A letter from Bethlehem Town Hall Dear OUR TOWNE Readers: I will be completing my term as your Town’s Supervisor on December 31, 2011. I will miss serving you and working with Bethlehem’s exceptionally capable Town staff. I feel energized and positive about Bethlehem’s future and I sense this optimism all around Bethlehem. This optimism has everything to do with how we feel about our community, our willingness to work together in constructive and non-partisan ways, and a realization that as we continue to put our community first we can turn any challenge into opportunity. Let me share with you three of many examples that should provide all of us confidence that Bethlehem is on track “to be the best it can be.” The Bethlehem 20/20 Advisory Implementation Committee has been a strong voice of independent volunteer community leaders who have devoted their time and extensive talents to help us lead Bethlehem to new levels of professionalism and governance. During my time as Supervisor, the 20/20 Committee has had a clear and positive impact on major policy issues facing Bethlehem. They advocated for the unification of Bethlehem’s water system saving $1.6 million annually and strongly supported the Town and the Bethlehem Industrial Development Agency initiative to employ creative financing mechanisms to advance the Vista Technology Campus in Slingerlands. Through all of these efforts, the 20/20 Committee has provided the Town Board with independent policy advice resulting in sound decisions regarding economic wellbeing, employment opportunities and the overall quality of our Town. The 20/20 Committee has demonstrated the courage to question the status quo. It is never easy, and sometimes unpopular, to explore alternative approaches to management and governance at the Town level, even when there are potential cost reductions and efficiencies. Systems of governance and politics do not change easily, but we must remember that we function better as a community when we are willing to engage in a dialogue that helps us openly consider other options and challenges “the way we’ve always done it.” The 20/20 Committee has helped our Town by providing a uniquely valuable public forum to study and discuss important and controversial issues. The Committee is now focusing on the foundation of the entire 20/20 initiative -energized public involvement! Jon Audietis | American Farmer Chances are you’ve seen him, strolling through the Delmar Farmers Market on any given Saturday. Cup of coffee in hand, he leaves his tables full of deep green kale and ripe tomatoes to talk to customers and call out to friends. Even far away from his carrots, onions, melon and squash, when he isn’t talking about his cauliflower or how soon the corn is coming in, you’ll know Farmer Jon. No matter when or where it is, you’ll recognize him. Jon Auditetis stands out in a crowd: tall, work boots, hands that tell of a long day, digging and fixing machines and always, always: the shirt. Tan, buttondown, neat and pressed and just over the left breast pocket, his name, written in red letters, so you’ll know who he is. He’s Farmer Jon. Jon grew up in Connecticut, the only child of divorced parents. At the age of 15, his father helped him get a job, working for a local farmer. This early work experience helped him form opinions of how he would - and wouldn’t, run a farm. Jon went on to graduate from SUNY Cobleskill with a degree in agriculture. From there, he stayed close to the Hudson Valley, working on farms and keeping his hands in the soil. One of the jobs he had, working for an educational farm center for school children, is where he first became known as Farmer Jon. There, kids would come for afternoon field trips. They’d sit in a classroom, learning about farms and how they work. Then, they’d get to do the fun stuff: ride the tractor and meet the farmer - the guy who grew the crops and kept the machinery in working order. Kids would see him from a distance and call out, “Farmer Jon! Farmer Jon!” Eventually, though he loved the kids, he left to do exactly what he wanted: farm his own land. The job didn’t last, but the name did. The Hudson Valley proved to be an excellent place for Jon to settle in and plant his roots. With his father only 90 minutes south and plenty of rich, fertile land to farm, it felt like the right place to be. Most of the acreage he farms is off of Wemple Road in Glenmont. The rest of his property is located at his house, in Selkirk where Jon farms a few acres. He also keeps his greenhouse and tractors there. The greenhouse is heated with a stove that burns corn cobs, of all things. It’s pretty cool, the cycle on his farm: he grows and harvests the corn, then uses the cobs to heat the greenhouse, the one that protects and helps to grow his seedlings every spring. 18

