with growing older is the final, positive discovery that time always manages to dim the agonies of life while heightening its pleasures.

Take the case of the old soldier—any combat man from any war. Get him talking about his war and three will get you 10 that he goes off into a recitation of offbeat anecdotes and completely glosses over the terror and hopelessness he felt when he was in combat.

So it is in one form or another with all of us. Even the bitterest blows eventually contain a touch of the sweet. If it were any other way, survival would be an even more doubtful thing than it is now.

Most of the year, we pretty much go along with A. E. Housman's "Luck's a chance but trouble's sure" philosophy.

But, at the end of each 1 2 months, it has become our custom to replay the small (to the rest of you) but important (to us) events of our own year. So, for now, here's the 1961-62 year, one last time:

A IT WAS the entire Tech student body reacting with a quiet, unimpressed "So what else is new" to the September integration when that wasn't the way most of them felt at all. It was Fred W. Ajax, caught in a political bind not of his own making magnificently standing up to angry members of the press as he tried to explain that they would not be allowed to come on the campus to cover the integration. The hooker being that just three days before this meeting, he had briefed the same people on the ground rules for press activity on campus while covering the same story. And, this too was done despite the personal feelings of the man.

It was an artist named lane Wallace running one of Atlanta's most unbelievably successful one-man art sales in her basement with all of the work done by another artist whose work she loved.

And, it was a daughter turned 14 with the bloom that only a first true love brings to her. And the final heartbreak that it brings to a father who is as selfish as all fathers anywhere when he suddenly realizes that he has lost forever a part of one of his loves.

It was a demon named Cristabel who in the mysterious Ancient-Mariner man-

ner of Siamese cats walked into the house in late July and owned the entire place by the first of August.

It was also New York in June. And all of the glory of renewed love it can bring you and your girl as you walk the crowded streets and sit in the theaters to watch the eight-times-a-week miracles unfold before eyes that never tire of the fantasy and truth of drama.

And, it was the determined courage of a mother who at an age when most others are heading for Florida to live on Social Security and pensions suddenly decides to quit her secure job and search for another one in the country's most brutal city. And three days later it was the same woman calling to say that she found another one at a better salary. At an age when medicare is usually the major issue in life, she has become to us the symbol of free enterprise and the dignity and determination of the human soul. * * * A IT WAS Bert Drucker and Mary Nell Santacroce fighting for a place for Drama Tech and finally winning and then turning around and putting on a production of "Look Homeward Angel" that would have done the best theater companies in the country proud. And, it was a series of personal letters from Fred Wolfe. BE '22, who has just enough of his brother Tom in him to make reading and rereading them a joy.

It was all of the Saturdays and Sundays of searching through the dusty catalogues and old books and yellowing letters during the research phases of a new history of Georgia Tech. And, it was the constant nagging fear that we could never do it as it deserved to be done.

It was the 1961 football team, a noble dedicated group of young men who even when they lost seemed bigger than their opponents. And it was Chick Graning's honestly Christian attitude to Darwin Holt after the incident in Birmingham and how ashamed it must have made all of the purported adults feel after the way we carried on about the affair.

It was Saturday night at the bridge table with Dick and Carol Inman and steaks for four. And, it was weekday 8:00 A.M.'s at the faculty lounge with Eskew, Beard, Tatum, Allen, Wohlford and a shocked Peter Sherry who never could quite adjust himself to the specTECH ALUMNUS

tacle of Wallace calmly strolling in with a Coca-Cola in his hand at that hour.

A IT ALSO WAS the friendship of people like Tonto Coleman and Tom Hall and the devotion to Tech of people like George Griffin and Fred Ajax. It was the enthusiasm of Joe Guthridge and the quiet, effective operation of Jamie Anthony's office.

It was 75th Anniversary Committee meetings in the office of Dorothy Crosland, the finest hostess anywhere near the campus.

It was the beauty that comes from the cameras of Bill Diehl and Bernie Wenke and the typewriter of Frank Bigger. And, it was the efficiency and dedication of Mary Jane Reynolds in a job that she has long ago grown tired of.

It was the dignity of Whack Hyder in a year when the banshees were beginning to howl for his scalp—a year in which he probably did the best coaching job of his career.

And it was the Thursday morning meeting of the "Naked City" addicts discussing the psychological ramifications of the previous night's show.

A IT WAS the utter tragedy of sudden death that removed forever friends of ours named Randy Fort, the best alumni magazine editor in the business; Dave Arnold, one of the finest, most-dedicated Tech alumni workers; and Hammond Hardin, an alumnus we met but once whose annual Christmas notes were a constant inspiration to us.

And, it was the shocking Sunday of June 3 when an Air France crash wiped out friends of almost everyone in Atlanta and plunged a city deep into mourning.

A IT WAS the beauty of the campus this spring, a tribute to Claude Petty and his often maligned physical plant department, a group of people who do their jobs with pride.

It was two young, and, from our vantage point, very small daughters leaping from an Olympic high board for the first time in their lives—an indication that the new generation has much more courage than their fathers.

It was all the letters of praise and condemnation that we received during the year concerning this magazine and the way we edit it. To the everlasting credit of Tech alumni none of you ever indicated we were doing less than our best. And for the coming year, this will be our pledge to the most loyal group of alumni, anywhere.

A T 7:45 A.M. on Saturday, June 9, the 1962 graduating class of the Georgia Institute of Technology began gathering in the dance studio above the Fox Theater for the annual commencement exercises. Thirty minutes later, longtime Alumnus photographer, Bob Bland, IM '62, (right) slipped his Leica from beneath his gown to take a final picture of his classmates. At that instant, Bill Diehl un-

loaded his own Leica to get this picture of one of his proteges catching an entire section of his class offguard.

h w to succeed in business by really trying I am delighted with the honor of being invited here today. Not only does it give me a chance to visit the beautiful city of Atlanta again, but a chance to explore the Tech campus and meet some of the faculty and the students.

I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the physical changes that have taken place since 1945. The old landmarks are still here—like Cloudman Dormitory where I lived, and the Tech tower—but modern architecture seems to have encompassed the rest of the campus. It reflects I think the spirit and the vigor of the new Tech, and I would like to congratulate Dr. Harrison and his faculty for the great progress that has been made here. And this progress extends well beyond the physical facilities.

The quality of the graduate program as well as research facilities have helped make Georgia Tech's name and reputation outstanding throughout the country.

Now let me get down to the business at hand, and frankly, I think I came here in the role of interloper. You members of the graduating class are here for only one clear-cut purpose. You want to receive the degrees for which you have labored so hard and long, or at least you have created the illusion of having labored so hard and long.

