Guaruma Monthly August 2011
Guaruma is a Honduras based non-profit organization promoting environmental awareness and conservation through educational programs in the Rio Cangrejal watershed on the Eastern border of the Pico Bonito National Park. To accomplish this, Guaruma provides after school classes in English, Computation, Environmental Studies, and Photography. With these classes the students learn how to take better care of their environment, communicate with tourists, and showcase where they live.. In the Guaruma Monthly Review we show some of the best photographs by our students over the past month. ENJOY! Benjamin Katz—Director of Photography

Momentous Moments Moments come in all sorts of forms. With photography we have a distinct advantage to freeze everything in the exact moment that it occured. From the hatching of a chick to chopping fireword to playing futbol we have sought to capture life in its most unique instances.

Forms and Designs In nature, as in life, we have rhythms and movements that present themselves visually by way of designs and harmony of lines. Here we have the photography from our students showing this beauty in nature.

Flowering Beauty The students of Guaruma, like us all, are fascinated with the flower. A day in our photography class would not be complete without 20 images of flowers. Flowers convey a simplicity of beauty, a complexity of structure, a fragility of elegance, and a beauty for us all.

Things That Go in Your Mouth When asked what was important in their lives many of the students responded very literally: food. And it’s true! Eating is extremely important and here we have different photographs of the impact of food: the joy of mangos, the trash that people leave behind without thinking, a refreshing “topo” and what happens when you cannot eat.

Working and Studying in the Cuenca Life here isn’t all about mangos (although it is a great part of life), adults and kids alike work and study for their present and their future. Here you get to see our photography class in action, kids cleaning up the cuenca, and even community members building a house for someone in need.
