In an effort to sustain their organization’s ongoing education programs, Traditions Affirming Our Seafaring Ancestry (TASA), has embarked on a social enterprise just in time for the holiday season. Based at the traditional canoe house at the Paseo de Susana park in Hagåtña, while refurbishing and building canoes, members are also using their skills to create “made-to-order” gifts! You can choose between scaled replicas of Micronesia’s distinct single-hulled canoes, from the open ocean sakmån complete with a woven pandanus sail, to the smaller vessel, galaide, used inside the reef with a wooden paddle. TASA is also prepared to accept special orders for a full-sized hand-carved wood paddle that can be used as designed or can serve as a great display and conversation piece! Besides wood carving, traditional seafarers are also very skilled at rope lashing. TASA can give your favorite kulo an intricate lashing that also provides extra protection and a secure handle!
