What is the vibe like on-set? It’s a blast. David [Boreanaz] is such a great leader on-set. Even though a lot of us in the cast have little kids, we’re so thrilled to be at work. How would you spend a day off from work? I’d start with a workout, then I’d take my son [Blues, 2] to the park or the zoo. Lunch with friends would be nice, followed by a nap. What’s the last thing your son did that made you laugh? He took a wine cork out of his pocket, handed it to his preschool teacher and told her, “This is Mommy’s.” I was mortified, but it’s a French school, so I think she understands. —BRIANNE TRACY

In a break with traditional First Lady decorum, Melania Trump’s spokeswoman issued a sharp retort: “There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex; this is unfortunately only attention-seeking and selfserving noise.” In the book, Ivana, whose 14-year marriage to Donald ended when he had an affair with his second wife, Marla Maples, writes that she has “no problems at all” with Melania; she refers to Maples, meanwhile, as “the showgirl.” It was all too much for Real Housewives guru Andy Cohen. “All the wives are fighting,” the Bravo host tweeted. “Even I AM SPEECHLESS.” —SANDRA SOBIERAJ WESTFALL

He’s got a modern operation with multimillion-dollar equipment to expedite the mining process, but he taught me the tried-and-true way: separating gold from rocks with water using an old-fashioned pan. The result? Seven tiny flecks of gold. I was elated. But Schnabel, who’s mined $13 million of gold over six years, is quick to knock me down a peg. “You couldn’t buy a Tootsie Roll with that,” he said. Better luck next time, I guess.

After three decades of working in Hollywood, says Heather Graham, some roles stand out: “Boogie Nights of course. And Austin Powers and The Hangover. Mostly I think I’m lucky I’ve never had to work in a 9-to-5 job!” Now the actress, 47, is starring on Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders as Judalon Smyth, the mistress of L. (Smyth was the one who told the police there were audiotapes from therapy sessions where they admitted to the crime.) But Graham hopes the show sheds light on what may have motivated them: sexual abuse. “To have a show where two men open up about being sexually molested by their father? Hopefully it helps people feel more comfortable talking about it so we can stop it from happening again.”

SOUTHERN STYLE “I started with no money and not a design bone in my body,” says the Kentuckyraised Sims, 44 (with, from left, Grey, 9 months, Brooks, 5, husband Scott Stuber, 48, and Scarlett, 2). “This book is a reflection of my life in every way.”

Your new book, Everyday Chic, is about entertaining, organizing and decorating. Why did you tackle those topics? My first book [The Everyday Supermodel] focused on how to be the best you can be inside and out. Now, three years later, two babies more, this book is a reflection of how to live the best life you can—and how to live it with style and gratefulness, without having to spend a lot of money. How do you do it all with three kids under the age of 6? I missed so much when I was working, now I try to say yes to everything. But listen, [having] the third one is hard. One is like a pocketbook. Two, okay, they play with each other. Three? I have a big sign in my house that says, “Happy Mess,” and I really mean that. It is about embracing it. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s your best advice for making a house into a home? There really is outdoor fabric on all my indoor sofas and cushions, because I’ve got to tell you, there’s a smoothie, there’s formula, there’s a dog, and there’s a child vomiting at all times. And when it comes to your closet: If you haven’t worn it in nine years, you’re probably not going to wear it. Getting rid of stuff—no hoarding—it really does lead to a happy, healthy home. How has becoming a mother changed you? Instead of saying “I have to” do something, say “I get to” do it. Look, if you saw me now, I look terrible. I’ve got a cold, I’ve got two petri dishes taking naps right now and one at preschool, but it just changes your mind-set—you get to do it. They’re all I need.

Why ICare

I became aware of the Helen Woodward Animal PERSONAL STORIES Center when Diane Keaton posted about it on social ABOUT GIVING media and mentioned Remember Me Thursday— BACK a movement that helps connect homeless pets with animal lovers to find their forever homes. Adoption is the greatest gift that you could give yourself. I was adopted, and I know the benefits of someone taking me and loving me, and there are no rules to love. When it comes to pets, a lot of times people just want little puppies, but there are so many pets out there that need homes and just want love. I had a Maltese named Madeline that lived 14 years and died on the day after Wicked opened, so she shared a lot of special moments with me. After Madeline died, I went to Spot Rescue in Los Angeles, and that’s where I found my dog Thunder [left]—the biggest blessing in my life. You get 10,000 times more love back if For more information, go to you decide to adopt an animal. animalcenter.org —REPORTED BY NICOLE SANDS

Pink, Beautiful Trauma

The grand and, yes, absolutely beautiful return of an icon POP Pink’s triumphant LP contains collaborations with artists ranging from pop savant Max Martin to the singular rapper Eminem, but she unites these diverse stylistic strains with her boundless charisma and a cohesive vision. Emotional ballads (“But We Lost It”) and poppy kiss-offs (Em’s “Revenge”) flow into one another seamlessly. She tackles her subject matter boldly too, from forceful political statements (“What About Us”) to ballads about the disillusionment of adulthood (“Barbies”). (And, perhaps reflecting her 11-year marriage to Carey Hart, the love songs have a unique flavor as well.) Beautiful Trauma affirms that, even after nearly two decades in the pop sphere, Pink remains one of the genre’s most empathetic and vital voices. (Oct. 13)

The summer’s funniest movie features a grade-A ensemble—Queen Latifah, Regina Hall and Jada Pinkett Smith—but its breakout star is the sensational Tiffany Haddish, for whom no joke is too low, raunchy or out there. She steals scenes she’s not even in. The trip is to the Essence festival in New Orleans, where the group hopes to patch up their fraying friendship—in more carefree times they called themselves the Flossy Posse. But things will get outrageously messy and angry, with everyone acting more like ladies from Hades. (Oct. 17)

Hoffman and Thompson as an aging sculptor and his wife.

