediterranean.

He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star for combat misions, the DFC, and the Air Medal.

Deaths Davis Private funeral services for John Topliff Davis, 51, of Biloxi, Miss., former Atlantian, who died on December 24, in a New Orleans hospital, were held in Atlanta at the graveside in West View Cemeitery, Dr. Richard Orme Flinn officiating.

Born in Elyria, Ohio, the son of the late Archibald Hunt and Susan Topliff Davis, Mr. Davis was a graduate of Georgia Tech in the class of 1914.

He served in the Navy during World War I and was later associated with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company.

He is survived by two brothers, Archibald H. Davis, Cleveland, Ohio, and Knowles Davis, Atlan. ta; two daughters, Margaret and Caroline Davis, Chicago, 111.

Stamy David Leslie Stamy, of 930 Myrtle Street, N. E., professor of mathematics at Georgia Tech for the past 32 years, died December 7 following several months of failing health.

Funeral services were held December 8 at Spring Hill, Atlanta, with Dr. John L. Yost officiating.

The body was taken to Greencastle, Pa., for burial in the family cemetery.

Having received degrees from the State Teacher's College, Shipensburg, Pa.; Ursinus College, Collegevijle, Pa., and the University of Chicago, Stamy previously taught in the public schools of Sykesville, Pa., and at Ursinus College. In September of 1912 he came to Atlanta as a professor at Tech. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Professor Stamy is survived by his wife; a daughter, Miss Mary Elizabeth Stamy, of Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Clara M. Venable, of Chambersburg, Pa., and a nephew, the Rev. Charles Leslie Venable, of Oak Park, 111.

Red Cross War Fund Keep your Red Cross at his side. Never was this more important than today. Long after swords have been beaten into plowshares the Red Cross will have much to do.

Even after the last gun has been fired many a month will pass before all our fighting men are home. Some will be confined in hospitals for long periods of recovery. Traditional Red Cross service for these men who have sacrificed so much must continue unabated. It is a sacred obligation delegated to your Red Cross.

No less sacred is the obligation to stand by with all necessary aid while veterans of this war, now being returned to civil life, adjust themselves to new conditions, prepare to take their rightful places in field and factory.

The welfare of the families of our men in uniform, their wives and children, their aged parents, must be guarded to see they do not suffer want in these trying times.

The refugees and waifs of war need help—help such as only the Red Cross is prepared to give in a war-scarred world.

Though the roar of guns may cease, human needs remain. The Red Cross can meet these only with your continued generous support. The President has designated March as Red Cross Month, the

Samuel Cheney McLendon, United States Naval Reserve, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McLendon, of Washington, Ga. The double ring ceremony was solemnized October 26 at 5:30 p. m. at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City.

Lieut. McLendon was awarded his B. S. Degree from Georgia Tech in February, 1943.

McCall - Tharpe Miss Sarah McCall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Frank McCall, of Moultrie, Ga., became the bride of Lieut. Commander Ernest Shaw Tharpe, on December 20, at the bride's home. Lieut Commander Tharpe graduated from Georgia Tech.

Shuck - Dorsey Sam E. Dorsey, B. S. in E. E., 1941, was married on March 17, 1944, to Miss Marjorie Shuck, in New York City. The couple is residing at 110-48 Merrick Road, Jamaica, N. Y. Sipfle - Hankinson Miss Marion Sipfle and T. W. Edmond Hankinson were married October 21, in Portsmouth, Va. Mr. Hankinson graduated from Georgia Tech in June, 1944, B. S. in M. EL, and is now with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Field.

Cold Star Alumni Lieutenant Robert. P. (Chick) Aldridge, 28, B-24 pilot, was killed in a plane crash in China, October 28, his wife, the former Miss Mary Ann Noland, 567 Linwood Avenue, N. E., has been informed by the War Department.

A 1938 graduate of Georgia Tech, Lieutenant Aldridge entered the Air Corps in 1942, and has seen active duty in China since last spring.

Lieutenant Aldridge for three consecutive years was Southeastern Conference champion in the two mile run, and was never defeated in an intercollegiate race. His conference two-mile record has never been beaten. He was one of the greatest track stars ever produced by Georgia Tech. At Tech. he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Besides his wife, survivors include his mother, Mrs. William Blank, of Long Island, N. Y.; his father, Robert G. Aldridge, of Florida; an aunt, Mrs. Marie G. Young, of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Harold Deckler, of New York City.

