FINANCIAL FOCU$ Stay Calm on the Investment “Roller Coaster” Unless you live near an amusement park that does a lot of advertising, you probably didn’t know that Aug. 16 is National Roller Coaster Day. Actual roller coasters provide people with thrills. But as an investor, how can you stay calm on the “roller coaster” of the financial markets? Here are some suggestions: Know what’s in front of you. If you’ve ever ridden a roller coaster in the dark, you may find it scarier than if you boarded it in daylight – after all, it can be unsettling not to know where you’re going. The same can be said about investing: If you have no idea what’s in front of you, you might find the journey unnerving – and if that happens, you could make panicky decisions, which are usually bad ones. So prepare for the inevitable market volatility – it’s a normal part of the investment landscape. Buckle up. When you’re on a roller coaster, you need to buckle your seat belt or use a restraint. You want to have the excitement of the ride, but you certainly don’t want to take unnecessary risks. And you can enjoy some of the excitement of investing without incurring more risk than you are comfortable with, too. One way to lower your risk level is to diversify across a range of investments – stocks, bonds, government securities, and so on. That way, if a market downturn primarily affects just one type of investment, you’ll have some protection. However, although diversification can reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t protect against all losses or guarantee a profit.
with Jerry Pittz
Choose a strategy for the journey. Different people have different ways of handling a roller coaster ride. Some like to throw their hands up, enjoying the feeling of abandon, while others hold on tightly to the bar in front of them. When you invest, you also need a strategy that works for you, and the best one may be the simplest: Buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. How long is “long term”? It could be 10, 20, 30 years or more. Famed investor Warren Buffet says his favorite holding period is “forever.” If you’ve chosen a mix of quality investments appropriate for your risk tolerance, you may be able to hold them until either your goals change or the investments themselves undergo some transformation. Stay for the whole “ride.” When you hop on a roller coaster, you’ve got no choice – you’re staying until the ride is over. As an investor, though, you can exit the investment world whenever you like. But if you take a “time out” from investing every time the market drops, you risk still being out of the market when it rallies – and the early stages of a rally are often when the biggest gains occur. Furthermore, if you keep investing during a “down” market, you’ll be buying shares when their price has dropped, which means your dollars can go further – and you’ll be following one of the basic rules of investing: “Buy low.” You can’t take out all the twists and turns of the investment road, but by following the above suggestions, you can help make the ride less stressful – and possibly more rewarding.

Delaware Avenue By Susan E. Leath
How are you feeling about Delaware Avenue this summer? With all the improvements planned, the construction and traffic will be worth it in the end. In the meantime, how about some history while you wait? Cover Photo: Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Eames pose in their buggy circa 1910. This photo could very well have been taken on Delaware Avenue in Elsmere.
While some newspaper articles refer to Delaware Avenue as an old Indian trail, we know for sure that the Albany and Delaware Turnpike Company was chartered on March 2, 1805 by the New York State Legislature. The company was chartered for the purpose of making a turnpike road beginning in the city of Albany, and by the “most direct and practicable route” to Rensselaerville. From there, they were authorized to continue westward to the Schoharie creek near the house of Freegift Patchin* in the town of Blenheim, then to the Susquehanna River near Brink’s Mills in the town of Otego. On the way to Brink’s Mill, the turnpike would transverse Delaware County. Delaware County and its branch of the Delaware River derives their name from English nobleman Thomas West, 3rd, Baron DeLaWarr. The charter legislation goes on to appoint
Taken circa 1927, this photo shows the construction of a new bridge over the Normanskill. The curves of today’s Old Delaware Avenue, seen on the right, follow the original path of the Albany and Delaware Turnpike. The prominent building on the upper left is the Normansville one room school. p. 14

commissioners to sell subscriptions to the Albany and Delaware Turnpike Company. The subscriptions were the investor’s promise to buy stock at $25 a share. Sales of 6000 shares were authorized. Sanders Lansing, Abraham Hun, Jacob Veeder, Apollos Moore, Afa Starkweather, Hugh Orr and Stephen Judd were the first commissioners. In exchange for the enhanced road surface (“not less than four rods wide” with a “secure and compacted foundation…surfaced in gravel”), and hence improved travel for people and goods, the company was authorized to collect tolls. Once at least ten miles were completed, a gate located not less than five miles from the road’s Albany beginning at Lark Street and Wolf Street could be placed. Among many specific