Your friends and parents are here for one very clear-cut purpose. To cheer you for receiving your degree. So while I pose a temporary obstacle in the path of your receipt of the degree, I can do something to make this intervention relatively a happy one—by being brief.

I would also like to propose another way which you members of the graduating class can add much joy to this occasion. And that's to be sure to congratulate your parents on their part in getting you here for this great day.

Many of your parents have made punishing sacrifices to get you where you are this morning. And virtually all of them have put up with and even loved and helped you at times along the way, when to put it bluntly, you have been unmitigated pains in the neck. So, they too, deserve congratulations on your success.

the hopes I could bring some words of advice to you starting out on your business careers that might make the path a bit easier. I don't know if I can— but I'll try.

First, let me sketch a bit the business setting you are about to enter. It's obvious that we are living in exciting times. Dangerous times, true, but a time when the world is full of challenge and opportunities. At probably no time in history are important and exciting events occurring with such rapidity.

The business world is equally as exciting. New ideas, innovations, and new products literally leap out upon us from all sides.

Let me give you an example of the speed at which things are being developed. I graduated from Tech in 1945 which isn't a long time ago, and I don't think of myself as an old fossil. But in 1945, we didn't have such things as jet planes, transistor radios, television in everyday use, food vending machines, miracle fibers, compact cars, electric canopeners, snow-throwers, electric typewriters, teaching machines, filtered cigarettes, or Polaroid films.

There were no 3-D movies or stereo phonograph sets or even long-playing records, and the twist was something that happened to your ankle if you stepped off the curb wrong.

We are now living in a world where science and technology seem to reign supreme, and the technological man is king. The demand for people with your kind of education seems inexhaustible.

First, there is the need by present industries to find new products, and better and cheaper ways of making things. McGraw-Hill estimates, for example, that one half of all the products you will buy in 1970 don't even exist today.

Then, there are the demands placed by burgeoning new industries. For example, in the next decade, it's estimated that the race to the moon will cost this country $20-billion, and bring into being a new aerospace industry which will need 1-million workers in 10 years and this includes 100,000 engineers and scientists.

It's estimated that to serve existing industry and new industries that this country needs 85 per cent continued on page 8

THE UNFINISHED SPEECH—continued more engineers and scientists than it had in 1959— and we won't get all we need. In many engineering colleges, enrollments are dwindling. That means for those who are in the field there will be great opportunities for you and at early ages.

There is a general shortage of brainpower in this country—especially bright engineers, and scientists, and management men. You are aware of it I'm sure. You can't help but notice the company recruiters on the campus promising you everything under the sun and they mean it. It seems the only new engineering offices now being built are in sunny Florida, California, or Arizona.

So, you couldn't come on the job market at a better time. You have the right kind of heads, bodies, minds, and training that will speed you toward economic success. You have the advantage of going to work in a period where jobs are hunting competent people, not to say outstanding people, rather than the reverse which was the case in times past.

So economic success is virtually assured for all of you. It is certain, too, that the tax laws during your lifetime will see to it that virtually none of you get notoriously rich.

The traits of

top-level

executives may surprise you

But suppose you still want to be at the top of the ladder and survey the world from an executive suite. You might be interested in the kinds of people who are up there at the pinnacle. I don't survey the world from this vantage point, but I've talked with hundreds of company presidents who have, and you might be interested to see what traits they have in common. \# First of all they are smart, but not the smartest people in their companies if you want to use I.Q. as a gauge.

Most of them have bachelors degrees, but again they are not the best educated in their companies.

They have drive and ambition and are willing to work long and hard. A 60-hour work-week is not uncommon for the highest-paid man in a company.

They have good judgment and self-confidence.

They tend to be doers rather than theorizers.

They spend most of their time trying to figure out what the problem is, rather than solving it. Once they can define the problem, they turn it over to the problem-solvers for the solution.

Most of them have the ability to work through people, or to stimulate their fellow workers on to better efforts.

Their energies are mainly concentrated on their jobs. Most other things are relegated to a secondary role.

They are willing to take chances, to operate in, and make decisions in areas of uncertainty.

They are not organization men and they don't like people who have stereotyped ideas and personalities. They don't like young people who spend their time keeping their noses clean, their jobs safe, and yessing them.

They don't want organization men to work for them. They want uncommon men.

So that's a quick profile of the men at the very top of the business pinnacle. Since you are just starting out—you may want to know some of the things you can do fairly early in your career that will help propel you to the top, or at least close to it.

First, rule completely out of your mind any thought that when you receive your diploma today, you're through with studying. That's sheer nonsense. The truth is that today you have just reached another plateau in your education, and you will have a lot more to reach. This is commencement time alright, but it means that you are commencing a new role, and you'll have plenty of additional educational hurdles to pass. Seventeen years ago when I received my sheepskin, I figured I wouldn't have to crack another textbook again. I thought I had it made. What a joke! I've gone to college 16 additional semesters since then, and it doesn't look like I'm close to being finished—and neither are you.

Remember scientific developments are moving so fast that what you learned today is obsolete tomorrow, and you have to learn new information.

Today, American corporations are spending $5billion to help make sure their employees keep abreast of developments in all fields. Why at many large companies, you can get your Master's or Ph.D. on company time. And thousands of other TECH ALUMNUS

scientists are paying their own way through college because they know they have to do it to keep abreast of their fields.

Do you realize that when I went to Tech, aeronautical engineering students knew only about propeller aircraft—they didn't know a thing about jet plane design—and if those students weren't willing to bone up on jets after they left college, they would have a hard time making a living. My chemistry books didn't include all the chemical elements they know about today. So the only way a chemical engineer could keep up on his field was to continue studying whether by going to school at night or on his own at home.

Since 1945, dozens of new specialties have developed that didn't exist before, jobs like plasma scientist, nose cone engineer, digital computer programmers, solid state circuitry engineer, reliability engineer, and space system engineer and scientists.

Management is changing just as rapidly. Look at how the impact of automation has changed management thinking and management education.

And, the architects and city planners have been affected just as much by the rapid change in our technology and the demand for new living concepts by our people. And there are going to be a great many new and exotic specialties in the years ahead—-specialties you may want to fill but can only do so if you keep abreast of your field.

So don't think your education is over. It will never be.

A second idea I want to suggest to you sounds so simple and trite as to be absurd, but let me tell you anyway. Work hard. Hard work channeled in the right direction is almost an unbeatable combination. I can recount dozens of stories about people who moved up the ladder because of this.

All things being equal, the person who works one or two more hours a day, constructively of course, will get ahead faster than his co-worker who doesn't.

