greetings MEG MORING

EDITOR’S NOTE

The only river I played in as a child had no water in it. The Double Mountain Fork Brazos River looked exactly like someone had pulled the plug and let all the water drain out, leaving a stream bed dotted with puddles. My brother and I saw no fish, just deer tracks and smears made by snakes sliding over the cool, wet sand. “Don’t go in any mud puddles,” my mom warned. “They might be quicksand.” I don’t know if she was right; I suspect she just didn’t want us to get our Keds all clotted with red mud. Coming from the part of Texas where almost all the waterways are dry, grass-choked little things called draws, I was delighted to move to Georgetown and discover the San Gabriel River, which is the inspiration for many of our stories this month. As Carol Hutchison explains in “The Story of a River,” the San Gabriel River attracted various people—some of them famous Texans—to its banks long before Georgetown sprang up. Nancy Bacchus describes how Georgetown residents of old gathered above Blue Hole for Chautauqua events, while Mikaela Cain offers a story about a fly fishing shop owner who has loved rivers since childhood. And Nikki Elkjer has got a fish dinner all planned out for you in our food section. Spring comes in fits and starts this month, but on short-sleeve days you might spot Andrew Wright’s plane twirling through clouds (see Cindy Weigand’s article “Sky Dance”), or you might visit Market Days on the Square after reading Rachel Brownlow Lund’s behind-the-scenes peek into that monthly event. If you see some of our staff out and about (see our group photo in this issue), be sure to wish them a happy birthday; Georgetown View is five years old this month! Or you could just dabble your toes in the San Gabriel, where I’m pretty certain there is no quicksand. Enjoy the first days of spring weather!

Five fabulous ways to dress windows:

Does your space feel incomplete, cold, or just “blah”? Window treatments come in many styles and are exactly what you need to turn your room from plain to perfect! 1 Go tailored: Striped or solid roman shades compliment a casual space with clean lines. Already have blinds? Use faux-roman shades as toppers for that finishing touch! 2 Go luxurious: Give your master bedroom or formal dining an elegant feel with extra-full silk drapes. Add extra length for soft puddling. 3 Go au naturel: Pair organic woven wood shades with casual linen drapes. Not only do you bring texture and warmth to your space, but you add extra light control by layering. 4 Go bold: Use saturated shades and fun prints to add a punch! All white kitchen? Add a pop of color with window treatments for a fresh look. 5 Go minimal: No frills here! Try simple panels in a similar hue to your walls. The monochromatic appearance will feel hotel-like and relaxing. Visit www.facebook.com/kinseyinteriorsinc for photos!

CAROL HUTCHISON

Ready for a river walk? Find a map of the San Gabriel River Trail system, including the Randy Morrow Trail, at www. georgetown.org/parks/files/2009/02/ Georgetown_Trails.pdf.

Georgetown’s River Walk If you’ve ever walked the trail from San Gabriel Park to Booty’s Road Park, or if you’ve driven down to the park, where the north and south forks of the San Gabriel meet, to feed the insatiable ducks and geese, you’ve likely seen the trail marker for the Randy Morrow Trail. The marker, dedicated on April 5, 2013, honors the man who envisioned the San Gabriel River Trail system. Morrow (1955–2012), served as Georgetown’s director of Parks and Recreation and began piecing his vision together in 1994. During 21 years of service, he led the creation not only of the trail system, now a designated National Recreation Trail, but also of more than 20 area parks. More than eight miles of trail are available to walkers and bikers because of Morrow’s work. He obtained and coordinated more than $2 million in grants and donations of parkland to bring his vision to fruition before his retirement in 2011. Meredith Morrow remembers walking the trail with her father. “He knew every step and turn,” she says, “and even a few secret spots just off the pathway. He loved to see people out enjoying the trail with their families.” By design, the trail unites the two sides of Georgetown, running right under I-35. “He wanted to give every person in Georgetown equal access to outdoor spaces,” Meredith says of her father. “It’s almost like he left footsteps into the future.” – Cynthia Guidici

Thomas Wrege, Zion Lutheran Church and School Principal On September 28, 2014, Zion Lutheran Church and School in Walburg installed Thomas Wrege as the 18th principal in the establishment’s 133-year-old history. Mr. Wrege served as a Lutheran school administrator in Utica, Michigan, prior to coming to Georgetown. In 2013 he was among 61 principals named as National Distinguished Principals, the only Lutheran Church Missouri-Synod principal to receive the award. What’s your vision for Zion Lutheran Church and School? I have a sign on my desk that reads “Keep It Simple,” and my vision is just that. It is for me to be a blessing and a faithful servant to our students, school community, congregation, and church at large. It is to seek growth in the school for the sake of spreading the Gospel message and to provide Christian education to more children in the Georgetown community.

