September Lecture Business Women in Mid-19th Century Albany Presented by Susan Ingalls Lewis, PhD.
DATE & TIME: Thursday, September 19, 2 PM
PLACE: Delmar Reformed Church 386 Delaware Avenue, Delmar
As part of their Fall Speaker Series, the Bethlehem Historical Association is pleased to present a talk by Dr. Susan Ingalls Lewis entitled “Business Women in MidNineteenth Century Albany” on Thursday, September 19 at 2 PM at the Delmar Reformed Church. Drawing from her book Unexceptional Women: Female Proprietors in Mid-Nineteenth Century Albany, Dr. Lewis will challenge our assumptions about the role of woman as only wife and mother. Her meticulous research in city directories, census records, and credit reports casts light on women running a wide variety of businesses including groceries, saloons and liquor stores, piano stores, hotels and even a plumbing company. Dr. Lewis will reveal evidence of such supposedly modern phenomena as self-employment, dual-income marriages, working motherhood, home-based business and the juggling of domestic and professional priorities. Susan Ingalls Lewis is a Professor Emerita at the State University of New York College at New Paltz, as well as an affiliate faculty member in the Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. Dr. Lewis received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1970, and her Ph.D. from Binghamton University in 2002. She continues to teach courses on American women’s history and New York State history and is currently co-editing Suffrage and its Limits: The New York Story (to be published by SUNY Press). Professor Lewis’s monograph, Unexceptional Women: Female Proprietors in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Albany, New York, 1830-1885 (Ohio State University Press, 2009) was awarded the Hagley Prize in Business History for the best book published the field.
Free and open to the public, the talk will be followed by refreshments and conversation.

The Elsmere Fire District has advised that they will dedicate their new “South Station” on
Sunday, September 15th,
between the hours of 1pm and 3pm.
The new fire station, located at 578 Feura Bush Road in Glenmont will be open to the public between 1pm and 3pm. Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, Richard Webster, advised that the fire district will not only showcase its brand new fire station, but a new fire truck designed especially for response from this new location. Webster also advised that the construction of this fire station has been in planning since the early 1980’s and that the anticipated growth has now gotten to the stage that construction was necessary to insure the safety and wellbeing of the residents in this Glenmont area. The new “South Station” has been responding to calls since the beginning of August. Additional information can be obtained t at

FINANCIAL FOCU$
What Can a Financial Advisor Do for You? What does investing mean to you? If the word makes you think of transactions – buying or selling stocks and bonds – you’re looking at just part of the picture. To work toward all your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need a comprehensive financial strategy. And for that, you might need to work with a personal financial advisor. But what, specifically, can this type of professional do for you? Here are some of the key services a financial advisor can provide:
your financial strategy. Any number of events – a new child, a new job, a new retirement destination – can cause you to adjust your investment moves, as will some of the factors influencing the financial markets – economic downturns, changing interest rates, new tax laws, and more. A financial advisor can help you change course as needed – and sometimes encourage you not to change course, when, in his or her professional opinion, you might be tempted to overreact to some event or other.
•
Help you invest for your retirement – An experienced financial advisor can look at all the relevant factors – your current and projected income, age at which you’d like to retire, desired retirement lifestyle – to help you determine how much you need to invest, and in which investment vehicles, to help you reach your retirement goals. To cite just one example, a financial advisor can review your employersponsored retirement plan and help you determine how to use it to your greatest advantage.
While a financial advisor can help you in many ways, you’ll need, above all else, to feel comfortable with whomever you choose. Ultimately, you’ll want to pick someone who understands what’s important to you, and who will follow an established process to create personalized strategies and recommend specific actions needed to help achieve your goals. And you’ll want someone who will be with you in the long run – someone who will revisit your objectives and risk tolerance and who can adjust your strategies in response to changes in your life.
•
Help you save for college – Higher education is expensive, and costs are rising every year. If you’d like to help your children – or grandchildren – go to college someday, you need to save and invest early and often. A financial advisor can suggest appropriate college savings vehicles and strategies.
A financial advisor can make a big difference in your life. So, work diligently to find the right one – and take full advantage of the help you’ll receive as you move toward your important goals.
•
Help make sure you’re well-protected – If something were to happen to you, could your family maintain its standard of living? Or if you someday needed some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home, would you be able to maintain your financial independence, or would you be forced to rely on your adult children for help? A financial advisor can recommend and possibly provide suitable protection products and services for your needs.