Art lives forever—and so do family grudges COMEDY-DRAMA Great artists are a selfish breed, reducing loved ones to veins that feed into one big, beating heart of ego. According to director Noah Baumbach’s funny, fractious film, that goes for minor talents too. Dustin Hoffman plays a well-regarded, never-hot sculptor—he has one work in storage at the Whitney—who ignores the often bellicose misery of his adult children (Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Elizabeth Marvel). Emma Thompson is his latest wife, a frowsy creature who seems to accept that she wasn’t cut out to be anyone’s muse. (Launches Oct. 13) Chan respects no boundaries as he seeks revenge.

Crazy ExGirlfriend

Revenge is a dish best served up with a musical number COMEDY Left at the altar, Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) is in Fatal Attraction mode in season 3. She slinks back to the office having restyled herself as a properly unhinged femme fatale—“My hair is dark, so I look evil, but I’m wearing white, which is ironic”—and announces a certifiably crazy plan of revenge against her ex, Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III). The musical-fantasy numbers, as always, are funny, over-the-top and electric, referencing everything from Bob Fosse to Les Miserables. And, for good measure, the second episode winks at Fifty Shades of Grey. (CW, Oct.13, 8 p.m.)

Chip Gaines has always been the kind of guy who leaves a party early. “I’d rather be missed than the idea of someone tiring of me,” he says. “It’s a bit of a comical consistency in my life. I would end relationships before they got stale. I would move on to a different idea before I got bored. Even in high school I would just leave places, and my friends would be like, ‘Where’s Chip?’ I wanted people to be on their toes. I never wanted to be the last guy out the door.” Now, sitting at the helm of a home-renovation empire, Chip is still determined to head out on a high note. Together with his wife, Joanna, the pair have decided that they should walk away from their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper after the upcoming fifth season. “It’s been a dream for us, a once-in-alifetime experience,” he says. “But for us, being on TV was never the end-all.” That’s not to say that it was an easy decision.“It’sasadfeeling becauseit’swhat introduced us to the world that we’re basically saying we’re ready to step away from,” says Chip, adding that they agonized over the decision to move on for more than a year. “We were both in tears.” After all, since its premiere in 2013, Fixer Upper quickly became the highest-rated show on HGTV, turning Chip, 42, a contractor, and Joanna, 39, an interior designer, into household names. The show also helped to launch their booming Waco, Texas-based Magnolia businesses, which include a real estate company, the Silos (a retail store that draws 40,000 visitors a week), wallpaper and furniture lines, a quarterly magazine, luxury vacation rentals, an upcoming restaurant and a product line for Target. They’vealsowrittenabestseller, The Magnolia Story; Chip’s new book

Capital Gaines (see excerpt) is soon to hit shelves, and a design book by Joanna is in the works. “We gave everything we had to this show—the beautiful homes and those sweet families—but this just felt like the right time to catch our breath for a bit,” Joanna says of their final decision. “It’s scary and nerve-wracking but also thrilling,” adds Chip. “If we turn off the television, does it also turn off all these other opportunities? The answer could very well be yes. People could stop coming to Waco and lose interest in us as a whole. But we have a funny feeling that it’s going to go the exact opposite.” That risk is one both Chip and Joannaaremorethanwillingtotake. In a world where reality TV can rip families apart, the Gaineses say their marriage and the happiness of their four children, Drake, 12, Ella, 11, Duke, 9, and Emmie Kay, 7, need to come first. Since Fixer Upper’s inception, the Gaineses have filmed 11 months out of the year, a duration that few other reality shows follow. Juggling the demanding schedule, along with Magnolia and its 500 employees, began to wear on them. “Nobody told us that that was unique,” Chip says of their grueling production schedule. “Nobody told us that that was a little bit irrational.” While

the couple powered through, they knew it wasn’t sustainable. “I realized the show was demanding time from me, and I needed to be giving it to our business, toour relationshipand myfamily,” he says. “That’s the million-dollar question. How far can you push it before something really does break down? And that’s kind of where we landed.” Seeing the effect nonstop production had on their children was the deciding factor. “They would ask, ‘Mom and Dad, do you guys have to film again today? When is this going to be over? When are y’all going to be done? Can’t we just have a picnic? Does the film crew have to be there?’ ” Chip recalls. “The kids were so young when we started,” adds Joanna. “Fast-forward to today and our oldest is almost a teenager— they’re all growing up so quickly.” While all four kids do appear on Fixer Upper, their scenes are kept to a minimum, and Chip and Joanna don’t allow them to show their faces in photo shoots. “We’ve wanted to protect our children and make it as normal as possible,” Joanna says. “I want them to go and fall down and scrape their knees and get back up. The most common form of eczema is actually a chronic disease called atopic dermatitis. You can see the signs of atopic dermatitis on the surface, but a key underlying cause remains hidden. Inflammation beneath the skin can lead to the red, itchy rashes that you try to manage, but just keep coming back. This underlying inflammation is always active, meaning your next flare-up is just waiting to return.