Alligators once glided through the San Gabriel River. Members of the illfated 1841 Santa Fe Expedition, whose mission was to establish a claim to parts of New Mexico for the Republic of Texas, camped on the San Gabriel on their journey north from Austin and took pot shots at the alligators. Alligator, a tiny community that once existed near Bartlett, was named for the alligators.

Zion Lutheran is famous for its November Wurstbraten sausage supper. What did you think of your first Wurstbraten? Wurstbraten was an incredible event! I was blown away by the preparations, the amazing food, the unbelievable crowds, and the loving participation of the Zion folks. I participated by helping with the Saturday meat-cutting and sausagemaking. I took every opportunity to share the Gospel message and to tell everyone about our ministry here on the hill. Tell us what you’re secretly scared of. Public speaking. Ironic, I know! My favorite Biblical character has always been Moses, who seemed to struggle with speaking… but God equipped him. That’s the way I feel. No matter how much I struggle with getting up in front of people, I know how important it is in my position, and God always equips me. – Karen Lange

Car Connoisseurs Who Care Members of a specialty car club do more than talk shop

It was 2011, and neither Shawn Jones nor Jason White could find an organization that catered to Central Texas car enthusiasts. Sure, a brief Google search unearthed multiple forums for Camaro lovers or Corvette enthusiasts, but really, as far as Shawn could tell, there was no catchall that provided car aficionados a place to meet, admire, and give back. “We wanted one place where you could learn about all the local car meets and car shows, whether you’re into classics or high-end exotics,” says Shawn, a Williamson County resident. “So we started Sweet Rides. But really, it’s about more than cars. We want to give back to the community.” And they do. Sweet Rides has taken part in three service-oriented community events: Cruise to the Capitol: For the last three years, Sweet Rides has partnered with Michael Marr and The Sunshine Kids Foundation to give exotic car rides to terminally ill children from around the country. The kids take a charter bus to the San Marcos Convention Center, where they can choose from 40 cars to ride in. Then, with a full police escort, they ride from San Marcos to the Texas State Capitol. Blue Santa Toy Drive: In December 2014, owners of classic, custom, and restored cars brought their cars to Corvette World in Austin and, led by a full police escort, drove to the offices of the Austin American-Statesman to drop off the toys collected for the Blue Santa Toy Drive. In past years, Sweet Rides has helped with similar Blue Santa drives in Leander. Flying Vikings: The nonprofit group Flying Vikings takes disabled children for airplane rides at the Georgetown Municipal Airport, sometimes offering them short aviation lessons as therapy. To help make the already enjoyable experience even more memorable, Sweet Rides uses their swanky vehicles to chauffeur the kids from their homes to the airport. – Rachel Brownlow Lund

Remembering Bob Payne There are moments that writers hope never happen—a computer crashes, a potentially juicy story turns out to be a dud, or the recorder fails to capture an interview. I’m thankful, however, that the latter happened, because it gave me the opportunity to get to know Bob Payne. I sat down (twice) with Bob to talk about how and why he decided to portray Robert McAlpin Williamson, known around our county as Three-Legged Willie. The bright twinkle never left his eyes as he drew me into his passion for Texas history— especially the curious tidbits that enrich the historical record. “There are so many really interesting footnotes to history,” Bob said. When it came to Williamson, Bob was determined to shine a light on a Texas hero often relegated to the footnotes. “The more I found out about Williamson, the more I became interested in the man. Why isn’t his name engraved in the history of Texas?” Bob said. “That’s an affront to my historical knowledge of Texas. So I set out to teach the world about Robert McAlpin Williamson.” And so he did. I got the chance to see Bob’s last performance as Williamson at the Leander Public Library. Sitting with my two children on the colorful carpet, I watched as history came to life. Decked out in a fine suit, a gray top hat, and his homemade wooden leg, Bob captured the attention of children and adults alike as he shared Williamson’s life with the crowd. While I will remember some of the amazing stories Bob told me about Williamson in our interviews—from Williamson serving as the first Texas Ranger to his being an accomplished dancer despite his handicap—I will treasure my memories of Bob Payne, a man with an easy-going smile who passionately pursued what he loved. – Tiffany R. Fly-In Fly Fishing Clint Barton, president of the San Gabriel Flyfishers in Georgetown, and his friend Keith Lovin traveled for five days last summer to Miminiska Lodge, north of Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada, in search of big brook trout. Keith decided that he wanted to fish for big brook trout and researched places to go. He settled on Miminiska, attracted to its remoteness. A pilot ferried the Georgetown fishermen and their guide to a lake and landed the plane on the water, There, the adventuring fishermen removed two canoes that were secured on either side of the plane and paddled the rest of the way. The guide led them to a quiet inlet, where they dragged their canoes onto the bank and waded through the cold water to a fly fishing paradise so inaccessible that fewer than thirty people a year fish there. “[In the United States] native brook trout are typically pretty small. There, they can exceed well over 20 inches,” Clint says. “One of the things you like as a fisherman is catching trophy-sized fish. In the fishing world, trout are one of the main game fish.”

