Hello, I am Guangzu. I am graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture and studied at Kingston University (first year). During my undergraduate studies, my main focus was on architectural renovation and social architecture. Additionally, I have a strong interest in urban planning and the interior spaces of buildings because I believe that urban recycling will be one of the dominant trends in future cities. Moreover, I think that future buildings in cities will pay more attention to the influence of interior spaces on people’s emotions.

The site is located on a vast and peaceful lawn, next to a dense balsam fir forest, willow trees and pond. The grass is low and the trees are high in the grounds, creating a unique sight-seeing area in the middle, which is what makes the balsam fir forest so attractive.

closer to nature, to hold hands as a family, to forget about stress and to break the urban stereotype of neighbourhood. It is a special experience. Everyone is drawn to the blue sky, the white clouds, the stream and the woods. Children can run in the continuous space under the colonnade, dash into the big lawn and play in the woods. Living in a natural environment, children observe aquatic plants during the day, listen to insects and learn about the diversity of life. At night, they can look up at the night sky. The gathering space intervenes in the environment in a way that the gathering space is formed by succession of undulating roofs crossing and functional spaces enclosing the courtyard, which can be used as an open-air cinema and concert venue. The space is a scale that can be adapted to both children and adults; children do not feel that the building is tall at the lowest point of the eaves and can reach up and touch the eaves. The camp has gone so far as to create as much space as possible for children to play. “In the Struggle for Survival” -Manningtree Waterfront Centre Third year project Inside the forest -Among the wilderness The people’s centre -The job center for Newham citizens Second year project Other work -Drawing First year - Third year Competition 2022 Micro Settlement Light Construction TINY HOUSE Competition 2023 The Home of Shadows
“In the Struggle for Survival”
-Manningtree Waterfront Centre
Third year project
The project aims to transform the Manningtree waterfront area into a public space that accommodates a community kindergarten and park. It is intended to alleviate the parenting pressures faced by local residents. Additionally, the waterfront area will be returned to the Manningtree town, and the Jewson company will be relocated to a nearby industrial zone. The site will then be renovated into a public park, connecting it with the high street area, thereby revitalizing the community.

Due to the existing space not meeting the government’s requirements for children’s space, I have added eight new wooden pillars on the existing ones to support beams in order to extend the floor and increase the available space.
The existing building is an industrial structure designed for storing construction materials, therefore it lacks any insulation or soundproofing measures. To achieve insulation and soundproofing effects, I have used new wool insulation, soundproof panels, and plywood. Additionally, I have applied soundproof paint on the interior walls to isolate indoor and outdoor noise. Moreover, I have chosen blue and green colors to help maintain a calm emotional state for the children.

TINY HOUSE Competition 2023
The Home of Shadows
The project is located on the ground floor of a 30 year old residential building in the Haizhu district of Guangzhou, China. The surrounding facilities are outdated and the natural light and ventilation is poor. The interior of the project has a total area of 22 square metres and is inhabited by a young post- 90s couple, whose original living space is relatively homogeneous, with very poor indoor lighting and in need of an upgrade. The design firstly considers the problem of poor indoor lighting and increases the light area on the original light opening, adding a movable sunroom to improve the problem of poor indoor natural lighting. This allows the maximum amount of natural light to reach the interior and also adds more usable space for activities. The overall spatial design of the project is also based on the couple’s professional and living needs with a range of work and living spaces.
The project as a whole has been developed with sustainability in mind. The use of sustainable timber (recycled from various sources) and light-transmitting sunlight panels has greatly increased the amount and length of light in the interior.
Reconfiguring the windows in the existing apartment’s entrance hall and bathroom area to channel natural light into the interior, while also repositioning the existing partitions within the apartment to meet the residents’ lighting needs at different times.
After the renovation, natural light is more easily able to enter the interior of the apartment compared to the previous lighting.
