Q: The weather has really gotten cold! How can I keep my dogs and cats safe this winter? Brrrr…it’s cold outside! The following guidelines will help you protect your pets when the mercury drops. 1. Keep pets away from antifreeze solution, and promptly clean up any antifreeze spills. Antifreeze is attractive to pets but is deadly, even in very small amounts. 2. Do not leave your pets outdoors unattended when the temperature gets below freezing. Pets that get too chilled can develop hypothermia or even frostbite. Ear tips are especially susceptible to frostbite. 3. Short-coated dogs (Greyhounds, Dobermans, Boxers and Boston Terriers) should not go outside without a coat or sweater in very cold weather, except to relieve themselves. Small dogs with short coats (Chihuahuas, miniature Pinschers, and miniature Dachshunds) are especially vulnerable to cold and may not be able to tolerate any outdoor exercise in extremely cold weather. 4. Many dogs also need boots in cold weather, regardless of coat length. If your dog frequently lifts up his paws, whines or stops during its walks, it is demonstrating that its feet are uncomfortably cold. Try to get your dog used to wearing boots before the cold weather sets in. 5. Dogs with long fur on the bottom of their paws often develop ice balls between the pads and toes of the feet. To prevent ice balls from forming, trim the hair around your dog’s feet. Apply a small amount of Vaseline, cooking oil, or PAM spray to your dog’s feet before taking him for a walk in snow or use Musher’s brand paw wax.
The oil helps prevent ice balls from sticking. Make sure you use edible oil; most dogs will lick their paws after you apply the oil. 6. If your pet walks on salted sidewalks or streets, be sure to wash his paws after your walk. Salt is very irritating to footpads. Gently rub the bottom of the feet to remove the salt as soon as your dog is off the road. Use pet friendly ice melt on your own walks and driveway. 7. Many animals are less active during the winter and don’t need as many calories as in the warmer months. Reduce the volume of your pet’s diet during the winter, to avoid excessive weight gain. You may wish to consult with your veterinarian about the right winter food portions for your pet.
“The Capital Region’s Original Mobile Pet Groomer”
Now Taking New Customers! Call Laura today 518-207-6418 to set up your appointment dsmobilegrooming.com Most dogs take about an hour to groom, and they never have to go farther then your driveway!
8. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
It’s much safer to keep your cat indoors during the 9. Most cats prefer to spend their winter days winter. indoors; be cautious if your cat likes being outside. Please send all your veterinary questions to: Don’t let it out in bitterly cold weather and be sure it AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to has a warm place to go if it does spend a lot of time Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital outdoors. Cats that are left outdoors may crawl into 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 12054 a warm car engine to get warm, which can be fatal.

PoweredHarmony by Community is learning something new Pre-School Program at the Bethlehem YMCA A, B, C – easy as 1, 2, 3! The alphabet and counting are among the first things a child learns. Studies show that children who attend pre-school enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than children who do not. The Bethlehem YMCA offers an outstanding pre-school program for three and four-year-old children that provides a great mix of learning, fun and activities. Children learn basic reading, math, language and reasoning skills. They also learn how to socialize, to get along with other kids, share, and contribute to a group in an active, fun setting. Did I mention swimming, ice skating, gym games, arts and crafts and outdoor activities? Those are also part of the fun at the Bethlehem YMCA preschool. Parents see first-hand how their kids benefit from attending the Y’s pre-school program. Mary and Dale Caron of Delmar, said: “Our daughter feels right at home at the YMCA pre-school. This is her second year and she just loves it. The teachers are caring, fun and supportive.
every day which she brings into the rest of her day.” “Both of our children have had a wonderful experience attending preschool at the YMCA. They have learned great social skills, as well as math and language skills to help prepare them for kindergarten,” said Jason Reno of Selkirk. The Bethlehem YMCA pre-school goes from 9 a.m. to Noon. Three-year-olds attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays; four-year-olds attend on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Our pre-school program allows children to explore, play, and learn. It builds creative, confident, wellrounded individuals who are ready for kindergarten and beyond! It’s easy as A, B, C!