22

Clint and Keith also fished for northern pike, aggressive fish with teeth so sharp that fishermen have to use steel leaders, as the pike can bite through regular lines. Out of respect for nature, the friends released everything they caught. For Clint, trips like this are not all about the fish. They’re also about the scenery and the pursuit of secluded areas far from the hustle of everyday life. “It was a rare and special feeling to know that there was no civilization for miles and miles,” he says. “There was no noise, no traffic, no planes, no cell towers, no electric lines; in their place were eagles, moose, bears, wolves, otters, and abundant beauty. So catching fish is really a bonus. It’s as much about the experience and the camaraderie as anything else.” Clint returned home with photos of his biggest catch, an eighteen-inch trout, and of his companion’s catches, one as long as 23 inches, but he also carries with him the memories of that majestic, remote setting where “it’s all about you and solitude and nature.” – Mikaela Cain

A grand experiment 125 years ago

in New York in 1874 to train Sunday school teachers of all denominations. The movement raced westward, expanding to include lectures, entertainment, correspondence courses, and four-year plans for home readings—virtually a college substitute for working people. Chautauqua was educational rather than revivalist, religious without sectarianism. By 1888, Texas Chautauqua needed permanent facilities, and a local committee initiated meetings and negotiations. Two members of the

Chautauqua Managers Board visited Georgetown, escorted by 18 citizens. The Sun reported, “The visitors were highly pleased with the varied, grand, and picturesque scenery … and an orderly, intelligent, and hospitable community….” Georgetown sealed the deal by donating 200 acres and substantial cash and building Chautauqua Temple west of town above

the South San Gabriel by July 1889. Later additions included a stone cross and fountain, plus a handful of “summer homes” built by leading citizens. Despite the town’s support, Georgetown Chautauqua had waned by the mid-1890s. Today, nothing remains of the site that lies between I-35 and the river near Burger King. 

The Chautauqua Movement peaked nationally around 1915, but 17 communities currently remain, from Maine to Colorado. In Texas, Waxahachie Chautauqua Preservation Society maintains an octagonal, open-air auditorium built in 1902, hosting an annual meet on the last Saturday in September.

Aerobatic pilot Andrew Wright makes loops, spirals, and rolls look easy. By Cindy Weigand Photos by Glen Watson, machpointonaviation.com

In videos of Andrew Wright flying his G202 stunt plane, his facial expressions reveal the intensity required to fly challenging aerobatics. He constantly looks around, up, and ahead, anticipating his next move while he completes the current maneuver. He braces his body against the nine Gs of a hard pull up or the five Gs of an outside loop that will throw him against the seatbelts. The three cameras mounted on his plane—two in the cockpit and one on the left wing of his plane—capture the earth, sun, and clouds spinning around the small craft with dizzying speed. 

M A R C H 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W 3 7

From the spectator’s point of view, the small plane climbs, snap rolls, loops, and spirals, leaving a trail of smoke for visibility. In one particularly breathtaking maneuver, Andrew flies straight up until the engine appears to stop and his plane slowly slides backwards toward the earth, tail first. At what seems the last moment before the crash, the plane’s motor roars back to life. From takeoff to finish, Andrew has carefully orchestrated his performance, even the engine “failure.” He smiles and explains, “Actually, the engine is idling and the propeller is still spinning. The reverse airflow can actually stop the engine, and it’s happened a couple of times. Even if the engine doesn’t restart, it isn’t a big hazard because I have this long runway below me. I can just land.” Andrew didn’t grow up yearning to fly airplanes, but he thought flying gliders might be fun, so his wife bought him a flight in a glider for his 33rd birthday. They were living in New Jersey, a long drive from any place to learn to fly gliders, so he turned to powered aircraft and soon earned his license. At the time, he was commuting to California for his job in cyber security, staying over one weekend out of three. On those 