always be looking forward to what’s next. As it relates to TV, you just never know,” Joanna says. “We really want to focus on this break and take a step back to let this allsoakin.Regardlessof whatthe future holds, we are hopeful for what God has for us and our family in this next season.” The immediate future will consist of a hard-earned vacation (“It’ll be nice to be able to travel—and not for work,” says Chip) and carving out time with the kids. But the couple say they are forever grateful for what the show has allowed them to accomplish. “We wouldn’t have changed it for anything, and we wouldn’t have done it any other way,” says Chip. “We’ve enjoyed every minute.”

In an excerpt from his new book Capital Gaines, Chip details his dreams for his business—and those touched by it. I am so keenly aware that God has entrusted us with Magnolia for a reason. This little company has always meant more to us than any amount of notoriety or recognition ever could. Magnolia will undoubtedly be an enduring part of what we leave behind. We pray that it will far outlast us. We dream that our children’s children will get to see what we’ve built and that it would be a monument symbolizing the value of finding joy in hard work. Joanna and I also strive every day for the work that we do to create lasting, meaningful and positive change in our people and our community. We want our employees to rise up as leaders in their own right. We want them to follow their dreams, whatever they may be—go back to school and get that degree, become world-renowned in their fields, or stay home with their children, if that’s what they feel they’re called to do. Even if the company loses our valued employees to these dreams of theirs, that’s okay. It was our honor to be the runway for them, the launching pad that they needed to go for it. From there we’re anticipating a chain reaction of sorts with exponential impact. We believe our employees will go on to change the world in ways that Jo and I could never attain by ourselves. Our legacy is their legacy and vice versa.

“Right this minute our kids are doing great, and Jo and I are doing great, but you can’t run like this forever,” says Ch ip (on the farm with Joanna and their four kids).

The surf legend and volleyball star open up about weathering rough seas in their 20-year marriage, staying in incredible shape and raising their family By M I A M c N I E C E | Photographs by J E F F L I P S K Y

GAME CHANGERS From left: Hamilton, Reece and dog Kawa in Malibu Sept. 5. Hamilton on his board in 1984; Reece playing volleyball in 1999.

Here’s one perk of being married to a professional surfer: When he arises every day well before dawn, with his wife, Gabrielle Reece, and daughters still fast asleep in their Malibu home, Laird Hamilton makes sure to empty the dishwasher before heading to the beach. “For married women, that’s called foreplay,” jokes Reece. Still, there’s a tradeoff: “He also leaves empty coffee cups.” One of the world’s most athletically gifted couples, legendary big-wave rider Hamilton, 53, and pro volleyball champion Reece, 47, are about to celebrate their 20th anniversary next month. That milestone hasn’t been easy for two driven competitors, and they’re candid about how they’ve weathered struggles in their marriage. “I say it’s called a relation ‘ship,’ ” says Hamilton. “We are in a boat, we have to work together. Sometimes it’s stormy, sometimes it’s calm, but you have to put the effort in.” A new documentary, Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton, directed by Rory Kennedy, takes a deep dive into Hamilton’s difficult childhood, awe-inspiring career and the challenges and joys of the couple’s family life. His freespirited single mom, Joann, moved to Hawaii when Laird was a baby. Pro surfer Bill Hamilton, then just 17 himself, fell for Joann and her towheaded toddler, and he became Laird’s stepfather and surf tutor, though as Laird grew up the two sometimes clashed. In school Hamilton was bullied for being one of the only white kids and an outsider. “My upbringing was a nightmare,” he says. “But when I look back on it, it’s what shaped who I am, and I wouldn’t change any of it.” Says Kennedy: “Laird is somebody who came from nothing and made a huge contribution with what he’s accomplished.” She was also drawn to his candor. “He sort of approaches life like he PEOPLE October 23, 2017

Hamilton had no idea the 6'3" stunner was a professional athlete and instead assumed she was “a bimbo,” he admits. At first, “he was not nice to me,” says Reece. That changed quickly. “It was more like love at first conversation,” Hamilton says. “I was amazed you were pretty and intelligent.” Jibes Reece: “I was amazed you were so pretty and smart yourself!” Two years later they wed in a small ceremony in Hawaii. Their daughters Reece, 14, and Brody Jo, 9, joined Izabella, 22, Hamilton’s daughter with ex-wife Maria. Despite his death-defying feats on the water, “I really didn’t know what being

