EXTERIOR DESIGN

GUIDING PRINCIPLES COMMUNITY, CULTURE, & HISTORY The building design is inspired directly from the Coney Island community. A simple metaphor of earth, sea, and sky inform material selections, relate building massing setbacks, and root the podium in a contextual scale, to create a building that respects the neighborhood. The original Native American inhabitants of the region, the Lenape, called this area Narrioch. This name has been attributed the meaning of “land without shadows” or “always in light” describing how its south facing beaches always remained in sunlight. The envelope will take advantage of the distant views, and manage the daylight with an engineered sunshade system

JIAHUI INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL (SD & DD Phase, Mar. 2014 - Sep. 2014)

PHOTO OF STUDY MODEL 工作模型照片

Jianhui international hospital is a private hospital located in Shanghai. We aimed to design a hospital connected to nature. Patient tower is located to the north of lower outpatient tower to provide maximum sun light to both. The garden between them provides outdoor space for patients, families, and staff. The main entry lobby is inside the east narrow bar. So visitors will see directly into the central garden through the glass wall of the lobby before they enter the hospital. Facade design uses terracotta ribbons to control sunlight and views. For patient tower, the ribbons open up towards south and north but become almost solid on east and west facade.

Positioned at the junction between the Central Pedestrian Boulevard and the Waterfront Path, the Pedestrian Bridge serves as a vital link for pedestrian and bicyclists. In addition to providing clearance at the boulevard and road, the bridge negotiates an approximately 4m elevation change between the boulevard grade level and the top of the levee.

FCJZ Atelier designed master plan for Novartis' new

NOVARTIS SHANGHAI CAMPUS C5 LAB BUILDING DESIGN (July. 2008 - Nov. 2008 )

campus near Shanghai. The campus design gives each building its own courtyard and allows each building enjoy views to two other courtyards by its sides. Later FCJZ designed C5 building. Two important ideas in C5 lab building design are open lab and regional culture facade. For facade design, we like the shading function and materiality provided by the roof tile of Chinese vernacular architecture and tried to use a innovative way to apply it to facade.

OFFICE OF TAIWAN GLASS SCHEME I (Feb. 2009 - June 2009 )

The client is a glass manufacturer, and this is their new office building in Huai'an. We wanted the whole building could express the materiality of glass. The site is in a rural area with many trees. The structure of the new building mimic trees. Those courtyards inside the building not only let natural light in but also loosely divide the plan into different departments. When one walks inside the building, one feel like walking in a forest.

KIMBELL ART MUSEUM EXTENTION ( Date: Jan. 2011 - May 2011 ) The new extentsion of Kimbell Art Museum is designed to accomodate large scale contemporary art works. The new extension project is located to the back side of Kimbell occupying the previous road to avoid destroying the landscape in front of Kimbell. Also, this location provides an easy access for visitors after they finish their tour of Kimbell. The landscape walls outside Kimbell designed by Kahn are extended to enclose a courtyard for the new building. The supporting programs are integrated into the volume to the east of the courtyard. The Gallery is a simple box with channel glasses facade floating above the courtyard.

INTERPLAY WITH NATURE ( Jan. 2012 - May 2012 )

The site faces two water ecologies --- rainwater coming down from drainage way of the hill and Mississippi river fluctuating constantly. The landscape design starts from playing with these two features and make them visible. Those wired shape ponds which mimic the landform of the natural drainage sustain rainwater as well as visualize water level change of the river since they are connected to the river underneath and have different depth. Landform between those ponds helps to guide water. Different plants grow on different elevations related to water level. The narrower part of the park to the west is close to the entrance and accommodates visitors' activities, the rest of the park is reserved for nature. The building is an eco-learning center which is located between two parts of the park (one part is for visitors' activities and another part is for nature). The qualities of the park set the tone for the design of the building. The building follows the softly undulating surrounding landscape and intertwines with it. The building is built by light weight structure (tensile structure and wooden lattice shell) and replenishable material.