The Albany and Delaware Turnpike never did get as far as Freegift Patchin’s house. Modern maps show the name Delaware Turnpike ending at Rensselaerville, which seems to be the accurate end of the line. The turnpike company struggled, and in 1865 formal legislation was passed abandoning the Albany portion to the city. Soon thereafter, the rest was abandoned as well. In Bethlehem, the road now carries the name Delaware Avenue although in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Delmar, the name Delaware Turnpike and Delaware Avenue were used interchangeably. Construction on Delaware Avenue, circa 1958, near Herrick At the New Scotland town line, the name is Avenue. Vehicles are stopped at the intersection with Elsmere firmly Delaware Turnpike, following today’s Avenue, on the left, and Grosbeck Place on the right. Route 443 out past Clarksville until it switches rates of toll listed was twelve and half cents for over to Route 85 on the way to Rensselaerville. a “stage wagon or four wheel carriage drawn by two horses, mules or oxen.” That’s about *Freegift Patchin (1758-1831) was something of a celebrity $2.50 today. Among the several exceptions in those early days of New York State. His intriguing memoir readily available on the internet. Search for “The deeply listed were those going to or from public isinteresting story of General Patchin of Schoharie County worship, a town meeting or election, and to stolen when a lad by Brant and his Indians.” and from a local gristmill or blacksmith. The first tollgate along the route appears to have been placed in the Bethlehem hamlet of Normansville, then known as Upper Hollow. In their 1886 history of Albany County, Howell and Tenney note that the old tollgate house was still standing and was “built when the road was first constructed, and from which Peter Esmay gathered toll for half a century. His familiar face and happy, smiling greeting This view of Delaware Avenue is from a copy of a postcard. Records say it is probably Delaware Avenue. The houses on the are remembered by many.” left with the vertical lines in the peak looks similar to the one near the Delmar Post Office.

Ask the
Canterbury Vet Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day We have all had pets that we have loved as family members. Like all family members, there comes a time when our beloved animals pass from this world. This often this leaves us with a profound feeling of loss and pain. August 28th is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day which celebrates our pets that have passed before us. Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day was established as a memorial for pets that have passed across the Rainbow Bridge. Rainbow Bridge carries on an ancient tradition of memorializing our beloved pets with the same care and consideration as our departed human family members. Pharaohs would entomb and mummify their cats, and animals of all sorts have been found in ritualized burials. The Ancient Egyptians buried their pets with all the things they would need in their afterlife, just like the humans that were mummified and buried. Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day celebrates these ancient traditions.
Create a digital memorial at the Rainbow Bridge website so the world will always remember them. Send cards to people who were involved in your pet’s care, such as groomers, veterinarians, or pet sitters Decorate a headstone or memorial stone for your pet Have your pet’s name engraved on a keepsake box and keep pictures and other memories of your pet inside Our pets are important parts of our lives and deserve to be remembered. Whether you post it digitally online, or create a memorial in your backyard, Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is a reminder to spend some time honoring your passed pets. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
Hello Constant Readers… How is your summer reading going? Did I just hear you guffaw, “What summer?” This summer has exhibited some of the most unusual weather of any that I can remember. Now, that isn’t a complaint, just an observation. But I do reflect upon what my grandchildren’s memories of summer weather will be like after the summer of 2017. As my granddaughter Trinity reflected, it has rained on most of our pre-arranged “swim days” this summer. She stays over Wednesday nights and works in the bookshop with me until 3:30pm on Thursdays. We close up, and head for the Town of Bethlehem Town Park. She shares my love of the pool, Seamus, reading and ice cream, among other things. “Schooled” by Gordon Korman is the book she chose for one of her required summer readings. When we are together, I read aloud to her, reminiscent of my reading experiences as a 5th grade teacher. I am loving this story of home schooled Capricorn Anderson who must enter the “real world and 8th grade at Claverage Middle School, when his grandmother, Rain, an aging hippie, falls from a plum tree on their agricultural commune. Falling from that plum tree places Rain in physical therapy miles away and Cap into his first encounter in a real school. With the L always being removed from the school