The reason is simple. One more hour every day, calculated on a 40-hour work-week means the person is putting in 12 per cent more time on the job than the next person. Putting in this extra time means he can do more work, or do a given job better, or he can be learning additional materials, or getting more experience.

And when you are just starting out on a job, JULY, 1962

don't worry about putting in long hours. They will accelerate your career in the same way that compound interest multiplies a savings account.

Let me give you an example from my own rather limited experience. My first job was as a cub reporter on the Greensboro Daily News in North Carolina. The hours were four in the afternoon to one in the morning. My assignment was to write obituaries and to cover police and fire news as it occurred. Generally, nine at night to one in the morning was a pretty dead time. My colleagues used to spend the time playing cards or reading papers. I did this for a while until I hit on a different plan. I asked the book review editor if I could review books, and he said yes. So I spent the slow hours first reading books, then writing reviews.

Pretty soon, I was reviewing a couple of books a week and was running out of shelf space for my blossoming collection.

Next, I decided to try my hand at feature writing.

The only problem was that no matter how I pleaded, the city editor didn't feel I should put my time on such articles. So I decided I was going to write them anyway. I developed story ideas, did my interviewing on my own time in the mornings, then wrote the stories on the 9 to 1 shift. Since no one was in a rush for them—and for that matter no one knew I was even writing them—I would polish them hour after hour, writing five or six drafts with loving care. I took them to the feature editor, he liked them, and pretty soon I was a feature writer.

The interviews on my own time had given me the necessary reporting experience; the loving polish gave me additional writing experience. The moral of this story is don't watch the clock; it often gets in the way of opportunity. Clockwatchers generally end up waiting for time to pass, rather than putting time to use.

Another pointer I would like to offer you consists of just two words—THINK BIG! Set big goals.

If you want to marry the prettiest girl in Atlanta, fine. If you want to be president of Coca-Cola, or president of Georgia Tech, or an admiral in the Navy, or a Nobel Prize winner, or a Congressman, fine. Work toward such goals. It's true you may never reach them, but you'll be surprised how far you will go—and what's more, some of you will reach them.

THE UNFINISHED SPEECH—continued But remember there's a corollary to thinking big.

Think big, but chew off your goal in small bites. It's amazing what you can do if you take a big task and accomplish it bit by bit.

Let me give you a couple more parables to illustrate these points: In the 1924 edition of the Blue Print under the picture of a man now sitting on this stage were these prophetic words, "Ambition: to be president of the Cotton-pickers." Now, I am sure that these words were written half in jest, but the man, himself, obviously believed them. For, today that man, John Baum, is vice president of one of the country's largest textile corporations. And in a few minutes he will receive the Alumni Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor that Georgia Tech can bestow on anyone. Before he is through with business life, John Baum may well reach that ambitious goal set for him when he was in your place.

Another man I know very well used this same technique—set the big goal and' bite it off in small pieces—in working toward advanced degrees. He started in 1956, going to school two nights a week, four hours a night, three semesters a year. By 1959, he had his M.B.A. and by this past year, his course work for a doctorate was completed, and today he stands just a few requirements away from that doctorate. And you know what, I'm pretty sure that I didn't miss all of those nights I spent in school.

Let me suggest another pointer you might keep in mind, too. Don't be too worried if you try something and fail at it. And don't try to plan your life in an effort to be a continual howling success. The man or woman who will never fail in life is probably dreaming pretty puny dreams.

What you really want to do in life it seems to me is to take calculated chances. You'll find that most of the time when you do something rather than not do it, you have come out ahead. But even if you fail, remember it is better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all. Think of it in terms of a batting average. A batter who has a .300 batting average is considered pretty good. But remember a .300 hitter fails to get a hit in seven out of ten tries at bat. Yet that doesn't make him anything like a failure. But if you don't get up and swing at 10

the ball, you're absolutely guaranteed to get a .000 average.

Now let me say a word about responsibility. It's an important concept. In the business world, there are two basic ways to get ahead. One is to do superlative work on the job you have; the other way is to take on additional responsibilities. I've been in business 15 years now and still I'm amazed at the fact that these basics haven't sunk into the minds of otherwise bright people.

Yet it works out very simply in practice. I had a secretary once on Business Week who asked me how she could really get a sizable raise. I told her the only way would be to move out of the secretary's classification, and the only way she could do that would be to take on new responsibilities. She said "Fine, and what new responsibilities would t give her?" I made some suggestions, she took me up on them, and today she is an associate editor of the magazine and making three times as much money as she did as a secretary.

The shortest path to success is to become a top man in a specialty

There are two other things I would like to mention before my time runs out. I've discussed in general terms how you can get ahead on your job.

But what if you are not going to be satisfied with a modicum of material success. Suppose you want to be famous, or have a yen to tidy up the world a bit. Or want to lead a very interesting life which it seems to me about 90 per cent of us do not succeed in doing.

In ranging over this array of possibilities, I have come up with only one formula which I can certify as sure-fire. If you have a hankering for fame, I am confident that the surest way to get it is to specialize intensively. A very famous man put it this way: "If you are not a genius—and probably few of us here belong in this class—and if nevertheless you thirst for fame, stick to one thing and learn to do it superlatively well. Select a narrow specialty, if it is only the left hind leg of bees. Learn more about it than anyone else alive and become an authority on the subject. Then you will have fame of a sort."

tively easy to make a mark as a specialist. And I suspect it's relatively easy on the head, too."

My advice is to concentrate on becoming a top man by synthesizing

But now if instead of courting fame exclusively, you want to be an effective leader of your fellow men and women, I have a suggestion about how to do this too. In a way, it was phrased vividly for me by the president of a large corporation who asked me: "Why is it that most of my very bright boys are so short on personal charm, and most of my personality boys are not particularly bright?"

I don't know the answer to this question, but perhaps some great law of compensation is mysteriously at work to prevent the bright people from inheriting the world too fast. However, I do recognize the state of affairs that prompted the question, and it impels me to make the observation that if those of you who are very bright intellectually should take to being equally bright in leadership qualities, you would soon be having all the rest of us happily following you around.

Now, on the other hand, if you aspire to do the most constructive thing possible in the general field of operations you select for yourself, I have an idea about that too. And it has the added advantage of providing you with the possibility of an extraordinarily interesting life.

In this event, you will devote your excess energies to somewhat the reverse of the extreme specializations which I advanced as the surest road to fame. You will apply yourself to seeing and understanding, and then explaining how the manifold specialized operations in which we are engaged act and react upon one another to make up the whole.

I don't know of any single term which clearly characterizes what I have in mind, but if I had to use a single term it would be to synthesize rather than specialize.