•
Help you adjust your financial strategy – Not much will stay constant in your life – and that includes

Then
& Now
Town Historians By Susan E. Leath
Quite often your town historian is asked “What exactly do you do?” and “Why do we have a historian anyway?” This month I will explore those questions and next month I will get back to objects. I am thinking about apples and orchards. 100 years ago this past April, Gov. Al Smith signed New York’s Public Historian Law. Section 57.07 of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Law states in part “A local historian shall be appointed for each city, town or village, and a county historian may be appointed for each county.” It goes on with a list of duties that focuses on managing and preserving records of historic value and concludes with the statement that the historian shall “carry out and actively encourage research in such records in order to add to the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the community’s history.” And there you have it. What Bethlehem’s town historians have been striving for since the first one was appointed in 1921. To add to the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the community’s history.
Standing at the Bethlehem Historical Association’s Cedar Hill Schoolhouse Museum about 1975 are, from left to right, William D. Pompa (president of BHA from 1975-76), Ruth Miner (attorney and active Bethlehem citizen), Bertram Kohinke (supervisor from 1960 to 1974), Grace Waldbillig (BHA member) and Thomas E. Mulligan (town historian 1974-76 and 1979-83.)
APHNYS, the Association of Public Historians of New York State, sums up the duties of a municipal historian in four straightforward bullet points. 1. Research and writing 2. Teaching and public presentations 3. Historic Preservation 4. Organization, advocacy and tourism promotion So, who was Bethlehem’s first historian? That would be Mrs. Harriet C. D. Wiltsie of South Bethlehem. She was appointed by the Town Board on March 26, 1921. Wiltsie and her family show up regularly in local newspapers for their involvement in community life in South Bethlehem, and there is one intriguing item from when a carriage she was riding in was hit by a street car on Pearl Street, but nothing regarding her activity as historian. Reading through the Town Board minute books, there is no further action on the historian appointment until August of 12, 1926 when the board carried a motion to ask Ruth M. Miner to be the “social historian”. Her letter declining the position was read at the August 27, 1926 meeting. October 4, 1926 brought the appointment of Mrs. Lucius Washburn as “social historian.” Washburn, the former Anna Holler, turns up often in the local paper for her doings in Delmar, especially with Delmar Reformed Church, but again, nothing regarding her appointment as historian.
COVER: Ruth Dickinson was Bethlehem’s
town historian from 1945 to 1965. p. 12
The mostly honorary appointments of Harriet Wiltsie and Anna Washburn were followed by a gap of 19 years. Then a new, and very active, historian came on the scene. Ruth Dickinson (often referred to in the records as Mrs. Paul Dickinson) was appointed March 14, 1945 and annually thereafter until she resigned in December of 1965. Researching Dickinson in the newspapers turns up many articles and mentions of her work on Bethlehem’s War
Council during World War II, her work on the Civil Defense Council during the Korean War, and especially, her work as town historian. Dickinson’s annual reports highlight her work including the many talks she gave to local groups of adults and children designed to educate about, in her own words, “the back ground and history” of the town. She answered many questions from citizens and students, was a founding member of the Bethlehem Historical Association, chaired Bethlehem’s participation in the Hudson Champlain Celebration/Year of History in 1959 and was particularly concerned with preserving the records of Bethlehem’s service men and women. Then there was the “drab” and “arduous” work of newspaper clipping. Dickinson, and historian’s that followed, spent hours clipping articles out of daily and weekly papers in order to document “all phases of Bethlehem’s daily growth” and then organized them into 50 or more categories. Thankfully, in our digital age, historians no longer do this work. There are, however, two boxes of carefully filed, and now brittle and crumbling, newspaper clippings in the town’s archive. Town historian Susan Leath’s new book, Bethlehem People and Places, explores Bethlehem, New York’s unique history through 36 illustrated articles.
The editorial staff for Bethlehem Revisited: A Bicentennial Story published in 1993. From left to right, Town Historian Joe Allgaier, Chuck McKinney, Floyd Brewer, Hugh Hewitt, and Peter Christoph.