Capt. John Gilmore, Jr., I. M., 1940, 28, of the Army Air Corps troop carrying command stationed in India, died in action, November 18, his mother, Mrs. John Gilmore, of 66 Huntington Road, N. W., has been officially notified.

Besides Mrs. Gilmore, he is survived by his wife, of Greenville, S. C ; a sister, Mrs. Jack Hall, of Mississippi, and his grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Cundell.

A native of Atlanta, Capt. Gilmore was an employe of Sears-Roebuck after he graduated from Georgia Tech. He had been transferred to the Greenville, S. C. branch before entering the Army.

"Do not pray for my life, but pray that I shall accomplish my mission, whatever it may be, and play my part manfully.

"God willing, I shall be back home before much time is passed."

Staff Sergeant Howard A. Shoop, 20, of the Infantry, was killed in action in France, December 6, the War Department has informed his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Shoop, 3034 Howell Mill Road. N. W. A graduate of North Fulton High School, Sergeant Shoop attended Georgia Tech before entering service in March, 1943. He was stationed at Boston College, Mass., with the Army Specialized Training Program until his transfer last March to Fort Jackson, S. C. He went overseas in September.

Besides his mother, survivors include his grandmother, Mrs. M. Galling, of Atlanta, and an aunt, Mrs. Mary Hayes, of Stone Mountain.

Lt. Wesley Vernon Smith Jr., 26, pilot of a B-26 Marauder, was killed in action in France on October 8, his wife, the former Miss Mary Byrd Jones, of Jasper and Atlanta, has been advised by the War Department.

He was a pilot in the Ninth Air Forces, having received his training at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Ala. He left on July 25, 1944, for foreign duty and was killed the day following award of the Air Medal.

Lieut. Smith graduated in the class of 1938.

Besides his wife he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Vernon Smith Sr., of Hamlet, N. C , and one sister, Miss Sylvia Smith, of Hamlet.

Football Players Make All-America Teams

Captain Phil Tinsley

Players Given National Honors Captain Phil Tinsley and Frank Broyles gained major honors for their brilliant play at Tech this season, when selections for All-American teams were made. Tinsley was placed on Bill Stern's first team All-America and Broyles on the second.

Collier's magazine also named Tinsley on its AllAmerica first team. On the UP squad, Poole of Army edged Tinsley slightly to annex the top position.

On the All-SEC team, Tinsley and Broyles were big favorites in gaining the first team. The fine defensive and offensive play of Tinsley has been a feature of the Tech team the whole season and has been a big factor in its success. Broyles has also been a sparkplug for the Jackets, supplying the punch in the Engineers' attack.

Another Jacket regular to gain All-SEC honors was freshman Dinky Bowen, whose running and kicking have been responsible for many of Tech's victories. Also receiving honorable mention were three members of the Jacket forward wall, Furchgott, Holtsinger, and Phillips. Murdock and Duke got their share of praise when the AP cited them for their exceptional playing against Notre Dame.

Touchdown Club Honors Coach Alex and Broyles

As this issue of the ALUMNUS was on the press, the Atlanta Touchdown Club held another one of its memorable series of get-togethers and dinners over the week-end of January 19-20; and Frank Broyles was awarded the handsome trophy of the Club, at the brilliant Saturday night dinner, as the most valuable player to his team in the Southeastern Conference.

Tech 14, LSU 6 Georgia Tech won its sixth victory of the past football season on the night of November 18, by winning over the Bengal Tigers of L.S.U., 14-6, at Baton Rouge, La. Playing on a wet and soggy field, the Jackets were bogged down until the closing minutes of the first half. L.S.U. had scored in the first period on a blocked quick-kick to gain a 6-0 advantage.

Tech finally began to click with Broyles passing to Logan for a first down on the Tiger 10. Bowen moved it down to the six, and then Broyles heaved one to Mathews deep in the end zone for the score.

Bowen converted, and Tech led 7-6 at the half.

Throughout the third period the game wore on with neither team putting on a sustained drive. At the start of the fourth quarter L.S.U. made its only threat as is moved the ball to the Tech one before losing it on downs.

