greetings MEG MORING

EDITOR’S NOTE

“‘Rolling, rolling, rolling … Keep this old bus rolling.’ My father’s mellow tenor belted out his paraphrase of Rawhide’s theme song as we bounced along.” So begins Nancy Bacchus’s memoir about seeing the USA from a school bus-turnedvacation-rig (see this month’s Panorama section). How many of us have hit the road in the summer to some adaptation of that old tune (or “Wheels on the Bus” if you have toddlers in tow)? There’s nothing like backing out of the driveway and leaving the city limits sign in the rearview mirror as we head out for vacations, adventures, or just a change of scenery for a day. Who knows what we’ll see, whom we’ll meet? Last fall, Naomasa Kunisawa of Japan traveled to Georgetown to meet Stiles Byrom, a man whose friendship would have been unthinkable during World War II, when they were young soldiers on opposite sides. In “Sun and Stripes,” writer Mikaela Cain tells how the two men now share a precious great-granddaughter and haven’t let the past prevent their friendship. No matter how we get there—gussied-up buses, sleek airplanes, packedto-the-gills SUVs—some of us travel to reach personal goals. Members of the Masters Swim Team profiled by Rachel Brownlow in “Happy, Healthy, and Strong” do so as they compete all over the United States and beyond. In another story, Nancy Bacchus talked to Scott Finnell, whose mania for marathon running has taken him across deserts, up mountains, and overseas. Whatever your reason for heading out on the highways, waterways, and skyways this summer, go ahead and do it: Sing your version of the Rawhide song at the top of your lungs. The people around you might roll their eyes. Or they might just join in.

Gold’s Department Store The Williamson County Sheriff’s Posse rodeo was quite an event in Georgetown during the 1950s. Folks looked forward to activities such as “Western Week,” when members of the Sheriff’s Posse patrolled the square on horseback. Folks found not wearing western clothes were “arrested” and thrown in the makeshift “jail” erected on the courthouse lawn. Locals flocked to Gold’s Department Store on the square to stock up on western wear all year long—but especially before rodeo time. Gold’s featured one of the largest hat selections in Central Texas and hand-blocked the lids right on the premises. Whether the hat was a Rancher, Cattleman, Open, Rodeo, Telescope, or another popular shape, Gold’s used steam and millinery skills to handcraft custom creases into the hats. This tedious process involved measuring, steaming, and drying to achieve just the right look. Gold’s also put names on western belts, a special service in those days. “I remember that the store always smelled like leather when you walked in,” recalls longtime Georgetown resident Patsy Bracamontez, who visited the store as a girl. “It was the department store for western wear. Come to think of it, it was the department store in Georgetown, period.” The first Gold’s Department store was opened in Bartlett in the early 1900s by I. Gold, who came to Texas from New York as a boy, intending to become a clothing salesman. Cut from the same cloth, Gold’s son, Harry, heard Georgetown’s call and opened the 105 W. 7th Street (the north side of the Square) store in 1936. Gold’s Department Store enjoyed great success and expanded several times during its seven decades in business, including adding an upstairs area. According to historian Donna Scarbrough Josey, Harry Gold also restored the building’s original storefront, using existing photographs as his guide. More than a decade after the store closed its doors, Georgetown still remembers Gold’s. – Karen Lange

Swimming Fast and Taking Names Georgetown swimmer competes at Junior Nationals All focus and determination, 18-year-old Beau Fusilier pressed down his goggles once more, and stepped onto the diving block. “It’s just like any other race,” he thought to himself. “Swim fast and give it your all.” “Swimmers, take your mark!” commanded the starter at Junior Nationals. Beau leaned into dive position and prepared for the— BUZZ! With that, he sprang off the block, using an efficient flutter kick to gain momentum underwater. The next few minutes were a blur for Beau as he raced himself, the clock, and the competition on either side of him in the 400 Individual Medley: 100 meters butterfly, 100 meters backstroke, 100 meters breaststroke, and, finally, 100 meters freestyle. “Your body hurts, but you push through the pain,” says Beau, who’s accustomed to pushing himself to higher levels, both in the pool and on land. During the last 50 meters of the race, he caught sight of another 16

J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

swimmer slightly edging him out and kicked into higher gear, swimming even faster and more efficiently. “Competition has always fueled me,” Beau explains. “When I was younger, my brother [who’s three and a half years older] was much faster than me, and I’d always try to one-up him,” he says, laughing at himself good-naturedly. The extra throttle served Beau well at Junior Nationals. He dropped time in all five of his races, placed first in his heat in the 400 IM, and placed 26th over all in that event. “Swimming in Junior Nationals has been on my bucket list since I was 13 or 14,” says Beau, who prepared for the meet by swimming nine times a week—or about 20 hours per week— for four months, without reprieve. “It was a big meet and really fast.

You have to meet the qualifying times, and only about 100 swimmers nationwide competed in each event.” Now that Beau has checked swimming in Junior Nationals off his list, his next stop is qualifying for Olympic Trials in the summer of 2016. It’ll be a challenge, but Beau and his coaches agree that swimming at Trials is well within his reach. “It’s funny,” says Beau. “When I first started swimming competitively [at age seven], I didn’t actually enjoy it that much. I didn’t like deep water, and I didn’t open my eyes under water. You know the doggie paddle or Tarzan? That was me when I first started…. Actually, if I hadn’t had three older siblings who were already on the [Aquadillos swim] team, the coaches probably would have kicked me off, because I was having trouble making it across the length of the pool.” Today, he’s swimming fast and taking names. Congratulations, Beau. We look forward to seeing you at Olympic Trials. – Rachel Brownlow Lund