Talking about his crops, Farmer Jon tells of his favorite crop to grow: green beans. “I love to grow green beans, love to eat them, too. It’s the picking that I hate. Oh, how I hate to pick green beans.” But sitting around, complaining about green beans isn’t really Jon’s style. Instead, he’s building a machine. One that will pick the green beans for him. He’s had some success with building his own machines, and uses his own transplanter for spring planting. It’s a contraption that fits onto a regular tractor, and punches holes in the ground, fills the holes with water, and a seedling is deposited there. Almost better than the work the machine does for him, is the satisfaction of having built it himself. Jon was raised to believe that as long as he’s working hard, there isn’t anything he can’t do. He lives by the quote that he adapted to fit his farming lifestyle: “You have to be a jack of all trades and master of all trades to succeed.” Farmer Jon loves to tinker and build his own equipment so much, that he’s working on building an electric tractor. Between the planting, farmers market and picking, that is. The electric tractor isn’t operational, not yet, but give Jon some time and it will be.

“You have to be a jack of all trades and master of all trades to succeed.” He talked about another beloved crop: the pumpkin. Clearly a favorite among his consumers, he concedes that this year hasn’t been the best for pumpkins. And not just because of Hurricane Irene. Jon’s fields survived the storm, but this season has been tough, even before Irene became national news and devastating for many. There was the hot, dry start and then the rain, followed by more dry conditions. Weather that new plants don’t love. Jon tells of his technique for battling too much rain. He builds elevated beds. It’s a simple, but smart idea that keeps crops from soaking up too much water. Using his tractor and an attachment pulled along behind, he builds up each row, so it stands 10-12 inches above the space between rows. This way, the water falls on the plants, they soak up what’s needed, and the rest flows down, away from the plants and into the earth. Of course, for many, even farming this way wouldn’t have changed what the hurricane did to their fields. It’s helped Farmer Jon, though, in this super dry and then very wet season. This season’s been spent working on machines, planting, harvesting, negotiating with Mother Nature on the water in his fields, but also at his farm stands. There’s one on Delaware Ave, in front of Ace Hardware. You can also find Farmer Jon’s produce in front of Mt. Moriah Christian Academy on Rte 9W in Glenmont and the always-open farm stand on the corner of Wemple and 9W. Saturdays, of course, he spends at the Delmar Farmers Market.

Completely devoted to his father and the idea of a family, he says, “Sometimes I stop and listen to my house, and how completely quiet it is.” Perhaps, just as his crops sprout and grow in the greenhouse each spring, there will be small footsteps in his house as well. Farmer Jon plans for the future, and when asked about what he’d like to be doing in ten years, he tells of a few dreams he has. One is to improve on his 50’x60’ greenhouse. Triple the size, in fact. Once his greenhouse is bigger, he’s considering something completely new: raising fish. The idea is to build an aquaponics greenhouse. Tilapia would live in big tanks, and their waste would feed plants, year-round. The plants clean the water, circulating it back into the tanks. The tilapia, with their high protein, low fat meat, would be sold to fish markets and directly to consumers. Another area Jon’s has been looking to grow is his CSA. Community Supported or Community Shared Agriculture is a form of “subscription farming.” The model he is following is not the typical CSA. Instead of customers picking up a box of vegetables every week, Jon set up his CSA this way: customers purchase a punch card. Each week, or as often as they like, they shop his farm stands, choosing what vegetables they like. This works well for people who would rather pick what their family likes. Or for folks who travel. They don’t have to pick up vegetables every week. Only when it suits them. Thinking about the future, and the one thing that’s