weekends, he started aerobatics training in Livermore, California, and checked out to fly a couple of years later. Andrew first flew competition aerobatics in a rented Citabria and later in a Pitts Special. “Competition teaches you good discipline to anticipate what’s going to happen,” he says. “In competitions the box is only 3,300 feet by 3,300. That means it takes less than 15 seconds to fly from one edge to the other, so sequences have to be very tightly packed.” Competitors fly three different sequences. “The first is known, so everyone flies the same sequence,” he says. “The second is free, which is a routine you have made up and practiced. The last is unknown. No one has flown these sequences, and you don’t get to practice. You just have to go up and do it.” The lowest permitted altitude for competition flying in the advanced category, in which he flies, is 200 meters (660 feet). At air shows Andrew is allowed to fly whatever he wants in considerably more space. An airshow box can be 6,000 to 12,000 feet long. Andrew holds a surface waiver granted by the FAA, meaning he can fly as low as he dares. His personal minimum is 30 to 40 feet.  40

Plane to Plane

Photography from an Aerial Perspective By Cindy Weigand Meet Glenn Watson. He makes his living snapping photos while strapped inside doorless airplanes. How did you get interested in aerial photography? My father was a pilot and a photographer, so I became interested as well. My father taught physics. When we moved here from Houston, he taught aviation classes at Georgetown High School as well as physics classes. One year on a motorcycle vacation, I stopped in Nevada for the Reno Air Races. I took a bunch of pictures of it and they [weren’t that good], but I was hooked on becoming an aerial photographer. I’m the kind of person that, when I decide to do something, I want to be really good at it. How did you improve your craft? Five years ago, a friend in Dallas held a workshop on how to take pictures from another airplane. Afterward, I knew that this is what I had to do.

How do you prepare for a shoot? Every detail of the flight is carefully planned, and I brief all pilots. The shot list comes second to safe operations and coordination for the formation. I fasten everything to me because you can’t have anything fall out and possibly hit someone on the ground. Then I fasten myself to the plane and start taking pictures. I do only still photography. Shooting videos from the air is difficult because it’s so bumpy. What performers or aircraft have you photographed? I’ve photographed regional performers like Andrew Wright and Jan Collmer, but I’ve also photographed some of the nation’s top aerobatic pilots, like Rob Holland, Skip Stuart, and Greg Colyer. Last year, I got to photograph the Blue Angels Navy team. That was cool.

The biggest challenge getting into the field was getting people to trust me. I did a lot of flying for free, not getting paid for pictures. This got expensive, but you have to do that to get your foot in the door. Tell me about your pilot and plane. David Zavaleta flies for me. I met him on Craigslist and joined his five-member flying club. We left that club and now own a 50/50 share in an A36 Bonanza. David flies for me about 90 percent of the time, but there are a few other professionals I trust, including Andrew Wright. We chose the Bonanza because it’s certified to fly without the door. You can’t get good photos shooting through glass.

“I want to show people, especially kids, the fun stuff that can be done in a plane. I want to inspire kids to get into aviation.”

If you’d like to see Andrew display his aerobatic skills, visit www.carbonfiberairshows.com for a list of upcoming airshows. The site also features photographs and videos of Andrew in flight.

Andrew has been flying exhibitions for seven years in his own airplane, a G202 carbon fiber kit plane. He carefully orchestrates every show from the narration script for the announcer, to the music that plays while he flies, to the complex aerial sequences that he performs. First, he fuels his plane, loads smoke oil, completes FAA paperwork, and gets his script to the announcer and music to the sound person so that he won’t be rushing around at the last minute. Second only to the aircraft pre-flight inspection, the pilot briefing is the 42

most important step in getting ready to fly. At the briefing, he learns when he will perform. Then, he says, “I sit down and think it through. I fly a pretty complicated set of routines spaced tightly together, all of which I have carefully worked out and practiced over time. Special considerations are wind—its speed and direction, whether it is blowing off or on crowd—and the crowd line.” He’s allowed to fly within 500 feet of the crowd line. Andrew appreciates his mentors,

M A R C H 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

Debby Rihn Harvey and Jan Collmer, for cultivating his interest in flying and helping him to develop the necessary skills to be an aerobatic pilot. And Andrew wants to share his own experiences with others. “I want to show people, especially kids, the fun stuff that can be done in a plane. I want to inspire kids to get into aviation,” he says. He’d like families to make it out to an airshow to see him and other pilots take to the sky. Who knows? Maybe a son or daughter will be inspired to learn to dance in the sky as well. 