scared was until I had kids,” Hamilton says. “If they’re hurt, you can’t take away their pain, and that makes you feel vulnerable.” The couple almost divorced during one rough patch but worked things out. Reece made headlines when she advocated for women being “submissive” in a relationship in her 2013 book My Foot Is Too Big for the Glass Slipper, explaining to Today at the time that being “soft” and “receptive” encourages her husband’s “acting more like a man and treating me the way I want to be treated.” She says now that the secret to their marriage’s longevity is “understanding that if you have someone you really love and respect, showthemyou admirethem, appreciatethemand even desire them on a regular basis.” Today they spend half the year in Malibu and half in Hawaii, following the surf. Their days are filled with sand, sun and rigorous workouts, and they have the enviable tans and abs to prove it. “Training every day is a mandatory part of our lifestyle,” says Hamilton, who developed a fitness program with Reece called XPT (Extreme Performance Training), a combination of high-intensity workouts in the gym, on land and in water. After myriad injuries, he had a hip replacement last year. “It’s titanium, and I feel incredible,” he says. The key to happiness for Reece is finding new challenges. “I so enjoy being a mother and a wife, but I need to have my own outlet as a person,” she says. For Hamilton it’s simpler. “My happiness is to ride a wave, ride it really far, ride it really big and ride it really fast,” he says. “When I come home, I am tired and hungry—and really glad to see her.”

honda Casto was in good spirits. On the morning of March 16, 2009, the 23-yearold aspiring model handed off her 9-month-old daughter Ava to her mother and set out with Ava’s dad, Steve Nichols, to Eagle Creek Trail, a popular hiking path with steep drop-offs along Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge. By early evening, a rescue crew responding to a 911 call from Nichols found Casto’s lifeless body at the bottom of a ravine. Says Casto’s mother, Julia Simmons: “I had a bad feeling.” As it turned out, so did the police. In February 2015, almost six years after Casto’s fatal fall, Nichols was arrested and charged with murder. Police alleged that Nichols, 42, pushed his girlfriend off the 100-ft. cliff so he could collect the $1 million in life insurance he had secured on her. Prosecutors also claimed he’d had sexual contact with Casto’s younger sister, and that he had previously tried to push his then-wife off a balcony in China during an argument. (Nichols denies both allegations.) Despite all this, authorities dropped the murder charge against Nichols in May, and he pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide. He received time served and three years’ probation. Nichols insists Casto’s death was accidental and that she was high on drugs when she slipped from the cliff. “When we started hiking up the trail, I knew something was wrong with her,” he says. “I should have grabbed her and brought her back to the car.” While prosecutors won’t comment, those close to Casto say the outgoing young mom was considering leaving Nichols because of their volatile relationship. “She was a very good mom and wanted to do everything right,” says Casto’s pal Jessica Colburn. “She always made the best of things, and that is why I loved her.”

The morning after Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton for the American Presidency, twins Jenna and Barbara Bush, 35, lay in Jenna’s bed (her husband, Henry Hager, was away) needing each other for “comfort,” as they both recall. Clinton’s loss got them thinking. “Why aren’t women lifting each other up the way my sister has always lifted me up?” says Jenna, a Today correspondent and mother of two girls (Mila, 4, and Poppy, 2). The idea for their memoir Sisters First was born. Barbara, the ultraprivate cofounder and CEO of the nonprofit Global Health Corps, tells People she was “hesitant; I knew I need-

JENNA In 1992, in my loopy fourth-grade handwriting, I wrote my New Year’s resolutions: “loose [sic] four pounds and join the student council.” My platform was about school lunches and bake sales, which might have related back to those four extra pounds. I lost to a beautiful sixth-grade girl. I came home and wedged myself into a crawl space under our rear patio and cried. In 1994, my father won his race for governor of Texas. In 1999, he sat Barbara and me down in the governor’s mansion and said, “I’m going to run for president, and I want your approval.” There was no crawl space then. sein’s sons Uday and Qusay were killed in 2003. Plastered on the walls of the brothers’ gym, American troops found photos of Jenna and me. Our images were scattered among hundreds of photos of naked women. Even though we were clothed, the news was chilling. The 43rd President didn’t expect his daughters to agree with all of his political views. BARBARA My first attempt to broach the subject of gay rights with my dad ended with my storming away from the table. With the absolute certainty that comes when you are 16, I believed that one conversation would be all it took to change his mind. My dad, to his credit, kept calm and simply asked me questions. I knew my dad as accepting and tolerant. Unlike me, though, he was not comfortable with the idea of gay marriage and its implications. I was not entirely unsuccessful. During a pause, my mother interjected, “It looks like your daughter has backed you into a corner.” My dad may not have changed his mind that evening, but neither did he try to change mine. One day in DC, Jenna and I spotted a bumper sticker on the back of a car: “Somewhere in Texas a village is missing its idiot.” Well, that idiot was our dad. For a second, the words stung, but then we looked at each other and burst into laughter. Now this line comes up regularly when we want to rib our former-leader-of-the-free-world father. That moment also underscores how our political lives involved a unique type of choice regarding the negativity—to be upset or to laugh it off. In one humanities class at Yale, I received mediocre grade after mediocre grade. My TA [told me] she’d give me an A if I convinced my father not to go to war in Iraq. Whoa there. I was left wondering how many other people thought a presidential daughter should be held responsible for any beliefs other than her own. JENNA In 2012, when he was 88, we almost lost

