2009 GEORGIA TECH FOOTBALL FAN GUIDE
LETTER FROM AD
Dear Yellow Jacket Fans: I know the anticipation of another exciting Georgia Tech football season under Coach Paul Johnson is building. Yellow Jacket football in 2009 promises to be more fun than ever with a solid returning group of players from last year’s 9-4 team, a sensational slate of home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium and some exciting new in-stadium improvements. All you have to do is come out and enjoy the thrill and pageantry of college football, Georgia Tech style.
DAN RADAKOVICH Director of Athletics
We are once again providing this Fan Guide in the hope that it will make your Georgia Tech football experience more rewarding. You should be able to find the answer to many of the questions you may have related to our campus, parking, game-day events and services in and around Bobby Dodd Stadium. It is our goal to make your visit pleasant and enjoyable. It will also provide you with a small glimpse into our history and traditions here at Tech. We feel that we are fortunate to play in one of the nation’s most historic venues, with the Grant Field tradition going back 96 years to it’s opening in 1913. We hope you enjoy the setting, which is truly one of the most dramatic in all of college football. This year you will see that we have added a little more sizzle to the proud old structure, with a new video board, scoreboards and other LED components, as well as a new and improved sound system. These are just a few of the upgrades we have been making in the off-season to improve the fan experience here on the Flats. All in all, it appears we are set and ready to go. Our game day staff stands ready to assist you in any way as you visit Georgia Tech this fall. We truly appreciate your support and understand that our success here is in great measure a product of the support that you provide. I want to personally thank you all and hope to see each of you throughout the 2009 season. Go Jackets!
Sincerely,
Dan Radakovich Director of Athletics

TECH TRADITIONS
2!-",).´ 72%#+ &)'(4 3/.' The Georgia Tech fight song grew out of an old folk ballad, “The Sons of the Gamboliers.” Howard D. Cutter, a member of Tech’s first graduating class (Mechanical Engineering, 1892), wrote in the November-December 1942 issue of the Georgia Tech Alumnus that the “Ramblin’ Wreck” had its origins during the first two years after Tech opened in 1888, inspired when the entire student body traveled to Athens to see Tech’s baseball team defeat Georgia. By the early 1900s, “Ramblin’ Wreck” was an established tradition. The earliest existing published version of the song appeared in the Blueprint, the Institute’s yearbook, in 1908. In 1910, Michael A. Greenblatt, Tech’s first bandmaster, discovered the band playing “Ramblin’ Wreck” to the tune of “Sons of the Gamboliers,” and made his first arrangement of the song in the form of a handwritten manuscript. When Frank Roman succeeded Greenblatt as bandmaster in 1911, he wrote a new adaptation of “Ramblin’ Wreck,” accompanied by many trumpet flourishes, that became nationally known. His is the version that continues to be popular today.
Khrushchev at their historic face-to-face meeting in Moscow. In 1984, the law firm of Newton, Hopkins & Ormsby investigated the copyright of “Ramblin’ Wreck” and found that a number of people have had various versions of the song copyrighted. The original version of the song is in the public domain and can be played without payment of royalties. I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer, A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer, Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear, I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer. Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold, And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold. But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do. He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used to do. Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds, A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around. I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near. I’m a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.
The fame of the song spread to such proportions that in 1959 it was sung by Richard Nixon and Nikita
7()4% '/,$ In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a game was scheduled between Auburn and Georgia. A rivalry was already established in baseball between Tech and Georgia, so Tech students were invited to the game to cheer, of course, for Auburn. The students appointed a committee to recommend colors to be worn and cheers to be used at the game. The committee suggested white and gold, and about 200 students attended the game wearing those colors.

In 1893, when Georgia Tech’s football team played Georgia for the first time, a group of young women from the Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls attended the game to cheer for Tech, dressed in white and gold. Oh well it’s up with the White and Gold Down with the Red and Black Georgia Tech is out for the victory We’ll drop the battle axe on Georgia’s head When we meet her, our team is sure to beat her Down on the old farm there will be no sound Till our bow-wows rip through the air When the battle is over, Georgia’s team will be found With the Yellow Jackets swarming around.