After working with Keller, we discovered that they have dependability, quality of pricing and quality of workmanship, and they completed the project and finished out our product with 100% satisfaction. Why would you go with anyone else when you can have this? I have been in business, so I know what it’s like to start one as a kid. Nick is very easy to talk to and he is rich in integrity. You don’t find people like Nick in the world of business today. We are blessed to have such good people working for us. –Ben Powell

The San Gabriel River’s beauty can draw us in. It beckons us to come close, to be still and listen to the water flowing freely to places unseen— places beyond the end of the highway and even beyond gravel roads, places where deer pause to drink and where fish swim, unnoticed. The river calls us to take a break from the bustling city life around it to experience the contrasts of nature. Three forks of the San Gabriel River run through Georgetown, embracing homes, businesses, and parks. Bridges old and new connect the city over the river’s clear water. If the river could speak, it might tell riveting tales from hundreds of years ago, tales about the lives of those who crossed it, fished in it, swam in it, and even died along it. The San Gabriel River begins in Burnet County and flows east, stretching 120 miles, and ends in Milam County as it joins the Little River. The river was inhabited by local Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, and Comanche for many years before it was discovered by the Spanish in 52

the eighteenth century. It’s easy to imagine Native Americans camped out along the banks, sustained by the river’s abundant fish and surrounding wildlife, and shaded by the same imposing limestone cliffs we marvel at today.

THE SAN XAVIER RIVER

M A R C H 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

In 1707, Diego Ramón set out

from Coahuila, Mexico, with the Ramón Expedition to explore areas north of the Rio Grande. Priest Fray Isidro Felix Espinosa, among others, accompanied Ramón. When the group crossed the San Gabriel River in the summer of 1716, Fray Espinosa named it the Rio de San Xavier for Francisco de Xavier, a well-known missionary who was sainted in 1622.

Thirty years later, in 1746, a group of Native American Indians from the Yojuane, Deadose, Mayeye, and Ervipiame groups traveled all the way to the San Antonio mission to plead with Mariano Francisco de los Dolores y Viana to establish a mission in their territory along the San Xavier River. Father Dolores, who knew and was friendly with almost every major tribe along the Brazos River, told them to go back to the river and wait. They set up camp along the San Xavier River, in present Milam County, and waited for Father Dolores and Father Francisco Xavier Ortiz. When the padres finally arrived in the fall of that year, they got right to work teaching and converting the tribes to Christianity and eventually establishing more missions along the San Xavier River. By 1755, after years of disagreements, attacks, drought, and epidemics, the San Xavier Missions were abandoned and relocated to San Antonio and San Saba.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN AND A NEW NAME As Stephen F. Austin was settling hundreds of families in Texas in the 1820s, new maps were being sketched. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Stephen F. Austin mistakenly wrote “San Javriel” where the San Xavier River appeared on his 1829 map. This name somehow evolved over the years, and by the time Williamson County 

was founded and Georgetown became the county seat in 1848, the river was known as the San Gabriel. In the 1800s, four major crossings, named for families living nearby, were established in Williamson County along the river: Booty, Russell (later Jenkins), Box, and Hunt. Small communities, with schools, churches, cemeteries, postal stations, and a gin, were established near the crossings. Farmers and ranchers in the Williamson County area often traveled by horse or buggy to a picturesque spot along the river known today as San Gabriel Park. They brought food and spread quilts beside the river and under the cottonwood trees. They attended reunions, revivals, and other county and city functions, including Williamson County Old Settlers’ Association events. In 1869 Sam Houston drew a large crowd there when he delivered a passionate speech outlining his political views in hopes of being elected governor of Texas. The spot didn’t always host happy occasions, though. For some 20 years, it was also the site for Williamson County’s public executions, beginning in 1886 with a man who killed his wife. A crowd of six thou-

54

sand or so gathered along the river to watch as the sentence of hanging from a tree was carried out near the present-day low water crossing in San Gabriel Park. Today, on any given afternoon in San Gabriel Park, you can see families offering bits of bread to ducks, runners jogging and walkers trekking along the river trail, and usually a fisherman casting out a line under the shade of a tree. Splashes and laughter echo off the bluffs in the summertime at Blue Hole, and passersby rest on a rock bench along

Scenic Drive just to take in the river and a sunset. I can’t think of Georgetown without thinking of the San Gabriel River. I visit the river often and always catch myself looking down at it while driving over the bridges that span it, trying to see how far it flows. I wonder about the early explorers’ impressions when they came upon the river. Were they merely thankful to find water? Were they wowed by its beauty? Could they imagine that it would one day be the heart of a place like Georgetown? 