New Year, New Drive to help our community The Bethlehem YMCA’s Annual Campaign for 2014 is already underway! Our goal is to raise more than $100,000 to help low-income families in Bethlehem. Every dollar raised stays right in our community. The YMCA’s scholarship program, formerly called “Reach Out for Youth,” benefits thousands of families in Bethlehem that couldn’t otherwise afford to take part in the Y’s programs. No one is ever
Let the Y help you keep your New Year’s resolution to get in shape by signing up for the Healthier You Challenge. Participants will be split into teams, each with a personal trainer who will monitor and record how often team members work out and for how long. If a team member doesn’t show up at the Y, the trainer will make a friendly reminder call. Each participant in the Healthier You Challenge pays $25. The team that logs the most visits and hours working out at the Y wins half the money (the other half goes to pay for program expenses). The program begins in February and you can about it at the front desk. Biggest loser? No, there are no weighins on local or national television. Biggest winners? Yes -- everyone who participates and everyone who keeps their resolution to get in shape.

& Now The Mansion at Cedar Hill By Susan E. Leath
An aerial view of the mansion taken in the early 1960s
Always meant to have a party. That’s how Danielle Marvelli describes her lovely River Road home in the Cedar Hill section of Bethlehem. With its many prominent owners and guests that include a militia general, a wealthy publisher, a prominent politician and a noted defense attorney with shady clients, this property has hosted many a social gathering over the years. Fittingly, the party continues today with its use as a private home hosting weddings and other events.
Cooper died in 1878 and in the late 1880s James B. Lyon acquired the 200 acre parcel that stretched from the River Road east to the Hudson River and south to the Vlomankill. Lyon transformed Cooper’s more modest home into a comfortable summer retreat. Lyon was the owner of a successful publishing and printing company and other business interests in Albany. By his retirement in 1916, he and his wife Anita were living here year round.
Lyon was a generous man who Just before the entrance to Henry apparently liked to have his friends near Hudson Town Park, one notices the him. He gave parcels of land to two sweeping lawn that leads up to a friends, Dr. MacDonald and Martin H. striking, large home. Today, it presides Glynn so they too could enjoy the cool over rumbling trucks and flashing cars countryside of Cedar Hill away from the traveling on Route 144. In the early summer heat of Albany. In 1907 Glynn 1800s, this area was home to the quiet hired architect Marcus T. Reynolds to country retreat of General John Taylor fulfill his ideas of a Mediterranean style Cooper. Although much altered, this is the home that stands today. Glynn’s summer home was built close to Lyon’s retreat. MacDonald’s home is just to the north. One imagines much summer socializing between the three families. Glynn was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1913 and, following the impeachment Gov. William Sulzer, became Governor of New York from 1913-1914. The August 17, 1913 issue of the New York Times features a photo spread of the new governor with his wife Mary at their country home at Cedar Hill. While prominent in political circles, Glynn was also a noted journalist who became owner, publisher and editor of the Albany Times Union. The west façade today. The curtained space behind the columns was originally a breezeway between the billiard room and smoking room. Today it is a recessed porch that opens to the event space.

Two years after Glynn’s death in 1924, the house was acquired by Daniel H. Prior who had it converted to a year round residence for himself and his family. Prior has been called the greatest trial attorney of his time. Michael Friedman in his blog post for the Albany County Bar Association notes “Long before he represented Legs Diamond across the Hudson, his unsuccessful defense of Anna Antonio was one of the great works of legal advocacy of 20th Century in Albany.” Diamond was a famous Prohibition era gangster and rum runner. An unpublished history of the mansion notes that Diamond “lived at the Prior estate while out on bail in his criminal lawyer’s custody. Prior was able to get Diamond out of his shooting incident trouble, and Diamond paid him by giving him some Great Danes.” After Prior’s death in 1953 his widow and daughter moved into the gatehouse and closed up the big house. The Bethlehem Elks, organized in the fall of 1961, purchased the Prior estate in 1962. Prior himself belonged the Albany Elks Lodge. The Elks made considerable changes to the mansion including

adding a large multi-purpose room by enclosing the courtyard between the wings of the building, creating a bar and cocktail lounge out the dining room and removing upstairs partitions between bedrooms to create another meeting space. When Marvelli and her husband Brian Kelly drove by the mansion in 2004 and saw the for sale sign, they were intrigued by the possibilities of this unique property. A tour of the building revealed the 1970s era style and flair of the Elks paired with the elegant architectural details still visible from the Glynn and Prior eras. They immediately fell in love with place, purchased it and started restoration work. Today, Marvelli and Kelly have created a welcoming home to raise their family as well as an elegant venue for special events. Susan E. Leath serves as the Bethlehem’s Town Historian. Susan is also the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 images dating from the 1880’s to 1960.