Financially, Bethlehem is on solid ground and not “at the edge of a cliff.” Compared to nearly all other communities I have considered our Town is in good shape, relatively and absolutely. Bethlehem’s AA Bond rating attests to that. We have consistently taken actions that strengthen our financial condition and provide necessary balance. We have kept our tax levy increase to zero or low, unified our water system (saving $1.6 million annually), reduced personnel and non-personnel expenses, and maintained responsible fund balance levels. For 2012, we are positioned to substantially reduce the use of fund balances. And while being fiscally prudent, we have maintained and, in some cases, improved the quality of services. Going into 2012, we are poised to take other important actions. Specifically: 1) We have better information available to financially and operationally commit to a capital plan to address our aging water, sewer and facility infrastructure. 2) To further rightsize our budget, greater citizen involvement, rigorous analysis and the courage of elected officials will be necessary to distinguish between essential and nonessential services and identify options to reduce costs. And 3) Implement actions to deal effectively with: a) the 2% tax cap, b) the unpredictable and daunting increases in employee retirement costs, and c) find ways to recognize our outstanding Town staff through cost-ofliving adjustments and performance advancements. Lastly, economic development. We need to continue to grow appropriate economic development revenue streams to ensure our economic wellbeing, now and in the future. On Monday, October 3rd, we will start to see major earthwork beginning on the Vista Technology Campus in Slingerlands. The Town Board approved the Master Plan for the Vista campus in July, 2007. The Master Plan allows 80% Primary Uses (Tech, Office, Medical) and 20% Secondary Uses (commercial, retail). Planning Board approvals are in place for Phases 1A and 1B and the Financing Agreement with the Bethlehem IDA is imminent. Phase IA includes the road, Vista Blvd., the backbone of all infrastructure, and a 40,000 square foot office building. Phase 1B encompassed 97,000 square feet of primary uses and 90,500 square feet of secondary uses. 20

The excitement of Vista’s start is expected to generate further interest in technology and oﬃce space. Establishment of the attractive secondary businesses will provide support for the major uses and to the surrounding community. Many Town oﬃces worked closely with the developers and owners to bring a first class campus to our Town. Now we will watch it grow, and reap the fiscal and employment benefits for our Town. From an economic development perspective it is critical to advance multiple projects. We are moving forward on approaches to implement the Slingerlands Hamlet Master Plan, including the Picotte Building on Mahar Road, the north side of New Scotland Ave. to the intersection of the Captain Timothy Mosher Highway. We will also move to create an economic development plan in the Selkirk Rail Yard area. This initiative will involve new business development, transportation systems and mutually beneficial cooperation among taxing jurisdictions, developers and property owners. A lot has been going on and Bethlehem is now prepared to do more that will keep our community great. Cancer Awareness Month. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is an international effort every year to increase the awareness of the disease and to help raise funds for research that will help with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and a cure. Providing support and information to those affected by breast cancer is also a main goal of NBCAM. NBCAM was started in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries. It was a weeklong event focused on filling the public’s information void related to breast cancer. During that first week-long event, NBCAM concentrated on promoting mammography as the best way to fight breast cancer and lobbied for wide-spread access. Later, in 1993, the Vice President of Estee Lauder, Evelyn Lauder, founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol. Around that time the pink ribbon was also being used by the Susan G. Komen Foundation during its NYC race for breast cancer survivors. Today, every October features various events around the country to draw attention to NBCAM and the need to continue to raise funds and provide support. All over the country people take part in the Race for the Cure, a 5k run or walk. Locally, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was held on October 1st at the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany. Other events around the country include the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, in which participants walk over 39 miles in 2 days, and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, in which participants walk 60 miles in 3 days. 24

There are various other ways that people and organizations make a nod to NBCAM. Each October the National Football League dons pink gloves and pink cleats in honor of NBCAM. Many international monuments are lit up pink in order to commemorate the celebration, as was the White House in 2008. People also have “pink days” where for a designated day a work all employees donate money and wear pink with the money raised going to breast cancer charities. So remember this month to wear your pink to show your support of NBCAM. Check out the events going on around our area or organize a “pink day” where you work. Q: We’re thinking about getting a dog for our family and wanted to go to the shelter. Any advice? October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests people who are looking for “man’s best friend” to check out the millions of dogs at local shelters across the country. However, responsible pet ownership requires more than simply agreeing to take an animal into your life; the potential adopter should be ready to make a commitment that will enhance the lives of both the human and the animal. Shelter animals make good pets and proper training is the key. Owners that train their dogs have better relationships with their pets and fewer problems in the home. Most people don’t realize that training is not as difficult as one would think. Training should be fun for both the pet owner and the dog and, in fact, usually strengthens the bond between them. According to The ASPCA, people bringing a companion animal into their lives need to thoroughly review their lifestyle and their readiness to take responsibility for the animal’s care. The ASPCA advises people to consider the five questions below before they adopt a dog: 1. Am I ready to make a long-term commitment? Adopting a pet means being responsible for it’s health and happiness for the rest of his or her life, which could be up to 15 or more years for dogs. 2. Is the animal right for my household? A strong, active pet may be too much for a young child or elderly person to handle. Small pets may be too delicate for rough play with children. 3. Who will be the primary caretaker for the animal? One adult in the home should be designated as the primary caretaker so that the pet’s needs do not become lost in the shuffle of busy schedules. 4. Can I afford the animal? The cost of a pet is more than just the purchase price or adoption fee; remember to include the cost of food, pet supplies, veterinarian bills and training. 5. Am I ready to commit to making this dog a good canine citizen? Research shows that people who take the time to train their dogs are more likely to keep them longer than people who don’t.

