History Early Years

Georgia Tech first fielded a swim team in 1918-19, when the first tryout was held at the city Y.M.C.A and about 50 men came out. According to the Blueprint, the fledgling squad featured “some of the fastest water splashers that the South has ever turned out and one that would make any Eastern college hustle to beat.” The team was captained by G.R. Fraser, described as the best swimmer in the South and holder of the Southern record in both the 220-yard swim and the 50-yard swim. Tech’s first swim meet was on the road against the Clemson Tigers. In addition to Fraser, the first Tech team included Weiss, Scott, Carson, Evans and Owns, who returned with a 50 to 19 victory. Fraser swam the 220 yards in the 2:50.00, cutting four seconds off his own Southern record. The program enjoyed success against Southern competition thoughout the 1920s. In 1927, Tech defeated all Southern opposition and made a good showing against two strong eastern teams. The Jackets broke into prominence by forcing the famous Brooklyn Y team to the limit, but fell 46 to 16. Two days later, Yale handed the Jackets the short end of a 46 to 16 score. In 2003-04, the Yellow Jackets gave birth to a brand new renovated Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Tech opened the enclosed Olympic pool by hosting NC State on Oct. 25, 2003. With the home fans cheering them on, the Rambling Wrecks swam past the visiting Wolfpack, 132-107 (men) and 152-91 (women).

Early Champions

The Yellow Jacket tankmen, despite the

lack of an on-campus facility, won 10straight unofficial South championships from 1926-35. In 1927, Dave Young tied the national intercollegiate record in the 150-yard backstroke in 1:43.20. Representing Tech in the national intercollegiate, Young set a new record of 1:46.10 seconds and in the finals established a new record of 1:44.00, finishing four seconds ahead of Spindle of Michigan to win Tech’s only national championship in swimming. He also earned All-American honors with a second-place finish in the 220-yard free style.

Kenneth Thrash, Sr.

(1932-35)

After playing football at Tech, Kenneth Thrash, Sr., took over the swimming reigns and led the Jackets to four straight Southern Conference Championships from 1932-35. Almost as impressive as five consecutive conference titles, Thrash only tasted defeat once in dual meets, finishing with an astounding record of 24-1. His winning percentage of 0.960 is the best alltime in school history. As a former football player for the Rambling Wrecks (1926-28), Thrash helped the Yellow Jackets win two conference titles (1927-28) and a national championship in 1928.

Fred Lanoue

(1936-64)

Fred Lanoue, a graduate of Springfield College and former New England diving champion, began working with the Tech swimmers in 1936 and became the Yellow Jackets’ full time head coach in 1938 when the Tech pool was completed. Under Lanoue’s guidance, Tech won four Southeastern Conference championships in nine years, the first in 1942 and then three in a row in 1948, 1949 and 1950. Lanoue coached the Jackets for 27 years, stepping down after the 1964 season.

Herb McAuley

(1965-87)

The star of the 1942 SEC championship

squad was Herb McAuley, who won the SEC 220 and 440 freestyle championships that year. McAuley had his schooling interrupted by World War II, serving in the Army Signal Corps before graduating from Tech with a degree in electrical engineering in 1947. Upon graduation, he joined the Yellow Jacket staff as assistant coach under Lanoue, a position he held for 17 years. McAuley succeeded Lanoue as head coach for the 1965 season. He coached the Jackets for 23 seasons, compiling a record of 169-144-1. He was inducted into the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame in 1982. Tech competed in its first ACC Championships meet in 1980. The program took a one-year giatus upon McAuley’s retirement

in 1987, which signaled the end of a 40year stint on the Tech coaching staff.

The swimming program resumed under Brad Legman in 1988-89. In Lehman’s first year, senior Tim Halligan earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors following his second-place finish in the 200 butterfly. Halligan qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event, finishing 21st. Legman coached the team for three seasons, amassing an overall record of 19-13. Bill Humber took over the Tech program in 1991-92. In 1993, he guided the Jackets to their then-best showing at the ACC Championships with the sixth-place finish and a then school-record point total of 198. In 1994, diver Brandon Lumm won the first ACC Championship in the program’s history with his victory in the three-meter event. He earned All-ACC recognition that year and Bill Humber tallied a dual meet record of 38-45 during his six-year tenure at Georgia Tech.