name…he enters C AVERAGE Middle School and must learn how to survive in this techno-bullying society where he must learn not only to survive but thrive in a world as foreign to him as his is to his classmates. This book has led to incredible discussions with my granddaughter. Recent topics that found her in utter disbelief: that I made it thru my childhood with black and white TV (no remote), one dial phone with a 6 foot curly cord in the house, no computers, and no bottled water! She was amazed that I only owned two pair of sneakers, one pair of “dress shoes” and one pair of flip-flops at a time. She was thrilled to find out that I had a real record player with “vinyl”, a transistor radio with an ear piece and that I spent my babysitting money on books at the Woolworth’s and ice cream at the local Dairy Queen. We share a love of animals and she is campaigning for a live hedgehog for Christmas! Her last visit to see my son (her Daddy) in New Hampshire, she read books to her sister Raven, aged 4 ½ and visited the York Maine Zoo and York Beach. She rode a camel, Raven a pony. They rode amusement rides and taught her sister how to raise her hands in the air on the ferris wheel. She got to break the news to her little sister that she would be going to Kindergarten in September! Raven had to take an entrance test, which gave her terrible anxiety. When I knew that she had gotten in, I gathered some more phonics and easy to read books and a DVD on preparing for Kindergarten (with music, song, and dance) and mailed them off. They arrived while Trinity was there and they used that opportunity to play school together. Reading is more than just enjoying an author’s work and perspective, it can connect loved ones, it can root you to the location and time where you experienced the read! I can still remember reading “Jaws” on a hot, humid night in my bedroom in Loudonville and bringing
p. 36
it to work to read on my break. I always bring another Stephen King with me to my Sebec Lake vacation in Maine. I can recall the grass and picnic blanket at Thatcher Park reading Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse Five” while in college. I think of the Glenside Town Pool in Pennsylvania when I pass by “The Left Behind series” in the shop. I shared reading that epic series with my youngest sister Kelly and my Darlin’ Dad up here in NY. We would discuss it on Sunday’s, long distance, when the rates were cheaper! Those apocalyptic Christian end time thrillers connected the three of us over the miles. My Dad made a joke about that he could die before the series of 12 books were complete! They initially came out every six months, then, after they really had you hooked, they came out once a year! I hate when that happens! By the way, I have that series in the shop if interested! I am currently preparing my book bag for my annual trip to the lake in Maine. One Stephen King already set aside along with book 3 in the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a few mysteries, a few spiritual reflection books and, as always, my copy of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I always pack yarn and crochet hooks for a Christmas project and music cds since we don’t have wireless to play Pandora. My recent love of Pandora music, which I play in the shop, is Instrumental Folk Music and Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra. I will be offline while there…which will be refreshing! Tattered Pages will be closed during my vacation in the lakes region of Northern Maine. I will be communing with the loons, eagles, chipmunks, hummingbirds, deer, squirrels and Moose if lucky! The Eldridge family has their roots high up in Piscataquis County, in the logging lakes region, since the early 1800s. We still have family in nearby Dexter, Maine who have run dairy farms, construction companies and a cousin who ventured into her own shop of woolen primitives and décor in town. I can’t wait to see her shop! So, the shop will be closed from August 4th through August 19th. I am sorry for any inconvenience! As usual, please do not leave any books outside the shop! I will not be taking any books in for trade credits after August 2nd and will start taking books for credit consideration again on August 20th. For trade credits I will look at 6 clean/odor free adult books and 12 children’s books at a time. I will be having a very special sale on hardcover books in September, so stay posted. If you are a patron of my unique bookshop, I would hope that I see you those last two weeks of August so that I can make my rent for September. Small Business owners walk a precarious line when juggling family time and business life! You have always been so supportive in the past, I would appreciate that consideration for when I return! If you have had a great experience at Tattered Pages, please share that with someone! Sincere word of mouth is the best advertising for small business, and I am forever grateful! THE Y’S FATHER OF SWIMMING LESSONS
Michael Phelps. Mark Spitz. Johnny Weissmuller. Ryan Lochte. Jenny Thompson. Amy Van Dyken. George Corsan. Those names represent 56 Olympic gold medals in swimming. George Corsan’s contribution to that total is 0. Yet, he may have had a bigger impact on swimming than all of the others combined.