Gampy. My mom called and told me that he wasn’t doing well and that Henry and I had to come to Houston—now—to say good-bye. I was almost five months pregnant with my first child, Mila, and the first thing Gampy did as we walked to the bedside was touch my stomach. Then he said, “There’s death and there’s life and I can’t wait to meet this baby.” I started to cry. My grandmother asked: “Why are you crying? He can’t wait to meet the baby. He’s going to meet the baby.” She kept stating over and over all the things he had to look forward to. She gave him no choice but to live. And so he did. JENNA On April 13, 2013, out of my short dress came an explosion of water, like a tidal wave. The doctors had told me that my baby was breech. So this definitely wasn’t your typical water-breakingat-a-baby-shower moment. Barbara grabbed my hand. “It will be okay,” she said calmly. She had no idea whether it would be or not; neither one of us had ever given birth, but I saw the steadiness in her eyes and I believed her. BARBARA My sister followed me to New York City. We now live four blocks apart. My nieces pop over any time to see Auntie Barbara. We are still intertwined in each other’s lives. . . . For my entire time on this earth, I will share my birthday, and my life meaning, with one other person: my sister.

t 3 years old, Judith Light memorized the holiday poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” and decided to perform it for her father. It was at that moment the girl from Trenton realized she wanted to pursue an acting career. “I planned out my whole life,” the actress, 68, recalls. After graduating from prestigious Carnegie Mellon and getting her start in theater, she told her family, “I’m never doing a soap opera, never doing a sitcom, never marrying an actor and never moving to California.” Of course those very specific restrictions were eventually cast aside as Light found fame first on the soap opera One Life to Live and then on the sitcom Who’s the Boss? She’s currently on the critically acclaimed Transparent, streaming on Amazon. As for being married to an actor and at least a part-time California resident? “If you want to make God laugh,” Light says, reflecting on her unexpected career path, “tell Her your plan!” Joining One Life to Live in 1977, “I realized my disdain for [soaps] was inappropriate—these were brilliant actors,” says Light, who played fan favorite Karen Wolek, a housewife turned prostitute. Angela Bower on Who’s the Boss? Light helped define ’80s fashion (those shoulder pads!) and honed her comic timing working opposite Tony Danza. “He taught me so much,” she says, calling their onscreen chemistry “magic.” Now, with Transparent, she’s reaching a whole new audience—and spreading a message of transgender acceptance. “If we can talk to each other, we can change our minds about each other,” she says, “and the world can be a different place.” In her personal life Light also bucked convention. She and her husband of 32 years, actor Robert Desiderio, 66, spend much of their time on opposite coasts. “He loves California, and I would never ask him to leave there, and he would never ask me to leave [New York]. It’s been the best,” she says. “I highly recommend it.” In the end, “this is the life I never expected to have,” she says. “But I am so grateful.” —JESS CAGLE AND CHRISTINA DUGAN

THE POPULAR RADIO STAR AND MOM OF 13 OPENS UP ABOUT THE DEVASTATING LOSS OF HER TEENAGE SON By JANINE RUBENSTEIN

With a voice richly warm and earnest, she’s endeared

herself to 8.3 million late-night listeners with the question “Who’s on your heart tonight?” But now popular syndicated romance radio host Delilah Rene Luke, 57, is reeling from a heartbreak like no other, after her 18-year-old son Zachariah took his own life on Oct. 3 following a battle with depression. “He was my wild child, 13 broken bones, umpteen trips to the hospital with appendicitis, tonsillitis, a fractured skull. Wild, but so, so sweet,” the Port Orchard, Wash.-based star and mother of 13 tells People, speaking out for the first time since sharing the wrenching news on Facebook. After a car accident in December 2016 left him “traumatized,” Zack (one of her three biological children— the other 10 were adopted) went through a painful

breakup, followed by an illness that caused him to struggle in school. “When he found out he wouldn’t graduate, he spiraled into depression,” says Delilah. But lately “he was doing so well,” says his mom, who declines to share the manner of his death. She adds, “His goodbye note did not mention sadness, anger, angst or depression, just a madness about feeling like this world was not his home.” It’s yet more sorrow for a woman who’s seen a lot of it. After three painful divorces, Delilah married business owner Paul Warner in 2012, then lost son Sammy, 16, to complications from sickle-cell anemia that same year. As she prepares to lay a second son to rest, “she’s devastated,” says friend and rep Aaron Crisler. Known for offering fans life-learned advice set to love songs seven days a week, Delilah is now stepping away to grieve. As Crisler puts it, “The lady who is there for everyone else every single night now needs our love and our prayers sent right back to her.”

Chadwick Boseman would have been happy to

become a screenwriter or a director, quietly working behind the camera. A funny thing happened instead: He became a movie star. After acclaimed turns as Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get On Up, Boseman landed the role of Black Panther, Marvel’s first black superhero, who’ll appear in a stand-alone movie next year. He also stars in this month’s Marshall, about the early career of the first African-American Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. Not bad for a guy who never dreamed of being famous. “I always saw myself behind the scenes,” says Boseman, 40, who started writing plays in high school in Anderson, S.C. It was me responding to things that were happening in my neighborhood, wanting to deal with the violence [there], so I wrote a play and got my friends to do it.” As for his current, decidedly more front-and-center situation? “I haven’t chosen this path, the path chose me.” Here’s more about Hollywood’s new hero and his unexpected journey to success.

