education. Eighth Graders experience a “moving up ceremony to usher in their High School years. High School Seniors participate in one of the most memorable graduations, as most see this transition as a right of passage into adulthood. Then of course, there is a College graduation with an entrance into the work force. Life is a series of graduations from one experience to the next. We grow and develop our own gifts and talents, gradually completing the person we are meant to be.
young graduates, whether eighth grade or college, to appreciate the seniors in their lives. Realize how much they love you—that’s why they tell you to stand up straight and follow your dreams. They want you to be as respectful of them as they are proud of you. Tap their knowledge, experience and wisdom. What they have survived is amazing and thought provoking. They have graduated much. If you don’t have any seniors in your life locally, then an invitation stands. You are welcome at Delmar Place to volunteer your time and graduate to a higher level of understanding, knowledge, and compassion. It may be the most meaningful graduation you’ll ever participate in.
The question to ask—“Do graduations ever end? In my opinion, the answer is “No. Throughout life we continue to grow, change and learn from new experiences. We graduate as a couple if we marry, and become parents if children are born. Each step brings new challenges, Submitted by Kristin Vivian, Director of Community Outreach discoveries and joys giving further meaning to life. at Delmar Place Assisted Living Community, 467 Delaware Avenue, Delmar NY 12054. One misconception is that as we age our lives are somehow less meaningful or valuable. This could not be further from the truth. Rabbi Harold Kushner, in his book Conquering Fear: Living Boldly in an Uncertain World, states “We do ourselves and others a disservice when we make old age something to be feared. Life is not a resource to be used up, so that the older we get, the less life we have left. Life is the accumulation of wisdom, love and experience of people encountered and obstacles overcome. The longer we live, the more life we possess. What a wonderful view and attitude for life! Each day I have the privilege of being surrounded by seniors who continue to remind me of the joys in life.

Important information for contact lens wearers: ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses are available by prescription only. An eye care professional will determine whether contact lenses are right for you. Although rare, serious eye problems can develop while wearing contact lenses. To help avoid these problems, follow the wear and replacement schedule and the lens care instructions provided by your doctor. Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection, or experience eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes, redness or other eye problems. If one of these conditions occurs, contact your eye doctor immediately. For more information on proper wear, care and safety, talk to your eye care professional and ask for a Patient Instruction Guide, call 1-800-843-2020 or visit acuvue.com. ‡ Helps protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye. WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed. NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV-blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders. BETHLEHEM CEMETERY Where memories live on forever. Q. Describe your business and how you got started.
A. The Bethlehem Cemetery was incorporated in 1865. We have just under 30 acres of very special burial grounds. We serve our families year-round, six days a week. It is our goal to maintain the cemetery grounds as what they are, a sacred place for memorialization and remembrance, a place of reverence and respect. Many people think the Bethlehem Cemetery is Town-operated, but it is owned by a not-for-profit cemetery corporation, is non-denominational and managed by an all volunteer board of directors who work tirelessly to keep it running smoothly. Another myth is that the Bethlehem Cemetery is completely filled and has no more lots available – we have burial spaces available from cremation-sized to large family lots and are looking at placing a columbarium for our families who wish above-ground cremation burials. Many people confuse us with the Bethlehem Rural Cemetery, so a typical question is where are you located? We are at the intersection of Kenwood and Elsmere Avenues! Another confusing thing for people is how very separate cemeteries are from funeral homes. Cemeteries are non-profit organizations and funeral homes are not; cemeteries are businesses, but they are businesses that are forever. The biggest misconception is that people think they own land in the cemetery. What you purchase from the cemetery is the right to be buried on a specific lot within the cemetery grounds. This is not land ownership and so you do not have the same property rights as you do when you purchase a parcel of land. Your rights include burial and memorialization but those are within the guidelines set by the cemetery you purchased the burial right from. That is why you cannot plant trees, have certain decorative items and that only a certain number of burials and memorial stones can be placed on the lot based on its size.