If you learned to swim at the YMCA, you can thank George Corsan. If you’ve taken your son or daughter to the Y for a group swimming lesson, you can thank George Corsan. Many people who will go swimming this summer in oceans, lakes and pools, can thank George Corsan too. So, who is George Corsan? George H. Corsan, Sr. was a Canadian who did more than any single person to popularize swimming in North America. In the early 1900’s he developed YMCA swimming programs, designed the pools and originated the first group swimming lessons. In response to a YMCA campaign “to teach every man and boy in North America” to swim, George Corsan arrived at the Detroit YMCA in 1909 to teach swimming using radical new methods: group swimming lessons and lessons on land as a confidence builder. In Newark, N.J., alone, he taught 800 boys to swim in just four weeks. Swimming classes expanded throughout the century to include families and people with disabilities. In addition to helping youth feel safe around water, swim activities develop kids’ problem-solving abilities and bolster their self-esteem.
More George Corsan Uberfacts: He directed swimming instruction at World War I training camps in California; he developed the Boy Scout masters course for aquatic instruction; he invented “water wings” for beginning swimmers; he received the Canadian Royal Life Saving Society Award of Merit in 1899; his motto was "Paddle your own canoe, but first learn to swim;" He wrote three books on swimming, diving and lifesaving; His book entitled: At Home in the Water: Swimming, Diving, Life Saving, Water Sports, Natatoriums, published in 1914, is still available. Corsan was also an expert diving instructor. He wrote an article for a YMCA publication in 1918 on the need for diving instruction and the benefits of diving. In Corsan’s article, which used some colorful phrases for the time, he wrote that knowing proper diving technique is essential if you must dive 90 feet off a sinking ship that is in flames. He also wrote that learning to dive is great for “fraidy cats” because “it is an anti-dote to faintheartedness.” He also relished the challenge of teaching diving to people he described as “structurally awkward, stiff-jointed and stupid at coordination.” So, next time you come to the Y for a swimming lesson, or the next time you jump in a lake, or off a burning, sinking ship, take a moment to thank the YMCA and George Corsan, the father of swimming and diving instruction.
Each year, the Bethlehem Y gives swimming lessons to hundreds of kids and adults, in addition to the youths on the Bay Rays swim team. Prior to coming to America and the YMCA, Corsan was the head swimming instructor for the International

Bethlehem Historical Association
World War I Table Top War Games August 24
You are invited to participate in something completely different. Sunday, August 24, the Bethlehem Historical Association will host a World War I tabletop battle to coincide with their summer exhibition about Bethlehem's participation in that war a century ago. Players of any age (under 12 with an adult) should show up at the Cedar Hill School on Route 144, from 2 to 4pm Sunday afternoon, to command a battleship of the US Navy, or one from the Imperial German High Seas Fleet. The ships are tiny, but the rules are easily learned, and give a very good idea of what battle in the mists and smoke of the North Sea was like.
102 CELEBRATING
YEARS
OF SERVING OUR
COMMUNITY
There will be tabletop war-game, again, easily to learn and for all ages. This time players will take to the skies over the Adriatic Sea as pursuit planes and bombers of Italy's Regia Aeronautica. They’ll battle it out with the fliers of the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Luftfahrtruppen. The tiny 1/144 scale planes are a colorful reminder of just how drab modern air combat has become. And how impersonal. Perhaps you will have time to learn a few interesting facts about Italy's famous ace Francesco Barraca, or Austria's Godwin Brumowski. For further information or to reserve a spot at the table, please call Robert Mulligan at 439-3802.