Songs of the Open Road “Rolling, rolling, rolling … Keep this old bus rolling.” My father’s mellow tenor belted out his paraphrase of Rawhide’s theme song as we bounced along. Like journalist Charles Kuralt, we were on the road … again. Adventures beckoned, and a 1950 school bus was our chariot. Oh, it was a sight! Still painted bright yellow, “Jimmy” was crowned with an airplane’s wing tank that provided water to the sink. Shiny screens framed the windows, and Mother sewed emerald privacy curtains. It had shelves, a butane stove-top, and my parents’ double bed across the back. People stared. During several summers in the early 1960s, we crisscrossed America. High-speed touring was not the goal; “leisurely” and “laid back” set the pace. We met wonderful people as my parents’ friendliness invited impromptu conversations. Like turtles, we trundled everywhere in our little home. Like gypsies, we felt colorful and carefree, loving the road’s rhythm and Daddy’s songs. “There’s a long, long, trail a-winding” and “Those faraway places, with the strange-sounding names” led us onward. The bus roused curiosity coast to coast. Two genteel ladies in Georgia gave us two huge tomatoes after peeking inside, exclaiming, “Well, I declare!” At Luray Caverns, Virginia, a 16-year-old guide came to visit. In northern New Mexico’s desolation, a patrolman pulled us over, perhaps expecting illegal immigrants. No one believed we were speeding. Sometimes, Daddy’s song became the chant “I think I

18

J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

can, I think I can.” We lurched over Wolf Creek Pass … barely. We held our breath in San Francisco as Daddy struggled to control “Jimmy” atop steep streets (muttering, not singing). In southern Utah, we fought desert heat among Arches National Monument’s amazing formations; 115 degrees makes old engines touchy. I learned to navigate, pre-GPS, in strange cities, to guide the bus onto leveling blocks, and to stand unconcernedly atop the bus with a garden hose as if this were normal. I saw our country’s fullness and beauty. I found that being different is okay, especially when dreams pass from father to daughter. Time softened some frustrations, so wanderlust returns every summer. Shortly before his death, Daddy said that the bus trips were probably his happiest times. I have no bus now, nor any intention of getting one. My family travels more conventionally, but I have a secret when asked to tell something unique about myself. I hear strains of “Homeward Bound” or “Red Sails in the Sunset” echoing distantly from a funny little bus. – Nancy Bacchus

Passport Surprise The countdown to Ann and Mike Jindra’s twelve-day Eastern Mediterranean cruise had begun and all systems were go … until one line buried deep within Holland America Line’s paperwork snagged their attention: Holland America Line highly recommends that all guests carry a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the completion date of your travel. While the Jindras’ passports were valid for several months beyond the cruise’s date of disembarkation, they didn’t cover the full six months. “The average American takes words like ‘suggest’ and ‘recommend’ to mean that ‘it’s good to do, but it’s not mandatory,’” says Mike, a retired officer who served in the Marines and the Army. “And we interpreted it as such.” According to Holland America, however, “highly recommend” actually meant “required.” With their current passports, the Jindras would have flown to Rome for the trip of a lifetime only to be turned away before embarking. The additional six months “is not required by the United States,” says Mike. “From a U.S. standpoint, our passports were still valid; but from the cruise line’s, they weren’t…. We later learned it had to do with the European Union’s socialized medicine.” If illness or injury caused the Jindras to stay in Europe beyond their passports’ expiration date, they might have been tapping into the European Union’s social services. The Jindras’ plane and cruise tickets were nonrefundable, so they had to purchase expedited passports, which meant a trip to Dallas because expedited passports are available only in a handful of Texas locations. Ann persuaded their travel agency to pay the difference in cost between their standard passports and the expedited ones, plus travel expenses incurred to get them. The agency threw in complimentary chocolates and a day at the cruise’s spa. “And,” says Ann, “there was a gift waiting for us in our stateroom when we boarded the ship.” It goes without saying that the Jindras will always read the fine print from now on! – Rachel Brownlow Lund

What’s Your Story? HOLLY MOORE My husband always said, “After I retire, let’s buy a sailboat.” So right after he retired, I said, “Let’s get that sailboat.” We moved from Oklahoma City to Kemah on the Texas Gulf Coast and bought a sailboat. We worked on the boat, and I learned to sail. (My husband already knew how.) I’d never even been on a sailboat before! We left Kemah and sailed all over the Gulf Coast, Florida’s coasts, and even to the Bahamas. We sailed for three years, living on the boat. Our friends and family were always irritated with us because we didn’t have a cell phone, and they never knew where we were. It wasn’t only a wonderful experience—it was life-changing. After that, we decided to tour the United States and live in a travel trailer for another three years. Then we decided we needed a home base, so we bought a home in Georgetown.

Meet the Tiffin House family. Marco Rios

Hortencia Torres

Assistant Manager Tiffin House II

Tiffin Campus Quality Control Manager

The moment I started working at Tiffin House I got to know our residents and I fell in love. The year and a half I’ve worked at Tiffin House has been a true blessing. Each day I get to know something new about them. What I love the most is the being a part of a loving staff that gives everything to the residents and the families. We provide true individual care. Caring for the residents is my passion and I do it with love. Each resident becomes a part of our family.

Katie McDanald, RN

Nancy Meyer

Tiffin Campus Assistant Director of Nursing

Tiffin Campus Activity Director

I have been at Tiffin House for almost a year and can’t imagine working anywhere else. The quality of care offered at Tiffin is beyond excellent. Having been a RN in Texas for 15 years, I have never experienced a working environment that is so completely patient - centered and dedicated to its residents. The staff members love these residents and their families and are successful at offering individualized care. I spent several years watching my grandmother with dementia move to different facilities and I know the emotional struggle of the family. Tiffin House gives families peace of mind and gives residents their dignity and the quality of life that they deserve. I am so proud to be a part of such an amazing family.

