Ask the

Canterbury Vet May 15-21 is Dog Bite Prevention week. This event by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the US Post Office and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) focuses attention on preventing dog bites. With an estimated population of 70 million dogs living in U.S. households, millions of people – most of them children – are bitten by dogs every year. The majority of these bites, are preventable. The Insurance Information Institute estimates that in 2013, insurers across the country paid over $483 million in dog bite claims. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 26,935 reconstructive procedures were performed in 2013 to repair injuries caused by dog bites. Children, elderly, and postal carriers are the most frequent victims of dog bites. Dogs may bite for many reasons. All dogs, even well trained, gentle dogs, are capable of biting when provoked. To reduce the number of injuries to people and the risk of relinquishment of dogs that bite, consider the following suggestions: For Children (and adults): Never approach an unknown dog or a dog that is alone without an owner. Always ask for permission before petting the dog. Never approach an injured animal — find an adult who can get the help needed. Do not disturb a dog that is eating, chewing on a toy, sleeping or nursing puppies. Don’t poke, hit, pull, pinch or tease a dog. How do you avoid a dog bite? Start by being polite and respecting the dog’s personal space. Never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one who is tied or confined behind a fence or in a car. Don’t pet a dog—even your own— without letting him see and sniff you first. Be cautious around strange dogs. Always assume that a dog who doesn’t know you may see you as an intruder or a threat. Pay attention to the dog’s body language. Put a safe amount of space between yourself and a dog if you see the following indicating that the dog is uncomfortable 10

and might feel the need to bite: -tensed body - stiff tail - pulled back head and/or ears -yawning -flicking tongue -intense stare -backing away What to do if you think a dog may attack: Resist the impulse to scream and run away. When putting space between yourself and a dog who might bite, never turn your back on him and run away. A dog’s natural instinct will be to chase you. Remain motionless, hands at your sides, and avoid eye contact with the dog. Once the dog loses interest in you, slowly back away until he is out of sight. If the dog does attack, “feed” him your jacket, purse, bicycle or anything that you can put between yourself and the dog. If you fall or are knocked to the ground, curl into a ball with your hands over your ears and remain motionless. Try not to scream or roll around.

Never put your dog in a position where she feels threatened. Also, keep your dog away from stressful situations Walk and exercise your dog regularly to keep her healthy and to provide mental stimulation. Use a leash in public to ensure you are able to control your dog. Regular veterinary care is essential to maintain your dog’s health; a sick or injured dog is more likely to bite. Spay or neuter your dog. This important procedure will reduce your dog’s desire to roam and fight with other dogs. Spayed or neutered dogs are much less likely to bite. Don’t allow your dog to roam. Your dog is a member of your family: Dogs who spend a great deal of time alone in the backyard or tied on a chain often become dangerous. Dogs who are well-socialized and supervised are much less likely to bite. Be alert, if someone approaches you and your dog - caution them to wait before petting the dog, give your pet time to be comfortable with a stranger. There is no way to guarantee that your dog will never bite someone. But you can significantly reduce the risk. As always, talk with your vet if you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health and behavior.

Please send all your veterinary questions to:

For Dog Owners: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Never leave a baby or small child alone Animal Hospital with a dog, even if it is a family pet. 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 12054 Interactions between children and dogs 439-2700 should always be monitored to ensure the safety of both your child and your dog. Teach your children to treat the dog with respect and not to engage in rough or aggressive play. Make sure your pet is socialized as a young puppy so it feels at ease around people and other animals. Teach your dog appropriate behavior. Do not teach your dog to chase after or attack others, even in fun. Your dog can not always understand the difference between play and real-life situations. Set appropriate limits for your dog’s behavior. The first time he exhibits dangerous behavior toward any person, seek professional help from your www.canterburyvet.com veterinarian, an animal behaviorist, or a qualified dog 88 Delaware Ave, Delmar NY 12054 + 439-2700 trainer.

BAILEY’S GARAGE

CAR CARE TIPS Spring Showers Bring

Driving Safety Hazards Worn out tires and windshield wiper blades are symptoms of neglected vehicle maintenance that put drivers and passengers at serious risk during the typically rainy months of spring. Thin tire treads create hazardous driving conditions when water builds up on the roadway, according to the Car Care Council. Deep tread accommodates accumulated water; thin tread does not. Thin tread causes the tire to hydroplane – ride up on a film of water, losing contact with the pavement, similar to driving on ice. The simplest way to check tire tread depth is with a penny. Insert the penny into the grooves of the tread. If you are able to see all of Lincoln’s head, the tire needs replacement. Rainy weather also affects driver visibility. Because 90 percent of driving decisions depend on good vision, a clean windshield is imperative. Streaking and smearing impair vision and are caused by worn windshield blades. One out of every five vehicles that went through the Car Care Council’s check lanes had worn wiper blades. “Replacing worn wiper blades is easy and inexpensive,” said Rich White of the Car Care Council. “Why put it off until there’s a downpour and your blades are chattering and smearing the windshield?”

