2013-14 McCamish Pavilion Fan Guide

Page 1

WELCOME Letter from Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski DEAR YELLOW JACKET BASKETBALL FANS Welcome to McCamish Pavilion, the state-of-the-art home of Georgia Tech basketball. As we enter the second year in our remarkable arena, we look forward to you being a part of the action this season. The 2013-14 season promises to be an exciting one for many reasons. Our coaches and student-athletes look forward to competing in the expanded ACC, as the conference further stakes its claim as the country’s best with the addition of Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. Coach Brian Gregory has a veteran team ready to tackle the best home schedule in program history. The Jackets return four starters and five of their six top scorers from last season, giving this team plenty of experience on the floor. Illinois, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Miami, North Carolina and Duke all travel to Atlanta during this season. I know Coach Gregory appreciates how enthusiastically Georgia Tech fans have embraced his team and McCamish Pavilion. Attendance was up almost 50 percent last season, the fourth-highest increase in the nation. “Tech Tough” is the rallying cry for Coach MaChelle Joseph’s squad, as they welcome a stellar freshman class to complement their upperclassmen. Senior guard Tyaunna Marshall is among the nation’s elite, and she finished last season as the only player in the ACC to rank in the conference’s top 10 in scoring, rebounding and steals. Their home schedule includes key ACC contests against perennial powers Duke, North Carolina and Maryland. There will be no shortage of talent taking the court for the Jackets, and McCamish Pavilion is the place to be as our teams battle for postseason berths. At every game, your safety, comfort and convenience are our primary concerns. This fan guide is intended to provide information about policies, procedures and services available to you when attending games on campus. I hope you’ll take the time to review it prior to your visit as it should answer many of your questions about gameday activities. As I’m midway through my first full year at Georgia Tech, I’d like to thank you for your support of Georgia Tech basketball. Passionate fans are synonymous with college basketball, and we need you to bring the energy and enthusiasm that will give our Yellow Jackets a true home court advantage. I look forward to seeing you on campus and please know that we want your visit to be safe and enjoyable. If you have any questions, concerns or need assistance of any type, please contact a member of our gameday staff. Thanks for your support and Go Jackets! Sincerely,

McCAMISH PAVILION Georgia Tech basketball ushered in the dawning of a new era marked by the opening of McCamish Pavilion last year. Occupying the same footprint on the corner of 10th and Fowler Streets as the historic Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which hosted Tech basketball games for 55 years, McCamish Pavilion opened its doors Nov. 9, 2012 when the Tech men hosted Tulane. The women held their first game just two days later, hosting Tennessee on Nov. 1, 2012. It was the first of three sellouts for the men, and the women hosted the fifth-largest crowd in program history (5,517). McCamish Pavilion drew raves from friend and foe alike in its inaugural season, from its state-of-the-art audio-visual technology to the cozy and intimate, but loud atmosphere. McCamish Pavilion is named for the late Hank McCamish, a long-time insurance executive in the Atlanta area whose family provided the lead gift for the $50 million facility. The arena footprint expanded by about 30,000 square feet over that of Alexander Memorial Coliseum, and the former circular seating bowl was demolished and replaced with a rectangular bowl along with an upper deck. The most obvious difference is that the walls separating the concourse and the bowl were removed, meaning that the floor is visible from almost every point in the concourse. Ground was broken for the construction of Tech’s new on-campus arena on May 5, 2011, and 18 months later, the Yellow Jackets had a state-of-

2 RAMBLINWRECK.COM

the-art building with 8,600 seats and a luxurious club area, which provides a cozy view of the court. The lower level seating bowl has 6,935 seats, and the new balcony level seating has 1,665 seats. Spectators are able to view the game as they walk to and from concessions and rest rooms, which are all located on the outside of the concourse. The balcony level seating has its own concourses with rest rooms and concessions. The building features a new center-hung scoreboard, with video screens on four sides and a circular message board underneath. The balcony level facing has a 360-degree ribbon board for messaging and graphics. Nearly the entire structure is brand-new, with the one notable exception being the familiar dome of Alexander Memorial Coliseum and its 32 steel ribs, which stayed in place and provided the skeleton for the new structure. A new roof was installed, and the ribs and the ceiling were re-painted. Around the concourses, pieces of the former AMC court have been inlaid into the ribs. A courtyard was created