Lori Osborne Tiffin Campus Residence Director Tiffin House has been a life changing experience for me that has filled my soul and heart in ways I cannot express. The care and love of our residents is the most important thing we do every day and we never lose sight of the fact that we are here to make life better for them. My staff, my residents, the families. We are all family and I love that every day I have the privilege to spend my day here with all of them and be associated with the name Tiffin House Assisted Living and Memory Care. 26

I have been at Tiffin House for over 5 years and I am so impressed with all the training the staff go through to care and love our residents. We as caregivers are treated with respect and compassion by the owner and director, we are one big family. I love being a part of Tiffin House and the wonderful families that we care for each day. Providing nothing but the highest standard of loving care is our mission.

I’ve been a part of the Tiffin family four years. My role as activity director is a rewarding one. I enjoy the opportunity to spend one-to-one time with each resident. Our activity program is geared to each resident’s personal interests. That’s just one reason, out of many, why Tiffin House is a special place.

Michelle Garza Manager Tiffin House I I have been with Tiffin House for over 4 years and I’m so happy and blessed to be part of this loving family. That is what Tiffin House is all about, family, we take care of our residents like they are our own family. Every day we shower them with the loving care they deserve. It is an honor to have families see us as a part of their lives during their journey.

Jenn Northcutt, RN Tiffin Campus Director of Nursing Tiffin House is like no other assisted living in Central Texas. The loving, respectful, patient-centered approach that Justin has created is innovative and effective. The staff is highly trained and passionate about providing our residents with the best possible care. I am proud to work with each of our staff members to provide individualized care with the understanding that Tiffin House is not merely a facility but truly their home.

Kerri Woods

I have worked for Tiffin House for over 3 years. When I am at Tiffin it does not feel like work to me because I love my job and my residents so much, it feels like home. Tiffin House is family, it is a home. I enjoy my co-workers so much and the Team Tiffin approach, I cannot imagine working any other place.

In March 2013 my life changed when I became a resident care aide at Tiffin House. Within the last 2 years I have learned a lot about Alzheimer’s and dementia, but above all I have learned the culture of Tiffin House, one of love, compassion, patience and empathy. I truly love what I do and the difference I see it makes in our residents lives. I enjoy their big smiles every day. Tiffin’s owner, Justin Trodahl, along with the director, managers, nurses and care staff combine to be a truly wonderful team at providing our residents and families with Dignity, Independence, Respect and above all else Love. There is no other place like Tiffin House.

d Stripes Two men who fought as enemies in World War II meet over dinner 70 years later

By Mikaela Cain Photos by Shelley Montgomery

Early on the morning of October 9, 2014, 88-year-old Jonah resident Stiles Byrom took the ribs he’d been marinating overnight from the refrigerator and put them on the grill to smoke for ten hours. That evening, he and his wife, Marge, packed up the ribs and headed to their son Mark’s house in Georgetown, where Mark and his wife, Jan, had prepared the sides and dessert to round out a traditional Texas meal. When Stiles arrived, he gave a big hug to his great-granddaughter, Ellie, and her parents, Emily and Joshua. Then he turned to the other guest in the room, someone who, decades back, when Stiles served in Japan in World War II, was the enemy. But now he was family. Stiles crossed the room, shoved out his hand, and gave a Texas welcome to Naomasa Kunisawa, who’d come

all the way from Japan to see his great-granddaughter Ellie. Naomasa bowed in return. Thus the paths of these two men joined, and a friendship began.

A GOOD OL’ SAILOR BOY “When I was in the Navy, and I had a sailor cap on the back of my head, the prettiest head of hair, and the white bellbottoms, I was just about the cutest sailor in the entire United States Navy,” Stiles jokes. Stiles was born and raised in Georgetown, back when the city had only “4,000 people in it” and folks “walked everywhere.” Stiles signed up for the Navy in September 1944. He was deployed to the Pacific Theater aboard the destroyer USS Hudson and later took part in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The crew of the Hudson escaped  J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W 3 5

death several times by dodging or destroying Japanese kamikaze attacks. They also suffered heavy damage when they helped to stabilize an American aircraft carrier, the USS Sangamon, after it had been attacked by the Japanese and was ablaze. But the crew made it home after the war ended in 1945. Stiles went on to attend Southwestern University, where he met Marge, and the two married after he graduated in 1951. He then worked for Texaco, and they raised their family in El Campo and Sinton. When Stiles retired from the oil business, the Byroms moved back to live on their farm in Jonah, and Stiles now calls himself a “gentleman farmer.” They frequently visit their son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jan, whose Georgetown home is a meeting place for the Byroms’ four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, one of whom is Ellie.

A DIGNIFIED CAPTIVE Naomasa Kunisawa was drafted into the Japanese military academy in the middle of his university studies. He left his homeland on an old, poorly-maintained merchantman ship, the Kan-eimaru, and set sail to Bangkok, Thailand, in September, 1944. After a four-month trip that should have lasted two weeks but was delayed by a typhoon, American air strikes, and malfunctions, the crew arrived in Bangkok. Captured  36

by British and Dutch soldiers and placed in a labor regiment for a year, Naomasa remained in Thailand until Japan lost the war. Naomasa led his platoon, which was tasked with making practice fields and accompanying the British soldiers on guard duty against local scavenging raids. The platoon excelled, particularly at making practice fields, with such skill that during tea

time one day, a British commander said, “Give the tea to the Japanese soldiers who prepared those practice fields.” They served the Japanese first, and then British military men drank from the same cups—without washing them. After returning to Japan, Naomasa got very sick with tuberculosis of the lungs. He stayed in a sanitarium, at the point of death, for three years.