In August 1997, Tech hired Seth Baron to

take the helm of the men’s swimming and diving program. The Jackets’ women’s program devuted in 2001-02, and Baron took on the combined program. Baron, formerly an assistant coach at South Carolina and Auburn, also previously worked with the U.S. National Swim Team and was the head coach for the U.S. squad at the 1997 and 2001 World Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel. Under Baron’s direction, the Tech men finished in the top five at the ACC Championships in five consecutive seasons, including a third-place finish in his final season as head coach in 2005. Tech finished 32nd at the 2005 NCAA Championships, cracking the Top 35 for the fifth straight year. In just four seasons of existence, the women’s program tallied a 33rd-place

History finish at the 2004 NCAA Championships and crowned its first All-American in Vesna Stojanovska. The Jackets posted three consecutive sixth-place finished at the ACC meet, tallying a program-best 285.6 points last season. The Jackets also qualified two swimmers for the 2005 NCAA Championships for the first time in program history; Stojanovska and the freshman Elizabeth Stowe. Junior Sam Morgan qualified for his third consecutive NCAA meet after winning his first ACC title in the mile at the 2006 ACC meet, hosted in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Morgan Garnered his second straight All-American honors, finishing 14th in the mile. Stojanovska advanced to her second straight NCAA meet in 2005, after becoming the first women’s athlete to win an ACC title, doing so in the 200 fly. Stowe garnered All-ACC honors in the mile, making her and Stojanovska the first all=conference tandem at the conference championship. Along with collegiate accomplishments, the Tech combined program witnessed its first two Olympians in 2004 as Stojanovska (Macedonia) and incoming freshman Onur Uras (Turkey) competed at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Joining them in Athens were former men’s swimming standouts Leo Salinas (Mexico) and volunteer coach Jorge Oliver (Puerto Rico). Tech recorded its most successful season to date in 2001-02. Tech’s men tallied 580.5 points to finish a program-best second at the ACC Championship, as a record five Jackets earned All-ACC honors. Tech also placed 27th at the NCAA Championships, led by Shilo Ayalon’s eighth-place finish in the 1650 free. He earned All-American accolades for the second consecutive season. In 2000-01, the Yellow Jackets placed third at the ACC Championships, scoring 434.50 points. Four swimmers earned AllACC accolades: Shilo Ayalon, David Laitala, Scott Lenyk and Tomonori Tsuki. Tech also scored its first points in NCAA competition in 2001. Ayalon placed11th in the 1650 free, while Tsuji finished 13th in the 200 breast to become the program’s first All-Americans. The Jackets went 11-3 in dual-meet competition, and 16 school records were established, led by Ayalon’s four marks. In 2000, Baron and the Yellow Jackets finished the regular season with a 5-6 dual-meet record. Laitala became the first Yellow Jacket swimmer in 11 years to earn All-ACC recognition, placing second in the 100 butterfly at the ACC Championships.

In his first season at Tech, Baron guided the team to a 4-7 dual-meet record and a secenth-place finish in the ACC Championships. As an athlete, Baron also competed for the U.S. National Team, winning 10 gold medals in international competitions, including the 1985 World Maccabiah Games and the 1983 Pan Am MAccabiah Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He participated in the U.S. Olympic Triols in 1984 and qualified for the 1988 Trials.

Stu Wilson

(2005-2009)

Stu Wilson was named men’s and women’s swimming and diving head coach on June 8, 2005. In his seven years with the Tech program, Wilson guided seven different swimmers to the NCAA Championships and tutored three Atlantic Coach Conference champions. In 2008-09, Wilson led the women’s team to its highest finish at the NCAA Championship in school history and both the men’s and women’s teams combined to break 19 school record throughout the course ot the season. Seven Yelloow Jackets earned All-ACC honors in 2007-08, while seven student-athletes were named to the ACC All-Academic team. Junior Mickey Malul was an ACC champion in the 100-breast as the men’s team finished fourth at the ACC Championships. Three swimmers and two divers went to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio and senior Elizabeth Stowe placed 28th in the mile as the Jackets finished 30th in the nation. Agatha Kwasnik and Noah Copeland also represented Tech along with divers Stephanie England and Hannah Krimm. Sam Morgan ended his career as a twotime All-American in the 1650-yard freestyle and became the first Yellow Jacket to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet in four consecutive seasons under Wilson’s guidance. In his first season as head coach in 200506, Wilson led the Jackets to their fourth straight top-five finish in the ACC, tallying a fourth-place finish at the 2006 ACC Championships, in College Park, MD. Tech boasted one ACC champion and Morgan garnered all-conference honors in the mile for the second straight season. Wilson helped the Yellow Jacket men to four consecutive top-35 finishes at the NCAA Championships, posting a 33rd-place finish at the 2006 Men’s NCAA Champion-

