WELCOME LETTER FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS MIKE BOBINSKI
DEAR GEORGIA TECH FANS:
W
elcome to Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field,
one of the nation’s most unique and beautiful college football settings.
This is a special season — the 100th anniversary of competition on Grant
Field — and we’re grateful that you’ll be part of it. We’ll highlight the memorable moments, unforgettable teams and remarkable players and coaches from those 100 years with a special celebration at our Sept. 26 Thursday night game against Virginia Tech. Many of our former All-Americans will
Mike Bobinski, Director of Athletics
be in attendance that evening and you won’t want to miss it. At each home game, your safety, comfort and convenience are our primary concerns. This fan guide is intended to provide information about policies, procedures and services available to you when attending games on campus. I hope you’ll take the time to review it prior to your visit as it should answer many of your questions about game-day activities. Speaking of gameday, I’m confident you’ll enjoy Yellow Jacket football this season as we combine head coach Paul Johnson’s high-powered offense with an aggressive defensive scheme under new coordinator Ted Roof. Our home schedule is full of opportunity for significant wins, as we host division rivals North Carolina and Virginia Tech in a six-day stretch in September. ACC newcomers Pittsburgh and Syracuse will also come to Grant Field, and we end the regular season with arch-rival Georgia. As I begin my first full year at Georgia Tech, I’d like to thank you for your support of our football program. A defining characteristic of the very best football programs in the country is tremendous fan energy and enthusiasm. Our players deserve nothing less, and I appreciate all you do to create a great college football environment in Bobby Dodd Stadium. I look forward to seeing you on campus and please know that we want your visit to be safe and enjoyable. If you have any questions, concerns or need assistance of any type, please contact a member of our game-day staff. Thank you and Go Jackets! Sincerely,

HEAD COACH PAUL JOHNSON IN HIS SIXTH YEAR AT GEORGIA TECH
ACCOMPLISHMENTS at Georgia Tech
P
aul Johnson, who has led Georgia Tech to five bowl games and two ACC Championship Game appearances while breaking records with his spread option offense, enters his sixth year with the Yellow Jackets and his 16th year overall as a head coach. The only person named ACC Coach of the Year in his first two seasons in the league, Johnson has compiled a record of 40-26 in five seasons on the Flats. Johnson won more games in his first five seasons than any coach in Georgia Tech history. During the last five seasons combined, only Virginia Tech has won more ACC games than Johnson’s Yellow Jackets. In 15 years overall as a head coach, with previous stops at Georgia Southern and Navy, Johnson owns a career record of 147-65. Only 13 active FBS coaches have won more games and only 12 coaches have won at a higher percentage. The mastermind behind Georgia Tech’s highoctane spread option offense, Johnson’s teams have ranked in the top four nationally in rushing offense each of the last five seasons. Since 2008, Georgia Tech has rushed for more yards than any team in college football. During the past five seasons combined, the Yellow Jackets have rushed for more than 20,000 yards — or the equivalent of 11.4 miles. Last season Georgia Tech struggled to a 2-4 start, which included a pair of heart-breaking overtime losses to ACC Coastal Division rivals Virginia Tech and Miami. But the Yellow Jackets turned it around the second half of the season, erupting for 68 points at North Carolina en route to winning four straight conference games. By the time the dust cleared in late November, Tech was crowned