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Talk to Your Adult Children About Smart Financial Moves If you have children who are finishing college or embarking on their first full-time job, you obviously want them to get off to a good start in their adult and working lives. And by virtue of your years of experience, you probably have some good advice to offer – especially when it comes to making smart financial moves. Of course, you can find a broad array of financial topics to discuss. But if you want to concentrate on just a few, you might consider these for starters: •Investing for the future – When young people are paying off student loans, they may not think they can also afford to invest for the future. Indeed, this can be challenging – but it’s not impossible. So, if your children go to work for an employer that offers a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), you may want to point out that they can have money automatically invested – and since they never really “had” this money in the first place, they are less likely to miss it. They can start by deferring small amounts; when their earnings rise, they can increase their contributions.

with Jerry Pittz

do buy a house, though, and their incomes go up as their careers progress, they may wonder if they should pay down their mortgage quicker. While they might feel good about lowering that debt, you may want to point out that an argument could be made for putting money in assets that will likely be more liquid, such as stocks and bonds. For one thing, if your children were to lose their jobs, and they needed cash to tide them over until they were once again employed, they’d likely find it much harder to get money out of their homes than their investment accounts. Also, in terms of accumulating resources for retirement, they might better off building up their investment portfolios, rather than sinking every extra dollar into their homes. •Using credit wisely – Urge your children to avoid taking on excessive credit card debt and taking out nonessential loans. As you know, having a good credit score can pay off in several ways, including getting better rates on mortgages. You may want to risk sounding “old fashioned” by encouraging your children to live within their means. And consider pointing out that it’s often the people who are the most frugal today who may end up with the most money tomorrow. It’s not always easy for young people to get off on the right foot, financially speaking. But as someone who knows a thing or two about controlling debt, saving and investing, you can help your children out by imparting a few words of wisdom.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

•Buying a home and paying off a mortgage – With interest rates still low, now is not a bad time for prospective firsttime homebuyers. Of course, if your children truly are starting out in the working world, it will likely take them a few years to save up enough for a down payment. But even after they reach that goal, you may want to warn them not to become “house poor” by spending a large portion of their total income on home ownership. If they

101 Acre Ranch Walt Wright’s Riding School By Susan E. Leath

Wright Lane, off of North Street in Delmar is appropriately named. Members of the Wright family have lived here at the family farm for 100 or more years. For many years in the 1930s and early 40s Walter Wright advertised his riding school in local directories and newspapers. His 101 Acre Ranch was located “three-quarters of a mile north of the Delmar depot, at the end of North street.” Wright lured customers by writing “if you want to keep healthy and well, try horseback riding,” and by touting his years of experience teaching horseback riding. He advertised his “very fine mounts” and “exceptionally fine horses” promising riders “you will find you always enjoy yourself when riding at this place.” Walter Wright was born in Elsmere in 1890, the son of Frances Free Wright and Mary Grant. He married Olive Tolhurst McNary in 1910 in an outdoor wedding under an elm tree officiated by the Rev. George Woddall, pastor of the Delmar Methodist Church. Soon thereafter they, along with his parents and siblings, had moved to the 100+ acre farm on North Street. The 1913 Family Directory of Delmar clearly shows the two families

living next door to each other at “Adams Street, North.” One household has Mr. & Mrs. Frances Wright with three of their five children, Russell, Edgar and Edith. The other is Walter and Olive and their daughter Esther. Walter and Edith would have two other children, Dorothy and Walter, Jr. Esther Wright grew up to marry Leland Wright of Slingerlands. Her mother Olive took great pains to ensure that Leland Wright was in no way related. Esther and Leland lived in the tenant house on the farm in turn raising their family: Leland Scott, Olive Mae and Edwin. Olive Mae Wright Hallenbeck has many fine memories of growing up at her grandfather’s farm in the late 1930s, 40s and early 50s. She remembers the lack of electricity and running water, the horses and chickens, and the gang of playmates she had on North Street. She also remembers the long walk along the dirt road to the Delmar Grade School (today’s Town Hall.)