outside the West entrance to honor William Alexander, the legendary Tech football coach and director of athletics who led the drive to build Alexander Memorial Coliseum in the 1950s. The new court remains named for legendary basketball coach Bobby Cremins, who led the Tech men’s team from 1981-2000 and compiled a record of 354237 with three Atlantic Coast Conference championships and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances in 19 seasons. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Populous and built under the direction of Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, the arena already has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects of Atlanta for its significant architectural impact on the city’s landscape along with such structures as the Sovereign building, TWELVE Centennial Park Tower I, The Atlantic, Loews Midtown, the Atlanta Botanical Garden Hardin Visitor Center, the Georgia Tech Human Research Building rehabilitation, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Building and the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center.

He was one of Georgia Tech’s most respected alumni and the quintessential self-made entrepreneur. He enrolled in Georgia Tech in 1946 and paid his tuition by working many part-time jobs. HEAD COACHES BRIAN GREGORY Men’s Head Coach Brian Gregory, who led the University of Dayton to 97 victories over his last four seasons there and worked under Tom Izzo at Michigan State when the Spartans won the 2000 NCAA Championship, was named Georgia Tech’s head basketball coach on March 28, 2011. Gregory coached eight seasons at Dayton where he compiled a record of 172-94 and participated in the NCAA Tournament or NIT five times. The 1990 Oakland (Mich.) University graduate won 150 games faster (seven seasons) than any coach in Dayton history. Gregory clearly put an emphasis on academics during

MaCHELLE JOSEPH Women’s Head Coach MaChelle Joseph has taken the Georgia Tech women’s basketball program to new heights, has compiled a 193-122 and has the highest overall and ACC winning percentage of any Tech coach in program history. She enters her 11th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets in 2013-14 looking to become only the second coach in program history to win 200 games. The 2012-13 season had some growing pains as Tech finished 14-16, but a number of the young Jackets earned valuable experience that will significantly help in the coming seasons.

his tenure at Dayton. Entering the 2010-11 season, every senior who played for Gregory graduated (23-of-23). Gregory has gone about laying the foundation for similar success in the Yellow Jackets’ program. The Yellow Jackets demonstrated significant improvement in year two with a winning record (16-15), three road victories in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and two wins over teams ranked among the top 30 in the RPI - Saint Mary’s and ACC Champion Miami. Tech also scored a victory over rival Georgia for the second straight year, something that hasn’t been done since the early 1990s, and the win at Miami was Tech’s first win on the road over a top-10 team since 2004. He and his staff made a big splash on the recruiting trail in their first year on the job, signing

four highly-regarded high school players from the Atlanta area to form a class ranked as high as 14th nationally. He has added three more highly regarded players for the 2013-14 season. Two of Tech’s 2012-13 freshmen - Chris Bolden and Marcus Georges-Hunt, made the ACC’s AllAcademic team while starting for the Jackets, and a third member of the class, Robert Carter, Jr., was named to the ACC All-Freshman team. All six of the seniors in the Tech program since Gregory arrived have graduated, or are scheduled to, by the end of the summer following their senior seasons - Maurice Miller and Lance Storrs in 2011, Derek Craig and Nick Foreman in 2012, and Pierre Jordan (graduate degree) and Mfon Udofia in 2013. Gregory and wife Yvette have two daughters, Isabella and Elyse.

Tyaunna Marshall was the brightest star on the Yellow Jackets all season as the junior earned All-ACC first team, ACC All-Defensive Team, Associated Press honorable mention all-America and WBCA honorable mention All-America honors. Sophomore Sydney Wallace continued to show flashes of scoring brilliance, while freshmen Roddreka Rogers and Aaliyah Whiteside stepped into the starting lineup and were significant contributors in their first year on the Flats. Under the tutelage of Joseph, five Yellow Jackets have been selected in the WNBA Draft, including first round selections Alex Montgomery (10th overall in 2011 by the New York Liberty) and Sasha Goodlett (11th overall in 2012 by the Indiana Fever).

Fourteen Yellow Jackets have earned All-ACC honors and three – Janie Mitchell in 2008, Brigitte Ardossi in 2010 and Sasha Goodlett in 2012 – have earned the Georgia College Player of the Year award from the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Joseph has twice (2007 and 2012) been named the Georgia College Coach of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. A native of Auburn, Ind., Joseph graduated from Purdue in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in movement and sports science.