Message from the Supervisor It’s a new year, with a swearing-in ceremony for elected town officials on Wednesday, January 8 in Bethlehem Town Hall at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to this ceremony which begins the first Town Board meeting of 2014. I’m very grateful to have been entrusted by the voters with another term as Supervisor. The past two years, while containing h ll h some challenges, have been extremely rewarding and I look forward to the coming term with great enthusiasm. Bethlehem’s future is very bright, and we now have the opportunity to find ways to make it even brighter. I hope many of you will be able to attend the State of the Town address on Thursday, January 23 at 8:00 a.m. in Town Hall, when I’ll be outlining my agenda for the coming year. Bethlehem’s Chamber of Commerce sponsors a continental breakfast for the event that will be available at 7:45 a.m. It’s a good time to socialize and make connections. Much of the focus this year will be on economic and residential development. If we do it right, we’ll be able to grow our commercial tax base and expand the housing options available in Bethlehem without sacrificing the quality community we all enjoy. We want to have a very healthy commercial sector and we want it to expand in appropriate areas. This year we’re implementing improvements in strategy and support for such growth. The pressure for residential construction is returning in full vigor, which is a good sign about the economy and the desirability of Bethlehem as a place to live. That said, we need to make sure that the development we get benefits the community rather than detracting from it. We’ll follow up on last year’s citizens group that reviewed our Comprehensive Plan as we respond to the many emerging proposals for development, making sure that standards are met, the public is heard, and Bethlehem’s unique character is preserved. I’ll also be proposing an open space program to ensure we’re in a position to preserve beautiful rural views and natural areas to ensure that future generations can enjoy these vital attributes of our community. We also need to prudently invest in sidewalks and streetscapes, and work creatively with Bethlehem’s business and civic community to firm up and improve our position as the most welcoming, walkable and attractive suburban community in the Capital Region. Near the top of the list of concerns I hear from residents are traffic and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. This year we’ll be working on traffic calming (Haswell-Enclave), traffic planning (Glenmont area), and on road safety and traffic in lots of places, such as along Delaware Avenue and at the Elsmere School crosswalk. Public engagement with town government is vital, and there will be several new citizens’ committees this year, including a public-private group to help spur Delaware Avenue improvements. During 2014 we will again hold a series of Community Town Halls in neighborhoods across town, which is very important to make sure the Town Board hears the views of people from all neighborhoods and gets a lot of input on what’s important to them. 24
Bethlehem is uniquely well prepared to meet the challenges facing local governments. We are in good financial condition, benefit from an engaged citizenry with a strong tradition of community involvement, and have a skilled and dedicated town staff and officers. I believe that it is both our privilege and responsibility to not only meet our challenges, but to exceed our own high expectations, and in so doing to serve as an exemplary model community. Happy New Year!

The following is a message from Superintendent Dr. Thomas J. Douglas and Transportation Director Al Karam regarding winter bus-stop safety. If you have any further questions regarding transportation safety, please contact Mr. Karam at 439-3830 or karaatr@bcsd.neric.org.
WINTER BUS SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS AND DRIVERS:
The Dos and Don'ts of Winter Bus Safety
DOs • Do encourage your children to follow winter school bus safety rules. • Do keep your vehicle in good driving condition - a child's life may depend on it. • Do clear snow from the bus loading and unloading area near your home. • Do use extra caution in school zones, at bus stops and at bus loading and unloading areas where high snow banks exist. • Do keep your windshield free of ice and snow. • Do know and follow the laws of your state regarding school buses. • Do drive safely - our winter climate, with its extreme weather conditions, short daylight and dangerous roads, requires extra effort by every driver.
With more students and snow at our bus stops here in Bethlehem, now’s a good time to go over with students, parents and drivers some winter bus-stop safety tips to ensure a safe and pleasant trip to school.