ships, hosted by Georgia Tech. Tech sent four swimmers to the 2005 NCAA Championships, the second most in school history, and five of the second AllAmerican honors earned by Yellow Jackets have came during Wilson’s tenure. Former Tech standout Shilo Ayalon and Morgan both garnered All-American honors under Wilson’s tutelage. Ayalon holds four school records and was named ACC Most Valuable Performer that the 2003 ACC Championships. In 2006, Rob Miller, Morgan and Elizabeth Stowe all qualified for the NCAA Championships under Wilson’s guidance. Morgan won his first ACC title in the men’s 1650yard freestyle and Miller finished fifth. Stowe posted a third-place finish in the women’s 1650 free to earn All-ACC honors. All three clocked lifetime-best times in their respective events for Yellow Jackets. Prior to joining the Yellow Jacket staff in 2002, Wilson spent 11 years with nationally-prominent club team Swim Atlanta from 1990-2001, serving as the team’s Head Senior Coach for his last four seasons there. In this position, he planned and implemented strength and conditioning programs for swimmers age 12-and-over. He also handled administrative duties, including fundraising, travel arrangements, public relations and record-keeping. He worked as a head age group coach with Swim Atlanta from 1990-98. Wilson coached several successful swimmers at Swim Atlanta, including 2004 U.S. Olympian Amanda Weir, who set national age-group records (11-12 and 13-14) in the 50 free. Additionally, he mentored swimmers that posted more than 50 national top-16 age-group performances. As an athlete, Wilson competed at the University of Georgia from 1984-88, reaching the finals of the SEC Championships in the 200 and 500 free in each of his last three seasons. He was an NCAA qualified in the 400 free relay and held the school record in the 200 free at one time. Wilson also qualified for U.S. Nationals in his final six seasons of competitive swimming. A native of Atlanta, Wilson, 42, graduated from Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1989. He married the former Meg Gordon in the summer of 2008 and the couple resides in Atlanta.

Courtney Shealy Hart

Head Coach Second Season (Fourth overall at Tech) Georgia, 2001 Courtney Shealy Hart, a Georgia Tech assistant coach for two years, was named head coach of the Yellow Jackets’ swimming programs on April 30, 2009. Shealy Hart is the eighth head coach in the history of the program. In her first year as the head of the swimming and diving program in 2009-10, Shealy Hart led the men’s team to a fifth place performance and the women’s team to a ninth place showing at the ACC Championships. The men’s meet was highlighted by three first place finishes by Gal Nevo while the women broke four school records. Nevo’s success continued into the NCAA Championships where Hart helped the senior to All-American status in each of his races, a runner-up finish up in the 400-IM for the second-straight season, and a school record time in the 200-Fly in his final race as a Yellow Jacket to give Tech a 23rd finish at the event. In two seasons as an assistant coach, Shealy Hart worked primarily with the middle distance free and stroke group and also served as recruiting coordinator. The Georgia Tech swimming programs enjoyed unprecedented success in the two year’s since Shealy Hart’s arrival and she has worked with multiple NCAA participants. In 2007-08, the women’s team finished 30th at the NCAA Championships for the best finish in program history. In 2008-09, the men’s squad turned in its best NCAA effort with a 19thplace finish. Nevo was an All-American in both the 200-IM and 400-IM as well as being named ACC Swimmer of the Year. His mark in the 400-IM was the second-fastest in NCAA history and third-fastest in the world. Nigel Plummer was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, the first time a Georgia Tech swimmer earned either swimmer or freshman of the year awards in school history. All told, 24 school records were bro-