After an unexpected recovery, he passed his exit exam to graduate from college and went to work for the public utility department, a job that sometimes took him to General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters on business. There, he worked with Americans to reestablish Japan’s electricity department, then moved to a government organization that provided financial assistance to small businesses. Naomasa married Kazuko, a 31-year-old woman from Kochi, and had two daughters. He is now retired, and his wife passed away last year. Skilled in calligraphy and painting, Noamasa takes his sketch pad with him on trains and bike rides, capturing what he sees and then going home to fill in the color.

THE PATHS MEET AND MARRY Stiles and Marge were surprised when they learned that their granddaughter Emily was engaged to Joshua, a Japanese-American man she had met at Texas A&M, where they were students. Joshua, it turned out, was Naomasa’s grandson. 

J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W 3 9

Stiles and Marge talked about the fact that Joshua’s grandfather had fought for Japan in World War II, and Stiles came to a conclusion: “Japan surrendered, and we celebrated our victory. But all glory is fleeting. We had to go on…. We went on. As far as having any animosity or ill feelings, I really have none. Both sides suffered many losses of life.” Joshua took Emily to visit Naomasa in Japan two years after they mar-

ried. The 84-year-old shared his love of calligraphy with Emily and gave her paint brushes. But he also sent back gifts for Stiles: a bottle of sake and several oil paintings that he had painted. When Stiles heard that Naomasa planned to travel to Texas in October 2014 and wanted to meet him, he decided to return the favor of the gift of sake and buy Naomasa some Texas beer.

“As far as having any animosity or ill feelings, I really have none. Both sides suffered many losses of life.”

MR. KUNISAWA COMES TO TEXAS Stiles presented a case of Shiner beer to Naomasa on that October evening when they finally met face to face. Naomasa brought several paintings of the scenery around his hometown of Kochi on Shikoku Island for Mark and Jan and for Stiles and Marge. Stiles told him, “Arigato”—Japanese for “Thank you.” “During the war, I would have never imaged something like this happening, but it’s really wonderful,” Naomasa said in practiced English. Over the dinner table, the two men shared jokes about marriage and bragged on their grandkids and mutual great-granddaughter. Ellie, a three-year-old with a serious demeanor, dark wavy hair, wide almond eyes, and a complexion somewhere between her father’s and her mother’s, hurried to finish her dinner so that she could play with her cousin, unaware, for now, that her existence represents an unexpected weaving of two complicated strands of history. 

“You don’t get hurt with swimming like you might with a more highimpact sport,” says Linda Callaway, a 62-year-old swimmer who practices daily with the Aquatics of Georgetown Masters (AGM) Swim Team. “If you crash on your bicycle at an older age, chances are you’re going to break something. But if you make a mistake swimming, most likely you won’t have any injuries.” Because swimming is a “lifelong” sport that provides a full-body aerobic workout at low impact, many adults, seniors, and rehabbers gravitate toward it, says Ben Francois, AGM’s head coach since 2009. 46

J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

Unlike kids’ age group swimming where “it’s much more one workout fits all,” adult “masters swimming is a very individual sport,” says Ben. “We have swimmers at all levels, each with their own goals and potential. My job is to help them achieve those goals—whether it’s dropping time, competing, improving their stroke, or getting in shape…. Really, if they can make it across the pool and are comfortable in the water, we’ll teach ’em how to swim [on a team].” David Houck, AGM’s evening coach, echoes Coach Ben’s sentiment: “I urge new swimmers not be intimidated by any perceived lack of

swimming ability,” he says. “We adjust the workouts according to what you can do, so it’s always manageable, but we’re always pushing you forward.” Testaments to their passion for coaching, many of Ben and David’s proudest moments have been during practices, when they helped their swimmers to reach personal landmarks, like swimming 1,000 yards during a practice or swimming a 200 butterfly for the first time. It should be noted that while the team continues to grow in size, competition is by no means mandatory. A handful of AGM swimmers compete

at almost every meet, while others attend practices purely for exercise. “It’s unusual to live in a small town like Georgetown and have the wonderful facilities and the great coaching that we do,” says Linda. “In the wintertime, we swim in the beautiful Rec Center heated pool; in the summertime we have the Williams Drive long-course pool; and then we have Lake Georgetown, which is another beautiful, clean place to swim. We’re really lucky.” 

says Linda, downplaying the achievement. While Linda isn’t one to brag about her own accomplishments, the goals she’s set for herself are anything but modest. Since she returned to the pool at age 48—after a 30-year hiatus between high school swimming and

masters—the retired engineer has competed worldwide, swimming in Sweden, Montreal, Brazil, and across the United States. Now she’s made it her mission to compete in open water races in all 50 states. “You know those tacky little maps of the United States that you see as stickers on people’s campers? Well, my plan is to do that, but with open water swimming,” says Linda, chuckling. So far, she’s checked off 20 out of 50 states, and she has several more swims lined up for the remainder of the year. “I probably swim about 12 hours a week,” Linda estimates. “Because I’m older and it takes me a little longer, I’m usually the last one out of the pool…. But I have friends in their seventies and eighties, and they’re still swimming and going strong,” she says, smiling. As for Linda? “I plan to swim as long as I can,” she says, with a hint of pride in her voice. Favorite events: Mile swim; 200 butterfly; 400 IM; 5K; 10K

