In “Remembering Father Jesus Baza Duenas Through Oral Histories,” Judy S. Flores and William “Bill” M. Paulino present their research into Inarajan villagers’ written and oral accounts of Father Jesus Baza Duenas, who was an important model of courage, persistence in faith and resistance to the Japanese during their occupation of Guam.

Victoria-Lola Leon Guerrero and Monaeka Flores’ presentation, “I Maga’taotao Siha: The Elders Who Inspire Us to Decolonize,” explains how Independent Guåhan, at its assemblies, honors a maga’taotao: a hero or notable figure that has helped guide the island and CHamoru people on their quest for self-determination.