Each and every historian on the list below brought their own interests and strengths to the work of town historian adding to the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Bethlehem’s history. Your current historian seeks to do the same. 1921 Mrs Harriet C. D. Wiltsie 1926 Anna Holler Washburn (Mrs. Lucius H. Washburn) 1945-1965: Ruth A. Dickinson (Mrs. Paul Dickinson) 1966-1974: Allison Bennett (Mrs. William D. Bennett) 1974-1976: Thomas E. Mulligan
Places ground our history. People make history lively. Come along on the journey as Leath follows her curiosity in her hometown of Bethlehem. Read about Victorian and vernacular farmhouses, and about the families that made these types of building home. Find out the story of World War I veteran John Adams Dyer, Hudson River light keeper Warren Welch and architect Grace Slingerland. Wonder about how Delmar got its name, and just where is the hamlet of Frazertown.
1978-1977: Lois Dillon (Mrs. Edward Dillon) 1979-1983: Thomas E. Mulligan 1984-1987: James E. Morgan 1988-1990: Valerie Restifo Thompson (Valerie J. Restifo, Valerie Thompson) 1991-2005: Joseph Allgaier 2005-2007: Raymond C. Houghton, PhD 2007 to present: Susan E. Leath
Author Susan E. Leath was appointed Bethlehem Town Historian in 2007. She is continually inspired by the people who generously share their family history. Leath believes local history opens the way to the wider sweep of our national story. She invites you to be curious about the everyday people and places around you. Rabies prevention starts with animal owners
Ask the
Canterbury Vet
World Rabies Day September 28th is World Rabies Day. Rabies is a major concern worldwide, killing more than 55,000 people every year. Rabies is present on every continent except Antarctica. The most recent statistics indicated there were more than 6,000 reported cases of animal rabies in the U.S. alone. Rabies causes tens f thousands of deaths yearly, mostly in Asia and Africa. The World Health Organization, the World Organization for Animal Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control have set a global target of zero human rabies deaths by 2030. New York State Public Health Code 2141 states that there is compulsory vaccination for every dog, cat and domesticated ferret four months of age and older. A second vaccination shall be administered within one year of the first. Subsequent vaccine administration and duration of immunity must be in compliance with the USDA licenses of vaccines used. The Wadsworth Center Rabies Laboratory in Slingerlands diagnosed almost 112 cases of rabies alone in New York in the month of June, 2017. Current month and year to date numbers of rabies suspects and diagnosed cases are available at their website: www.wadsworth.org
General Information About Rabies
• Rabies is caused by a virus that animals and people can get through exposure to the saliva or nervous tissue of a rabid animal. • It is nearly always fatal without proper post-exposure prophylaxis [treatment] (PEP). • Rabies is zoonotic, which means it can spread from animals to people. • Rabies is 100% preventable. In most cases, preventing rabies is as simple as ensuring adequate animal vaccination and control, avoiding contact with wild animals, and educating those at risk.
• All mammals that have frequent contact with humans should be vaccinated, particularly dogs, cats and ferrets. Consider vaccinating livestock and horses. • Vaccinations need to be kept up to date. • Pet owners can reduce the possibility of pets being exposed to rabies by not letting them roam free. Spaying or neutering your animal may reduce a tendency to roam or fight and thus reduce the chance that they will be exposed to rabies.
Reduce the risk of exposure to rabies from wildlife
• Don’t feed or water your pets outside. Even empty bowls will attract wild and stray animals. • Keep your garbage securely covered. Open garbage will attract wild or stray animals. • Don’t keep wild animals as pets. • Teach children not to approach or handle unfamiliar animals – even if they appear friendly.
What to do if someone is bitten
• Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least fifteen minutes. • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. In rabies endemic areas the victim needs PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) a course of vaccinations and immunoglobulin. In non-rabies endemic areas, your physician will assess the need for PEP. • Applying an antiseptic may stop secondary infections (but this will not stop rabies from developing).
What to do if your pet is bitten by an unvaccinated animal • Where possible, consult your veterinarian immediately. Your animal may need booster vaccinations. • Watch your pet for signs of illness or unusual behavior for at least 45 days Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

Rabies Statistics
• Best estimates are that 55,000 people die every year of rabies. That’s one person every 10 minutes. • At least half of the people who die from rabies are children under the age of 15. • In 95% of human rabies cases, the cause was a bite or scratch from an infected dog. • Rabies overwhelmingly afflicts the world’s poorest communities. p. 22

Bethlehem uses more than 400 miles of pipes to deliver 1.6 billion gallons of clean water to homes and businesses every year, and to carry away 1.2 billion gallons of sewage for treatment. That’s the equivalent of a pipe running from Delmar to well past Toronto. For decades, an “out of sight, out of mind” approach to pipe management seemed to work because the pipes were still on the newer side. But about 4 years ago, the Town shifted to a more proactive approach.