Esther and Dorothy Wright pose in their riding gear with a cowboy. Olive Mae Hallenbeck described the man in the center as a member of a country music band who came to ride at the ranch.

27

The North Street Gang about 1950. Olive Mae Wright is second from the left in the back row.

Halloween was a big event for the Wright siblings. From left to right are Eddie, Scotty and Olive Mae about 1950. The house in the background still stands on Wright Lane. The barns in the background do not.

Olive was part of the first class to complete all four years at the new Bethlehem High School, graduating in 1956. Known as “Ollie” in high school, her activities included bowling club, chorus and rifle club. One of her hobbies was, of course, horseback riding.

There is still a Wright family cousin living at the end of Wright Lane. Over the years, the 101 Acre Ranch was subdivided creating parcels around the main farmhouse and the smaller tenant house with a larger tract owned by the town of Bethlehem.

Today, traveling out North Street from Delmar, and thence to Wright Lane, one quickly leaves suburbia behind with the land retaining a rural feel.

Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York, the latest book by town historian Susan E. Leath is now. The book compiles Leath’s Our Towne Bethlehem articles plus her other writings about local history. “I hope the people and places highlighted in the book will enrich the reader’s experience of our town,” said Leath. “In the rush of our daily lives, I hope people will slow down and remember where we come from and those who went before us. Local history, the kind that is hiding in plain sight right around us, touches on so many larger historic themes like the American Revolution or the Civil War.”

Walter Wright and Olive Tolhurst McNary, probably around the time of their wedding in 1910.

28

Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York, published by the History tory Press, is available for sale at the Town Clerk’s office at Town wn Hall, I Love Books in Delmar, ar, Tattered Pages in Glenmont, t, and many other retailers rs including online. All of thee author’s royalties will bee donated to the Bethlehem Historical Association.

BETHLEHEM Y EXCEEDS ANNUAL CAMPAIGN GOAL

Thank you Bethlehem! It sounds like the concluding farewell of Bruce Springsteen concert at the Y sport court (I wish), but it’s actually a sincere thanks from the YMCA to our members, supporters, staff and volunteers for helping the Bethlehem Y exceed its 2016 Annual Campaign fund goal by raising $122,000. In just the last five years, the Bethlehem YMCA has more than doubled the amount raised for our Annual Campaign. That tremendous growth means we can help support many more families in our community. For thousands of families and individuals in Bethlehem, your contributions open the door to summer camp, swimming lessons, youth sports, recreation, before and after school programs, day care, wellness programs, programs that teach teenagers strong core values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, and our Circle of Champs programs that provides respite and support for families of children facing serious illnesses. We are dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the area’s health and well-being, and giving back and providing support to our neighbors. Your gifts are truly investments in helping children become the strong, caring, and responsible citizens we want for our community. The YMCA believes that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, no matter their background or income. The Y never denies anyone access to our programs and facilities due to an inability to pay. It’s only because of your contributions to our Annual Campaign scholarship program that we can make, and keep, that commitment. And every penny raised stays right here in Bethlehem. Annual Campaign scholarships are provided to older adults who participate in age-appropriate wellness classes and Pedaling for Parkinson’s. Scholarships may be used to help middle-age parents who need child care while they can look for employment. Or, funds could be used to help low-income families that simply need financial assistance so they can use the Y for family recreation. When you consider all of the programs that are supported by our annual campaign, and the thousands of people in town that are helped by scholarships and assistance from this effort, it’s clear that the YMCA is so much more than a gym and we sincerely thank everyone for their support and participation in all that we do. Together we are working to make our community a better place. In particular, the Bethlehem YMCA would like to thank the many corporate and group organizations for their contributions, including: Advantage Tree Service, Vic’s Town Barbershop, The Mullen Group, Stewarts Shops, The Slingerland Foundation, Sherwin Williams (Delmar), SABIC, Roux restaurant, Rotary Club of Delmar, O’Connor, O’Connor, Bresse & First, National Grid US Community Giving, Maynard, O’Connor, Smith & Catalinotto, Hill

& Markes, Henry Gagnon & Son’s General Contractor, Girvin & Ferlazzo P.C., Geurtze Builders, General Electric Company, First Niagara Bank, Field Goods LLC, F5 Networks, Edward Jones, and the Delmar Rotary Foundation Inc.. In addition the Y would like to thank: Cub Scout Pack 232, CommerceHub, Christmas Wish Campaign, Capital Financial Planning Charitable Foundation, C.L. King/Paradigm Investment, Bethlehem Youth Hockey, Bethlehem Police Supervisors Association Inc.; Bethlehem Police Benevolent Association, Bethlehem Hockey Boosters, Bank of America, American Clothing Recycling Co, Inc., Adirondack Beverage, “Myplace” Hockey Team, and the Bethlehem YMCA Advisory Board and the YMCA staff. Again, thank you to everyone who has supported the Y’s effort to help our community and we look forward to building and growing that support next year.