ken during the 2008-09 season and a school-record nine men’s swimmers participated in the NCAA Championships. Shealy Hart spent one season (2006-07) as an assistant coach at North Florida prior to arriving on The Flats. She helped guide North Florida to a fifth-place finish at the Pacific Coast Swimming Conference Championships and led nine individuals to top-16 finishes at the meet. Shealy Hart guided one athlete to a top-eight finish in the conference championship. Before heading into the coaching scene, Shealy Hart participated in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games for the United States. She took home a pair of gold medals in Sydney, Australia, in the 400meter medley relay and 400-meter freestyle relay. Shealy Hart also competed on the international scene in the Pan-American Games (1999, 2003), Pan Pacific (2002) and the United States World Cup Teams (2000-04). At the University of Georgia, Shealy Hart led the Bulldogs to NCAA team championships in 1999 and 2000. She was named the 2000 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year after capturing individual national titles in the 50-free, 100-free and 100-back. She also captured NCAA titles as a member of the 400free relay and 400-medley relay teams. She finished her NCAA career with 26 All-America honors the most in UGA history, plus two more honorable mention citations. Shealy Hart won nine individual Southeastern Conference titles, 10 SEC relay crowns and set five conference records. She was named SEC Female Swimmer of the Year in 2000. Shealy Hart played volleyball for the Bulldogs and lettered from 1997-99. She was named the team’s most valuable player in 1998 and was the first NCAA Division I female student-athlete to compete in two sports on the same day, accomplishing that feat three times at Georgia. After graduating from Georgia in 2001 cum laude with a degree in sports studies/communications, Shealy Hart worked as a motivational speaker for the NCAA, Coca-Cola, Healthsouth and Arby’s, and served as the director of the Golden West Swim Lessons Program in Huntington Beach, Calif., before heading to North Florida. Shealy Hart earned her master’s degree from UGA in sports management in 2005. A native of Columbia, S.C., Shealy Hart, and her husband Justin, reside in Atlanta.

John Ames Diving Coach 10th Season Ohio, 1993

John Ames is entering his 10th season as the diving coach for the Yellow Jacket swimming and diving program. During the 2009-10 season, Ames helped two freshmen divers, Brandon Makinson and Chris Khosravi to their first ever appearances at the NCAA Zone Diving Event hosted by Tech. Makinson took 11th while Khosravi took 17th in the 3-meter dive. Khosravi went on to earn a sixth place finish in the platform dive earning the second best score by a freshman in the event. Ames also aided senior All-American Hannah Krimm to her fourth-straight Zone diving event. In 2008-09, Ames coached Michele Bertolino and Hannah Krimm, who made the finals of the 2009 NCAA Zone-B diving Championships in the one and three meter springboard dives. Also, at the 2009 ACC Championships, Krim was the highest scorer for the women’s swimming & diving teams in competition with a fifth place finish in both the one and three meter springboard. In 2008, he coached Tech’s first female diving All-American as then-sophomore Krimm finished seventh on the three-meter springboard. Krimm was also recognized as a honorable mention All-American on the one-meter board, while then-senior Stephanie England was a honorable mention All-American in the three-meter and platform events. The Tech divers accounted for all 21 of the Jackets’ total points at the NCAA Championships helping them to a 30th-place finish -- it’s highest in program history. At the 2007-08 ACC Championships, Ames led Krimm to a secondplace finish on the one-meter board, while England was second in the platform and third in the three-meter. Krimm, England and then freshman Michele Bertolino all qualified for the NCAA Zone Championship, with Krimm and England moving on to NCAAs in Columbus, Ohio. Under Ames’ tutelage, Evan Stowers became the first Tech diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2006. In the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, Stowers again made history by finishing seventh on the men’s platform, becoming the first Tech diver to garner All-America honors. In 2007, Stowers returned to the NCAA Championships, earning All-America honors for the second consecutive season.

At the 2006 ACC Championships, Stowers became just the second GT diver, first under Ames, to win an ACC championship as he captured the men’s three-meter springboard. He also became the first diver to earn All-ACC honors on both springboards Besides Stowers, Krimm and England, two other Tech divers have garnered all-conference honors under Ames’ guidance. Former men’s diving standout Paul McCarty (2001-04) earned All-ACC honors on the one-meter springboard in 2002, while former diver Tony Burkhardt accomplished that same feat at the ‘05 ACC Championships. In 2005, the women’s diving program took its first steps towards being a force at the ACC Championships, as junior Laurissa Prystaj and England both finaled on the three-meter board, making it the highest scoring event for Tech in women’s diving history. The duo of England and Krimm trumped that performance when both Yellow Jacket divers qualified for the finals in all events. The duo then took another step forward when they combined to garner All-ACC in every diving event at the 2008 conference championships, and followed that up with All-American honors. Along with his coaching duties at Tech, Ames also mentors the Atlanta Diving Association, which has quickly become the top United States Diving program in the state of Georgia. This season, his divers won three individual National Championships, while one went on to qualify for Junior World Championships. Hired in August 2001, Ames came to Tech from George Washington University and the Montgomery Dive Club, one of the largest diving programs in the nation. Prior to his stint with Montomery and George Washington, Ames served as an assistant coach with the Northern Virginia Dive Club. He also worked as a graduate assistant and diving coach at Western Illinois University. Ames graduated from Ohio University in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology after completing his collegiate diving career with the Bobcats. He earned a Master of Science degree in sport administration while at Western Illinois.