and finally found one-parked in front of his apartment building. The owner, Capt. Ted J. Johnson, a Delta Air Lines pilot, had just finished restoring the 1930 Ford Cabriolet Sport Coupe, which he intended to give to his son as a gift.
The event did not establish a new tradition at Georgia Tech, but it cemented one. The vehicle, a restored 1930 Model A Ford Sport Coupe, was Tech’s first official Rambling Wreck car.
Johnson decided to let Tech have the car for $1,000 in May, 1961. He later returned the purchase price in the form of a contribution to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, fulfilling a desire to go on record as having given the Rambling Wreck to Georgia Tech.
Since that time, the Rambling Wreck car has joined a much older tradition-the Yellow Jacket-as an official school mascot.
4(% 9%,,/7 *!#+%4
The term Rambling Wreck was first applied to a 1914 Ford owned by Floyd Field, Dean of Men. In the first published reference to the car as the “Rambling Wreck” in 1927, the Technique student newspaper spoke out against Field when he considered trading the car, but he did it anyway. Tech officials decided in the late 1950s that the school needed an official car that would be known forever as the Rambling Wreck. Dean of Students James Dull began a search for a pre-1940 vintage model,
18
Conflicting accounts exist as to the origins and beginnings of the Yellow Jacket, but the nickname did not grow out of the familiar six-legged insect; rather, the insect mascot, known as “Buzz,” grew out of the nickname. The first known reference to Tech students as “Yellowjackets” appeared in the Atlanta Constitution in 1905 and came into common usage at that time. The name, spelled as one word, was first used to describe supporters who attended Tech athletic events, dressed in yellow coats and jackets. The actual mascot was conceived at a later, undetermined date.

HEAD COACH - PAUL JOHNSON
PAUL JOHNSON Head Coach
Paul Johnson was named Georgia Tech’s 12th head coach on December 7, 2007 after previously serving six seasons as head coach of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he led the Midshipmen to a level of success they had not seen in decades. Johnson’s first-head coaching job came at Georgia Southern, where in five seasons he led the Eagles to two
I-AA national championships. In 12 seasons overall as a head coach, Johnson owns a career record of 116-43 (.729). The only coach to win more games in his first 12 seasons as a head coach was Nebraska’s Tom Osborne.
per game, ranking fourth nationally and first in the ACC. Georgia Tech also led the ACC in total offense (372.5 ypg). Johnson, who won more games than any first-year coach in Georgia Tech history, was named the ACC Coach of the Year and the CBSSportsline.com National Coach of the Year in 2008. “Paul Johnson is the best fit, the best choice for the Georgia Tech head coaching position,” Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich said. “He will educate young men, represent Georgia Tech at the highest level, he will win football games and play for championships.” Prior to Johnson’s arrival in Atlanta, he earned unprecedented success at Navy. Johnson coached six years at Navy, compiling a 45-29 record. He took over a Navy football program that was coming off the worst two-year span in its 123-year history (1-20) and had recorded just two winning seasons in the last 20 years. After a 2-10 mark in Johnson’s first year, the Midshipmen achieved what many thought was no longer possible at an Academy. Johnson brought the Midshipmen back into the national spotlight with a 43-19 (.694) record over the last fourplus years.
Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Sports Illustrated projected Georgia Tech to finish 3-9 and the ACC media picked the Yellow Jackets to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. However, Johnson directed Tech to a 9-4 record, a share of the Coastal Division title and a Chick-fil-A Bowl berth. Johnson’s first Yellow Jacket team beat three nationally-ranked opponents - Florida State, Miami and Georgia - over the final four As a Head Coach games of the regular season. The Season School win over Georgia snapped a seven1997 Georgia Southern year losing skid to Tech’s in-state Southern Conference Champions rival.

Almost as soon as Johnson was hired, the pundits questioned if Johnson’s option-based spread offense would work on the ACC level. Those questions came even though Navy racked up mind-numbing offensive numbers, leading the NCAA in rushing three straight years from 2005 to 2007, mostly against ACC and other BCS-level competition. Johnson quieted those critics almost as soon as the 2008 season kickedoff and certainly after Tech closed the regular season by combining for 86 points and 881 rushing yards in games against nationally-ranked Miami and Georgia. The Yellow Jackets, with freshmen and sophomores manning every skill position and behind a patch-work offensive line, averaged 273.2 rushing yards 24

HEAD COACH - PAUL JOHNSON
Before arriving at Annapolis, Johnson served as head coach at Georgia Southern from 1997 to 2001. At Georgia Southern, Johnson posted a 62-10 (.861) record, won two straight I-AA National Championships (1999 and 2000), ďŹ ve consecutive Southern Conference Championships and was named the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year four straight years (1997-2000).