WITH APOLOGIES TO DR. SEUSS Camels and buffalo and bears, oh wow. Giraffes and monkeys and zebras and how. Those are just some things you will eye when you go to summer camp at the Bethlehem Y. Water slides, cruises, a trip to the lake, the kids at the Y say our camp is great. Mini-golf, parks, a big mountain hike, at YMCA summer camp there’s so much to like. A summer with fun, a summer with friends, at Y summer camp, the fun never ends. So go tell your mom and say to your dad, you want the best camp around to be had. If you want the best summer with smiles every day, please sign up for camp at the YMCA. The exotic animals at Adirondack Animal Land are just one of the many great field trip adventures planned for kids that attend summer camp at the Bethlehem YMCA this year. We are also going to Great Escape, Prospect Mountain, Water Slide World, High Adventure at Howe Caverns, a JP Morgan Cruise, Grafton Lake State Park, and more. The field trips, combined with our terrific camp staff and daily activities of fun, games, crafts, swimming, and play make for the best summer camp around. It is also a great value and very accommodating for working parents. Summer vacation from school will be starting before you know it, so either go online at cdymca.org or stop by the Bethlehem YMCA to sign your kids up for a great, fun summer.

My Dear Constant Reader, As I compose this article, I am being held hostage by technology! I have been experience a flux in the force for the past month! I actually could track back my problems to that darned extra Leap day in February. My life has lost its “sync” and whether it is dealing with my new nemesis of “gravity” (books physically flying off the shelf just missing Seamus‛ little head, or the domino effect on my top shelf of children‛s books) or the daily challenges and surprises of my computer system at work…I am a bit cranky today because these following things have happened to interrupt my “flow”. My wireless mouse stopped working, my internet is not connecting to my PC but works well wirelessly to my tablet & laptop, my receipt printer is not being recognized and now my barcode labeler is not recognized by my computer! Arrggghhh. When this works…life is so much smoother. Without these, work backs up tremendously, especially labeling and putting new inventory on the shelf. Since Seamus is of no help with this aspect of the job, I am frustrated! Add the chance of getting the stomach virus along with this…and having to close the shop while recovering…I need to stop, breathe, stop, breathe again and try to figure out how to move on. I still have some brain fog and the only other shop worker to share this with licks my face when I ask for help or ideas. As I always tell others, this too will pass! I just need to make my deadline and get this article in. As May is upon us…the door is open most days, the birds relentlessly attempt to build that nest in the shops store name letters and above the door. The fresh air is invigorating and Seamus & I have even sat outside a few afternoons enjoying the sunshine as I read another chapter of Dan Brown‛s “Inferno”. I decided to revisit another adventure thriller by Brown (author of DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons) since I had recently watched and read some other authors materials on the theories & history of Hell. I find this one riveting, fast paced and providing the interest that I needed in this reading experience. I have a sign outside the store that says “You, a book and your imagination” ~ the adventure begins inside and an arrow into the shop. With over 18,000 titles all conveniently categorized and on my data base, the shopping experience is not unlike a standard book shop but with some big exceptions: better service, value, great selection and most books are in gift giving quality. With my over 30 years of background in education, I am always available to help you connect children with just the right books. Most of my children‛s chapter books range under $5. Remember you can always contact me by phone, website or message on Facebook if you are looking for something. I will do the search, and if I have it, I will hold it behind the counter for you until you come in. If I don‛t have it, I can always order it for you, and unlike many stores, I pass 40