WINTER BUS SAFETY TIPS FOR STUDENTS: DOs • Do dress in warm winter clothing: hats, mittens and boots. • Do be on time at the bus stop. • Do walk facing traffic and wear bright clothing so you are visible in times of reduced light. • Do wait for the bus several feet further off the road in a safe place in winter weather. Be mindful that some stops may still have snow piles or drifts. • Do use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping and injuring yourself on icy road surfaces or steps. • Do keep your head and arms inside the windows when riding the bus to prevent frostbite and other injuries to your limbs and face. • Do move away from the bus to a place where the driver can see you and you can see the driver after you get off the bus. • Do cross 10 feet in from of the bus, but wait for the "all clear" signal from the driver before leaving the curb. • Do keep all pagers and articles in a backpack. DON'Ts • Don't stand or play on snow piles at the bus stop - you could slide into the street in the path of oncoming traffic. • Don't attempt to retrieve your books or lunchbox from around or underneath the bus until after it has cleared the unloading zone. • Don't push or shove when getting on or off the bus. • Don't chase after the bus or attempt to grab the rear bumper. Bus-stop safety doesn’t end with the student, however. Parents are responsible for their children's safety before and after they are transported on the bus, including at the bus stop. Drivers should always be mindful of student unloading and loading zones, but should take extra precaution at or near schools and bus stops during winter months. 26
DON'Ts • Don't be in a hurry. Student safety is important. • Don't try to catch the bus at another stop with your vehicle if your students miss their pick-up. Take them all the way to school. The bus driver may not see the car in back of the bus and as the students attempt to run along the side of the bus to board, they may fall underneath the wheels and be injured or killed. • Don't follow too closely behind the school bus making student stops. • Don't disregard the red flashing signals when following or facing a school bus. It is illegal - and dangerous - to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing. Keep these DOs and DON'Ts in mind and we can all do our part at home and on the road to keep Bethlehem's students safe!

Back Pain? Almost everyone can benefit from stretching the soft tissues - the muscles, ligaments and tendons - in the back, legs, buttock, and around the spine. The spinal column and its contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons are all designed to move, and limitations in this motion can make back pain worse. Patients with ongoing back pain may find it takes weeks or months of stretching and other back exercises to mobilize the spine and soft tissues, but will find that meaningful and sustained relief of back pain will usually follow the increase in motion. Keep the following in mind when starting a stretching routine as part of a program of back exercises: •Wear comfortable clothes that won’t bind; •Stretching should be pain free; do not force the body into difficult positions; •Move into the stretch slowly and avoid bouncing, which may actually tear muscles; •Stretch on a clean, flat surface that is large enough to move freely; •Hold stretches long enough (20-30 seconds) to allow muscles or joints to become loose; and •Repeat the stretch, generally 5 – 10 times.
PRACTICAL POINT Just 5 to 10 minutes of stretching in the morning and at night can provide significant lower back pain relief. If one already has low back pain or neck pain, it is best to check with a physician or physical therapist to discuss whether the following neck, shoulder and lower back pain exercises should be done.
Neck and Shoulder Stretches A stiff back is sometimes accompanied by a stiff neck. The following exercises can be done to stretch the neck and shoulder area. Flexion Stretch—Chin to Chest While standing or sitting, gently bend the head forward while bringing the chin toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the back of neck. Lateral Flexion—Ear to Shoulder This exercise stretches the neck area below the ears as well as the top of the shoulder. To begin, gently bend the neck to one side as if to touch the ear to the shoulder until a stretch is felt in the side of the neck. Switch to stretch the other side.
Back Exercise Stretches Many back pain patients know the feeling of tension in the back, especially first thing in the morning. These stretching back exercises can help bring back some suppleness and increase mobility, decreasing back pain and discomfort.
Back flexion exercise While lying on one’s back, pull both knees to the chest while simultaneously flexing the head forward until a comfortable stretch is felt in a balled-up position. Knee to Chest Stretch While lying on the back with the knees bent and both heels on the floor, place both hands behind one knee and bring it to the chest.
is very gentle on the back, and walking two to three miles three times per week is very helpful for patients. Walking also has the advantage of not requiring special equipment (except a good pair of shoes suitable for walking) and it can be done inside or outside, in almost any location, including at home on a treadmill.