SHIRLEY BIBLES “I want to be around for my kids.” If an oracle had told Shirley Bibles 10 years ago that competitive swimming would have a profound impact on her life and well-being, she probably would have given him a quizzical look and thought that the oracle was surely mistaken. Perhaps he had missed the mark by a generation? Shirley had never swum competitively in her life, and rather than filling the role of competitive swimmer, she was busy filling the role of “swim mom,” driving her children to early morning practices and supporting them from the sidelines. But that all changed when Dale Huggins—head coach of the Aqua-

dillos youth summer league and founder of the Aquatics of Georgetown adult masters team—invited several swim parents to jump in and swim laps while they waited for their children to finish practice. Shirley, along with two or three other swim parents, took Dale up on his offer and began arriving at practice, ready to work on their strokes. Shirley didn’t realize it at the time, but Dale’s simple, heartfelt offer provided the spark she needed to change the course of her life. “About five years ago, I had gotten up to 250 pounds,” Shirley says. “I was tired all the time and definitely wasn’t about to start something like running, jumping up and down, or

Jazzercise; that was never going to be me.” However, in swimming Shirley found a low-impact sport that boosted her energy, burned away fat, and instilled in her an inner strength she never knew she could have. Today, the 53-year-old swims competitively with AG, racing in the USMS 5K and 10K Postal swims each year. “Swimming has changed my life, literally,” says Shirley. Not only has she lost 30 pounds since she began swimming, but she’s also been able to keep the weight off. “My cholesterol went down, my blood pressure went down, and I feel so much better.” Favorite events: 200 butterfly; 400 IM; 200 back; Mile swim

SHAWN FEATHER “I want to have a support system while I’m working out.” When Shawn Feather began swimming masters at the age of 40, she struggled to make it across the length of the pool. Each stroke took tremendous focus, and by the end of practice she’d find herself exhausted, both mentally and physically. Now, 13 years later, most of her personal goals involve swimming: besting her personal times, improving her vitals at yearly physicals, and keeping excess weight off. But while the health benefits initially drew her to swimming, Georgetown’s welcoming, tight-knit community has kept her coming back. “My best friends are on the swim team,” explains Shawn, who wakes up before 5 a.m. each morning to attend 5:30 a.m. practices. “We look out for each other, hold each other accountable, and support each other, like a family. Not too long ago I was sick and missed a day of swimming,” she continues. “That day, several people from the swim team called to make sure I was all right.”

Quite often, the team will go out for breakfast after Saturday practices, throw holiday parties and birthday celebrations for each other, cook breakfast at the pool, and hold picnics at Lake Georgetown, she says. “I wouldn’t be as successful if I didn’t have people to push me to keep going. But masters swimming has done that.” Favorite events: 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke 

The recession of the 1980s hit Georgetown hard. It crippled businesses, slashed jobs, and decimated savings. It also birthed The Caring Place, a nonprofit organization which this month celebrates 30 years of providing basic human needs to people in financial crisis in the Georgetown and northern Williamson County area. So many people struggled to make ends meet during that economic downturn that they overwhelmed churches with their need for help with food, clothing, rent, and utilities. Under the auspices of the Georgetown Ministerial Alliance, 11 churches formed The Caring Place (TCP). With far more faith and heart than resources, they opened their doors on June 8, 1985, with three bags of clothing, a handful of volunteers, and $17. Since then, Georgetown citizens, businesses, organizations, and churches have continued taking

care of their own with such generosity that TCP has expanded seven times and has operated in its 29,374-square-foot office space and warehouse and the 6,700-squarefoot Annex across the street since 2013. In 2014, TCP provided services valued at almost $1.6 million to 5,407 individuals through the efforts of 19 full-time staff, more than 500 volunteers, and a community of huge hearts. “There’s not a day that I am not in awe of what happens here in every aspect of the organization and how incredibly it happens,” said Ginna O’Connor, TCP executive director.

MEETING SPECIFIC NEEDS Services include financial and transportation assistance, vouchers for the food pantry and The Shops at The Caring Place, medical case management, seasonal programs, and space for community classes and seminars. Most clients are experiencing an emergency situation. Some

are elderly or disabled individuals on a fixed income. Others attend classes and seminars that promote selfsufficiency. All are treated with respect. The intake process starts with a look at the individual’s financial status, to be sure, but it also includes a personalized interview that allows the client to be heard and to provide a holistic view of the situation. The client advocate then helps develop a plan for how TCP can help fill the gaps until the crisis passes. “We look at each family or individual as a unique situation,” says Pam Robers, client services director. “We don’t try to fit them into our resources—providing them food if they need help with rent, for example—and we look across the breadth of what they may be needing and customize what we can do for them.” Those who need food or clothing receive vouchers to the food pantry and the store, where they can choose what they want to eat and wear rathJ U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W 5 9

er than receiving preselected items. “We don’t try to decide what clothing they want or what food best fits their eating style,” Robers says. “It acknowledges people’s independence of choice, and it respects their dignity.”

VALUING DONATIONS It also increases the likelihood that the food and clothing will be used. Stewardship is a guiding philosophy at TCP. From the moment donated items arrive, they are treated with the same care as the clients, which is one reason TCP has been voted Best Place to Volunteer/Give in Georgetown for four consecutive years. “Those donations are just as valuable as financial donations, so we handle them with respect and display them in the store very well,” says David Earl, donations and facilities director. Each item passes an extensive evaluation before it reaches the store’s floor. Volunteers do everything from inspecting articles of clothing, to assembling stereo equipment to ensure it works, to cleaning and appraising jewelry. “I’ve seen donations in antiques and collectibles go through the roof,” says store director Ann Lind, “because people know that we will care for them, we can market them, and we will realize the revenue from them.” TCP even repurposes clothing that doesn’t pass inspection, selling it to a Dallas company that then sells it primarily to third-world thrift stores.