The Engineers came back in the final minutes to cinch the game with Broyles throwing his second touchdown pass to Mathews, this one on a sleeper play starting at the L.S.U. 40. Bowen added the conversion to make it 14-6 as the game ended.

Outstanding performer for LSU was Red Knight, whose fine kicking kept the Jackets back most of the night.

overseas. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four clusters and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Lt. Col. Percy H. Perkins, Georgia Tech '27, former Atlanta architect, was awarded the Bronze Star at a retreat parade and ceremony at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. The medal, presented by Brig.

General John L. Pierce, was the third Colonel Perkins has won, the others being the Purple Heart and the Moroccan Medal. He was cited for heroic achievement in action during his tour of duty in Italy. :[.,m First Lt. William H. Pinson, Jr., former Tech student, has been imprisoned for two years in the German prison camp Stalag Luft Three. He writes that there are some 25 Georgians in his particular camp.

S/Sgt. Andrew S. Russell, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Russell, Sr., 27 San Marco Ave., St. Augustine, Fla., has been awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of conspicuously meritorious and outstanding performance of military duty. The citation, which accompanied the award, mentions that his devotion and untiring effort have contributed materially to the success of the aerial offensive on the enemy.

Capt. Brooks Sheldon, Georgia Tech '41, son of Dr. Charles Sheldon, Jr., Atlanta, has been missing in action over Europe since October 29. Captain Sheldon had been piloting a B-24 Liberator since August, 1944.

Major Arthur E. Sotore, Jr., recently visited his parents after more than two years of service in the Mediterranean and European theaters. Major Sotore has flown more than 125 missions as pilot of A-36, P-40 and P-51 planes. He has been awarded the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Lt. Col. Oscar Thompson, Jr., Class of '36, and former football player, is commander of a battalion in France. He was the first American to. arrive in Africa. He fought through the African campaign and was given a citation for outstanding and especially meritorious service in Sedjenaue, Mateur, and Tunisia.

Major Joseph A. Thornton, B. S. in E. E., '34, recently was awarded the Bronze Star. Major Thornton planned and supervised the complete signal communications system in the Northern Ireland Base Section, effecting the plan so efficiently that voice and teletype were immediately available to all units. In addition, he planned, co-ordinated and supervised the successful operations of the General Headquarters Messengers Service, insuring prompt distribution of all official correspondence.

Lt. Col. Stonewall Jackson Warner, Jr., of the P.O.L. was officer in charge of getting gasoline and oil on hand in sufficient quantities on "D-Day" to be used in carrying the Allied troops forward. For his outstanding record, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service.

First Lt. Theron E. Wright, B. S. in Arch., '41, has been returned to the States for re-assignment after serving in the European theater. He flew 82 missions and won the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters.

Lt. (j. g.) Jack Adair, U.S.N.R., wrote from the Pacific area that he reads the alumni magazine with a great deal of interest. He stated that he and Lt. Comdr. Jack Glenn, now an assistant navigator on an important ship, had two very pleasant visits together; first on Adair's ship, then on Glenn's. He has also seen Cantrell Wells and had dinner sometime ago with Lt. Comdr. Ed Inman, 1934. Also saw Sam Colvin who came alongside his ship. Fairly recently one of the C.V.E.'s passed and a blinker message came over asking if Jack Adair were aboard and it was signed Lt. Comdr. Mack Tharpe.

Major L. J. Ball, B. S. T. E., '33, recently was home on leave after having served two years in North Africa.

Lt. Otis A. Barge, Jr., U.S.N.R. is stationed in Miami, awaiting a new assignment.

Lt. Ernest W. Bivans, B. S. in E. E., '43, is instructing and receiving training at Harvard University Cambridge, Mass.

First Lt. Sam Floyd, B. S. in E. E., '42, is pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt, in Belgium.

Ensign Haskew H. Brantley, Jr., graduated recently from the Naval Air Training.Bases, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Lt. Fred W. Bull, U.S.N.R., is stationed in Portland, Maine.

Capt." David E. Cavenaugh, of the Signal Corps, was recently retired on medical disability and at present. is on the technical staff of the Bell Laboratories in New York.

Lt. George Center, Navy Pilot, recently sank a Japanese aircraft tender in the Manila area.

Arlie Harris Chamberlin is a physician with the Armored Division, serving in the European Theater.