WhyI Fought Back A YE YEAR AR AFTER AFT FTER ER SUCCESSFULLY SUING FOX NEWS CEO ROGER AILES FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT, GRETCHEN CARLSON IS INSPIRING OTHER WOMEN TO MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD By NATASHA STOYNOFF

I

t was September 2015 when then-Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson asked to meet with her boss Fox News founder and CEO Roger Ailes. By then, as the 20-year TV veteran would later attest in court proceedings, she had endured years of ongoing sexual harassment from Ailes, whom she recalled commenting repeatedly about her legs, calling her a “man hater” and telling her she needed to learn to “get along with the boys.” But the confrontation didn’t go as planned, she would allege: “[He said], ‘I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago, then you’d be good and better

A Voice for Women “We still have so much work left to do on this issue,” says Carlson (above, speaking out on sexual harassment in June in NewYork City). “But now we’re seeing cracks in the veneer, and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

But it was not the first time she had been sexually assaulted in a professional setting. Near the end of my term as Miss America, I went to New York to meet with an important television executive. He called some top TV shows and told them I was a great talent, and I was flattered by his attention. After a full day, he took me to dinner and sat there advising me in a fatherly manner. After dinner, he offered to have his driver drop me at my friend’s apartment where I was staying. He and I got in the back seat, and I suspected no ill intent. But as we neared my

and I’d be good and better. . . . Sometimes problems are easier to solve [that way].” In fact Ailes’s problems were just beginning. Carlson once again rebuffed his advances, and 10 months later—despite the fact that her show The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson won consistently high ratings—Ailes ended her contract. Carlson fought back, filing a sexual-harassment lawsuit against the then-76-year-old media mogul in July 2016 that detailed a long history of harassing behavior, including Ailes’s instructing her to turn around in his office so he could get a good look at herbehind r behind and telling her that while he’d already “slept” with three other Miss America winners, Carlson, who was crowned Miss America in 1989, was “sexy” but “too much hard work.” The lawsuit led to Ailes’s resignation from FOX, rocking the network and earning her a $20 million settlement in September that same year. “I Fallen Empire had to do something,” says Carlson, Roger Ailes resigned 51. “I didn’t want future women to within two weeks face similar indignities. Because, in following Carlson’s 2017, who the hell would ever have lawsuit. At least 10 more women came thought we’d still be fighting this?” forward and accused Carlson’s new book Be Fierce: Stop him of harassment, Harassment and Take Your Power including then-FOX Back is all about that fight. Inspired anchor Megyn Kelly.

While working as a political reporter for WRIC-TV in Richmond, Va., in 1992, Carlson had her first encounter with sexual harassment in the workplace. It was chilling, and completely unexpected. I was in a car with a cameraman I didn’t know well, miles from the station, when suddenly he started talking about how much he’d enjoyed touching my breasts when he put the microphone under my blouse. He continued his graphic monologue the entire way. Completely alone with him, in rural Virginia, I felt sheer terror. When we got back to the station, I was still trembling so badly my fingers were bouncing off the computer keys as I tried to file my story. . . . What I remember most is how much I didn’t want to tell anyone, and how fearful I was of any possible repercussions to me. . . . But my boss, noticing my ashen face and trembling hands, pulled me into his office and demanded to know what had happened. I didn’t want to, but feeling sick to my stomach and taking a great leap of faith, I told him. My boss was a good guy. He didn’t expose me, and the cameraman was eventually let go for other reasons.

destination, he lunged at me. His mouth pressed against mine, and he jabbed his tongue down my throat. Shocked and horrified, I wrestled out of his grasp. I gasped for the driver to stop, and I tumbled out of the car onto the street. I ran to the apartment building sobbing. I felt stupid and unnerved. How had I believed he was truly interested in my talent? . . . Not long afterward, I was in another office—this time with a top public relations executive in Los Angeles. We had a very good meeting, and when he suggested we get dinner, I thought nothing of it. I got in his car, and he immediately grabbed the back of my head and pushed my face so hard into his crotch I couldn’t breathe. I somehow was able to forcefully push him off, and feeling sick to my stomach, escaped from the car as fast as I could. Again, I thought, why had this happened? . . . Women who have been assaulted in this way suffer from a form of PTSD. You feel all of your self-confidence drain out of you in a nanosecond. And it never really goes away. Twenty years after that man shoved my face in his crotch, when I was a successful broadcaster and a mature, confident woman, I saw him walk by my office door one day. He was visiting someone in my company, and I immediately went into panic mode, slamming my door and hiding in my office until I was sure he was gone. I was sweating and upset, literally back in the moment of the assault. Even though it had been two decades s h incident, d since the I wass l l debilitated. d bl d. completely

“To make change, women need to collectively agree to have each other’s backs,” says Carlson (at home in Connecticut).