Q. Are you known for anything special?
A. I would have to say we are known for the outstanding care we give to our cemetery families. We offer 24 hour/7 day a week service to our families and our personal service, by our superintendent, John Pangburn, our administrator, Valerie Newell and a dedicated volunteer board is probably our strongest point. The Bethlehem Cemetery, unlike many other smaller cemeteries, offers a funeral celebrant service for those families who are spiritual but may not be religious in the traditional sense. We try to be there for families who may have no connection with an area house of worship but want a meaningful committal service. This is very unique in this area. Another thing that makes the Bethlehem Cemetery different is that we begin new programs almost annually. In 2010, we are moving toward a preneed educational program for families and individuals, and those who take advantage of this education will be given a discount on their burial rights. It is our hope to perform significant community outreach about the advantage of planning and to take some of the fear out of thinking about end-of-life activities. In the past, presentations have been given to private groups and churches, but our hope is to help people help their families by giving information and letting people just ask questions. In 2011, we are moving toward a new section dedicated to veterans and civil citizens, where burial rights will be donated for those who serve their Country and community so honorably, while our focus for this year is to establish a new section in the cemetery which will contain a cremation garden and possibly a columbarium (which is an above-ground burial option for families who chose cremation).
Q. How does your business give back to our community?
A. It is a goal of our board of directors to educate the Bethlehem community about cemeteries – why they are special and different from any other place. Cemeteries are fascinating, not just the Bethlehem Cemetery, but all of them. They are so much a part of a community – both the present and the past. We have many historic families within the Bethlehem Cemetery gates, and if you are a history buff or not, you cannot walk our grounds without realizing you know so many of the family names and of course individuals who have passed. The Bethlehem Cemetery is a proud member of the NYS Association of Cemeteries and that has been a contribution to making our cemetery operate efficiently with New York State laws, but also effectively by supporting us with management ideas and best practices to serve the community. In a visual sense, we are very proud of the lovely grounds we steward. We are also a member of the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce, and offer chamber members opportunities for educational presentations and member-to-member cost savings. Over the last two years, we have created a Holiday Memory Tree with a donation from the Glenmont Hewitt’s. The tree is adorned with environmentally friendly ornaments that feed wildlife in the cemetery – popcorn balls, apples with seed and peanut butter, cranberry strings and tags that say who the ornament is placed in memory of. There are also ice luminaries created by the Caps N Chaps 4H group. These are lit Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to remind our cemetery families that they are cared for and remembered over the holidays. An American Flag and memorial garden was dedicated in honor and memory of Robert A. Jackson, a Marine Corps veteran, community leader and long-time Bethlehem Cemetery Board member. This garden is maintained by the volunteer efforts of Pangburn Landscaping with flowers provided by Verstandig’s. Our most recent project has been the Bethlehem Cemetery Children’s Garden which has been overseen by Merelyn Stewart of our board. Merelyn has worked with some of our local businesses, the Slingerlands Elementary School, the Caps N Chaps 4H group and Bethlehem Youth Court to create this planted memorial to the children who are in our cemetery

CAR CARE TIPS Check Your Cool Quotient With a Cooling System Quiz
Cooling system neglect is cited as a principal reason for mechanical failure of a vehicle. In addition to the danger and inconvenience of a breakdown, the damage to the engine and transmission can add up to thousands of dollars. Discovering a leaking radiator, hose connection, a sticking thermostat or other cooling system component that’s on “borrowed time” can save the life of one’s engine. To underscore the importance of proper care of the cooling system, the Council offers this multiple- choice quiz: Cooling system quiz 1. For maximum freeze protection antifreeze mixture should be: a. half anti-freeze and half water; b. pure antifreeze; c. 70% anti-freeze, 30% water. 2. In the cooling system the thermostat: a. controls engine temperature; b. works the air conditioner; c modulates the diodes. 3. A radiator cap is designed to: a. keep water from sloshing out of the radiator; b. keep the cooling system operating at a specified pressure; c. last indefinitely. 4. A broken drive belt can cause: a. overheating; b. loss of power steering; c. dead battery. 5. Cooling systems on many cars today: a. have no water pump; b. never need to be flushed; c. are equipped with an electric fan on the radiator.
• Written lifetime warranty on all collision repairs! • Original equiptment replacement parts routinely used. • A.S.E. certified technicians • Extensive Insurance claim experience We handle the details for you. • FREE Pickup and Delivery of your vehicle in the Bethlehem area.
Answers to Cooling System Quiz: 1. (C) is correct, although a 50/50 solution is adequate for most climates, protecting to -34o F. Never use pure antifreeze. 2. (A) is correct. As stated above, a faulty thermostat, causing an engine to run too hot or too cold, can damage the engine. 3. (B) is correct. And when replacing the cap, be sure to install the right one for your vehicle. Pressure recommendations vary. 4. Because all three functions are dependent upon the drive belt (or belts) all three answers are correct. 5. (C) is correct.