Marty Hamburger

Marty Hamburger is in his sixth season as assistant coach at Georgia Tech. Hamburger works with Alumni Relations and is in charge of fundraising while assisting with recruiting. In the pool, he works primarily with the sprint group. In the 2009-10 season, Hamburger’s sprint group had two men with NCAA “B” cuts: Nigel Plummer (50, 100-Free) and Matt Vaughan (100, 200-Breast). Plummer also contributed on three “B” cut relays: 200-Medley, 400-Free and 400-Medley. Vaughan swam breaststroke on the 200-Medley as well. The sprint group also contributed to a new school record in the women’s 200-Free Relay. Three of the women on that relay were members of Hamburger’s sprint corp: sophomore Jessie Mason and freshmen Alexis Weber and Kate Riley. Weber and Riley also swam legs on the 400-Free Relay for an NCAA “B” cut. To date, Hamburger’s sprinters have seriously impacted Tech’s Top Times lists. The 2008-09 season saw unprecedented success for Hamburger and his sprint group. The men’s team was undefeated in the 50free through the entire dual meet season. Their dominance in the event culminated with freshman Nigel Plummer’s winning the ACC Championship on his way to being selected Freshman of the Year. Sophomore Garrett Robberson was third in the 50-free at ACC’s, while senior Mauricio Sousa placed fifth. All three men applied their talents in the 200 free relay and along with senior Noah Copeland, captured the ACC Championship, setting a new ACC record in the process. Robberson recorded the second fastest relay split in ACC history as he anchored the 200 medley relay in 18.89. Mickey Malul swam the breaststroke leg of the same relay in 23.29, one of the fastest 50-breast splits in NCAA history. Malul also made his first automatic NCAA cut as he defended his 100 breaststroke title at the

ACC Championship. Malul’s swim of 52.81 lowered his own school record. Malul, Plummer, Robberson and Sousa were all part of the largest team (nine) Georgia Tech Men’s Team has ever sent to the NCAA Championship. Freshman Jessie Mason became the second fastest woman in GT history as she posted a 23.35 at the ACC Championship. Mason was a member of the school record setting 200 free relay and 200 medley relay, leading off the later in a team-leading 25.77. Lisa Pucci continued her success in the breaststroke events, posting the third fastest time in school history in the 100 at ACC’s. She also swam the breaststroke leg of the record 200 medley relay. In the 2007-08 season, Malul set a school record and win the ACC 100-breast title. Hamburger was also instrumental in helping Sousa set a school record and “B” cut in the 50-free. Under the guidance of Hamburger, Sousa and Malul were part of the recordsetting 200-medley relay team while Sousa, Jacob Kwasnik and Robberson were part of the record-setting 400-free relay team. Malul was also the 400-medley relay team that set a new school record. Lisa Pucci who was part of two record-setting relays (400-medley and 400-free) and two more (200-medley, 200-free) that recorded the second-best times in school history. In 2006-07, Hamburger helped Ryan Bishop to an All-ACC finish and an NCAA `B’ cut in the 400 IM. He was also instrumental in guiding the group of Jason Bourgeois, Jacob Kwasnik and Mauricio Sousa to the school record in the 200 freestyle relay. During his first season, Hamburger guided Bishop and Alex Williams to NCAA ‘B’ qualifying standards. Bishop clocked NCAA ‘B’ cut times in the 200 IM and 400 IM events for the Jackets. He also qualified for the championship finals of the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke for Tech at the ACC Championships. Williams posted a personal-best and first ever NCAA ‘B’ standard in the 100 breast at the ACC meet, finishing a career-best fifth in the finals. Hamburger worked with the Dynamo Swim Club from 1999-2004, charged with all aspects of daily operations, administration and marketing for the Masters program. While at Dynamo, Hamburger produced over 100 nationally-ranked, national champion and AllAmerica swimmers, four World record holders and five American record holders. Hamburger’s Dynamo Masters led the Georgia Masters team to a National Championship in 2000. Along with working with the Dynamo Swim Club, Hamburger also assisted with three-time defending NCAA men’s national champion Auburn and its Tiger Masters Swim Camp from 2000-04. He was part of the development of Master swimmers, covering topics of race strategy and developing a successful lifestyle as a competitive athlete. Hamburger has also worked with U.S. Olympic coaches Eddie Reese and Mark Schubert at the Texas Longhorn Swim Camps in Austin, prior to coming to Tech. Hamburger, a native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991. He resides in Decatur with his wife, Amanda Johnson and two sons: six-year old Ellis, and three-year old Reese.