Major Charles L. Cudlipp is in the Ordnance Dept, stationed at Letterkenny Ordnance Depot, Chambersburg, Pa. Lt. E. F. Curry, B. S. in Ch. E., '43, is at the Ordnance B. D. School, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Captain James T. Davenport recently returned from 26 months' duty in the South Pacific theater of war, attached to the Old Horse Guard Unit. He is now located at Camp Stewart.

Lt. Comdr. Luther S. Drennon is serving as executive officer of the Naval Air Station at Hutchinson, Kansas. One of the youngest officers in the Navy to hold such an important post, the 27-year-old officer has had 11 years of preparation, beginning with hismembership in the Naval R.O.T.C. Unit at Georgia Tech.

Lt. Col. Ivey O. Drewry, Jr., Class of '39, is with an Armored Division somewhere in the European theater of operations.

Lt. Comdr. Jarrell A. Dunson, Jr., recently was home on furlough, awaiting a new submarine command of which he will be the executive officer.

Commander Dunson has been on active naval service, and in submarines, since the beginning of the war.

Lt. James M. Feagle, U.S.N.R., was recently through Atlanta on leave from 24 months in the Pacific and is now being transferred for further duty.

Capt. Wm. John Forsythe is somewhere in Germany with an Engineering Battalion. He has served a total of 33 months overseas.

On a recent mission over Yugoslavia, this fighter pilot had both wings sheared off his ship and the tail torn away and its entire body nearly crumpled with flak. Two 20-millimeter shells exploded directly behind his head, but armor plate saved him. The riddled ship made a crash landing on an emergency air strip.

Ensign Chester V. Link, U.S.N.R., is at the Naval Training Station, St. Paul Detail, Newport, R. I. Lt. Bruce Longino was at home in December, on furlough after almost a year of combat duty in the Pacific with the Navy's Fighting Squadron Eight.

Ensign Geo. R. Manning, U.S.N.R. B. S. in M. E., class of October, 1943, star football center and campus leader, is at sea in the Atlantic area.

Colonel Ben L. Mattingly is now in a G-3 section in France.

Georgia Tech 44, Georgia 0

Tech Defeated in Orange Bowl

Bounding back from their game with Notre Dame, Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets completely mastered the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Georgia, on Saturday, December 2, and won by the decisive score of 44-0.

The victory gave Georgia Tech the S.E.C. banner for the year, as the Jackets won all of its conference games; whereas, Alabama had lost to Georgia and Tennessee had tied with Alabama.

The score of the Tech-Georgia game was the third highest to be run up in the forty-game series, and broke the jinx that had held for 14 years over invading Tech teams at Stanford stadium.

Completely outclassed far in excess of all predictions, Georgia was smothered from the very start by a passing attack too sharp to be denied. Broyles and Ritter led the Tech offensive, connecting with clocklike precision to Mathews and Murdock. Dinky Bowen and the charging Jacket line supplied the ground attack which kept Georgia in its own territory most of the game.

The Engineers warmed up fast in the opening minutes and started a drive which carried over the Georgia goal, the score coming on a pass from Mathews to Murdock. The Bulldogs could do nothing with the ball and Tech started again with Broyles, Bowen, and Mathews on the loose. Broyles heaved a long one to Mathews for the second touch down, making it 13-0.

Going into the second quarter, Tech was still playing in Georgia territory almost entirely. Bowen broke through tackle to go to the 12, with Murdock taking it on the 2 on a pass from Ritter. Broyles punched the line, and it was Tech 20-Georgia 0.

The fourth touchdown of the first half came after Mathews made a magnificent catch on a pass from Broyles and went to the Georgia eight. Mathews scored a moment later on another pass from Broyles.

After the half the Engineers continued their rampage, scoring their fifth touchdown as Broyles plowed through the Georgia line. Georgia. began passing in desperation but poor receiving, an alert defense, and a rushing Jacket line brought their effort to naught.

Tech's two final scores came in the fourth quarter, the first on a pass from Broyles to Murdock, and the second on an interception by Nixon, who threaded his way 35 yards to score.

Determined to atone for the defeat they received from Georgia Tech in the Sugar Bowl game last year, a brilliant Golden Hurricane football team composed of many veterans from Tulsa University lived up to its great record and overpowered a courageous, hard playing, but less experienced Yellow Jacket varsity by a score of 26 to 12, in the Orange Bowl at Miami, Florida, on January first.