Letter from our Town Supervisor Sam Messina In the May Our Towne, I described progress that was being made on key issues for Bethlehem and some challenges our Town, and any local government, has in areas of Fiscal Responsibility, Quality of Life and Excellence in Government. I am pleased to report that during this last month we have continued to move forward to make progress in these three important areas. Financial Responsibility: As promised, we conducted our Town’s first Business Forum with the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce to raise and address issues of importance to current and new businesses in Bethlehem. More than sixty people attended this meeting at Town Hall, and a number of ideas were generated that warrant further consideration. You will all be advised of our next quarterly meeting where we will report on results, discuss and advance other ideas and, of course, everyone is welcome. The Town Board took action to authorize bond financing for required highway paving, the purchase of three necessary replacement vehicles for our police department and replacement equipment for our sewer and water divisions. I recognize that some folks may feel that this expenditure of funds may not demonstrate “financial responsibility”. I respectfully disagree, because: 1) These expenditures are absolutely necessary for our Town, and to avoid them would incur greater costs and severe service problems down the road, and 2) Bonding is the preferred and least cost method of funding, as compared to expending funds out of current operation funds, and is consistent with practices recommended by the NYS Office of State Comptroller and the NYS Association of Towns. Like any property owner, the Town must maintain its investments in buildings, infrastructure and vehicles in order to protect the value of its resources and continue expected levels of service. Quality of Life: Work will begin to install sidewalks on Orchard Street, between Cherry Avenue and Crestwood Lane. Neighbors have been advised that the project will be accomplished during the 2010 summer construction season. This project is funded in large part by a Safe Routes to School Program grant and will provide a safer pathway for kids walking to Slingerlands School and other pedestrians in the area. Excellence in Government: This principle has been moved forward by two program initiatives. Bethlehem’s first Community Meeting Around Town was held on Monday, May 24th at Selkirk Fire House No. 1. Presentations were made by our Police, Seniors, Economic Development and Planning and Engineering Department’s to keep people abreast of important matters and services that will have an impact in their lives and in their communities. Then, and very importantly, for most of the meeting, Town Board members and Town staff listened to people, and responded as appropriate. These informal sessions are all

about strengthening our ties as a community and learning from each other so that your Town government can best serve you. Our next Community Meeting Around Town will be held in North Bethlehem and you will be advised of the date, place and time. We hope as many people as possible will attend, because your government serves you best when you participate. Implementing a promise I had made to the residents of Bethlehem, with the support of Town staff, we will implement a program to: enable residents to have access to live and recorded Town Board Meetings at their personal computer; go to specific parts of the meeting video they are interested in; we have expanded the working of hard copy and electronic agendas, and; will soon implement a process to permit appropriate public access to electronic agenda attachments. We have already expanded agenda descriptions, and the other advancements will take about 6-8 weeks to complete. The important thing is that our Town has taken clear and very cost-effective steps to bring our government to the people. Along with these concrete examples of progress I want you to know that we have given serious attention to other programs that will have a tremendous impact on Bethlehem’s future: • I have presented the Town Board with a plan to drive forward on a commitment to implement the excellent work of the 20/20 Committee in the areas of economic development, economy and efficiency in Bethlehem Town Government and sharing and cooperation among taxing jurisdictions. Many of the business, government, education and not-for-profit leaders who helped to develop the 20/20 Report have agreed to assist us in implementation. Now we have to refine our work and get moving. • New initiatives have been advanced to ramp up tax abating economic development in our Town, consistent with the vision of our Comprehensive Plan. For instance, the Bethlehem Industrial Development Agency (BIDA) and our Town economic development staff will be engaging to see how we can get a jump on an economic development market that may heat up due to an economic recovery that may be occurring, and from spin off from GLOBALFOUNDRIES at Luther Forest. We will be linking this work with the 20/20 initiative that is described above with particular focus on the Slingerlands Vista Technology Park area, and in the Selkirk Rail Yard area. Two other critical matters that I wanted to briefly discuss with you are the 2011 Budget and Bethlehem’s Capital Programming needs. Regarding the Budget, we will begin our internal work sessions 6 weeks earlier this year in order to have more time for intensive and comprehensive discussions about opportunities to save money, and expend prudently, where needed, while maintaining the quality of life in Bethlehem. I assure you that Bethlehem is facing the fiscal challenges that you have read about at all levels of government. My job, working with our staff, will be to put together a budget that reflects our current fiscal realities and everyone’s desire to retain Bethlehem’s high quality of life.