Coastal Division champion and played in the ACC Championship Game. Statistically, the Yellow Jackets produced more yards of total offense and rushed for more yards than any team in school history, and averaged a school-record 40.0 points per game in conference play. The 7-7 season culminated with an upset win over Southern California, 21-7, in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. In 2011, Georgia Tech exceeded all expectations. After being picked to finish fourth in the ACC Coastal Division, the Yellow Jackets went 85, 5-3 in the ACC, and played in a bowl game for the 15th consecutive season. With just 10 scholarship seniors on the roster, Tech bolted to a 6-0 start, setting school, ACC and NCAA records for offense along the way, and rising to as high as 13th in the national polls. In October, the Jackets handed sixth-ranked and eventual ACC champion Clemson a 31-17 loss in Bobby Dodd Stadium, a win that eventually helped Tech earn a bid to the Hyundai Sun Bowl. In 2010, the Yellow Jackets — who lost four juniors to the 2010 NFL Draft and played the final four games without injured quarterback Joshua Nesbitt — finished 4-4 in the ACC and led the nation in rushing offense for the first time in school history. Two Yellow Jackets — senior center Sean Bedford and senior running back Anthony Allen — were named first-team All-ACC in 2010. The 2009 season was one of the most memorable in Yellow Jacket history despite fielding one of the youngest rosters in college football (just six scholarship seniors). After a mid-September loss at nationally-ranked Miami when the Yellow Jackets played their third game in a 12-day span, Tech reeled off eight consecutive victories including a 5-0 record in October when it played four road games. A convincing 4910 win at Duke on Nov. 14, clinched the ACC Coastal Division crown, then Tech defeated Clemson for a second time, this time in the ACC Championship Game in Tampa, Fla. That game was later vacated due to NCAA sanctions. Tech, which reached a national ranking as high as seventh, played in the FedEx Orange Bowl, its first appearance in a major bowl game since 1962. 8 RAMBLINWRECK.COM
Along the way, the Yellow Jackets rolled up mindboggling numbers on offense, ranking second nationally in rushing offense (295.4 ypg) and third in time of possession (33:49). Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Sports Illustrated projected Georgia Tech to finish 3-9 and the ACC media picked the Yellow Jackets to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. However, Johnson directed Tech to a 9-4 record, a share of the Coastal Division title and a Chick-fil-A Bowl berth. Johnson’s first Yellow Jacket team beat three nationallyranked opponents — Florida State, Miami and Georgia — during the final four games of the regular season. The win over Georgia snapped a sevengame losing streak to Tech’s in-state rival. Johnson’s first season at Georgia Tech was remarkable for a number of reasons. Not only did he and his staff install completely new offensive and defensive schemes, but Johnson inherited one of the nation’s youngest rosters, which included 76 freshmen and sophomores. The last one-third of the season, 16 of Tech’s 22 starters were freshmen or sophomores. He also took over a program low in scholarship numbers, well below the maximum of 85, the lingering effects of distant NCAA penalties. The 2008 team also suffered more than its share of injuries. Twelve opening-day starters combined to miss 31 games because of injuries. In a September road game at defending ACC champion Virginia Tech, the Jackets started a walk-on freshman at wide receiver. A few weeks later, Tech started its third-string quarterback as the result of injuries to starter Joshua Nesbitt and back-up Jaybo Shaw. Almost as soon as Johnson was hired, the pundits questioned if Johnson’s option-based spread offense would work on the BCS level. Those questions came even though Navy had racked up mind-numbing offensive numbers, leading the NCAA in rushing three straight years from 200507, mostly against ACC and other BCS-level competition. Johnson, a native of Newland, N.C., earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Western Carolina in 1979 and a master’s degree in health and physical education from Appalachian State in 1982. He and wife, Susan, are the parents of a daughter, Kaitlyn.