As I look around the business community—as well as the larger national and international community—the gravest flaw I see is the inability of people who should be our leaders to take a tolerably broad view of what is going on and hence what needs to be done about it. Striking examples of what I have in mind can be found in the newspaper JULY, 1962

headlines every day. Take Africa for example. We are told what to do by military experts, economic experts, political experts, cultural experts, religious experts, to mention only a few specialists on the job.

But how do we put all these specialized pieces into a meaningful and perhaps manageable whole? Virtually no one even starts to try and tell us. Yet such comprehension is a basic essential of an adequately enlightened community and is needed if this country hopes to be a leader in world affairs.

So if you would embark on a goal that will give you perspective both in breadth and depth, not only will you be a scarce item, but the world will eventually beat a path to your door. And you will never need concern yourself about finding an interesting life.

Top marks in business will bring greater rewards than those in school

By now I've run out of both time and ideas, so let me conclude on this note.

Today, you are stepping out into a world of great new challenges and opportunities. You've had a wonderful training at Tech to prepare you for some of these challenges, and the economic environment you are entering is remarkably bright.

Success in the business world is no harder to attain than success at college, if you will bring to it the same steadfastness of purpose, ambition, imagination, energy, and hard work that you did here at school. Not only that but the A's you may make in life bear all sorts of rewards that go beyond the A's you make at school.

You are entering a world which is wonderful in its vitality, scientific ingenuity, and its potentiality for becoming civilized. Not only do you have a chance to help invent, design, produce and sell products and services that will make this country and others a better place to live, you even have an outside chance of helping eliminate man's historic inhumanity to man.

So I congratulate you, and your parents, and Georgia Tech on your academic achievement celebrated here today, and I also congratulate you on the wonderful world you are formally entering.

Reach out to meet it. And good luck in making the most and best of it.

TECH ALUMNI GIVING WINS $3,000 IN AWARDS Only Princeton stood above your recent efforts in the category of sustained performance according to judges of the American Alumni Council competition.

Tech with a total of $3,000 in prize money was the only Southern institution of higher learning listed among the six top winners in the fourth annual Alumni Giving Incentive Awards competition sponsored by the United States Steel Foundation and administered by the American Alumni Council it was announced on June 27 from Banff during the 47th annual conference of the American Alumni Council.

The Georgia Tech National Alumni Association received $2,000 and a U. S. Steel trophy for second place in the Grand Awards for the "best sustained performance in alumni giving" by a university or college. First place winner in this category was Princeton University. The awards were presented for "distinguished achievement in the development of alumni support."

Tech also was honored with the first place award of $1,000 and a trophy for the "best sustained performance" by a public institution in the nine-category competition BANFF, ALBERTA, CANADA—Georgia

which qualified the winners for the grand awards' competition. This marked the second consecutive year that Tech had received first place in this category.

More than 300 universities, colleges and schools in all parts of the United States and Canada submitted entries for the 1962 Incentive Awards, with the final selections made by a panel of judges experienced in the field of educational fund raising.

Tech's record—over 40% of its alumni have contributed to the annual roll calls for seven consecutive years—is unmatched by a public institution in the history of alumni giving. The judging was done on the basis of results of campaigns prior to the 1961-62 year. During this year's campaign, which closed June 30, Tech alumni set a new record in percentage of alumni giving for a roll call with 12,230 of its alumni giving to the campaign, a percentage of 45.3%. Last year's record figures were 11,603 alumni contributors, a percentage of 44.2%. Chairman of this year's campaign was Dan McKeever, newly-elected vice president of the Association.

For the sixth consecutive year, The Georgia Tech Alumnus was among the winners in the publications competition also sponsored by the American Alumni Council. The Tech magazine received a Special award for "significant editorial achievement" for its March, 1962 issue on "The State of College Humor." A picture from the February issue of the magazine (Snow Madness by Tech student Bernie Wenke) was also honored as one of the "25 best pictures of the year."

In the national direct mail competition in connection with the conference, the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association received the third-place award for its dues and membership promotion campaign.

Alumni Association Executive Secretary Roane Beard flew to Banff to attend the conference but was unable to attend the awards' ceremony. On his first night in Canada, Beard was stricken with acute appendicitis and was rushed to a local hospital where he received an emergency operation. He spent the week in the hospital and was presented the awards by Dr. Homer Turner, '25, executive director of the United States Steel Foundation.

was the advice a fellow Waycross High School teacher gave me on how to act when I came to Tech—the only woman among thirty-one English professors and the first woman member of the department.

Last May, I accepted Dr. A. J. Walker's offer to fill a year's vacancy left by Dr. Larry Rubin on a teachership to Poland: "I feel that the best value will be in your seeing the conditions under which we labor and the objectives we aim at," he wrote. "We in turn can learn from you much of what we have to expect from our students and gain a better understanding of high school problems."

Frankly, I was, like Macbeth, full of saucy doubts and fears. Could 1 adjust to a college man's world after teaching high school boys and girls for over thirty years? When I made my reconnaissance visit to Tech in June, I was nervous as any freshman. On my way to the English department, I saw dozens of Techmen, casual in shorts and sneakers, who gave me opaque stares. They showed no surprise on seeing a woman in their domain. But maybe they mistook me for one of the fifty coeds on the campus.

When my conference was over, Professors Haman and Hamrick invited me to lunch. Strolling back from "The Robbery," my heel struck a pebble and down I went. On that hot concrete I looked like Cleopatra stretched out on her barge. My new hat that I'd bought to boost my morale rolled into the shrubbery—along with my dignity. It took both men to hoist me. What a beginning to make on a new job! But I resolved to adjust no matter how often I fell down and had to be picked up.

JULY, 1962

It took all summer to assemble an outfit I thought glamorous enough for the first departmental meeting in September. Dr. Walker had written that it would be followed by coffee in the lounge so that my male colleagues could meet me. But on the appointed day I was so enamoured with the idea of living in. the city and teaching at the renowned Georgia Institute of Technology that I forgot the meeting.

I was having my beauty nap when the department secretary called: "Aren't you coming to the meeting?" "Oh-h-h-h," I groaned, "I'll be there in a minute." There wasn't time for the new outfit. I threw on a shirtwaist dress, a pair of hose with runs in them, my old-lady lace-up shoes, and tore out of my apartment. My watch told me I was already fifteen minutes late. Desperate, I looked to the right and the left for help. Two men lounged in a parked truck just inside the Tech gates. "Will you take me to the Classroom Building?" I implored. "Sure, lady," one said in astonishment, "but where is it?" (I hadn't noticed that they were not wearing the pinstriped uniform of Tech employees.)