“I dunno dad.” He smiled and suggested I put the cans in the shallow end of the cool running water. “Great idea Dad!”
Mary Rea MY DAD, THE ORIGINAL BEN MATLOCK
Mary Rea
“I guess some dads have never been known for being able to put their feelings into words………. but I’d like to tell you in my own way that I love you and I’m proud that you are my daughter…………. Happy Birthday!” The above inscription was inside a card my father gave me many years ago. I keep the card on my desk as a reminder of how much he loved me. He passed away on September 5th 1998 at the age of 75. It’s a rare day when I do not think of him. My father was the stereotypical dad of the 50’s and 60’s. He went to work each day to support his family and left “running the home” (there were 8 of us kids!) to my mom. While he was a kind and caring type, a la Ward Cleaver, he also had some John Wayne characteristics which included firm “house rules”. First, we always had to show respect to our parents and other adults. Secondly, we should always tell the truth (not always so easy for me!). He taught us the importance of how hard work will “pay off”. For 38 years, my dad practiced law in Saugerties, New York. He hung his shingle off a building on Main Street. Looking back, I think he was the original Ben Matlock, the character Andy Griffith portrayed in the 80’s /90’s TV series, “Matlock”. My father was as sharp as a tack with unsurpassed wit and a wonderful sense of humor. He was always considered a “peoples’ lawyer”. My dad was there for the person without any chances left – a champion of the underdog! He taught me the importance of never judging a person until I’d walked in their shoes. At times he took on cases that colleagues cautioned him to avoid. He’d respond, “Someone has to help the guy!” My father was a sensitive man and he had the ability to “get inside” a person’s mind and understand their situations involving the law. Sometimes, I would go to Family Court with my dad on Wednesday nights. Maybe he saw a potential lawyer in the family! I’d bring my coloring book and crayons. I particularly enjoyed this time because Judge Mills always had a big bag of lollipops in the lower right hand drawer of his bench. He would share them with any children appearing in court and also allowed me to have one. I always picked cherry but if there weren’t any left, orange tasted great too! As a little girl, I remember playing on our back yard swing set. When I saw my dad walking up our driveway after a day at work, I’d smile and wave. I’d then jump off the swing, run over and give him a hug and kiss. The most important man in my life was home! I also remember sitting at the kitchen table while he tied my shoe laces for me – double knots of course! I recall spending Sunday afternoons at Blue Mountain Reservoir fishing with him and my brothers. In spite of my brothers’ protests, dad always put the worm on the hook for me! My job was to carry the soda cans mom had packed for us. I remember dad asking me, “Mary how are we going to keep the soda cold?” I replied,
During my young adult life, my father was there to help me through some difficult times. He offered his advice and words of encouragement. Sometimes he helped me using his wit and sense of humor as a “tension buster”. I have fond memories of us bantering back and forth on our back porch, serious discussions often mixed with laughter. My dad was not afraid to say he’d made mistakes in life. His advice to me was to try and avoid the same errors. Whenever I needed someone to talk to, to trust in, or to laugh with, I could look to my dad. Although he has passed on, I will still celebrate Father’s Day on June 20th . I will sit on my porch and create a beautiful memory of the two of us talking and laughing about “things in life”. Even though we did share a lot, I miss what could have been - for instance, his being able to watch his grandchildren grow up and all the good advice he could have offered them. In his final years, Dad struggle with Alzheimer’s. It was so hard to see this once smart, clear minded man slowly lose his capabilities. I longed for our father daughter conversations. I wished I was there with him when he passed on so I could have held his hand like he did mine so many times. As it is for many people of his generation, saying the “L” word was difficult for my dad. Even though he seldom said it, I did feel loved. Truth be known, I could have said it more often to him. Given the opportunity, I bet he would tell me this was a mistake he made and one that I should learn from. Thanks dad, I will…………….beginning with more often saying to my own children, “I love you”. This Father’s Day, I’ve made a promise to myself. I’m going to listen to my I-pod playing the song “In the Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics and dedicate it to my Dad. Happy Father’s Day to all Dads! Talk to you soon.