We’re also actively replacing old pipes. During the Delaware Ave enhancement project, we replaced pipes that had been put in just after World War II. We’re also replacing pipes with a bad history of breaks or water quality complaints. We’ve replaced the pipes under Rose Ct, Norge Rd, Sylvan Ave, Normanskill Blvd, and others, and have more in the queue. Over the next three years, we’ll be using an advanced leak detection system to identify small leaks that could turn into large breaks if left alone. The three-year program will cover our entire water distribution system and will help us map out our pipe replacement program for years to come. Because we can’t see them, it’s easy to forget all the pipes that are vital to the delivery of clean water and the safe removal of sewage. But the Town is thinking about them, and working on them, every day. So let’s be patient when we have to stop for a flagger because the road’s been torn up – whether to repair a break or proactively replace old pipes – because the work is benefitting us in so many ways.

Since 2017, Bethlehem has budgeted between $550,000 and $700,000 annually for proactive water and sewer line improvements. One focus has been better connections. Last summer, for example, we installed over a mile of new water line along River Road in Glenmont to improve connections and allow us to continue delivering water if there’s a break.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
Dear Constant Reader, Are you hearing, where did the Summer go? Well, how did your summer reading go? Was it different than other times of the year? Did you allow yourself more time for reading because you watched television less? Did you have the opportunity to sit outside to read more? Did you pack a separate bag for your books when you went on vacation? Did you get into a series, experience a new author or genre? Did you delve into a mystery poolside, a romance lakeside, or crafting books while you learned a new technique? Did you spend those horribly humid days inside in air conditioning reading a spicy romance, fast spaced suspence, or a hilarious memoir of days gone by? Were you secure inside during those unbelievable thunderstorms distracting yourself with a mystery or fantasy novel? Did a child in your life wait until the last minute to read their required summer reading? Were you scrambling to find that copy of “Brave New World”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, "The Scarlet Letter" or “The Outsiders”? Or, did your child amaze you by the amount of reading that they did on their own just for pleasure? Did they have a writing journal or drawing diary influenced by what they read? When my children were on swimteam (Go Glenside Dolphins! Yes, I lived in the town of Glenside, PA and now Glenmont, NY) they had a lot of down time between heats. Often they played cards, or listened to music, but many would “dive” back into their books. I loved hearing a group discuss their readings with each other! Lifeguards would share their books around and I have even heard the guards behind the welcome desk at Elm Ave. Pool talking about what they were currently reading! I love that there is a rack of books for patrons to borrow while at the pool! I had a nice chat with an older woman who was reading a Janet Evanovich "Stephanie Plum" book. She was laughing out loud. I had just come up from the lap lane and saw her reading "Hot Six" and said to her..."Great book...hers are always quite funny!" She said that she had never read her before and had forgotten her book. Kudos to Bethlehem Library for providing these books for this exact situation! I shared that I had several more over at the bookshop in both paperback and hardcover!
I love how books bring back memories of location, time in our life and even whether read inside or outside. I can recall sitting in the bookshop on our old (no longer in the shop) puffy, blue couch one winter, reading George R.R. Martin's non-Game of Thrones Sci-Fi, "Dying of the Light" his first attempt into the world of far away lands. I read Stephen King's 11/22/63 with Seamus curled by my side. In the past, most of my favorite books were read on the deck of my sister-in-law's camp just 12 steps from the sacred waters of Lake Sebec in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. It was with my granddaughter Trinity that I shared the marvelous book by Neil Gaiman, "The Ocean at the End of the Lane"! She was 10 at the time and told me that the book jacket was intriguing! The fact that water played such an important part in the book was only intensified that we could "put a bookmark in it" and head down to drift and discuss what had just happened in the book! A Facebook/bookshop friend of mine posted a picture today with a very sad commentary. I took immediate issue with it! There were 3 famous books by Shel Silverstein displayed: The Light in the Attic Patricia Eldridge is the owner~operator of Tattered Pages (est. 2006) 365 Feura Bush Rd. in the Glenmont Center Square.