I directed them, and we roared up the hill. I arrived breathless, and all the men stood. Forgiveness is sweet!

But during the year I was late to so many meetings that Dr. Walker's patience almost wore out. Occasionally he'd give me a mirthless smile. Sometimes I forgot to go at all!

"I don't believe you like our meetings," he said. "But I do," I insisted. "I love them, but I'm not used to going to meetings on company time. In Waycross High School we teach five solid hours, with thirty minutes for homeroom, fifteen minutes for yard duty, and fifteen minutes for lunch. After all these years, I'm so geared up for work that I can't re13

MY MIND IS STILL OPEN-continued member your leisurely meetings when everybody is fresh and full of ideas. Back home I'm so tired when ours come at the end of a grueling day that I try to hide behind somebody and go to sleep. I can't CEREBRATE." (That is a word I picked up at Tech.)

Those meetings are just one difference I found between teaching in college and high school. Tech professors have such heavenly working conditions that they can be both human and scholarly. With only two or three classes a day, they have time for talk and coffee in their lovely lounge.

Here and at the Faculty Club, where we lunched, I tried to keep my mouth shut and my mind open but never succeeded very long. They have time for conferences with students and, best of all, time for STUDY. They don't go to class poorly prepared the way I've done in high school many times.

And they have privacy. My office was an Elysian retreat, with air-conditioning, telephone, typewriter, a desk as long as the Waycross post office, and a swivel chair. (I nearly swiveled myself to death the first quarter.) And their classes are blessedly free of interruptions. Rarely at Tech is the sanctity of the classroom violated. Nobody barged in with announcements of basketball and football practice, tryouts for cheerleaders, glee club, band . . . I knew, of course, that Tech had many extracurricular activities going on all the time, but they never impinged on the classroom. And not once did a fire drill galvanize a class into frenzied action.

(A fire just wouldn't dare break out while a professor was enthralling a class with T. S. Eliot's "The Hollow Men.") The atmosphere was strictly academic. When the steam whistle blasted the end of the hour, students moved purposefully toward the next class or conference.

I admit, though, the first few days I was scared. Professor David Comer tried to quiet my fears. "Don't worry," he said. "They're more frightened than you. They'll never suspect that you haven't been here for fifty years—or a hundred." (Those were his exact words!) And he was right. The men seemed to accept me. (I called the students MEN, and the professors BOYS, a distinction which seemed to please everybody.) One of my former Waycross students, a senior at Tech, cautioned me the first day: "Don't be too easy. You don't want them to say 'Aw, that old lady'll pass me!' " Most Tech students, I soon discovered, are more seriousminded about mathematics, a five-hour course, and chemistry, a four-hour course, than -ffiey are about English, a three-hour course. And I could see how they would be, with the emphasis on the point-average. 1 heard one student congratulate himself on not getting a hard English instructor: "I have all I can worry about with math and chemistry. I just can't afford to worry about English too." I saw men working problems on paper napkins in the cafeteria, sitting on the sidewalks—anywhere. They often came to me leaden-eyed from staying up all night studying for a quiz—but rarely for one in English. Some of them confessed to writ14

ing themes after they'd worn themselves out studying everything else.

I told a class that it was a new experience for me to teach a subject that ranked third in the curriculum. "Maybe you're in the wrong school, Miss Lane," a fellow said soberly. Offended, I took as my text the importance of English IN ANY SCHOOL: "A former president of Columbia University once said that the ability to use one's native tongue with felicity and precision is one of the marks of an educated man . . . " I drove home the point, I thought, that engineers weren't excluded from the world of the educated.

The class didn't look impressed.

When freshmen came to me for conferences, I learned much about their problems. Of course, many blamed inadequate high school training for their shortcomings. Nearly all said that they didn't write enough and weren't graded hard enough. I winced when their criticism hit my old bailiwick. What they failed to consider, though, was how little time high school English teachers have, with their heavy academic schedules and extracurricular duties. Some freshmen admitted concentrating more on sports and other activities than on their studies. How they wished they'd worked harder!

One troubled fellow who couldn't get the hang of themewriting asked me: "Can't you give me a formula—you know, like we have in math?" Another said that every time he opened his English handbook he got sleepy. And one student misspelled WHO four times in one theme. He spelled it Ho. I tried to help those bewildered freshmen who were deft with figures and clumsy with words. I used every trick I'd acquired in high school and all those I'd picked up from Tech instructors. My biggest shock came when a student said he'd learned so much in my class that he wanted to fail the course so that he could repeat it and learn some more. I obliged him with an F. Not only did I enjoy teaching my own three courses of freshman English but was privileged to audit a merit freshman course under Professor Russell and two sophomore courses under Professors Almon and Rainey. In these literature classes it was easy to keep my mouth shut and my mind open. Good as the instructors were, the students were better. Discussions crackled. Everybody listened to everybody else. The very expressions on students' faces told me that they'd come a long way from high school's "Silas Marner."

At lunch one day last fall, Dr. Weber, Dean of Faculties, asked me in fun what I'd like to change at Tech. All I could think of, in this land of God's plenty, was to swap that ear-splitting factory whistle with its Banshee wail for a carillon, perhaps, something that would connote culture instead of the dinner pail. When he asked me this same question again at the end of the year, I told him that I'd still like to see this innovation. "But, better still," I said, "I'd like to see students have the same passion for good writing that they have for mathematics and chemistry."

Actually, I'd be willing to keep my mouth shut about that dreadful whistle if English could become the fair-haired child at Tech.

MARY LANE, TEACHER Since 1924, the woman pictured on this page has devoted her life to the teaching of English in Georgia high schools.

Last fall at the request of Tech's English department, she took a year's leave from her duties as department head at Waycross High School to teach at the college level. Her impact on the Tech campus was dramatic. The students who labored under her regarded Miss Lane with the traditional mixture of fear and admiration always accorded a serious teacher. Her colleagues were full of praise for her work. "She taught us that the gulf between high school and college teaching is not impassable; good teachers remain good teachers," reported her department head, Dr. A. J. Walker. But perhaps another Tech English teacher summed up Mary Lane best when he said, "She was always so obsessed with maintaining Tech standards in her classes. I never had the nerve to tell her that her standards were often higher than ours."

PM has come to the Southeast, and thanks to it, the 7,239-seat addition to the athletic stadium at the Georgia Institute of Technology should be completed more than a month ahead of schedule—44 days before Tech's Yellow Jackets are slated to take on Clemson's Tigers in their first home game of the season.