Hips and Gluteus Stretches The hips and buttocks (where the gluteus muscles are) support the lower back, and stretching these muscle groups plays a pivotal role in maintaining spine flexibility. Hip stretch While standing with feet shoulder-width apart, take a half-step back with the right foot, bend the left knee and shift weight back to the right hip. While keeping the right leg straight, bend forward more and reach down the right leg until a stretch in the outer hip is felt. Piriformis muscle stretch The piriformis muscle runs through the buttock and can contribute to back pain or leg pain. To stretch the this muscle, lie on the back and cross one leg over the other and gently pull the other knee toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the buttock area.
Benefits of Aerobic Exercise Reconditioning through aerobic exercise is very useful for both rehabilitation and maintenance of the lower back. Patients who regularly use aerobic exercise to condition the back will benefit in several ways: •They have fewer episodes of low back pain, and will experience less pain when an episode occurs. •They are also more likely to stay functional (e.g. continue working and carry on with recreational activities), whereas those patients with chronic low back pain who do not engage in aerobic exercise are more likely to experience the gradual loss of functional capabilities. •It is easier to control weight or lose weight, decreasing the stress placed on the spine structures and joints. •An increased production of endorphins after 30 or 40 minutes of exercise can combat pain. These bio-chemicals are the body’s natural painkiller, and frequent release of them can help patients reduce their reliance on pain medication. •Endorphins can elevate mood and relieve symptoms of depression, a condition common in those with back pain or a back injury.
Types of Low Impact Exercise There are several types of aerobic exercise that are gentle on the back and, when done on a regular basis, highly effective in providing conditioning. WALKING. In general, walking for exercise
Online at www.ourtownebethlehem.com
STATIONARY BICYCLING. For patients who are more comfortable seated rather than standing, biking or stationary biking may be preferable. Bicycling or ‘spinning’ classes have grown in popularity over the last decade as more people realize the benefits of this lower impact form of exercise. There are several upright and recumbent (reclining) bikes that can be purchased for home use, and many come with programs preloaded so that patients have a good variety of sessions to choose. ELLIPTICAL TRAINER or STEP MACHINE. These machines provide a low-impact workout because the participant is using pedals suspended above the ground to move in a continuous oval motion, as opposed to continuously stepping on a hard surface. The motor on the machine facilitates a smoother step or forward glide motion, which is less jarring than walking. The benefit of these machines is that they provide an aerobic workout as well as strengthening or resistance training because the arms of most cross-training machines can be pushed and pulled, thus working the upper body, and the resistance of the pedaling motion increased to require greater muscle exertion to maintain the movement. Whatever low-impact exercise is used, the exercise should be vigorous enough to increase the heart rate to the target zone (which is scaled to the age of the patient) and keep it elevated. Elevating the heart rate for at least 20 minutes is required to improve cardiovascular strength, burn excess calories, and make noticeable strides in fitness.

CAR CARE TIPS Q. Do I need Snow tires? A. If you live in an area where the temperature is consistently below 45 degrees you do. Snow tires are not like All-Season tires. Snow tires have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow.
Q. How many Snow tires are recommended? A. Four. Of the hundreds of questions we get every year regarding Snow tires this is the most frequently asked. The answer is the same for every vehicle type, whether you drive a compact car or SUV.
Q. Do I need Snow tires to improve traction if my vehicle has Traction Control? A. Yes. Even though traction control optimizes the traction of your tires in adverse conditions by preventing wheel spin, this specialized system does not create additional tire traction. Traction always depends on the four contact patches created by the tires. The better traction your tires provide, the more effectively the traction control system will help you drive more safely. Cold temperatures will cause allseason compounds to harden, losing pliability and traction. See our Safety Below 45° article for more information.
Q. My vehicle has ABS brakes; does that eliminate the need for Snow tires? A. No. An ABS braking system prevents “locking-up” the brakes by “pulsing” them as you apply pressure to the pedal. Remember that the tires on your vehicle supply the traction and help the ABS deliver faster stops. Tires built with better winter traction will improve overall braking performance on ice, snow, and cold roads.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Are You Prepared for the
Unexpected?
