INSTITUTIONS & IDEALOGY

CAN A SCHOOL GROW?

This studio investigates institutions and the ideas and values that underpin institutions through the design of a new secondary college to be located in Dutton Park. It extends previous investigations into educational paradigms and archetypes. The design intention aims to challenge the notion of vertical school design and questions how organisation hierarchy within a school can be decentralised. The key design strategy lies in the massing configuration which allows students to move around the school through the liminal void spaces that creates contemplative journeys for both students and staff. The strategies of voids space allow for adaptability to future needs by allowing spaces to be flexible and further developed shaped by future pedagogy needs.

In the city of Logan, affordable housing is the current forefront of the social and political agenda. The agenda of this report is to present the design proposition and feasibility of a public housing project located in Logan Central. The design proposal aims to be a trailblazer of a Catalyst model for sustainable low-cost social housing. The key drivers behind the proposal looks into the Master Plan and Project objectives derived from background analysis and key issues. The design strategies aims to achieve the project objective of fostering a close knitted community that looks out for one other and the neighbourhood. The design strategies starts from attempting to achieve its objectives from massing scale and down into the individual units.

The ‘SOHO’ and ‘Student Accomodation” apartment is intended to facilitate the trend of Studio office home office which is a finiancially feasible option for young entrepreneurs look to work and live under the same roof. With the site located right across from the train station, the site becomes convieniently accessible to get around Queensland. The units targets non-permanent tenants especially young entrepreneurs and students looking for cheap accomodations. The ‘ Student Accomodation’ units can also be target towards Single parent or young family. With the use of CLT panels, the units can be easily converted from SOHO to Student Accomodation or vice versa

The shoplot residential units above shoplots is a high flexible unit to meet the demand of young families or single parents. A simple low-cost unit with only 1 common bathroom reduces the cost by having spend lesser on plumbing and cost added to faciliate sanitation. With its shopfront facing Garfield street, the shoplot is intended for cafeteria to meet the needs of the residents where food can be easily purchased within the compounds of the building.

The shophouse residential unit connected above the retail unit is a highly viable option for entrepreneurs dealing with retail. The back office is convieniently located behind the retail units with its back of house connected to the carpark allowing easement of loading and unloading goods. UTOPIAN URBANISM 21

As part of the design studio brief, the competition, called Monument Avenue: General Demotion/ General Devotion, asks participants to reconsider Monument Avenue: its role as an historic urban boulevard, its viability as a 5.4 mile interurban connector, its presence in Richmond given the city’s emergence as a diverse and progressive city, its significance in the history of the United States and in the current debate about Confederate statues in public spaces. The recent series of incidents and social justice movements have reignited discussions about the future of Confederate statues around the country.

22

23

The site was initially designed to encourage the westward development of the City of Richmond, the original drawing of Monument Avenue showed a street accommodating a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and extending west with a treelined grassy median. Developers unveiled the Lee statue on May 29, 1890, twenty years after Lee’s death. Building rapidly increased on Monument Avenue from 1900 to 1925 as prominent regional and national architects designed houses, churches and apartment buildings. As development extended west, the Stuart and Davis statues were erected in 1907, the Jackson statue in 1919, the Maury statue in 1929. 16

MNEMONIC TOWER The mnemonic tower wrapped around the equestrian statue of robert e lee aims to execute the notion of creating palimpsest and address to the pressing issue for the constant need for urban design solution for the monuments. The mnemonic tower is a cross between a memorial and a public repository archive. The design impetus aims to allows the memories of the public to be written over in layers with an intention to obscure the monument and eventually turning it into a time capsule - a monument buried by memories.

MNEMONIC RIBBON

The mnemonic ribbon serves as a connective vein along monument avenue that allows photo memory of the public to be archived while establishing urban connectivity with key historical buildings. On the ground level, photos deposited by the public both in digital or printed are processed and curated in temperature controlled environment and kept in light controlled viewing boxes. The photo archive viewing box on the upper level is magnified by layers of heat insulated glass above the viewing box on the ground level. The viewing deck on the second level serves not only as a outdoor public viewing gallery but also serves as a bridge that connects to key historical buildings along monument avenue

MNEMONIC REPOSITORY

The mnemonic Repository building is a hybrid an archive building, reference library and a multiple of the mnemonic tower. With reference to the master plan for richmond, va for 2000-2020, it’s been observed that libraries in richmond has seen the need to shift towards a digitally driven library thus the storage for old books are accumulated. The design of the mnemonic repository aims to house the confederate monuments along with archive materials. The movement of the monument into the mnemonic repository building acts a layer of palimpsest that cuts the monument from its existing site layered by contextualised material. The mnemonic repository is a repertoire of the mnemonic tower that. The strategies of voids allows the individual repository archive within the building to be shaped by the ever changing needs and idealogical shift. The mnemonic repository envisions a utopia of integrated information gathered by intellects and memories of civilians.

MULTIMODAL EXPERIENCE 31

Introducing a mixed - reality platform that defies the boundaries of spreading knowledge.. Through this platform all archived exhibitions can be programmed into the SLQ Mixed Reality portals to enable users to experienced all archived exhibitions. The goal of the project is to mitigate the issues of library’s excessive load archived exhibition materials which are not accessible to the general crowd once they go into storage. The project also suggest an intervention to strategically re-engineer the library to empower its digital forefront.

Data collected from archived materials will be programmed into the Mixed reality template mapping of the knowledge walk.

The uploaded content of the Mixed reality walk will be uploaded on to the localised server.

Uploaded content will be transmitted via 5G frequency routers set up to 10Typical phase 15 meters interval Phase 1 : Budget for exhibition to provide zero Phase 2 : handling logistics and latency and lag free event schedule connection.
