Student Art of the Week: Brittany Butler’s ‘Choice’ could be going to D.C. By Natalie Coccagno Talented yet humble student, senior Brittany Butler has made a spectacular piece for an art contest sponsored by Congress. Butler’s inspiration started when she realized she wanted to do something patriotic. She wanted to incorporate the Statue of Liberty, so she did so, and then included a red, white and blue sky in the background to show off America’s colors a bit more. Butler explains that you can interpret one of the main figures of the painting, the girl with chains, in many ways. “It could be symbolic of a citizen or a group of people,” says Butler, when describing its abstract meaning. Butler, a student of Mr. Wallisch’s, worked on this piece for a month with much pressure from her classmates and mentors. Her favorite part was the background of the painting. “I put my own twist on it,” she explained about the well-blended and pigmented background.
Butler’s biggest difficulty was trying to get the painting to look realistic in different aspects, and also getting it done on time. The artwork will be on display at the Westmoreland Mall on Saturday, April 8 from 11 AM- 2 PM. The winning piece will be on display in the walkway between the Capitol Building and the House office buildings for one year. The second and third place winners will have their artwork on display in Congressman Murphy’s Washington, D.C office for one year. A People’s Choice Award will also be given to a piece. This artwork will hang in Congressman Murphy’s Mt. Lebanon office for one year.
BPHS raises the bar at lunch By Megan Fedkoe Here at BPHS, health matters. In an effort to achieve this goal of being healthy, but also finding a way to be full and satisfied, our cafeteria is adding a new build-your-own salad bar into the kitchen!
This new healthy choice offers students and staff the chance to personalize a delicious meal with a vast majority of fresh produce all while staying healthy. Starting on Tuesday, March 21, and continuing every Tuesday and Wednesday, new salad bar will be open to all students and staff in every lunch period.
The salad bar will cost a very reasonable $3.10 as students are able to choose from a vast majority of fruits, veggies, proteins, and dressings on their salads. Tuna, chicken, turkey, ham, and steak will all be available to load onto your customized salad along with an array of cheeses. Students and staff are able to choose bread sticks, dinner rolls, a slice of garlic bread, fries, or fresh fruit as a side to go along with your personalized salad. The various types of dressings allow students to top off a healthy lunch just the way they like it! Homemade salads such as Cilantro Lime Slaw, Black Bean & Corn, Broccoli Salad, Pasta Salad, Chickpea Salad, and Rice Salad will also be available as well. The cafeteria will rotate top selections so everyone can enjoy them, and make sure you vote for your top 3 choices! The lunch ladies are looking to add as many selections as they can so your feedback on the salad bar is important. Many students are looking forward to this new opportunity for lunches. Senior Bridget Heh said, “I can’t wait to be able to customize my very own salad! I’ll make sure to load my salad with tons of fresh carrots and other veggies! Can’t wait!” “Why couldn’t they have added this sooner! I have 9 weeks left in this school and I would’ve made a salad every day! But at least they did it, the variety of toppings makes my mouth watering for that Cilantro Lime Slaw,” said senior Yulduz Mamedova. Clearly, students are buzzing about this new lunch choice, so make sure to try it out and create your own starting March 21st!
Show your talent at Telerama By Megan Fedkoe Telerama is BPHS’ annual student talent show. With acts ranging from singing, dancing, acting, playing an instrument, and reading poetry, this will not be a show that you should miss! If you have a unique or over the top talent, then you should share it with your school. Telerama auditions are April 11-12 at 2:45 p.m. right after school in the auditorium. The audition sign up sheets are in Room 220. If you are interested in being the emcee for Telerama, then sign up to audition in Room 220. Auditions will take place on Monday, April 10 and are for seniors only. Prepare a one-minute monologue and meet in The Little Theater at 3:15 p.m. after school on the 10th. If you aren’t interested in participating in Telerama, then make sure you support your friends by catching the show on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13. “I am gonna do a lil somthin’ for the judges, and I really hope I get picked,” said junior Kara Brunner. “I went last year and it was great! I never realized how much talent we had in our school!” said senior Bridget Heh.
Hawk Eye Ha Has A ghost was spotted in BPHS? By Zoe Zilcosky Recently, a picture has surfaced from the Goofy Awards on Mar. 22 of a weird figure in the auditorium. What was just an accidental picture turned into a true controversy. Is there a ghost in BPHS? The picture depicts a blurry figure walking towards the stage. I sat down with a witness, Emily Wagner, to discuss what she saw. Is that you in the picture with the white sweatshirt? “Yes it is.” Do you recall seeing anything unusual walking towards the stage? “No, but I felt a presence… like something was there, I just couldn’t see it.” What do you believe the figure in this picture is? “It’s gotta be the ghost of BPHS.” Now it’s up for you to decide. Do you believe BPHS is haunted?