You've never heard of CPM? It's a fairly new development. .#• The letters stand for Critical Path Method, a new scheduling procedure which is presently claiming the limelight in engineering literature. CPM might be termed just another application of good industrial engineering techniques. In the simplest terms, CPM is super-colossal planning ahead.

CPM can save loads of valuable time and piles of money. CPM and related decision techniques are highly versatile. A Navy operations team used a system closely akin to CPM to help make the Polaris Missile operational two years ahead of schedule. With CPM a chemical plant cut 37 per cent from shutdown time for a periodic maintenance job, gaining a valuable 97 production hours per month.

CPM is responsible for some spectacular construction achievements far more complex than the double-decking of the East Stands of Tech's Grant Field, although this marks the first time the method has been applied to construction of an athletic stadium.

CPM is a system for helping the executive make up his mind. The human mind, without assistance, cannot weigh the complexities in the development of a missile such as Polaris, the erection of a 40-story office building, the output of hundreds of products for millions of consumers.

CPM and other scheduling plans are coming to the rescue.

Before describing how CPM came to Georgia Tech, it is necessary to look closer at how CMP works. When CPM is applied, the initial move is to analyze all the work to be done on a given project, break it down into individual tasks, and then estimate how long each will probably take and how much it will cost. This information is now diagrammed as a network showing which activities must await completion of other jobs and which tasks can be carried on simultaneously with other phases of the project. This scheduling network is based on obvious logic that people commonly apply to their everyday activities.

The overall time estimate to complete the project depends on a key concept, the critical path. The critical path is the sequence of jobs in which any holdup can delay completion of the entire project. On the other hand, if these critical path jobs are rushed, the whole project can be completed early.

Usually, we will find that most of the tasks do not lie on the critical path and should they take a little longer than planned, our project will still meet its completion deadline.

CPM AND THE EAST STANDS-continued who has had training in the application of CPM might work out the network manually and make adjustments. The critical path network for Grant Field's second deck was diagrammed manually because only 107 "events," or tasks remained when CPM was applied. But there are over 1,000 steps involved in the construction of a modest industrial plant; up to 30,000 for the development of a large missile!

The human mind could hardly attempt to analyze and adjust such a network. Here the modern electronic computer takes over. Such a device can glean all the necessary data from the CPM network. Time and cost estimates, the relation of each job to all others are reduced to a numerically coded program. In minutes the computer calculates how long the project will take and how much it will cost. The computer also does what no human mind could. It shows continually how plans should be changed to keep the project on schedule and within the budget. CPM users avoid costly crash programs. They have found-<fhat even in emergencies they seldom have to speed up more than 10 per cent of the work.

PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique), a close relative to CPM, is currently being used for the production of a forthcoming Broadway play, Morgana. PERT keeps track of some 200 steps producers must take before opening night.

CPM AND THE EAST STANDS-continued Stands' second deck, CPM's money-saving abilities were not a consideration. The contracts had been let several months earlier. But Athletic Assn. officials were becoming concerned about time. The deck had to be completed before September 22, date of the first game.

They were using a modified second deck plan worked out in 1951 and then laid aside because of the steel shortages resulting from the Korean conflict. Bob Eskew, business manager of the Athletic Assn., said that this seemed to be the most economical plan for'Stadium enlargement. The Grant Field seating situation had become so acute he could not even fill ticket demands from active Tech alumni. Work began on December 4, 1961. The completion date was set for September 1. This date had to be changed because of a discovery in an Alabama city.

Birmingham had recently enlarged its Legion Stadium with a second deck. This deck remained empty through the 1961 football season after structural shortcomings were found. This has since been corrected. Tech officials were 20

sure their second deck would be sound, but they wanted no repeat of the Legion Field situation. They revised their plans, incorporating more reinforcing steel into their second deck. Work never ceased during this time, but the completion date was moved to September 15. Even with weather delays taken into consideration, this was cutting things too close for comfort.

Now CPM came to the Tech campus through John Vail, assistant professor of mathematics. Vail had been discussing some operations research techniques with Leon Robertson, a Tech alumnus and former Tech instructor.

During one of their discussions, the use of CPM on construction projects came up and Vail said he thought it would be particularly suitable for the Tech stadium since time was a critical factor.

After Vail consulted with Tech officials, Robertson's firm, Arthur Andersen & Co., an accounting organization, agreed to use CPM on the stadium. Robertson and Dick Culberson, a manager in the Arthur Andersen administrative services div. in Atlanta, spent several hours with the prime contractor, Capital Construction Co., and with sub-contractors TECH ALUMNUS

to secure the necessary information. Capital Construction is headed by Roswell and Doyle Butler, both graduates of Tech. Contractors supplied the work schedules for the network. Culberson and Robertson then produced the network for the stadium.

Doubtless, the contractors could have met their projected completion deadline, but CPM showed them how they could do even better.

Tech Coach Bobby Dodd said the network looked "foreign" when Vail delivered it to him, but that he did not see any reason why it wouldn't work in Tech's case after being so successful on other projects. Jt showed that stadium work could be completed as early as August 8! Eskew said that he was still confused about CPM until a matter of days before it was to go into effect. Then he read an article about the scheduling technique in Fortune Magazine and the whole thing became clear to him.

CPM took over construction scheduling on April 30 and things began to hum. The network contained 107 steps to completion, inspection and acceptance. It showed the earliest possible completion time for each step, the latest possible completion time for each step and where the critical path lay. This critical path appeared where the earliest and latest completion times were the same.

As shown in the network diagram accompanying this article, the deck was being constructed in five units. All the sub-surface work and Unit One, the north ramp, had been completed before application of CPM. Critical paths are shown on the diagram in heavy unbroken and broken lines. Broken lines indicate the physical movement of the path where certain events are not on the path and the numbers for these events are skipped. Events 1, 37, 65, and 28 are all shown on the critical path since none of the other work could proceed on the units until structural steel had been erected. Earliest and latest possible completion times in all these events were the same.

American Bridge Co., structural steel contractors, brought the world's largest land crane to the site to erect the steel.

The crane weighs 100 tons and has a boom 170 feet long.

Eskew was worried about what this monstrous machine would do to the paving on Fowler St. By doing a little figuring in the palm of his hand with a pen, an American Bridge engineer showed Eskew that the crane's weight was so perfectly distributed on its tracks, that it would exert less pressure on a given spot than a woman's high heel shoe.

Alter completing Unit Two, the network called for the gigantic crane to move to Unit Five, the south ramp, to erect steel there. However, a smaller crane took on this work, freeing the larger machine for work on Unit Three.

This work was to begin on the 18th working day, May 24.