What does it take to pull off Georgetown’s Market Days? Step into Laurie Wendel’s shoes and find out. By Rachel Brownlow Lund  Photos by Rudy Ximenez

S

Something magical happens in the early mornings on the second Saturday of March through November: Historic downtown Georgetown transforms into an open-air market. If you’ve attended a Downtown Georgetown Association’s Market Day, you’ve certainly seen crafters, artisans, and food and retail vendors from around Texas, lining the streets to peddle their wares. You’ve probably heard musicians serenade shoppers with live music—from instrumental jazz to strong country vocals. And you may even have spotted Laurie Wendel, the lead coordinator behind Georgetown’s ever-growing pop-up market. Then again, perhaps you haven’t. Like a hungry hummingbird, on Market Days Laurie is seemingly everywhere at once, vibrating along Georgetown’s 7th and 8th Streets, chatting with vendors and quelling any issues that may arise. It takes supreme verve to coordinate more than 80 vendors and pull off such a sizeable monthly event, but on nine Saturdays a year, Laurie accomplishes just that with the help of Bob Case, DGA’s second coordinator. Georgetown View was curious to see what it takes to pull off such an event, so we shadowed Laurie on a typical Market Day:

at ’em, drinking her morning coffee and preparing for what will become a fast-paced blur of a day. “I’m not a morning person,” Laurie admits. “I mean, I usually get up at 8:00 or 8:30, but I find that getting up at 4:30 in the morning excites me and gets me motivated.”

town about five years ago. “Almost surreal, but peaceful. You’d never know that in a few hours there’ll be 1,500 to 2,000 people enjoying Market Day. And that number continues to grow.”

6:15 AM: TO MARKET, TO MARKET

Rain or shine, vendors from around Texas set up shop in downtown Georgetown, lining 7th and 8th Streets with white merchant tents and transforming the historic Square into a quaint open-air marketplace. A typical Market Day attracts more than 80 merchants, with space to fit up to 125 or more vendors. “Vendor booth locations are 

At a time when most people are still sleeping, Laurie drives downtown and begins marking the streets with booth numbers so that vendors and musicians can locate their assigned spots when they arrive. “It’s a quiet time,” says Laurie, who fell in love with the Square when she and her husband moved to George-

listed on the website, so most of the vendors already know where they’re going before they arrive,” explains Laurie. “But Bob and I are there if they need any help…. And it’s so nice to see vendors helping each other set up their tents. It brings a feeling of camaraderie to the event.”

9 AM: OPEN FOR BUSINESS This is when the magic happens. Vendors selling items such as homemade jewelry, soaps, lotions, gourmet jams, candy, and beef jerky are now officially open for business.

During the three years she’s been Market Days’ coordinator, Laurie has seen vendors display an array of homegrown and handcrafted wares, from farm-fresh honey and delectable sweets to steampunk-inspired jewelry and handmade birdhouses. “One of our goals as the DGA is to do everything we can to help the merchants, and by bringing more foot traffic to the square, Market Days does do that,” says Laurie. “Not only do the street vendors profit from it, but shops on the Square see an uptick as well.”

Market Days take place 9 AM–4 PM on the Square in downtown Georgetown on the second Saturday of each month, March through November. For more information go to www.thegeorgetownsquare.com. Vendor inquiries and application requests can be emailed to dga.vendors@yahoo.com.

4 PM: CLOSING TIME Market Day officially closes at 4 PM, and at that time vendors are encouraged to tear down their tents as quickly as possible. “The DGA is in charge of cleaning up the Square after Market Days, so we’ll stay there until that last vendor is off the street,” says Laurie. “Some vendors may not realize that if they stay there later, we have to stay there later, too.”

5:30 PM: CLEAN UP Once the market has closed, the shoppers have gone home, and the vendors have torn down their tents, Laurie and her team straighten up the Square, making sure to leave it as it was when they arrived.

7 PM: THREE CHEERS FOR A JOB WELL DONE After the Market Day area is sufficiently tidied, Laurie and Bob Case head over to Georgetown Winery to appreciate what they’ve accomplished. “It’s kind of a tradition of ours,” says Laurie. “We go to the winery and we celebrate: Either it was a really bad day—maybe we had a vendor who was just ‘urgh,’” she says, laughing. “Or maybe it was a great day—successful, and all our vendors were friendly.”

8:30 PM: HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN Laurie calls it a night. Come Monday, it will be time to start planning the next month’s Market Day or helping to plan one of the DGA’s other big events: First Fridays, Georgetown Art & Wine on the Square, Boo Bash! or The Christmas Stroll. “It’s a simple job when you’re here at Market Day,” says Laurie, “but 95% of the job isn’t the actual day. It’s the planning process—getting vendors to participate, getting applications ready, trying to build the market for the following month.” 