When you’re working to achieve your financial objectives, you will encounter obstacles. Some of these can be anticipated — for example, you won’t be able to invest as much as you want for retirement because you have to pay for your mortgage. Other challenges can’t be easily anticipated, but you can still plan for them — and you should. Obviously, the word “unexpected,” by definition, implies an unlimited number of possibilities. However, at different stages of your life, you may want to watch for some “expected” unexpected developments. For example, during your working years, be prepared for the following: •Emergency expenses — If you needed a major car or home repair, could you handle it? What about a temporary job loss? These events are costly — especially if you are forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for them. To help guard against these threats, try to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, held in a liquid,
low-risk account. •Investment risk and market volatility — Extreme price swings are unpredictable, and they can affect your investment success. To defend yourself against wild gyrations in the market, build a diversified portfolio containing quality investments. While diversification, by itself, can’t protect against loss or guarantee profits, it can help reduce the effect of volatility on your portfolio. And here’s one more thing you can do to cope with the ups and downs of investing: Maintain a long-term perspective. By doing so, you won’t be tempted to overreact to shortterm downturns. •Long-term disability — One-third of all people between the ages of 30 and 64 will become disabled at some point, according to the Health Insurance Association of America. Disabilities can be economically devastating. As part of your benefits package, your employer may offer some disability insurance, but you may need to supplement it with private coverage. •Premature death — None of us can really predict our longevity. If something happens to you, would your family be able to stay in your home? Could your children still attend college? To protect these goals, you need adequate life insurance. As you approach retirement, and during your retirement years, you may
with Jerry Pittz
want to focus on these challenges: •Living longer than expected — You probably don’t think that “living longer than expected” is necessarily a bad thing. However, a longer-thananticipated life span also carries with it the risk of outliving your money. Consequently, you may want to consider investment solutions that can provide you with an income stream that you can’t outlive. Also, you’ll need to be careful about how much you withdraw each year from your various retirement and investment accounts. •Need for long-term care — If you had to stay a few years in a nursing home, the cost could mount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. These expenses could jeopardize your financial security, so you’ll need to protect yourself. You could “self-insure,” but as that would be extremely costly, you may want to “transfer the risk” to an insurance company. A financial professional can help explain your choices. None of us can foresee all the events in our lives. But in your role as an investor, you can at least take positive steps to prepare for the unexpected — and those steps should lead you in the right direction as you move toward your important goals.

A Guide To Keeping
Break it down and make it less intimidating.
Rather than one BIG end goal, dissect it into smaller pieces. Set several smaller goals to achieve throughout the year that will help you to reach the ultimate goal. Then even if you aren’t able to reach your final goal, you will have many smaller, but still significant, achievements along the way. We live in a throw-away society and even our resolutions, I’m afraid, are not immune. However, especially for promises that include improving our health it’s in our best interest to not take them lightly.
Ask friends and family members to help you so you have someone to be accountable to. Just be sure to set limits so that this doesn’t backfire and become more irritating than helpful. WHY SHOULD I QUIT SMOKING?
Every person who smokes has reasons to keep smoking and reasons to Quit? WHAT ARE YOURS? Tobacco use is the leading cause of death for men and women Did you know more women die from lung cancer than breast cancer? Smoking increases the risk of heart disease, cancer & lung disease How will your health impact the lives of your loved ones? Breathing in others smoke (second hand smoke) can cause asthma and other health problems. How does smoking affect your loved ones? Smokers who quit can expect to live approximately 10 years longer than those who continue to smoke. What would you do with 10 more years? If you smoke one pack per day, quitting smoking could save you up to $270 a month. How could you spend the money saved?
Are you ready to Quit? Most smokers find it takes a few quit attempts to be successful – you can do it. The chance of success is higher if you take a combination of approaches including setting a quit date, getting support and taking medication.