by the thousands of letters she received following her lawsuit, she calls it a “playbook” for helping women find their voice. “I think women felt comfortable telling me their stories because they knew I would get it,” she says. “Many had never told anyone, not even their husbands. I realized that I owe it to them to do something with this. Their voices were silent, but I could bring them to light.” The Minnesota-born Carlson knows firsthand the pain and self-doubt that comes from staying silent. During her reign as Miss America and in her early years as a television journalist, the Stanford grad says she was frequently harassed by men in power (see excerpt). “You’re scared to come forward for fear of how you’ll be labeled or that you won’t be believed and what will happen to your job,” she says. Ultimately Carlson’s lawsuit against Ailes (who died in May) paved the way for other female employees at Fox News to come forward. She’s also been credited with inspiring some of the women who have spoken out about being sexually harassed by Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein (see page 23). “I’m so proud that other women decided to speak up after they saw my story,” she says. “This is a tipping point. It’s like a chain reaction of courage.” This year Carlson extended that chain with her Gift of Courage fund, which provides grants to programs that empower women and young girls “to speak up, not only about sexual harassment but about any way in which they feel they’re being put down,” says Carlson. And she’s been lobbying Congress to abolish forced arbitration clauses (where sexual-harassment complaints are settled by in-house,corporatemediators) that keepmany

of these cases secret. “We must stop the cycle of silencing women,” she says. For Carlson, who lives in Greenwich, Conn., with her husband, sports agent Casey Close, 53, daughter Kaia, 14, and son Christian, 12, the focus is on the future. On the day her FOX settlement was announced, she recalls, “my daughter came home from school and said, ‘Mommy, I had to answer a lot of questions today. I was so proud to be able to tell my friends that you are my mom.’ And I thought, ‘Wow— that’s what this was all about.’ This was about passing along an act of courage to my children and the next generation.”

And the family is taking full advantage of the perks of the Sunshine State. “We’re close to the beach, and the kids really love it,” says Arnold. And with family nearby, “there’s lots of young kids and cousins for them to play with.” As they settle into their new home, the couple say they’re excited for their future. “After everything we’ve been through,” says Klein, “it’s a very exciting time.”

very room in Brooke Shields’s four-story New York City townhouse has what the actress calls “a cherry”—that “one thing I really didn’t want to live without, the one thing I splurged on.” In the living room it’s the stone mantel Shields and her architect rescued from the Plaza Hotel after the property was refurbished in the mid-2000s; in the dining room it’s the hand-blocked wallpaper; and in her light-filled kitchen it’s the custom-made marble-topped dining table, inspired by a baker’s cart that Shields, 52, spotted in Europe. “If you look underneath it,” she points out, “you can see it’s never moving. It’s bolted to the ground.” Shields searched for years before finding the historic five-bedroom house in 2009; she shares it with her husband, Chris Henchy, 53, a movie producer (Bachelorette, The Other Guys), and their daughters Rowan, 14, and Grier, 11. The most recent additions to the elegant set of rooms are a series of large-scale bird photographs by Australian artist Leila Jeffreys, to whom Shields has become both a friend and patron. “They’re just extraordinary. They’re so human, and they’re all named,” says the actress, who is currently guest-starring on Law & Order: SVU. They’re modeling 2 for her,” Shields adds with a laugh. In addition to complementing the eclectic interiors, the feathered art provides a connection to nature, something that Shields is lucky to have in her Manhattan neighborhood. “Even in the heart of New York City,” she says, “we open the French doors, and in the little backyard, we hear the birds.” —MACKENZIE SCHMIDT

‘THIS HOUSE FEELS LIKE IT SHOULD BE ALIVE. THAT’S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT’

—JOANNA GARCIA SWISHER

hen JoAnna Garcia Swisher and her husband, former pro baseball player Nick Swisher, started house hunting last year, they knew they needed a family-friendly space for their daughters Emerson, 4, and Sailor, 1. The six-bedroom, six-bathroom early-20th-century Los Angeles house they purchased fit the bill. “It felt like a warm and inviting place, and the neighborhood is walkable,” says the Kevin (Probably) Saves the World actress. “It really catered to the lifestyle that we want to raise our girls around.” Garcia Swisher, 38, who is so passionate about decor that she is going to school for interior design, reconfigured the space so her daughters had bigger bedrooms to play in— with a shared bathroom in between. “When they argue, they will always have to use the same bathroom and get over it!” she says. As a compromise with her husband, who loves color, “I’ve been slowly trying to cultivate an art collection to add a little life and warmth to what feels like a very white open space,” she says. But she is happy that the old home has “character and flavor—like a creak in the floor or the sound of water running through the pipes.” —CHRISTINA DUGAN

With the gray, white and black accents throughout the house, Garcia Swisher loves to use accessories, art and flowers to accentuate the space, especially in her kitchen: “It’s a fun and affordable way to give your room a new or seasonal feel.”

‘I NEVER SET OUT TO BE A DECORATOR, BUT THEN FATE INTERVENED’ —ERIC HUGHES

SLEEK STYLE

For his high-rise New York City apartment, Hughes chose a sophisticated gray flannel fabric for his curtains and furniture. “Up here in the sky, it created this backdrop and let the view be the star.”