DID YOU KNOW? GAME DAY FUN FACTS
• The Rambling Wreck has been leading the football team onto the field for every home game since it made its first trip out of the tunnel against Rice on Sept. 30, 1961. • Buzz, our beloved mascot, made his first appearance on the sidelines of Bobby Dodd Stadium on Oct. 11, 1980, vs. Tennessee. One of America’s favorite mascots, Buzz has been an energetic part of our game-day experience since and you’ll never catch him standing still! • Yellow Jacket Alley starts two and a half hours prior to kickoff before each home football game. A tradition that dates back to 1996, Yellow Jacket Alley is a great way to show support of our team and get excited for kickoff. • For the first time in 2012, the GTAA introduced live bands at Wreckfest prior to each home game. Fans of all ages can enjoy live music from some of the South’s biggest upand-coming names in music. • Think tailgating on campus is difficult? It’s not! Try parking in any of the on campus open-air lots, where we encourage fans to have a good time before kickoff. Popular tailgating spots include: The Varsity and McCamish lots, around Yellow Jacket Alley and the areas near the student center. • Hey Freshmen ... hands off the Wreck! Freshmen who touch the Wreck their first year of school are said to be cursed with bad luck for their college career. • The Buzz-weiser song was first played in 1970 after Bobby Dodd requested that the band refrain from playing “Dixie” during sporting events. It is played by the band every game between the third and fourth quarter. 20 RAMBLINWRECK.COM
• One the most famous icons to appear in a Tech Cheerleading uniform is Marilyn Monroe. She appeared in a cheerleading sweater on the cover of Look magazine in September 1952. She also appeared on the football program that season. • All Yellow Jacket fans under the age of 12 are eligible to join our Junior Jackets Fan Club! Visit RamblinWreck.com for all the details on how to become a Junior Jacket. • When the GT Band plays “The Horse” it signifies the conclusion of any sporting event. A fun and unique tradition, fans are encouraged to stick around and watch and even participate with the band after each game. • The GT Student group, the Goldfellas, originated in the 1998 Homecoming game against Virginia. Each member of the group selects his own signature face paint design and keeps that design until he graduates. The paint scheme is then retired, never again to be duplicated.

GRANT FIELD AT BOBBY DODD STADIUM
G
eorgia Tech’s storied football facility has been a cornerstone of college football for 100 years. Cozily nestled amid Atlanta’s skyscrapers, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field is easily one of the nation’s most unique settings for college football. Originally built in 1913 by members of the Georgia Tech student body, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field is the oldest on-campus stadium in NCAA Division I-A (FBS). This fall, Georgia Tech celebrates the 100th anniversary of Grant Field, and a variety of events are planned for the game vs. Virginia Tech on Thursday night, Sept. 26. Georgia Tech’s football facility was known as Grant Field until April 1988, when the Georgia State Board of Regents voted to add the name Bobby Dodd Stadium in honor of the legendary coach who guided the Rambling Wreck to its most illustrious football era. A member of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, Dodd compiled a 165-64-8 record from 1945-66, and tutored 21 All-Americans as he led Tech to 13 bowl trips during his 22-year stay as head coach. Dodd served as Tech’s director of athletics from 1951-76 and then worked as a consultant for the alumni association until his death in 1988 for a 57-year association with the Institute. The name change was the first for the facility since it was named Hugh Inman Grant Field in 1914 after a gift from John W. Grant, a member of the Tech Board of Trustees and a well-known Atlanta merchant. The Grant family did not give the land on which Grant Field is built. However, they did give the initial $15,000 used in 1913 to build the first permanent concrete stands on the west side of the field. In gratitude for the gift, the Board of Trustees named the field Hugh Inman Grant Field in memory of Grant’s deceased son.
22 RAMBLINWRECK.COM
The students who built Grant Field more than 100 years ago wouldn’t recognize the home of Georgia Tech football if they saw it now. Not only has the skyline around the stadium changed dramatically, but the facility has steadily grown and improved during its rich history. Tech actually began playing football on this site in 1905, but in 1913, the original concrete West Stands were built by Tech students and seated 5,600. In the 100 autumns since Grant Field was erected, legends from Clint Castleberry to George Morris to Joe Hamilton to Calvin Johnson have played here, and Paul Johnson joins coaching giants such as John Heisman and Dodd in patrolling the Grant Field sideline. Four national title teams and 15 conference champions have showcased their skills on the Flats, and Grant Field was the site of one of the most famous games played, Tech’s 222-0 win over Cumberland in 1916. Today’s Bobby Dodd Stadium seats 55,000 fans in a modern, comfortable facility that embraces the tradition that has made Tech’s venerable stadium a cornerstone of college football for nearly a century.