Assistant Coach Second Season Colby College, 2006 In his first season on the Flats, DeSantis made an immediate impact with the breaststroke and IM group. Specifically, DeSantis helped Matt Vaughan to go from a non-scorer to a Top-8 finisher at the ACC Championship meet in the 100 breast, he aided Lisa Pucci record the second best 100-Breast time in Tech History and assisted Jordan Evans as she scored in three events at ACCs for the first time, establishing herself as the No. 2 all time 200-IMer and school record holder in the butterfly.

Mark Toburen

Assistant Coach Second Season NC State, 1996 Mark Toburen was named Georgia Tech Swimming and Diving Assistant Coach on August 3, 2009.

In his first season on the Flats, Toburen coached six-time All-American Gal Nevo to three ACC titles in the 200-IM, 400-IM, and 200-Fly en route to a Male ACC Swimmer of the Year award. Nevo was also the NCAA runner-up in the 400-IM and set the school record in the 200-Fly at the NCAA Championships. Toburen also assisted in coaching Heidi Hatteberg to a school record in the 200-Back, and the third-fastest time in school history in the DeSantis, a 2006 graduate of Colby College (Maine), has spent the 500-Free. Dr. G.P. “Bud” Peterson is the eleventh president of the Georgia Institute of Technology. In this capacity he oversees a top-ten public research university with more than 19,000 students and more than $500 million in sponsored funding.

Now in his fifth year as Director of Athletics, Dan Radakovich has helped take a Georgia Tech program rich in athletic tradition to a higher level of excellence and national respect.

Throughout his career, Dr. Peterson has played an active role in helping to establish the national education and research agendas, serving on numerous industry, government, and academic task forces and committees. A distinguished scientist, Dr. Peterson was selected in 2008 by President George W. Bush to serve on the National Science Board through 2014. The Board oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF) and advises the President and Congress on national policy related to science and engineering research and education

Since Radakovich arrived on The Flats in 2006, Georgia Tech has competed for conference and national championships across the board, Yellow Jacket student-athletes have excelled in the classroom and Tech’s facilities rate among the finest in the nation.

Prior to his appointment, Peterson served as Chancellor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Provost at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York from 2000 through 2006, and Program Director at the National Science Foundation for the Thermal Transport and Thermal Processing Program (19931994). He has held various positions at Texas A&M University, beginning in 1981 as an assistant professor of engineering technology and Halliburton Professor of Mechanical Engineering (1990), the College of Engineering’s Tenneco Professor, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (1993-1996), Executive Associate Dean of Engineering (1996-2000), and Associate Vice Chancellor for Engineering for the Texas A&M University System (1996-2000). Prior to his service at Texas A&M, he was a Visiting Research Scientist at NASA-Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, Associate Professor and Head of the General Engineering Technology Department at Kansas Technical Institute in Salina, Kansas (1979-1981), and taught mathematics, physics and chemistry at Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park, Kansas (1978-1979) and Wabaunsee County High School in Alma, Kansas (1977-1978). As Chancellor of the University of Colorado, Dr. Peterson led the development of a new university wide strategic plan, Flagship 2030 that defined a vision for the university for the next 20 years. In his nearly three years as Chancellor, freshman applications increased by 35%, the number of underrepresented minorities in the freshmen class increased by 38%, sponsored research increased by more than 18% and private philanthropy for the university increased by nearly 80%. As Provost at Rensselaer, he played a key role in the institutional transformation and the dramatic improvement in the quality, size and diversity of the faculty – overseeing the hiring of nearly 40% of the faculty, increasing the total number of tenured and tenure-track faculty by 20%, and improving the diversity of the tenured/tenure-track faculty by more than doubling the number of under-represented minorities and increasing the number of women by 40%. In addition, during his tenure as Provost, the quality, size and diversity of the student body increased, with the number of full-time Ph.D. students increasing by 25%. Dr. Peterson earned undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics as well as a master’s degree in engineering from Kansas State University. He earned his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. Dr. Peterson was born September 1, 1952, in San Francisco, California. He and his wife, Val, have four adult children.