Greetings fellow readers, September has always felt like the beginning of Ok, where did our summer go? It contained no more and no fewer days than years in the past…but it seemed to fly by. When I was younger, summers were filled with long, lazy days of bike riding, swimming, hiking, family picnics and reading. I was amazed to see the number of frantic parents and students rushing into Tattered Pages to try and find the “required summer reading” just days before school was to start! When did summer reading become a chore for students? Our the lives of our children really that much busier than ours were? I have always loved the fact that the summer provided more time to read. As a young teen I taught swimming lessons at Thatcher Park at 8am, babysat, hung with friends, helped at home and read. As an older teen I always found time to read as well as hold a full-time job, help with my younger siblings, hang with friends, date and teach dancing lessons. I often was seen pushing my little sister Kelly in a stroller with a book open reading. My Dad referred to me as a “bookworm” an icon I use to this day at the shop. When I was 14, I was confined to bed for 2 weeks during the school year. During my waking hours I read the complete Golden Book Encyclopedia, my Dad‛s World Books of Knowledge and his Hardy Boys books. I became lost in these books…my memories of this illness are softened by the time that I spent reading! At Mercy High we had a minimum of 5 required readings a summer. I never saw those as a “chore” though I often had to adjust my schedule to make the time to read them. I always fit in several other books to read as well. In

my sophomore year I started acting in school plays & found a new interest in reading Broadway plays. We always attended one play a year in NYC and perhaps that personal connection is what drew me to this new reading passion. Required reading in high school, and then college, introduced me to new authors and genres. I discovered my love of sci-fi ~ fantasy while a senior at St. Rose. We convinced one of our favorite professors to let us create a course: Sci-Fi as Literature. It was there that we discovered: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Joseph Heller, C.S. Lewis, George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut and Orson Welles. We discussed the internal struggle of good vs. evil, the role of technology in our lives, society and moral values while discovering these authors. It was my first encounter with my latest favorite genre “dystopian fiction” and “urban fantasy”. It was also during that time that I first discovered the author, Stephen King. “Carrie” his first novel, was unlike anything I had ever read before. I connected to the character, the setting, the cruelty of bullying in high school. As I continued on reading Stephen King, I came to enjoy his modern rock music references, character development, settings in Maine and New England and the ultimate struggle of good vs. evil. Though not always thrilled with the profanity and gore of many of his novels, overall, I am drawn to them. Not unlike the Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, Outer Limits, and Tales from the Darkside; Stephen King still is the top selling author in this genre. Though you might not consider King for your reading choice, for you may think of him as mainly a writer of horror, may I remind you that he wrote: “The Green Mile”, “The Shawshank Redemption”, “The Stand”, “Hearts in Atlantis” and “Stand by Me” (from the short story “The Body”). His next novel, which will be released in early November, is entitled 11/22/63. In this tale of moral quandary and time travel, he sweeps