Work actually began on the 10th working day, May 14, and was finished in less than three days. It was not scheduled for completion until May 29.

CPM AND THE EAST STANDSâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;continued under the supervision of George Samples, that they were able to complete steel work on all units on the 36th working day. The network had given them 51 days! Favorable weather in this period was also a factor contributing to the speed with which the steel went in.

Other contractors began moving ahead of completion dates, even leaving network estimates far behind. Promenade decking, for instance, had to be completed on the 52nd working day. It was all in on the 36th working day!

The longest stretch of the critical path in the network appears on Unit Four. This is natural since structural steel for this unit was erected last. The path is critical from Event 65 to Event 66. Here the path splits since there is one day's leeway shown from Event 66 to Event 73. But now the path becomes critical from Event 74 to Event 79. Events 80, 81 and 82 are not critical. The network indicates three days of leeway for Event 80, three days for Event 81 and five days for Event 82. The path is now critical from Event 83 all the way through Event 89 since earliest possible and latest possible completion dates are the same.

Electricians took advantage of American Bridge's huge crane before it was moved away on June 22. Because Tech Athletic Association officials were concerned about the possibility of lighting not being available on the east side of the field for the Georgia High School All Stars Game on August 2, the electricians rigged the lights in their cages on the ground and had the mighty crane life the cages onto their columns which were already in position.

"The beautiful part of this network," Eskew remarked, "is that it shows us how individual operations are progressing, and whether the sub-contractors are meeting their schedules. Adjustments can be made in work schedules because it also reveals slack time which can be put to use."

He said that short cuts often show up on work schedules when CPM is used.

"Now the painters, the iron workers, the plumbers, the electriciansâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all are ahead of their schedules, thanks to CPM," Eskew said.

Tech officials who had been gravely concerned about time only weeks before, are now breathing easy with CPM on the job. Their smiles broaden as the work progresses.

CPM is paying off. They know they will have those 7.239 new stadium seats in plenty of time for the September 22 kickoff. Except for option and priority seats, Grant Field is already sold out for the season. The $886,585 second deck project raises the seating capacity of the stadium to 51,254.

Contractors are now certain they can finish the work on August 8, the date shown on the critical path network, without rushing any individual tasks.

Tfye- InstituteNew Nuclear Engineering School established

IN JULY Georgia Tech took two giant strides forward into the Nuclear Age with the establishment of a School of Nuclear Engineering and a Nuclear Sciences Research Division.

The new school offers a graduate program leading to a master's degree in nuclear engineering and the research division will function as a part of Tech's Engineering Experiment Station.

According to Dr. William B. Harrison, who heads the new school and research division, the graduate nuclear program actually has been offered at Tech for the past five years, but courses were taken through other departments. Students pursuing nuclear studies were regarded as members of the School of Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, for instance. T h e new School of Nuclear Engineering will provide for the administrative needs of these students.

The most significant addition to Tech's nuclear program will be the $4.5 million reactor facility due for completion late this year. "When the reactor goes into operation," Harrison said, "opportunities will be greatly expanded for our graduate research.

"The reactor will increase possibilities for these studies by advanced studeijfc," he added, "and although the present nuclear program is limited to master's degree level, we are preparing to offer the Ph.D. in nuclear engineering as soon as possible."

Thirteen faculty members honored on retirement

THIRTEEN well-known Tech staff members were honored upon their retirement during the annual faculty dinner held May 15.

Seven other members of the staff received recognition for completing 25 years' service to the Institute.

Leading the retiring members on years of service was Earle E. Bortell, associate professor in the School of Physics, with 41 years at Tech. Closely following Professor Bortell were William B. Johns, Jr., director of the School of Engineering Mechanics, with 40 years; Miss Mary Eleazar Brown, administrative assistant to the Dean of Faculties, with 40 years; and Dr. Homer S. Weber, director of the School of Mechanical Engineering, with 38 years.

Other retiring members included Ernest W. Aldredge, associate professor of Industrial Management; Winfield A. Brooks, associate professor of Industrial Engineering; Claude J. Brown, shop technician, Engineering Experiment Station; Albert E. Cannon, professor of Applied Biology; Dr. Joseph G. Mayton, lecturer in Modern Languages; Francis J. Mee, lecturer in Engineering Mechanics; Alfred T. Navarre, associate professor of Ceramic Engineering; Harry C. Savage, Jr., associate professor of Engineering Mechanics; and Miss Bessie C. Tech gets first-of-its-kind research project

A $40,000 TECHNICAL assistance contract with Georgia Tech for study of economic potentials in Carroll County has been approved by the Area Redevelopment Administration of the U. S. Commerce Dept.

It is the first program of its type in the nation.

The project, to be carried out by Georgia Tech's Industrial Development Branch is designed to help Carroll County organize and

implement a systematic balanced, longrange development program. Results of the project will also prove valuable to other redevelopment areas in planning for economic development to create new employment opportunities.

Included in the Carroll program will be basic surveys of the county's economic assets and liabilities; assessment of markets, raw materials and transportation facilities; studies of the labor force and retaining needs; analysis of industrial sites; and contact with industrial firms to help them locate or expand in the area.

Over the past five years, Tech's Industrial Development Branch has conducted feasibility studies of Georgia's economy and has analyzed development problems of a number of local areas. The Carroll study will dovetail with this previous work.

One of the principal features of the Area Redevelopment Act, signed into law

by President Kennedy a year ago, is the provision for technical assistance projects to help local redevelopment areas work out imaginative and effective programs and to break bottlenecks holding back economic advancement.

Tech Library Receives High Honor PRICE GILBERT LIBRARY at the

stitute of Technology has been selected as one of 12 new Regional Technical Report Centers in the nation, according to the National Science Foundation ( N S F ) and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

These centers will make more widely available the unclassified results of government-sponsored research and development programs.

Planning and coordination of the report center system will be carried out by the Office of Technical Services, Department of Commerce. Funding and other assistance for beginning the system will come from NSF's Office of Science Information Service.

Three agencies produce an estimated 90 per cent of the government's unclassified TECH ALUMNUS

technical reports. These are the Department of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Adm., and the Atomic Energy Comm. They have agreed to provide copies of their reports for deposit at each of the centers.

The new system is designed to ease a long-standing problem of disseminating news on results of projects to scientists and technicians.

Other universities and libraries selected as report centers include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John Crerar Library (Chicago), Southern Methodist University. University of Colorado, Linda Hall Library (Kansas City, Mo.), University of California (Los Angeles), Columbia University, Carnegie Library (Pittsburgh), University of California (Berkeley), University of Washington, and the Library of Congress.