But not every donated item can be sold, such as torn or damaged clothes, broken electronics or furniture, scratched or chipped kitchenware, and mattresses and box springs. Though TCP recycles as much as possible, the cost disposing of such items is a considerable expense.

RELYING ON VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are the literal hands and feet of the organization every day. Six to eight meet with clients. A dozen or more stock and staff the food pantry, and more than 70 inspect and price merchandise. “We cannot perform our daily operations without volunteers,” O’Connor says. “It simply would be impossible.” O’Connor grasps why the community volunteered 56,765 hours last year and donated new and gently used items that brought in more than $1.4 million: the mission. “When I ask volunteers why they are here, they reply, ‘Because we’re helping people.’ Our staff also does a wonderful job empowering them to do what they do, to do it well, and to have fun in a welcoming environment.” The best three words to describe Georgetown just might be The Caring Place. 

Marathon

Scott Finnell’s

He’s logged 67,000 miles, more than twice the distance around the globe By Nancy Bacchus  Photos by Rudy Ximenez

Scott Finnell can claim impressive credentials as an endurance athlete over three decades: marathons in all 50 states, 90 marathons total, 23 of which were “Ultras,” longer than the standard 26.2 miles. His first 35 marathon times averaged 3:30. Ten Ultras were 100 miles each (that’s running, folks), and two, the Badwater Ultra-Marathon, were 135-mile jaunts across Death Valley. In July. Going from North America’s lowest point upward to the portal to Mt. Whitney. In forty hours or less. Yet passersby might never suspect Scott’s achievements, seeing only a lanky guy with a friendly, relaxed smile. There’s also a little backstory on why he started running. Scott and his wife, Judy, grew up across the street from each other. She remembers him as “round like her brother,” and he says she was the athletic one. Scott also claims “bad flashbacks” from junior high about the presidential physical fitness program, and track competition wasn’t on his radar. Around the time of their 1984 marriage, Scott completed the first of three graduate degrees, but he was bothered by 40 extra pounds from doughnuts and Judy’s love of baking. He began running because he had “spent years getting my mind ready for a professional career, but my body was going to pot.” Scott might have been content to run just for health benefits . . . except that Judy signed him up for a 5K run.

Soon after, he ran a 10K and set a goal of “85 [miles] in 1985.” Since Thanksgiving 1984, he’s meticulously recorded mileage, which, he says, “sounds kind of OCD-ish, but it’s selfreinforcing. I can identify particularly good years. I’ve always been relatively competitive for my age group, but over time, I’ve substituted speed for longer distances.” By December 1985, Scott had run his first marathon, Dallas White Rock. He described it as his “worst race ever, a major ordeal, like going to the moon. I thought I had prepared, but I went out too fast. After 16 miles, I was toast, and I still had

a 10-mile death march.” Undeterred, Scott ran another marathon six weeks later and shaved almost an hour off his time. After nine Texas marathons, he qualified for Boston in 1992. He ran the Boston Marathon twice more, and then other states piqued his interest. Between raising three daughters and maintaining successful careers, Scott and Judy traveled widely, combining sightseeing with destination marathons, adding more and more states to his list, even running overseas in Budapest and in Lisbon. In 2014, Scott ran 10 marathons, three on back-to-back weeks (twice!) as he added the last states,

J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W 6 7

ending with Missouri, to his list. Each race locale brings challenges. Fortunately, altitude didn’t bother him last summer during runs in Denver, Colorado, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. When the Finnells lived in Pennsylvania, Scott trained throughout winter, sometimes in subzero weather. He didn’t say whether those days were helpful years later during a half-marathon … at the North Pole! His first Ultra was a 70-mile trail run through hilly Pennsylvania terrain over roots and rocks. “I fall down on trail runs,” Scott said. “I don’t pick up my feet very high, which is efficient, but I look like a plow-mule. I’ve never been injured, but something always hurts.” Despite such difficulties, Scott comments, “Some [locales] are just gorgeous, like New Hampshire and Oregon.” Scott’s marathon in Honolulu in 2007 was special for a different reason. He and Judy attended commemorative ceremonies honoring Americans killed when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. Judy’s uncle had died aboard the USS Arizona, and their daughter, currently a Navy chief,

68

J U N E 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

served in the ceremony that day, reenlisting then to become career Navy. Beyond marathon credentials, past, present, and future touched their family there in Hawaii. Scott credits The Self-Coached Runner for his training philosophy. Given to him after his first “crashand-burn” marathon, the book has been out of print for years, but he buys copies on eBay and hands them out to other runners, including his daughters. “It’s maybe my favorite book—concise, nice format, basic—it breaks down training dynamics over 10 weeks,” he says. “Some want to substitute head knowledge for work, but ‘doing’ is different.” Scott needs about 1,900 calories daily for maintenance, but replacing fluids and electrolytes during races takes planning. “Judy is a great crew person, and chicken noodle soup is the food of gods. Experiment,” he advises. “Refuel with

what your body can absorb without getting sick.” What’s next for Scott Finnell? He enjoys time with four grandchildren and teaching management classes, on his schedule, for the University of Phoenix. A 50-state medal display case is full now. Scott jokes that that was an expensive gift—it cost about $10,000 to fill it. Scott says that he’s “never beaten anyone nor lost to anyone.” As he contemplates turning 60 next year, Scott likes the idea of another marathon time under 3:30, and running marathons on every continent has some appeal. In the near future, he and Judy will ride their motorcycles to the four corners of our continent this summer. But … that’s another (adventure) story. 