Georgia Tech would have probably made the score somewhat closer but its one man running game was all but nullified by the leg injury of its freshman star, Dinky Bowen, and neither the offense nor the defense could muster enough strength or strategy to overcome the Tulsa Hurricane; despite flashes of brilliance by the Yellow Jackets and a great 76 yard march for the final touchdown of the game.

Tulsa won the toss and chose to receive the opening kick-off which went out of bounds and the ball was put in play on their 35 yard line; from there the Golden Hurricane marched down the field in about ten well diversified plays to the first score of the game. Moss kicked the extra point and Tulsa was out in front, 7 to 0, where it stayed for the entire game.

On this opening touchdown drive, following a first down running attack, Moss threw the initial pass of the game; it was wide of his receiver, but, unfortunately, Tech batted the ball into the hands of an eligible receiver, Goodnight, who caught it at the 32 from where the Hurricane stormed on and to pass on a fourth down from the 10, Moss to Shedlosky, for the touchdown.

After the kickoff, the Jackets brought the ball back to its 22 yard line and on the next play there was a fumble that Tulsa recovered. The big team slowly plowed from there to the eight where Shedlosky scored on a hand-off, front Statue of Liberty, from Moss which caught Tech spread for a pass.

As the second quarter opened, the Engineers slowed down the Tulsa assaults and put on two air raids of their own. One carried them to Tulsa's 13, where a pass interception broke it up. The next one swept down to Tulsa's 23, where Charles Murdock tipped a toss from Broyles right into the hands of Smith, of Tulsa.

Then a Tulsa fumble was recovered by Roland Phillips on the 34 and luck seemed to have changed.

Broyles was groggy and tired. He was replaced by Tex Ritter. The Hurricane began rushing the passer, one chunk was ruled complete by interference on the 25, but when Ritter was caught on a fourth down pass, he was exactly where he took over, on Tulsa's 34.

Three touchdowns were made in the first five minutes of the third quarter; unfortunately for Georgia Tech, however, two of them went into Tulsa's columns.

Early in the explosive second half, Moss passed to end Clyde Goodnight who lateralled on a crisscross to end White at the 35 and the latter went on for a 65 yard touchdown run. Allen "Dinky" Bowen had White covered all the way but his injured leg slowed him down and he couldn't quite force the runner out of bounds.

Immediately following first down after the kickoff, Broyles ran to his right and threw a long pass over to the left sideline to Johnny Mcintosh who sped 51 yards to the goal. Bowen failed to convert for the extra point.

Camp Wilson of Tulsa fumbled the kickoff at his 10 and, with all caution thrown to the winds, the Jackets converged too sharply on him and the ball; with his flanks undefended and by headwork and luck, Wilson picked up the ball and tore down the field for 90 yards and goal. Again, and despite a game effort, the lame Bowen lacked the speed to catch Wilson or force him out of bounds, This finished Tulsa's scoring but, with the,extra point, they were safely out in front, 26 to 6.

Lt. Aubrey Strickland, veteran of three major amphibious attacks and commander of the first LST craft to return from the European war, recently visited in Atlanta for the first time in three years.

Lt. Austin C. Thies, U.S.N.R., B. S. in M. E., 1943, is aboard a destroyer in the Pacific. He has been made acting Chaplain on his ship. theless kept on fighting. Broyles passed the team down to Tulsa's 20, but Shedlosky grabbed a pass that Mathews juggled after catching it. Tulsa didn't get out from there, however, and Broyles soon sent a long one to Ray Enders for 51 yards to the 16; on an end-around Murdock fumbled and the performance started all over again. The -weary Broyles took a nice pass himself, to mix things up, and began bombing passes that stuck, which, with five and six yard plunging by young Rumsey Taylor, freshman fullback, carried the ball 76 yards in 14 plays to the goal; and it was Rumsey Taylor who bucked it over for Tech, the last touchdown of the game. Tinsley missed the point after and the score was 26-12 in favor of Tulsa. The game ended after the Hurricane ran one play, following the Tech kickoff.

With the loss to Tulsa, Georgia Tech now has a record of three wins and two losses in bowl games.