DR. JACK HINE, regents' professor of chemistry at Georgia Tech was the eleventh recipient of the Florida Section, American Chemical Society Award. The formal presentation of the Florida Section Award was made during the annual Meeting-in-Miniature banquet at the Hotel Robert Meyer in Jacksonville, May 11. The presentation was made by the Florida Section Chairman, Dr. Harry H. Sisler, Head of the Department of Chemistry, University of Florida.

This award was first presented in 1952 to Dr. Paul Gross of the Chemistry Department of Duke University, and it has been presented annually since then to one from the South who has shown outstanding ability and contributions in research, teaching, and administration, or particularly a combination of these.

Hine, one of Tech's best-known scientists, was born in Corondo, California, June 2, 1923, and received his B.S. from the University of Arkansas in 1943, after which he worked as an assistant research chemist with Cities Service Oil Company until 1945.

He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois in 1947. During 194748, he was a research associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and during 1948-49, a du Pont Fellow at Harvard.

He joined the faculty of Georgia Tech as an assistant professor in 1949, was promoted to associate professor in 1951, to the rank of professor in 1954, and to Regents' Professor in 1958.

In addition to the American Chemical Society membership, Doctor Hine â&#x20AC;˘ is a member of the Chemical Society of London. He has contributed numerous papers to the periodical literature and is author of the book Physical Organic Chemistry, JULY, 1 9 6 2

the second edition of which he has just completed. His research interests have been in reaction mechanisms and the effect of structure on chemical reactivity, particularly for organic polyhalides.

Big day for the scholars

THE TWO TOP scholastic awards of 1962 at Georgia Tech went to Stanley S. Sattinger, Jeffersonville, New York, who received the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Cup, and Richard Dillon Barksdale, Oakland, Florida, who received the Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Cup. Mr. Sattinger is a student in the School of Mechanical Engineering, and Mr. Barksdale is majoring in Civil Engineering.

The cups were presented at the annual Honors' Exercises of the Institute held on June 7. Dr. Vernon Crawford, chairman of the Honors' Committee presided and President Edwin D. Harrison extended greetings.

In addition to the two top honors, 30 other individual scholastic awards were presented; and groups of students were inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma freshman scholarship society, the Tau Beta Pi national honorary engineering fraternity, and the Phi Kappa Phi senior honor society.

DURING the past two months, five of the world's leading scholars including a Nobel Prize winner have visited Georgia Tech under the auspices of the Neely Visiting Professorship Fund, established by Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Neely, '04, of Atlanta.

Dr. Walter Marshall, Director of Theoretical Physics Division, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, England, the sixth of the 196162 series of top scientists or engineers brought to the campus through this Fund, talked to students and faculty members on April 26 and 27. On the 27th he conducted a seminar, "The Present Understanding of Magnetism in Iron-group Metals and Compounds." An internationally recognized authority on the theory of solids, Doctor Marshall was a special lecturer at both the University of California and at Harvard University before assuming his present duties at Harwell.

Dr. Milton E. Raville, Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Mechanics at Kansas State University, was the seventh of the 1961-62 series.

Doctor Raville visited Tech on April 30 and May 1 to present lectures on "An Extension of the Rayleigh-Ritz Procedure," and "The Education of Aerospace Engineers."

Doctor Raville has been a member of the Kansas State University engineering staff since 1947, and professor and head of the Department of Applied Mechanics since 1956.

The 1936 Nobel prize winner in chemistry, Dr. Peter J. W. Debye, Professor-

Emeritus of Chemistry at Cornell University, lectured on the campus on May 8 and 9. He spoke on the subjects "Spotlights on Science in the Early Years of the Century," and "Structure Determination by Scattering of Radiation."

An internationally renowned scientist, Professor Debye is founder and co-founder of several sub-disciplines, and is known to all chemists and physicists for the major role he has played in the development of modern science.

The distinguished visitor was born in Holland in 1884, and became a U.S. citizen in 19^6-. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from Aachen, and a Ph.D. degree from Munich University. Doctor Debye has received honorary doctoral degrees from Oxford University in England, Sofia University in Bulgaria, and Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule, Switzerland; and in the United States from Harvard University, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, St. Lawrence University, Colgate University, and Boston University.

Before joining the staff of Cornell in 1940, he served on university faculties in Germany and Switzerland, and has lectured widely both in the United States and abroad.

In addition to the Nobel prize, he is the recipient of the Rumford Medal (Royal Society, London); Lorentz Medal (Royal Dutch Academy); Max Planck Medal (West Germany Physics Society); two American Chemical Society awards, and others.

He is a member of numerous scientific societies and academies in both the United States and Europe.

Professor Joe Mauk Smith of the University of California, Davis, California, spoke at Tech on May 14, on the subject, "Transport Rates Within Porous Catalysts.''

The lecture presented experimental observations and theoretical concepts relating transport rates to geometrical properties of alumnina systems.

In addition to his wide academic experience at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Maryland, Purdue University, University of New Hampshire, and Northwestern University, he has conducted extensive research for several large chemical and petroleum companies, as well as for the United States Government.

He received a Fulbright Research Scholar Award for study in the Netherlands, and was a Humble Lecturer in Science; Peter C. Reilly Lecturer at Notre Dame; and, in 1960, was the recipient of the William H. Walker Award of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Dr. R. M. Evan-Iwanowski, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Syracuse University, visited the Tech campus on May 24 and 25.

During his visit, Dr. Evan-Iwanowski delivered two lectures on the subjects "Dynamic Stability of Plates," and "Stability of Shells-Nonlinear Theories."

His teaching experience started at Warsaw Polytechnical Institute. In 1949, he was an Instructor at Cornell University 27

William F. Mitchell, ME, has been awarded Chemical Market Research Association's award for 1962. Accompanying this award is a $1,000 scholarship to be given to the school of the recipient's choice.

We are offering recent graduate engineers—aeronautical,electrical, electronic, mechanical, chemical, and aerospace—with one to three years experience the opportunity to j oin a proven career development program for advancement to the $9,000 level within six months to 3 years depending on your experience.

"We" are the many facets of the Navy's Bureau of Naval Weapons, the organization within the civilian Navy that is responsible for creating a vast array of subsurface, surface, air and space weapons—combining the original functions of naval ordnance and aeronautics.

Because the Naval establishment maintains direct control over the design, development, test and evaluation of all its programs, BuWeaps engineers are given far greater responsibilities across a broad spectrum of activities than can be achieved anywhere else. In

this, the supposed "Age of Specialization," the BuWeaps engineer may become involved in the design, management, procurement administration and advance planning for as many as seven or eight unrelated programs.