Couple’s collection of pharmacy artifacts spans 50 years By Nancy Bacchus  Photos by Tina Lopez

Mary and Ralph Goertz do not collect teacups, thimbles, tickets, or trains. Tiles? Yes, they have collected tiles, but more about that later. Instead of more ordinary collectibles, the Goertzes have gathered items representing their dual pharmaceutical careers, and their stately rural home was partly designed to showcase this unique treasure trove. When visitors approach Ralph and Mary’s front door, a colorful stainedglass panel featuring a mortar and pestle, pharmacy’s universal symbol, hints at the displays within. Mary received a mortar and pestle as a gift when she graduated. Now the mantel holds around thirty sets, ranging in size from only an inch tall to much larger. Most are ceramic, but there are also sets made of brass, stone, marble, and pottery, collected from travels or from friends. Tall, traditional apothecary jars, called show globes, are elegantly displayed opposite the mortars.

Originally, these iconic containers created solutions through processes called percolation and titration, but now they hold jewel-toned water. A small centerpiece displays cobalt Wyeth eyecups and bottles. Along the wall in ceiling-high bookcases, guests can spy pill tiles and counting trays, used for hands-on work with prescriptions. There are balance scales, including an impressive one from Rice University, with teeny-tiny metric weights. Ralph and Mary have old copies of the Merck Manual, the pharmacist’s Bible—veterinarian, regular, and geriatric. Mary’s special keepsake is a hand-written ledger in which she meticulously recorded prescriptions and costs early in her career. In a nearby powder room, antique cabinets reveal rows of small bottles: aromatic oils, formulated syrups, and elixirs, not the stuff of today’s medicine cabinets. Some faded labels tout recognizable brands such as Vicks or Bayer, while other brands haven’t been marketed for years. Mary acquired most of the bottles from small

pharmacies in Louisiana that closed during the early 1970s. Oh, yes, the tiles. Lovely blue and white Delftware tiles accent three walls of the Goertzes’ kitchen; other pieces decorated her Georgetown store. Beginning in 1973, Burroughs Welcome Company promoted the Dutch tiles to pharmaceutical customers, sending scholarship dollars to the pharmacists’ colleges of choice in exchange, a win for everyone. Besides memorabilia, Ralph and Mary collected loyal customers and strong reputations for caring professionalism over the years. They operated “his” and “hers” pharmacies, rare in any town, on opposite sides of Georgetown from the early 1980s until 1996, when they combined their stores. After selling to Maureen Gallagher in 2000, they formed Goertz Consultant Pharmacists and worked extensively with Williamson and Bell Counties. Today, Ralph is retired, but Mary continues to work as a consultant pharmacist for the two counties and the Wesleyan homes. They’ve seen significant changes in pharmacy procedures since earning their graduate degrees—Ralph from the University of Texas and Mary from the University of Oklahoma. Despite football rivalries, the Goertzes share a love of their careers and of interesting items from pharmacies past. 

Correct Transition By Bill Easterly With 30 years experience in golfing, Bill Easterly has spent 17 years as a pro player from the US to Australia, winning the Gulf Coast Invitational twice, and three times on the Sr Circuit. Bill has spent 10 years helping others enjoy the sport. Here, he gives you priceless tips – free – every month – to improve YOUR game.

T

he main problem players have when they make the transition from the backswing to the downswing is rushing the swing when they are starting to move into the ball from the top. Remember, the most critical part of the swing is the impact, but the most difficult to execute properly is the transition. You have to change direction from the ground up. You can make this move two different ways. The first

way is to plant your left heel or the second way is to roll your left ankle slightly toward the target. Remember not to twist – just a slight roll – then turn. If you turn your left foot slightly toward the target before the swing, you can clear your hips easier. To do this, you lift the front of your left foot slightly and turn it to the left. This also helps take some of the torque off of your left knee. Some players feel as if they are pushing with the inside of the right foot toward the target - this is basically the same move with a different thought. The main thing to remember is the swing must start back with the hands, arms, and shoulders, but on the downswing the first move is going to start at the ground. The best way to get the feel for this move is to do it in slow motion until you can feel your body move in the correct sequence. 

There’s nothing better in summer than grilling by the pool or on the patio. Gather friends and family for a make-your-own-pizza party. Grilling the pizzas adds a beautifully rich flavor that’s perfect for an early summer day, but you can use your favorite recipe for oven-baked pizza if you like. Add a summery salad for an al fresco meal that offers something for each person’s tastes.  82

Homemade Grilled Pizza Dough

The dough requires about three hours prep and rising time, so start it earlier in the day. The recipe makes enough dough for two or three smaller pizzas. Ingredients for dough: 2¼ tsp active dry yeast 1 tsp brown sugar 1½ cups warm water 1 tsp salt 2 Tbsp olive oil 3¾ cups all-purpose flour Corn meal as needed Garlic salt as needed Preparation: 1. In a large mixing bowl with a dough hook, dissolve the yeast and brown sugar in the water, and let sit for 10 minutes. Add the salt and oil to the yeast solution and mix. Sift in most of the flour, mixing while adding. (If you don’t have a stand mixer with a dough hook, knead the dough by hand until fully mixed.) 2. When dough is well mixed, turn the mixer up to a medium speed and slowly add the last bit of flour so that dough sticks only slightly when

touched. (If you are making the dough by hand, knead in the last bit of flour, folding the dough over onto itself for approximately 5 minutes until you feel subtle resistance from the dough.) Cover the mixing bowl, set it in a warm place, and let dough rise until double, usually about an hour. 3. Mix dough one last time, remove it from the bowl, and form it into a ball. Allow the dough to relax for a minute before rolling out. Roll it out to approximate size of pizza pan and dust it with cornmeal. 4. Turn the dough over onto the cornmeal dusted pizza pan or pizza stone and allow it to rise again in warm place until doubled. 5. Preheat grill to 450° F. Brush entire dough with olive oil and lightly sprinkle edges with garlic salt. (I use oil from my marinated sundried tomatoes, or regular olive oil mixed with a little herb tastes great).