DESIGNER ERIC HUGHES’ CELEBRITY HOME MAKEOVERS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER TO THE STARS SHARES DECORATING DETAILS AND SHOWS FIVE ROOMS HE DESIGNED FOR A-LISTERS

Before Eric Hughes became one of the biggest names in interior design, he was a studio executive making movies like Bring It On. “I loved being in the film business, but I knew it wasn’t going to be a lifetime career,” he says. He left his job in 2000 and moved to New York City, where his pal Sarah Jessica Parker asked him to decorate her Bridgehampton farmhouse. “I loved it,” says the self-taught designer, whose philosophy starts with editing: “It’s better to pull pieces out of a room and then add a few and see where you are. You don’t need the whole enchilada.” —EMILY STROHM

SARAH JESSICA PARKER & MATTHEW BRODERICK’S FARMHOUSE KITCHEN Sincce one of Sarah Jessica Parker’s favorite colors is red, it became the anchor of tthe Bridgehampton room. “As much as I love that entire kitchen, and oh my, how many memories i come rushing back, the piece that I feel most sentimental about and favor the most is the apple,” says Parker. “We all just loved it. A classic Eric find and touch. Of course, it traveled with us when we moved and left that beautiful kitchen to someone else.”

I love my art, like the Diane von Furstenberg scarf Eric had framed as a surprise.”

KATIE COURIC’S TRANQUIL BEDROOM Aft fter selecting the paisley fabric for Couric’s bed, H g es chose “soothing colors” and added texture to Hughe the wall by brushing th ll b b hi on a number of different shades. “I asked Eric to create a place where I could feel serene and peaceful, like I was sleeping in the clouds,” says Couric of the Hamptons’ space. “I love this room, the colors, the curtains, the bed, everything about it.”

‘THIS SPACE IS SO COLORFUL AND HAPPY. IT ALWAYS FEELS CHEERY AND BRIGHT’ —LAUREN GRAHAM

LAUREN GRAHAM’S EXOTIC DINING ROOM Hughes doesn’t typically use a lot of pattern, but he found the perfect print for Graham’s L.A. dining rroom m during a trip to Istanbul. “I came back and said, ‘I’ve idea to wallpaper the ceiling and walls.’ She wasn’t sure, ‘I’ got this hi crazy id but I told her, ‘Trust me on this one.’ It turned out beautifully,” Hughes says. “A real show-stopper.”

HANK AZARIA’S LOW-KEY FAMILY ROOM L During a shopping trip together, Hughes and D A aria chose the large-scale albatross painting by Aza W l Ford as the Manhattan room’s statement piece. Walton F He added H dd d an oversize i sofa and cozy rug. “He wanted it to be a media room, but he likes to entertain and have friends over,” says Hughes. “It’s a comfortable place where you can just kick back and relax.”

Lumene VALO Beauty Drops, $21.99; ulta.com

FIGHT AGING AND ACNE

Founder of Honest Beauty (and soon-to-be mom of 3) Jessica Alba needed products that tackled more than one skin issue—so she made her own Tell us about your new line, Younger + Clearer. I wasn’t able to find a product with clean ingredients geared toward someone like me, who was too young for wrinkles and too old for breakouts. I wanted to create a solution that addressed both concerns. What’s the superhero ingredient? Retinol. I started using it in my 20s, and I don’t have as many fine lines and wrinkles as someone my age might. I credit that to retinol. We’ve been developing our Night

6

Serum formula with Honestly Pure Retinol, which is made without synthetic additives typically used to stabilize retinol, for a couple of years. I was using it before I got pregnant, and my skin never looked better. [Note: Consult your doctor before using retinol if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.] What typically causes you to break out? It’s usually related to hormones or triggered by nutritional choices or lack of sleep. In my opinion diet and sleep are equally as important as what

you put on your skin. How has pregnancy changed your skin this time around? I’ve experienced patchiness on my face. I’ve found that our Everything Organic Facial Oil works during times when my skin needs some extra love. It helps my skin look radiant and supple, so I can fake it when I’m not actually feeling the ‘pregnancy glow.’ What do you wish every woman knew about caring for their skin? It’s important to be mindful of what you put on your skin, as it can contribute to your overall well-being!

GET A MAKEUP-FREE GLOW There’s a reason vitamin C is popping up in a slew of new skin-care products. “It’s a powerful antioxidant that fades dark spots and any irregular pigmentation, so your skin looks brighter and more even-toned,” says celebrity dermatologist and The Beauty of Dirty Skin author Dr. Whitney Bowe. For best results, use a vitamin C serum in the morning (you can mix it with your SPF) to neutralize damaging free radicals, and again at night so your skin restores itself while you sleep. Clinique Fresh Pressed 7-Day System with Pure Vitamin C, $27; clinique.com

Before a big event, treat your skin to a radiance-boosting seven-day regimen, which comes with individual packets of powdered cleanser as well as a potent serum that you can add to your regular day or night lotion.

GIVE YOUR LIPS SOME LOVE

You already know the skinenhancing effects of a great face mask, but you’re probably not using one on the area you need it most: your lips. “They need all the TLC they can get,” says Sara Happ, who created a moisturizing lip mask for that very reason. “Leave it on for two minutes or more. It really makes such a difference.” And, yes, the bright pink shade is perfect for an Instagram selfie.