TECH TRADITIONS RAMBLIN’ WRECK FIGHT SONG
T
he Georgia Tech fight song grew out of an old folk ballad, “The Sons of the Gamboliers.” Howard D. Cutter, a member of Tech’s first graduating class (Mechanical Engineering, 1892), wrote in the November-December 1942 issue of the Georgia Tech Alumnus that the “Ramblin’ Wreck” had its origins during the first two years after Tech opened in 1888, inspired when the entire student body traveled to Athens to see Tech’s baseball team defeat Georgia. By the early 1900s, “Ramblin’ Wreck” was an established tradition. The earliest existing published version of the song appeared in the Blueprint, the Institute’s yearbook, in 1908. In 1910, Michael A. Greenblatt, Tech’s first bandmaster, discovered the band playing “Ramblin’ Wreck” to the tune of “Sons of the Gamboliers,” and made his first arrangement of the song in the form of a handwritten manuscript. When Frank Roman succeeded Greenblatt as bandmaster in 1911, he wrote a new adaptation of “Ramblin’ Wreck” accompanied by many trumpet flourishes, that became nationally known. His is the version that continues to be popular today. The fame of the song spread to such proportions
that in 1959 it was sung by Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev at their historic face-to-face meeting in Moscow. In 1984, the law firm of Newton, Hopkins & Ormsby investigated the copyright of “Ramblin’ Wreck” and found that a number of people have had various versions of the song copyrighted. The original version of the song is in the public domain and can be played without payment of royalties. WHITE AND GOLD
In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a game was scheduled between Auburn and Georgia. A rivalry was already established in baseball between Tech and Georgia, so Tech students were invited to the game to cheer, of course, for Auburn. The students appointed a committee to recommend colors to be worn and cheers to be used at the game. The committee suggested white and gold, and about 200 students attended wearing those colors. In 1893, when Georgia Tech’s football team played Georgia for the first time, a group of young women from the Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls attended the game to cheer for Tech, dressed in white and gold.
LYRICS I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer, A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer, Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear, I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer. Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold, And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold. But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do. He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used to do. Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three
thousand pounds, A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around. I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near. I'm a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.
CHEER
Oh well it’s up with the White and Gold Down with the Red and Black Georgia Tech is out for the victory We’ll drop the battle axe on Georgia’s head When we meet her, our team is sure to beat her Down on the old farm there will be no sound Till our bow-wows rip through the air When the battle is over, Georgia’s team will be found With the Yellow Jackets swarming around. MCCAMISH PAVILION
T
he re-building of Georgia Tech’s basketball program under head coach Brian Gregory coincides with the dawning of a new era in Yellow Jackets’ basketball, marked by the opening of McCamish Pavilion last year. Occupying the same footprint on the corner of 10th and Fowler Streets as the historic Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which hosted Tech basketball games for 55 years and saw the Yellow Jackets post a record of 556-194, McCamish Pavilion opened its doors Nov. 9, 2012, when the Tech men hosted Tulane. It was the first of four sellouts for the Yellow Jackets, who went on to post an 11-6 mark in their first season in the venue and played before an average of 7,365 — approximately 2,400 more per game than the previous season. McCamish Pavilion drew raves from friend and foe alike in its inaugural season, from its state-of-the-art audio-visual technology to the cozy and intimate, but loud atmosphere. The first season of basketball in the new facility included victories over state-rival Georgia and big Atlantic Coast Conference wins over postseason teams Maryland and Virginia. The arena footprint has expanded by about 30,000 square feet, and the circular seating bowl was demolished and replaced with a rectangular bowl along with an upper deck. The most obvious difference is that the walls
32 RAMBLINWRECK.COM
separating the concourse and the bowl were removed, meaning that the floor is visible from almost every point in the concourse. The familiar domed roof and the 32 steel support beams remain, but the McCamish interior looks nothing like the old Thrillerdome. Ground was broken for the construction of Tech’s new on-campus arena on May 5, 2011, and 18 months later, the Yellow Jackets had a state-ofthe-art building with 8,600 seats and a luxurious club area, which provides a cozy view of the court. The lower level seating bowl has 6,935 seats, and the new balcony level seating has 1,665 seats. The building features a new center-hung scoreboard, with video screens on four sides and a circular message board underneath. The balcony level has a 360-degree ribbon board for messaging and graphics. The lighting system, similar to those at Madison Square Garden and Staples Center in Los Angeles, will illuminate the court while leaving the stands darkened, creating a theatre-like feel to games.