6. Use a fork to poke holes in the middle of the pizza, working outward until you reach the crust. 7. Spread sauce around the pizza dough until a thin layer covers the pizza evenly all the way to the crust. 8. Sprinkle 2/3 of the shredded cheese (see Toppings list) evenly over the pizza. Add the rest of the toppings next, meats first and wetter ingredients like fresh veggies on top. 9. Finish by topping with the rest of the shredded cheese. Place pizza on the grill rack so that it receives indirect heat. Grill until crust is golden brown (15 to 18 minutes). When the pizza is nearly done, brush the grill rack that is over the direct heat with olive oil and slide the pizza onto the grill over the direct heat. Rotate the pizza after about thirty seconds and remove it from grill after another thirty. This will produce a crisp, smoky crust.

Pizza Sauce The sauce takes about an hour to make. You can make it ahead of time; the recipe makes enough sauce for two large pizzas. Ingredients: 1½ pounds Roma tomatoes 8 oz. tomato sauce 2 green bell peppers, seeded and chopped ½ large onion, chopped 1 Tbsp minced garlic 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 8.5 oz. bottle marinated sundried tomatoes, drained (about 5 oz. tomatoes; reserve oil for brushing pizza crust) 2 Tbsp brown sugar 1 cup white wine 2 cups stock (chicken or vegetable) Leaves of 1 sprig basil, 2 sprigs thyme, and 2 sprigs oregano 1 bunch cilantro, chopped 3 bay leaves 1½ Tbsp chili powder 2 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper Leaves of two basil sprigs Preparation: 1. Sauté onion, garlic, and bell pepper in olive oil until onions are slightly browned. Deglaze with wine and allow mixture to simmer until the wine is nearly gone. 2. Add tomatoes and sauté for another 5 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, liquids first, except for the last of the basil. 3. Bring ingredients to a low boil and simmer for 1 hour. Then add final basil and simmer until the tomato sauce is fairly thick. 4. Remove sauce from heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Place it in blender and pulse until it is well blended, or keep it a bit coarse for added texture. 5. Allow sauce to cool completely before using it on pizza.

Toppings Add your favorites to this list! Shredded cheese (mozzarella and smoked provolone), Italian hard salami, Asparagus, Red onion, Mixed Italian olives, Ricotta cheese, Shaved Parmesan

I N T E G R I T Y • E X P E R I E N C E • I N D E P E N D E N C E F O R YO U R G O A L S • H O P E S • D R E A M S Georgetown View sits down with Scott Olson of Upstream Investment Partners and learns the caring concerned way he uses his expertise to help you plan your future. Scott also offers appointments in Georgetown, by appointment.

Q A

What can you tell me about Scott Olson and your ties to Georgetown? My wife Luci and I live in Georgetown with our two daoghters, Alex and Tori Hansen. We are active in the community through River Rock Bible Church, Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Heroes Night Out Board of Directors, Sertoma President, and VFW and MOWW veteran organizations. We love golfing, jogging and racquetball when we are not touring the Hill Country on our motorcycle

Q A

What can you tell me about your experience? After building a solid foundation as a financial advisor with a national brand, I went independent just over four years ago. I’ve been helping clients reach their financial goals for more than eight years now.

Q A

What exactly is Upstream Investment Partners? Upstream is a network of independent Financial Advisors, over 140 strong, across the country.

Perhaps more important is who is behind the Upstream name. My back office support comes from our broker/dealer, Sigma Financial Corporation provides comprehensive financial planning tools, products and critical support which allows our representatives to best help investors reach their financial goals.

Q

Much of what you do is very confusing for many investors. How do I know I am making the right decisions with my savings? I think that’s an area where I’m different than many advisors out there. I’m big on education and I take as much time as necessary to ensure my clients understand the pros AND cons of investments being considered, BEFORE they place that investment. Another way I like to improve understanding is by putting a comprehensive plan in place and reviewing that plan at least annually to make sure we’re still on track to reach the client’s goals. By doing the planning up front, we can help ensure that clients are not taking on more risk than is necessary to reach their goals.

A

Q

Is there any way to sort out all of the different statements that someone receives? One of the tools I use regularly gives clients a consolidated financial statement, pulling account information from not only accounts at Upstream, but also their 401k, bank accounts, and credit card info – all in one spot! Clients can access this information 24/7 by computer, and also through their smartphone. There is no additional charge to clients for this service.

A

Q A

What types of clients do you most closely relate to? I have a passion for helping small business owners understand their retirement plan options. I served in the Army National Guard as enlisted, then an officer, totaling 20 years – so I can relate to veterans. Honesty and integrity are huge with me. I also have a technical degree in Non-Destructive Testing, an industry many people have never heard of, but helps me understand and explain technical analysis of markets, and relate to engineer types. Because I emphasize education, I also enjoy working with clients that are new to investing – whether a death, divorce or other situation has required they are brought up to speed where their financial health is concerned.

parting shot

A Sunset

O

ne of my favorite places to watch a sunset is in Big Bend National Park. At this spot, Sotol Vista, you can catch the panoramic sunset from a 4,268-foot elevation. Mexico is just beyond the mountains, with the Rio Grande somewhere in between. We were among a handful of people lucky enough to find this particular spot that evening. Some brought lawn chairs, others a bottle of wine. One couple came all the way from South Africa. Most had cameras, but some simply stood in awe. Everyone faced west as the sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon and the blue faded from the sky. – Carol Hutchison