Christopher Johnson fell in love with fly fishing as a boy. Now, he’s winning awards as he passes on that passion. By Mikaela Cain  Photos by Rudy Ximenez

Holding the old fly fishing book in his hand, Christopher Johnson ran a finger over the date stamps that indicated each time the item had been checked out from the Round Rock Public Library. “Those are my date stamps,” he realized. He had checked out the same books and magazines over and over while learning to fly fish when he was in elementary school. Little did Christopher know that, when he grew up, he would own a fly fishing business, Living Waters Fly Fishing, and would get to pass on the knowledge that he’d taught himself. Christopher’s passion for fishing began early in his childhood when, homework complete, he would often ride his bike down to local creeks and ponds to fish. “I played basketball one year. We were undefeated and did really well, but I didn’t enjoy it,” he recalls. “The whole time I was in practice, I was thinking about fishing.” Growing up, Christopher had the opportunity to visit fly fishing destinations far beyond local fishing holes on Brushy Creek and the San Gabriel River. His father, a full-time missionary, frequently took him on short-term mission trips to countries such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and the Cayman Islands. Christopher always packed a fly rod and caught some of the most prestigious game fish in the Caribbean. An experienced fly angler can spend years fishing before catching a permit (a type of game fish), but in Honduras Christopher caught the first permit he ever cast a fly to. As a teenager, he started his own guiding business. He also worked at a large outdoor retailer that carried a selection of fly fishing equipment, but only some products met local demand. The store commissioned Christopher to remodel its fly fishing selection, but when store management took his plan to the corporate buyers, they turned it down. 

I N T E G R I T Y • E X P E R I E N C E • I N D E P E N D E N C E F O R YO U R G O A L S • H O P E S • D R E A M S Georgetown View sits down with Scott Olson of Upstream Investment Partners and learns the caring concerned way he uses his expertise to help you plan your future. Scott Olson offers appointments in Georgetown, by appointment.

Q A

What can you tell me about Scott Olson and your ties to Georgetown? My wife Luci and I live in Georgetown with our two children: Alex Tori Hansen. We are active in the community through River Rock Bible Church, Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Heroes Night Out Board of Directors, Sertoma President, and VFW and MOWW veteran organizations. We love golfing, jogging and racquetball when we are not touring the Hill Country on our motorcycle

Q A

What can you tell me about your experience? After building a solid foundation as a financial advisor with a national brand, I went independent just over four years ago. I’ve been helping clients reach their financial goals for more than eight years now.

Q A

What exactly is Upstream Investment Partners? Upstream is a network of independent Financial Advisors, over 140 strong, across the country. Perhaps more important is who is behind the Upstream name. My back office support comes from our broker/dealer, Sigma Financial

74

Corporation; #1 rated Independent Broker/ Dealer by “Registered Rep” magazine in 2012 and 2013. National Financial is a service provider to Sigma Financial Corp. National Financial is a Fidelity Investments® company and a leading provider of clearing and custody solutions for over 30 years.

Q

Much of what you do is very confusing for many investors. How do I know I am making the right decisions with my savings? I think that’s an area where I’m different than many advisors out there. I’m big on education and I take as much time as necessary to ensure my clients understand the pros AND cons of investments being considered, BEFORE they place that investment. Another way I like to improve understanding is by putting a comprehensive plan in place and reviewing that plan at least annually to make sure we’re still on track to reach the client’s goals. By doing the planning up front, we can help ensure that clients are not taking on more risk than is necessary to reach their goals.

A

M A R C H 2 0 1 5     G E O R G E T O W N V I E W

Q

Is there any way to sort out all of the different statements that someone receives? One of the tools I use regularly gives clients a consolidated financial statement, pulling account information from not only accounts at Upstream, but also their 401k, bank accounts, and credit card info – all in one spot! Clients can access this information 24/7 by computer, and also through their smartphone. There is no additional charge to clients for this service.