Get Ready Get Help + Get Medication = Stay Quit! Get Ready Set a quit date and stick to it. Post it on your refrigerator, put it in your calendar. Before the date, change the environment and things around you. For example, get rid of all the cigarettes and ashtrays in your home, car, and place of work. Stop letting people smoke in your home. Change your routines to help break the smoking habit. Get Help Tell your family, friends, and co-workers with that you are going to quit and ask them for their support. Talk with your doctor because they can help you quit. Call the New York State Smokers Quit Line: 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487) Get Medication Nicotine gum, the nicotine patch, and the nicotine lozenge can be purchased at a pharmacy. There are other prescription medicines that can also help such as nicotine nasal spray or inhaler, bupropion SR (tablet) or varenicline (tablet). Many health insurance plans will pay for these medications. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist about what product might be best for you. Stay Quit If you “slip” and smoke, don’t give up. Try again soon. Set a new quit date to get back on track. Avoid things that might trigger your smoking such as alcohol and being around smoking, certain foods or habits. Eating healthy, drinking lots of water and engaging in some physical activity can help fight cravings. Trish’s Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
Happy New Year Constant Readers, 2014…a New Year…an entire year in front of us! I hope that your Holiday Season was one filled with love, joy, good health and wonderful memories. Looking back over 2013, so much happened here at Tattered Pages! First, and foremost, I became the official owner in June as Larry & Barbara handed over the keys to me! These past 7 months have flown by. Over that time I have joined a business leads group of local merchants, donated hundreds of books to 10 different organizations for their fundraisers, donated to Blue Star Moms, opened a Facebook page for the shop (Tattered Pages LLC), and taken in thousands of books onto the shelves while making new friends and acquaintances who are “loyal to the printed-paper book”. Many customers have turned to the e-reader, but just as many have returned to the paper book because they like the feel, the smell, the affordability of our books, and the experience of reading from a “real” book. If in need of a “real” book, don’t forget that I have thousands here in next to new condition…and if you haven’t read it already, doesn’t that make it new to you? As I have written before; the e-reader has impacted the paper book business, but I think it has leveled off. I have a “kindle” which I use to cruise online, go on Facebook, check my e-mail, play scrabble & word games, and read articles, mainly because Seamus (my little long-haired dachshund) believes that laps are for adorable dogs not laptops! I do not read books on it, though! I am not sure, but I might burst into flames if I did that! Actually, I feel that I read slower on
the electronic screen. When I discussed this with others, I found out that I wasn’t the only one who suffered from “e-book moments, such as the screen light bothering our eyes, when adjusting print size slowing our reading speed, and it is just not the same experience as reading a real book. There is research online now that supports some significant differences between reading electronically vs. paper-book. It has been found that reading speed is overall slower on the e-reader. When used for academia, though there are many options that might improve the experience such as quizzes, audio and other multi-media options; the retention rate for learning has been discovered to be less when using e-books. Some studies suggest that there may be significant advantages in printed books if your goal is to remember what you read long-term. Another research stated, ““the evidence on balance...indicates that the basic finding is robust-- people do read more slowly from CRT displays vs paper books.” I know I did…now I have found support for that! USA Today, carried an article with a headline “We readers like the experience e-readers can’t duplicate, yet.” They cited that you can’t share the book once you have read it. You can’t personalize the gift. Though you can find books on them for free, they aren’t usually the books that you were looking for! The expense for e-readers is not coming down. Remember, when it comes to the paper book: 1. You can pass a book on, leave it to others, make notes in it and dedicate the book when giving as a gift. 2. As gifts go, you don’t need to remember size or color! 3. The collectability of books creates a library that can be seen. 4. The experience is tactile. You can decorate with them as well. As I passed the display of Christmas books in the shop…it brought a sense of the season. Seeing the children’s books displayed brought back memories of Christmases gone by, you certainly can’t reproduce that on an e-reader!

What books flew off the shelf in December? The Classics! I sold about every Dickens, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Conan Doyle, Poe and “high school” literature book. If any of you have any that you would like to bring in for “trade credits” I would appreciate it! Other big sellers were books in the History section; Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing Kennedy” and “Killing Lincoln” were very popular. Cookbooks!!! In the children’s section I found that Harry Potter was still sought after, Anime books, “Alex Rider” series, “Little House on the Prairie”, picture books by Robert Munsch, Berenstain Bears, and the “Black Lagoon Series”. I also sold more Sci-Fi/Fantasy books than in November. Contemporary Romance writers such as Robyn Carr, Kristin Hannah, Debbie Macomber, Nora Roberts, Jill Shalvis were purchased just about every day. I ran out of Bella Andre novels in romance. Remember romance books are a great way to “heat up” on a chilly January night! I hope that those of you who have read this article and love “print” books will remember Tattered Pages…and tell a friend or family member about us. As a small, locally owned business I depend on your spreading the word about the shop and….with over 18,000 titles , we just might have what you are looking for! When bringing in books for trade credit consideration, please remember no more than 6 books clean & free of odor (no boxes of books, please). DVDs no more than 10. Also, remember, that I am always available to search for a book for you & order it if I don’t have it on
the shelves. You can contact me on our Facebook page: Tattered Pages LLC or thru e-mail. In closing, I wish you all good health, happiness, and true enjoyment of “print” books in 2014!