the savings on to you, taking a small margin for myself. Don‛t let other fancier stores tell you something is out of print or unavailable…it probably means it isn‛t worth their trouble to get the book for you. Shinier & fancier doesn‛t mean better now, does it really? Besides, you money goes so much further in a shop where the prices are reduced 20-60% off publisher‛s asking prices. Sure, Amazon sells for a penny, but the cheapest you can usually get a book with Prime is $3.49…I might have it cheaper, especially if you have my bonus trade credits. May is a time of remembrances…Mother‛s & Memorial Day… and for many…memories of Mother‛s. My mother loved to brag about my love of books to others. Books, dance, music, and swimming…these were not my hobbies but an inherent part of who I was…in many ways who I am. I found and formed my identity through these media. I constantly wanted “input”, answers to my inquiries and loved the hands on approach. I was one of those suburbanite kids who rode her bike with a canteen, an apple, a beach towel & a book in her saddle bag (we didn‛t have backpacks back then). I would head off to the grass fields behind our neighborhood in Westmere (where there is a currently fashionable neighborhood with tennis courts & circular driveways) to meet up with my friends or do a solo afternoon with a book, the clouds overhead and my imagination. Don‛t let your children/grandchildren miss out on that simple pleasure. I love seeing the children at Elm St. Ave. Pool stretched out with their books in the summer! We have enough technology in our lives, and don‛t get me wrong, I love it & I need it, but don‛t miss out on that simple pleasure that a book can bring into your life. In the time that I have taken to write this the laptop has shut down or frozen twice. My PC still won‛t connect to the internet! I will resolve…because a an entrepreneur I have no other choice! I want to thank all of my regular & new customers for the support this past month. Celebrating Seamus‛ birthday was special and hey, my birthday to come in a few days will be extra special with the assistance of my 9 year old granddaughter Trinity who will be in the shop all day with me! In closing, may May bring you sunshine, meaningful

moments & joy and if you come in to buy a book for your Mom, mention that and receive another 10% off your purchase. As always, teachers always receive 10% off if they mention that they are teachers. By the way, I have several copies of “Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York” by Susan Leath left in the shop! Until next month…Happy Reading & please tell a friend about the unique little bookshop in Glenmont, Tattered Pages.

The Friendship Singers will be presenting their final Spring concert:

7:30PM on Saturday, May 21. at the Delmar Reformed Church 386 Delaware Avenue in Delmar, NY. This concert is free of charge and open to the public. There will be cookies and punch served during the brief intermission at which time a free will offering may be made for the benefit of the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. Recently the Friendship Singers have been providing entertainment at at a number of senior residences in the surrounding area. This year, we are fortunate to have four choreographers and a new full-time accompanist for our program of old favorites, upbeat and sassy, or mellow and slinky (and swing the eighths!) as the directions for one of our songs reads.

Dick Feldman, former English teacher at Bethlehem Central Junior High, has choreographed songs for several of the Friendship Singers concerts and for many productions of local groups. He has also danced professionally. Dick choreographed “New York, New York.” We would like to recognize Peg Dorgan, long-time former director of St. Thomas the Apostle choir in Delmar, a retired music teacher and accompanist for various groups, who is now the full-time accompanist for Friendship Singers. Also featured will be Bill Reusswig on drums. We are grateful for the energy and talent all these people bring to us, and we hope you will enjoy the results as much as we do.

Our dance designers and their major pieces are: Marie Liddle, retired music teacher who joined the group in 1993 and who has been our director for most of that time to the present, is the choreographer for “Ma, He’s Makin’ Eyes At Me”, and “If My Friends Could See Me Now”. Suzanne Mason was an elementary school teacher (Schalmont.) She is active with the Niskayuna Reformed Church, and is the choreographer for “Steam Heat" and "Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree". Kitty Murphy was a high school tennis coach. Besides being active in the Friendship Singers, she is presently director of the Tri-County Banjo Band, in which she also performs with her husband, Bert. Kitty has sung with many local groups. She is the choreographer for the medley, “Broadway ShowStoppers.”

CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP FOR CHRONIC AND TERMINAL ILLNESSES Providing care for a loved one who has a chronic and/or terminal illness is one of the hardest jobs any one can do. The hours are long and can be never-ending. The physical and emotional toll it takes on Caregivers is enormous and often overlooked. Out of love and devotion Caregivers tend to just keep going, ignoring their own well-being. Many Caregivers never take the time to renew, refresh and share their journey. We recognize the need for a place for caregivers to share their struggles and successes with others who understand. You are not alone! Bethlehem Senior Services will be holding an open Support Group for Caregiver of those with chronic and/ or terminal illness. Illnesses can be Cancer, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, COPD, Cardiac, MS, TBI or other chronic and/or terminal illnesses. Group will be held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 10:30 – 12:00 at the Town Hall, Meeting room 101A. Group will be facilitated by Heidi Ziemke, LCSW-R, Outreach Worker with Bethlehem Senior Services. If you are interested, please contact Heidi Ziemke at 439-4955 x1169.