A

Q A

What types of clients do you most closely relate to? I have a passion for helping small business owners understand their retirement plan options. I served in the Army National Guard as enlisted, then an officer, totaling 20 years – so I can relate to veterans. Honesty and integrity are huge with me. I also have a technical degree in Non-Destructive Testing, an industry many people have never heard of, but helps me understand and explain technical analysis of markets, and relate to engineer types. Because I emphasize education, I also enjoy working with clients that are new to investing – whether a death, divorce or other situation has required they are brought up to speed where their financial health is concerned.

food Whole Grilled Fish  With a dish this simple, you’ll need the freshest possible fish. Score the flesh down to the bone to encourage even cooking and be patient when making the first turn. If you oil the grill well and give the fish time to cook through, the skin will not stick. Ingredients: 1 5-pound, 2 2.5-pound, or 3 1.5-pound whole fish, such as sea bass or snapper, head on Kosher salt ¼ cup olive oil 2 limes, thinly sliced ¼ cup fresh lime juice ½ bunch basil, leaves removed, reserve stems ½ bunch cilantro, leaves removed, reserve stems Preparation: 1. Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or heat gas grill to medium-high. 2. Score fish: Cut 1 slash lengthwise down to the bone, then crosswise in 2 places, spacing apart. Repeat on the other side. 3. Season fish cavity and skin with salt. Drizzle with ¼ cup olive oil. 4. Stuff some of the lime slices (reserve a few) and herb stems inside the fish. 5. Clean and oil grill grate well. Grill fish, resisting the urge to turn it until skin is nicely crisp and charred and flesh is flaky and opaque down to the bone. (This can take 6 to 15 minutes, depending on size of fish. Don't mess around with it until it's ready.) 6. Place a metal spatula underneath fish (a pair of metal tongs on top of fish also helps for support), and lift and gently roll over to the other side. Cook until flesh is flaky and opaque down to the bone, 6 to 15 minutes. 7. Use a small knife to check for doneness; if it slides easily through the thickest part of flesh, fish is done. If not, finish cooking fish on grill or in a 450° F oven. 8. Place fish on a serving platter; drizzle oil and lime juice over. Garnish with reserved lime slices, basil leaves, and cilantro.

Bacon and Scallion Hushpuppies  Ingredients: 4 bacon slices 6 cups vegetable oil 1 cup yellow cornmeal ½ cup all-purpose flour 2½ tsp baking powder ¾ tsp salt 1⁄8 tsp black pepper 1 large egg ¾ cup whole milk 4 scallions, sliced thin Preparation: 1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Transfer with a slotted spatula to paper towels to drain, and then crumble to pieces. 2. Preheat oven to 300° F. 3. Heat oil in a 5-quart heavy pot over high heat until 320° F on a thermometer. 4. While the oil is heating, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. 5. Whisk together egg and milk in another bowl. Add the cornmeal mixture and stir until combined. 6. Stir the bacon and scallions into the batter until combined. 7. Working in small batches, carefully add 1 Tbsp of batter per hushpuppy to hot oil and fry, turning, a few minutes until golden. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

Say Hello To Georgetown's Only Certified Senior Housing Professional, Virginia Lazenby.

. Why Did You Pursue The Certified Senior Housing Professional (CSHP) Designation? I’ve always been very passionate about serving seniors. I have spent the past year immersed in the best training available to real estate professionals committed to helping seniors explore living options, based on a thorough understanding of the full range of options available to them. I am very proud to have earned the Certified Senior Housing Professional (CSHP) designation awarded by the Seniors Real Estate Institute.

how emotionally draining the entire process can be. My Certified Senior Housing Professional designation equips me to serve the distinct needs of seniors and their families with an unsurpassed level of compassion, expertise and connectedness. What Is Changing In The Senior Real Estate Landscape? Demographic shifts and improvements in life expectancy have given rise to senior housing options that far exceed those of previous decades. CSHPs are not only in touch with the full range of options within our communities, we have the specific skills needed to help seniors get where they want to go – unraveling the complexities of downsizing and selling a family home.

and structure. To that end, my team has been assembling a portfolio of concierge services selected for my clients' special benefits. We are also offering a downsizing guide: Downsizing Made Easy. With a little bit of extra guidance and knowledge from those who have gone before us, the process can be vastly simplified, and that is what Downsizing Made Easy is all about. I love sharing it with my clients and their families. Ready to start the conversation? White River Fog

M

y husband and I love to fish the White River in Arkansas. Catching trout is always a bonus, but floating down river at sunrise while patches of fog hang above the 50-degree water is just plain magical. The layer of fog swirls and clings to the surface of the water, making fishing boats appear is if they’re floating on clouds. Nothing can be heard but an oar clanking against the side of a boat and, occasionally, a distant motor propelling fishermen upstream. By mid-morning the air can get still and muggy as the sun begins to burn through the fog. Even so, we stay on the water and try to catch our limit. I cast my line once again and allow the bait to drift with the flow of the river. Suddenly, the wind blows a patch of fog in our direction, and the welcome breeze feels just like air conditioning. – Carol Hutchison
