UNIVERSAL ACCESS TRAIL & INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS PYATT LAKE: The Bill Carls Nature Preserve August, 2020
An ongoing effort to allow people of all ages and abilities to experience the wonders of nature is coming to one of the Conservancy’s oldest and most treasured preserves.
Your gift will:
Boardwalk portions of the trail at Pyatt Lake: The Bill Carls Nature Preserve were put at risk as Lake Michigan began its march toward record high levels. Continuously rising water eventually swamped both overlook platforms and most of the boardwalk that led to them earlier this year.
• Allow people of all ages and abilities to immerse themselves in this popular and beautiful nature preserve
The good news is this is a wonderful opportunity to replace those boardwalks and platforms with universally accessible (UA) versions and create the first UA trail on Old Mission Peninsula. This comes on the heels of successful UA trails at Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Preserve, Arcadia Marsh, Timbers Recreation Area and the St. Clair Lake - Six Mile Lake Nature Preserve, all constructed during the ongoing Campaign for Generations. Like those projects, construction will carefully follow UA standards to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience with mobility issues. As has been the case with those previous projects, the new boardwalk at Pyatt Lake will improve the experiences of everyone that visits this special place. Even though they are designed to accommodate people with mobility issues, UA trails are welcomed by everyone, particularly families with young children. Feedback on our previous trails has been tremendous. An aggregate trail, boardwalk, parking lot and two decks – all to UA standards – are planned as part of this project. Construction is expected to begin late this summer and finish by early November.

• Replace current infrastructure with state-of-the-art, durable new construction • Help create the first UA trail on Old Mission Peninsula
The total cost of this project, which is included in the Campaign for Generations, is $407,497*. *In the event that fundraising support for a project exceeds the original project fundraising goal, the Conservancy will allocate the overage to purposes that the Conservancy determines further its mission, such as organizational costs, to protect additional land, or to care for the long-term stewardship of protected land.