Radakovich signed a new five-year contract in June of 2010. The 2009-10 academic year was one of the most successful campaigns in nearly 120 years of Georgia Tech athletics: * Yellow Jacket teams combined to produce a won-loss record of 213-80 (.727), the highest winning percentage at Georgia Tech in modern history. * Georgia Tech participated in NCAA postseason play and/or bowl games in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball and golf. * Tech was the only school in the country to play in a BCS bowl game (Orange Bowl), host an NCAA baseball regional and advance to the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. * The Yellow Jackets won four ACC championships - in football, golf, softball and women’s tennis. * Academically, Georgia Tech’s Academic Progress Report (APR) scores improved significantly for the third consecutive year. Five Yellow Jacket teams were recognized nationally by the NCAA for producing an APR score that ranked among the top 10 percent in each respective sport. * The football team won the ACC championship outright for the first time since 1990, played in a bowl game for the 13th straight year, two Yellow Jackets were taken in the first round of the NFL draft, and Paul Johnson became the first coach ever to be named ACC Coach of the Year in his first two seasons in the conference. * The men’s and women’s basketball teams both won 23 games and both earned NCAA Tournament bids. Coach Paul Hewitt’s team advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament. * The baseball and softball teams both earned top-eight national seeds and hosted NCAA regionals. Women’s tennis also hosted NCAA 1st- and 2nd-round matches. * The baseball team produced a school record-tying 10 draft picks. * The ACC champion golf team advanced to the final eight of the NCAA championships. * The volleyball team, under first-year coach Tonya Johnson, earned the program’s first NCAA bid since 2004. * Men’s swimming (Gal Nevo) and men’s track and field (Alphonso Jordan and Steve Marcelle) produced some of the most successful and most decorated athletes in those sports’ history at Tech. A graduate of Center High School near Aliquippa, Pa., and a member of its Alumni Hall of Fame, Radakovich, 52, became a football letterwinner and student coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1980 with a bachelor of science degree in finance. He was enshrined into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame in April, 2008, and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni from IUP in March, 2009. Radakovich added a master’s degree in business administration from Miami (FL) in 1982. He also completed the Sports Management Institute’s executive education program in 1992. He is married to the former Marcie McDonald, and the couple has two children, Christian (20) and Grant (16). Christian is a junior Industrial Engineering major at Georgia Tech.

Theresa Wenzel enters her fifth season as the Senior Woman’s Administrator at Georgia Tech and also holds the title of Associate Director of Athletics. She oversees women’s basketball, volleyball, softball, golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s cross country and the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in her role. Wenzel is the athletic department non-academic liaison to the Office of Student Affairs. She is also a member of various committees including the Georgia Tech Women’s Resource Center Advisory Board, the Title IX Compliance Committee, the GRAA Compliance and Equity Committee, and the NCAA Athletic Certification Steering Committee. Wenzel also serves on the ACC Student-Athlete Welfare Committee, the ACC Women’s Basketball Committee, ACC Softball Committee and the ACC Women’s Tennis Committee. For her hard work, Wenzel was recognized by the United State Postal Service with the Sports Award at the 2008 “Women Putting their Stamp on Atlanta Luncheon”. Wenzel possesses a wide range of experience in athletic administration and coaching. She joined the Georgia Tech Athletic Association staff in October of 2005 after an eight year stint at Siena College (N.Y.), where she served as Assistant and then Associate Athletics Director of business operations while also coaching the women’s golf team.

At SUNY-Brockport, Smith was a student athletic trainer actively involved with the 23 varsity intercollegiate athletic teams on a daily basis. During the summer before his senior year, Smith took an Athletic Training internship with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he carried out daily treatments/taping, rehab protocol, and practice preparations while also working a few home preseason games. Smith also worked with the Rochester Raiders Indoor Football League team the previous spring. Smith has also been a part of many tournaments including the Rutland Herald Hockey Invitational and USA Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships. While working with University Sports Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Smith assisted with carrying out and performing the trials for the spine research which was published in the Journal of Athletic Trainer and is a part of one of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association position statements on Cervical and Spine Injury management/protocol. Smith is a Certified Athletic Trainer, certified professional rescuer and is a member of the National Athletic Trainer’ Association.