After Johnson took over as head coach at Georgia Southern in 1997, he returned the Eagle program to national prominence statistically and in the won-lost ledger. In addition to Georgia Southern’s 62-10 mark, the Eagles scored 2,855 points (39.7 points per game), picked up 25,941 rushing yards (360.3 yards per game), 7,816 passing yards (108.6 yards per game) and 33,757 total yards (468.8 yards per game). GSU scored 380 touchdowns in the Johnson Era, an average of 5.3 per game. The Eagles’ scoring margin under Johnson was +21.5 (39.7-18.5).
HEAD COACH
Johnson picked up a milestone victory in the 2000 I-AA National Championship Game against Montana. Not only did the 27-25 victory give Georgia Southern its second straight national title, but it was also Johnson’s 50th career win in four seasons. Only three other coaches in the history of Division I football won 50 or more games in four seasons -- Walter Camp (18881891, 54-2 at Yale), George Woodruff (1892-1895, 53-4 at Penn) and Bob Pruett (1996-99, 50-4 at Marshall). Johnson was previously Navy’s offensive coordinator in 1995 and 1996 and his spread offense made an immediate impact, breaking ďŹ ve school records during the Mids’ ďŹ ve-win season in 1995. Prior to joining the Navy staff, Johnson spent eight seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Hawai’i (1987-94). He helped guide the Rainbows to their ďŹ rst Western Athletic Conference title and their ďŹ rst bowl appearance, coordinating an explosive offense that broke or equaled more than 160 school records. After ďŹ rst arriving at Georgia Southern in 1983 as defensive line coach, Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1985. Under his tutelage, record-setting quarterback Tracy Ham and the Eagle offense re-wrote the school record book while averaging 435 total yards and 36 points per contest. Georgia Southern rolled to a combined 26-4 record and captured a pair of I-AA titles in 1985-86. Johnson’s coaching career began when he was offensive coordinator and line coach at his alma mater, Avery County (N.C.) High School, in 1979-80. He accepted the offensive coordinator’s position at Lees-McRae Junior College in 1981, leading his offensive unit to 26

Is it hard for you to find Georgia Tech gear, even in Atlanta stores? Tired of seeing a sea of red, light blue, and orange everywhere you look? It’s time to tell retailers
“ “
IW WANT MY GT WA ANT AN NT M YG T!
” ”
I Want My GT is here to spread Georgia Tech pride throughout the state. We want more retailers to carry officially licensed Georgia Tech merchandise so every Yellow Jacket fan can show their pride. Let’s all come together and start requesting that retailers stock our stuff. Go to www.iwantmygt.com to download and print additional I Want My GT cards. Next time you visit a retailer that does not carry Georgia Tech merchandise, be sure to give them an I Want My GT card. And don’t forget to sign the I Want My GT pledge. The more fans that sign the pledge the more retailers know we want our GT!
SHOW YOUR YELLOW JACKET PRIDE ! ®
It’s the second year that Georgia Tech students and fans will be able to purchase an official Student & Fan T-shirt to wear at home football games. The theme for 2009 is Full Steam Ahead. The official T-shirt will be sold at the Georgia Tech Bookstore @ Barnes & Noble and Burdell’s for $15, with $5 from each purchase supporting a student life initiative fund. The official T-shirt will be available in early July.
Wear the official 2009 Student & Fan T-shirt this year and help flood Bobby Dodd Stadium with Yellow Jacket pride! ®

RADIO AFFILIATES
The radio broadcast team for Yellow Jacket football is headlined by play-by-play announcer Wes Durham, the Voice of the Yellow Jackets since 1995. Durham, who also serves as Director of Broadcasting WES DURHAM for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association, is a four-time selection as the Sportscaster of the Year in the state of Georgia and the recipient of the “Furman Bisher Award” from the Atlanta Sports Council. He is also the radio voice of the Atlanta Falcons. Joining Durham in the booth is former Rambling Wreck and NFL quarterback, Rick Strom, who enters his fifth season on air and second in the booth. Jeff Woolverton of 790 AM “The Zone” will return for his second year as the broadcast team’s sideline reporter. Co-host of “Brandon (Adams) and Woolvey” weekdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Woolverton has had an association with ISP since joining the 790 team. In 2007, he hosted a weekly Georgia Tech football show live from Fox Sports Grill. The football broadcast team also includes veteran engineer and producer Miller Pope along with long-time spotters Al Ciraldo, Jr., and Tommy Barber. Following each game, Wes Durham will interview key players and coaches, and fans will get statistics and scores on “The Locker Room Show.” The Paul Johnson Radio Show, the popular weekly call-in show hosted by Fox Sports Grill in Atlantic Station, will air 13 weeks beginning August 26th on 11 radio stations throughout Georgia.