the reader back to real point and event cemented in time…the assassination of JFK. If you had the power to change such an event would you? What would be the challenges, the dangers? This is definitely one of his books that is in my list of “to read”. In a recent Harris poll, it was found that among those who read fiction, almost half (48%) read mystery, thriller and crime books, while one-quarter read science fiction (26%) and literature (24%). One in five say they read romance novels (21%) and one in ten have read graphic novels (11%) in the past year. Less than one in ten read chick-lit (8%) and western (5%) books, with 36% saying they read other types of fiction of which urban fantasy has become a rising genre. In the non-fiction genre it was found that 31% chose History, 29% Biographies, 26% Religious & Spirituality, 17% Political, 16% Self-Help, 14% Current Affairs, 12% Current Affairs, 10% Business and 29% other non-fiction. There are some small differences by generation in types of books preferred. Echo Boomers (those aged 18-33) are more likely than other generations to read literature (42%) and graphic novels (18%) and urban fantasy (33%). Seniors (those 65 and older) however, are more likely to read mystery, thriller and crime novels (61%), romance (23%) and westerns (9%). There are also some gender differences. Women are more likely than men to read mystery, thrillers and crime novels (57% versus 39%), romance (37%) vs. (3%), chick-lit (12% vs. 4%) and religious books (30% vs. 21%). Men, on the other hand, are more likely to read science fiction (32% vs. 20%), history books (40% vs. 23%), political books (25% vs. 10%), and business books (16% vs. 4%). I have to say that I agree with the statistics Whatever your choice…whatever draws you to what you enjoy to read…it is your personal choice. What influences your choice is as personal as your favorite color and pizza topping. Being a “baby boomer” …

Good health depends on a lot of things, some of which we have no say or control over such as our genetics, and some we do such as whether or not we choose to smoke. But our survival depends on just a handful of basic needs, as listed in the bottom, most basic rung of Maslowâ&#x20AC;&#x203A;s Hierarchy of Needs: air, food, drink, sleep...and shelter. Everyone reading this is aware of the devastation that resulted in ours and neighboring communities caused mostly by floods that accompanied Hurricane Irene last month. Parts of Albany, Schoharie and Greene Counties saw so much damage that individuals and families are now homeless and their future is uncertain as they await assistance from insurance companies, and/or Federal aid. Because I live in Delmar and our home and neighborhood wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x203A;t affected greatly by the floods, itâ&#x20AC;&#x203A;s easy to forget the extent of the devastation others in neighboring communities are dealing with. If you need a reminder, take a drive into one of these communities - just remember to pack some work boots, gloves and a shovel so you can help. There are numerous organizations collecting and distributing aid to communities. Whether you want to donate money, labor or both, start by contacting county or town offices, as well as churches, many of which are organizing work groups. Do an online search for â&#x20AC;&#x153;flood reliefâ&#x20AC;? and the name of the county or town which can give you more up to date instructions. Pages on Facebook have been created to list volunteer and donation opportunities and continue to update their information; do a similar search (flood relief + county or town). As I write this, the following information is online - please call ahead as this information is bound to evolve and change over the weeks and months to come. Regional Farm and Food Project, 518-858-6866 is a member supported, farmer focused non-profit serving the greater Hudson-Mohawk Valley food shed of New York State. They have a fund set up for flood relief and 100% of the proceeds will be dispersed to farmers in the Greater Capital Region affected by Hurricane Irene to provide financial relief for lost sales, livestock, damaged infrastructure, and other financial burdens incurred by farmers as a result of the storm. Donations to assist flood victims can be mailed to: Schoharie County Community Action Program (SCCAP) 795 East Main Street, Suite 5, Cobleskill, NY 12043. (Please put â&#x20AC;&#x153;Flood Reliefâ&#x20AC;? on the checkâ&#x20AC;&#x203A;s memo line. (SCCAP is not affiliated with SVW) Schoharie County Emergency Management Contact numbers: 518-337-4093, 518-337-4094, 518-337-4095 Lexington (Greene County) was especially hard hit as was Prattsville. An account has been set up and donations can be dropped off at the Tannersville Branch of Greene County Savings Bank or send to the address below. Make checks out to: Town of Lexington Irene Disaster Donations; send checks to: Bank of Greene County Donation Fund, PO BOX 470, Catskill, NY 12413. The Town of New Baltimore fire station, at 77 Gill Road, will be accepting cleaning supplies, rubber gloves, work gloves, trash bags, shovels. Again, this is a just partial list from outlying areas- please contact town offices, churches and civic organizations for more information and an update re: their needs!