While at Siena, Wenzel served one year as the school’s intramural director and assistant facilities director before being named Assistant Athletic Director for business operations and head women’s golf coach in1998. In seven seasons as head golf coach, Wenzel led the Saints to five-consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles from 2001-05. She relinquished her coaching duties following the 2005 season when she was promoted to Associate Athletics Director.

Dennis, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., was a member of the Dorman High School swim team, as well as team captain her senior season. She also swam for the YSCC for 11 years. This past summer, Dennis coached a Spartanburg summer league swim team. Born on April 29, 2989, the Georgia Tech senior intends to major in polymer and fiber engineering.

The Atlantic Coast Conference The Tradition Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now, in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 113 national championships, including 60 in women’s competition and 53 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 209 times. Men’s swimming and diving has been a league-sponsored sport since the ACC’s berth in 1953, while women’s swimming and diving saw its first season in 1979, but both programs continue to bring new heights of success to the ACC each year. The 2009-10 season marked a campaign that saw the league’s swimmers and divers help distinguish ACC swimming and diving on a national level both academically and athletically. In 2009-10, Miami’s Reuben Ross, North Carolina’s Chip Peterson and Maryland’s Aleksander Damjanic exemplified the ACC’s reputation as an outstanding academic conference as all three were College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selections, bringing the league’s total to 31. Ross and Peterson earned second team honors, while Damjanic was named to the third team. Additionally, at the conclusion of the season, a total of 14 new men’s records, including six ACC Championship meet records, had been set, and 14 new women’s marks, including nine ACC Championship meet times, had been rewritten into the ACC’s record book. A combined 12 teams – six men and six women – saw action at the NCAA Championship meet last season, with the men placing five ACC teams among the top-25 team finishes nationally and the women placing four. The 2009-10 season marked the sixth consecutive season that men’s programs have had five or more teams compete at the national meet, while the women had at least six teams for the third-straight year. As has been the case for the past several seasons, the ACC again made its presence known on a national level with 14 men and 10 women winning All-America honors. Gal Nevo turned in three All-American performances at the NCAA championship, placing second in the 400 IM, eighth in the 200 IM, and 10th in the 200 fly as Georgia Tech finished 23rd. Duke’s Nick McCrory, who set an ACC record in both the one-meter and platform dives at the league championship, was the NCAA champion in the platform after tallying a meet record 534.00 points. He also placed second in the three-meter dive. Also on the national level for the women, ACC Champion Virginia posted a league-best ninth-

place finish. The Cavaliers were led by Mei Christensen, who was a five-time All-America at the NCAA meet, placing among the top-eight in two individual events and three relay events. Teammate Lauren Perdue was a six-time All-America, including one Honorable Mention recognition Overall, the men’s programs have seen 250 participants honored as All-Americans, 17 national individual champions, and one national championship relay team in its 57 years. In 30 years of existence, women’s programs have had 274 All-Americans and seven individual champions. Beyond the collegiate level are numerous former ACC swimmers and divers who have made an impact on the international stage. North Carolina alum Thompson Mann was the first male to compete at the Olympics when he won gold at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, and Sue Walsh, also a former Tar Heel, became the first female from an ACC institution to compete at the Olympics as a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. Mann also set a world record in Tokyo by becoming the first person to break one minute in the 100-meter backstroke with a 59.80 showing. Duke alum Nancy Hogshead became the first female from an ACC institution to win an Olympic medal with first-place finishes at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California in the 100meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle and relay teams, and a silver-medal performance in the 200-meter individual medley. 2009-10 In Review The 2009-10 academic year saw league teams capturing an all-time high eight national team titles and nine individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 50 national team titles over the last 13 years. The ACC has won two or more NCAA titles in 28 of the past 30 years. The ACC was the only conference in America to place four of its teams in the final Top 10 rankings of the 2009-10 Learfield Director’s Cup Standings--symbolic of the nation’s top overall programs--as Virginia (3rd), Florida State (5th), North Carolina (7th) and Duke (10th) all were ranked nationally in the Top 10. The Pac10 placed three teams in the Top 10, while the SEC and Big 12 had one each. A total of 123 ACC teams placed in NCAA postseason competition in 2009-10. The Championships The conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports during the 2010-11

academic year - 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981. Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship meet held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing with volleyball deciding its champion by regular season play. A History The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation.The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964. The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.
