EDITOR’S NOTE It’s that time of year where we celebrate the contributions of black people to the world and honour some of the legends who helped shape every aspect of modern society. For us at GUAP, it is deeper than that. In a time where there is rising racial tension and division, we chose to dedicate this issue to offer different narrative. For once, whilst still acknowledging what needs to be improved in our social system, let’s focus on ADETUNJI and celebrate the divine greatnessJIDE of our talents and the ability to spread love and create life that connects us all. For the 6th Issue ‘The Pride’ edition, we are proud to have one of South London’s finest visual artists and fashion influencers grace the cover. I bet you didn’t know we had a Black Wall Street! By Shanice Mears It’s funny how we go through twelve years of compulsory education, we learn about Pythagoras’s theorem, where Shakespeare lived, periodic tables and my favourite Hitler! School wanted us to learn geography, science and to remain specific history, yet they keep from us the truth of our real history. It’s fair to say when I was learning about the civil rights movement in history I thought my school were doing alright at least. But hey! I’m not saying watching roots during my history lesson and learning about the speech Martin Luther King Jr - ‘I have a Dream’ made wasn’t enlightening because it definitely was, it just seems that at that age I didn’t know any better so of course it was enlightening I almost had no choice but to appreciate my ‘black history’ then whatever it was because I was just glad I could learn about it.

BLACK ARTICLE

95 years ago, which marks less than a century our community knew what it really meant to be, black owned; from banks to barbers and like they say in the video ‘we didn’t need to go downtown’ we had everything we needed and more. Imagine coming from a place where it wasn’t the norm to go to any other race that owned businesses but your own! That must be something, because I don’t even really remember the last time I seen a street of shops owned by black people only. Now I’m not saying that we should all boycott Tesco’s tomorrow but what am I saying is we need to remember where we come from, what we had and we no longer have. This is not due to us being unable but to us being the colour we are today. Black Wall Street although yes, it existed in Greenwood, America (I’m well aware this is the U.K)- That was still a part of our identity and what we stood for, we were educated, united and strong in numbers.

Black Wall Street was taken away from us due to envy, fear and hate.

This is the stuff they don’t tell you or teach you, the history that got lost in our history books and blacklisted in the media. This is the history that you’re parents too, might not know because as generations went on we were made to forget and not mention what the KKK were made of. The history that doesn’t tell you that white men and women in America 95 years ago plotted together to kill more than 300 American black people in addition to leaving more than 9,000 homeless. By using the excuse of assault from a young black man to another white lady. But maybe in them days a court order and sentence just wasn’t enough so instead they burnt down a nation and resulted in lynching. I’m going to take two steps back for a minute because maybe I sound angry, maybe if your reading this I seem a little upset. But your wrong I’m neither upset nor angry. I’m tired and frustrated but mostly I’m sad. So instead of crying I’m writing this to make everyone aware that Black history is not just a month but a lifetime of experiences, some of which we have no idea happened or has had impact on us today. 18

BLACK WALL STREET

We had our own wolves in our own wall street and they deserve to be spoken about and passed on in education. So‌To all my brothers and sisters, you are more than capable, more than worthy, you are not disliked and do not deserve to be mistreated. However it’s just unfortunate that although we were born great, we were also born misunderstood.

AFRICA. “The concept behind the, Africa series initially stemmed from my interest in traditional African hairstyles. The detailing and intricacy with which many of these were designed and woven together was something that fascinated me. The photographs were taken just before I had learned of the ban on natural hair in South Africa’s Pretoria Girls High School. It was an outrage to me and I wanted to use the images as my photographic response to the events. I also wanted to illustrate my thoughts; accompanying the pictures with captions such as: “Leave my hair alone”; “Black beauty is not to be confined. Let us out and let us breathe” and “Unapologetic”. It was my way of protesting against the practice of prohibiting black females from wearing their hair in its natural state. No one has the right to take away another person’s freedom, and no one has the right to take away a person’s God given crown.” - Nicole Osula Photo: Nicole Osula Hair & Makeup: Nicole Osula Creative Direction: Nicole Osula Instagram: @_heiwatoai Model: Rachel Boonin Instagram: @jacquesraytrill