Scrappy New Year! Another GLORIOUS year has gone by and we are ready to start off 2014 with new found purpose and determination. We are not going to just let things happen anymore. We are going to clean up our lives and make some changes for the better. Yes sir and/or ma’am, this year is going to be DIFFERENT! But as January slides into Spring, suddenly its hot out, then just as suddenly it’s getting colder, there’s a turkey on your plate and 12” of snow in your driveway. Don’t let this happen to you, Dear Reader! The good news is that some resolutions just take a simple phone call and then you can watch your problems (insert seasonal pun now) melt away, just like MAGIC! We can help. Some guidelines to follow to help you de-clutter your home and get things organized: • Start simple by cleaning one room or area of your home like the spare bedroom or garage and let that snowball (second seasonal pun, had to be done) into motivation to then organize the rest of your home. • Before you start, gather the right cleaners and tools to do the job effectively and, hey, for the sake of the children, PLEASE READ THE DIRECTIONS on all chemicals! • Don’t be a martyr-get everyone involved, assign tasks equally and make checklists to help you and your team stay focused. • Come up with a system for storing EVERYTHING in your house…labels out Julia Roberts fans! • Plan one additional task every day…5 minutes of extra effort will save you hours of work down the road. • Think twice before every new purchase made this year, and for every new item, remove at least one old item. • Establish a “One Year Rule”…if you haven’t worn or used something in one year and it does not have personal or high cost value, get rid of it! Scrapster is local family owned business which provides a NO COST scrap metal, appliance and electronics removal and recycling service. We are insured, convenient, and reliable. We provide top Quality work every time you need us. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. Our other services include LOW COST Junk Removal, Television Removal, and Clean Outs. To schedule an appointment, please call us at (518) 505-5055. Please also visit our website at www.scrapster.com for news, specials and information about recycling.

and Facebook, Bill Gates and Microsoft), there are just as many individuals, if not more, who “peaked late.” Mark Twain, Matisse and Alfred Hitchcock did their best work late in life.
Senior Living There are wonderful things inside of you that the world is waiting to see and hear. Have faith in yourself that you can do it. We are all meant to create. There is no age limit on inspiration, imagination, and inventiveness. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in creative expression and play, I often have patients come to me who want to create but have blocks in their selfexpression. Here is an example: “It is too late for me,” she said. “What do you mean, ‘it’s too late for me’?” I asked. “I missed my window. If I was going to be a writer I should have done it before I had kids. Now that they are grown, I finally have the time to write, just not the inspiration.” This conversation actually happened with a 64-yearold woman. She had been a junior copyrighter at an advertising agency on Madison Avenue and was moving up in the company when she met her husband and started her family many years earlier. She had always intended to write a novel but the demands of raising her two kids always came first so she put it off. Now that her children were grown and out on their own she wanted to write again but didn’t know how to begin. One of the things that was getting in her way was the sense that she was somehow “too old” to create. She told me that she thought that inspiration was the domain of the young — a common misconception. Many people believe that creativity only happens when you are young and “fresh.” While there are many examples of young creative geniuses (Mark Zuckerberg
A professor at the University of Chicago recently defined two types of creative souls – those who start young, shine bright and (often) burn out, and those who develop over time to produce their best work in the second half of life. Had masters like Frank Lloyd Wright or Alfred Hitchcock stopped pursuing their creative aspirations before their 60s and 70s, they never would have created some of their most highly regarded work — like Wright’s Falling Water (created at age 70) and Hitchcock’s North by Northwest and Vertigo (created after he was 60). My philosophy is that it’s never too late to create. The keys to developing your creative expression are Play and Consistency. Take time to open yourself up to your own playfulness and creative spirit. Creativity is all your own, it doesn’t have to fit any type or any shape. If you love to garden, express your creativity there. If you love words, become a storyteller. All you need to do in order to create is to consistently set aside time to express yourself. If going out and trying something new or something you haven’t done in a while feels scary or intimidating, express your creativity slowly, in small pieces, so that you can learn from your process. Remember, there are wonderful things inside of you that the world is waiting to see and hear. Have faith in yourself that you can do it. We are all meant to create. There is no age limit on inspiration, imagination, and inventiveness. Every single person has something to say and contribute to the world no matter how old. It is never too late to create!