A: Vacation is just around the corner, but before your family departs, consider a few things to prepare your pets for your trip. Whether you are planning on traveling with your pets or having them kenneled, plan ahead to make sure your pet will be taken care of during your trip. There are many options available for your pet: traveling with the family, staying with a friend, boarding at a kennel or cattery, or hiring the services of a petsitter. Here are a few things to take into account for each option: Taking your pet with you: • If you can’t bear to leave your dog or cat behind, check for pet friendly hotels. Be realistic about the amount of time you will be able to spend with your pet. If you are away from your pet over 50% of the day, it may be best to leave your pet at home. • If you will be taking flight for your travel plans, carefully consider how the trip will affect your pet. Air travel can be very stressful for pets. • Check with your vet to make sure that there are no special animal health requirements for traveling to your destination.
Important items to leave with your pet’s caretaker: • A letter of authorization for the caretaker and the most recent vet record so that they can seek veterinary treatment if your pet becomes ill. • The phone numbers and locations of your veterinarian and a nearby emergency clinic. • Your personal contact information or hotel and flight information in the event of an emergency. Although it may seem time-consuming to make these arrangements prior to your vacation, knowing your pet is safe and properly taken care of will give you peace of mind during your escape. Boarding at a Kennel or Cattery: • If you are unable to travel with your pet or make arrangements with a friend, a boarding facility may be an alternative. Do Real DAD’s Wear Gowns?
ASK
THE
Submitted By: Four Corners Pharmacy By Aaron Skipper, Pharm.D. Jennifer Cerulli, Pharm.D, Pharmacist, Four Corners Pharmacy & Associate Professor ACPHS
Hospital gowns that is…. As our society continues to advance, grow and develop, our health seems to have been put on hold. People are exercising less and eating more fast food. As summer weather arrives, men’s interests turn to outside chores and their favorite baseball teams rather than to their medical team. The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ http://www.ahrq.gov/realmen/ ) states that men are 25 percent less likely than women to have visited a doctor in the past year, yet men are 1.5 times more likely than women to die from heart disease, cancer, and lung diseases. So AHRQ is encouraging “real men” to get to their doctor and into an examination gown for a physical with their campaign “real men wear gowns.” Father’s day is a great time to ensure dad’s of all ages live longer and healthier.
First things first … Does Dad have a primary care physician?
Men of all ages should have a doctor that they see regularly for check-ups and physicals. Don’t wait until you have to go to the emergency room for an antibiotic. A visit to your own doctor is often less expensive, is faster and may be more effective than the emergency room as your doctor has your chart and knows your medical history. Be sure to notify them of any medication or food allergies and past medical conditions. Keep your doctors name and number handy in case of an emergency.
At what age do health screenings for men become important? Diseases are easiest to treat when caught early. Talk to your doctor about what preventative medical tests you need in order to stay healthy. Many tests are painless or involve simple blood work. Some start as early as age 20, so its never too soon to ask. Screenings include • Body mass index (BMI, a measure of your height and weight) • Blood pressure • Cholesterol • Diabetes • Colorectal cancer • Prostate Screening
Do you know what your blood pressure currently is?
Men of all ages should get their blood pressure checked at least once a year. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or kidney failure all of which can be fatal. High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because it has no symptoms.
When should I start checking my cholesterol levels?
Men should have their cholesterol tested once every 5 years starting at age 20 and then once every year after they reach 45 years old. “Good” cholesterol or high density lipoprotein (HDL) carries cholesterol through the body and can prevent disease if at a high level such as above 40 mg/dL. “Bad” cholesterol or low density lipoprotein (LDL) can build up on the inner walls
30
of arteries that feed blood and oxygen to the brain and heart. Together with other substances, this can form plaque leading to atherosclerosis. LDL should be maintained below 100 mg/ dL. Triglycerides are a third form of cholesterol that can be elevated from inactivity, smoking, high carbohydrate diet, and from being overweight. Together these cholesterol levels can be used to evaluate your risk for heart disease.
What are the signs of diabetes?
Diabetes can affect just about every organ in the body. With out proper treatment diabetes can lead to heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage. Yet with diet, exercise and medication, the disease can be well controlled. The American Diabetes Association recommends screening for diabetes every 3 years beginning at age 45. Your doctor may choose to screen you earlier if you have other risk factors for diabetes (family history, overweight or high blood pressure) or if you have symptoms of diabetes such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, or blurry vision.
Prostate screening PSA blood test.
This tests how your prostate is doing. Levels rise when there is an abnormality such as infection, enlargement, or cancer. Starting at the age of 50 men should get this tested every year. African American men or men with a family history may get tested earlier by their doctor.
Keeping up with vaccinations… When was your last tetanus shot?
As you work outside to get the lawn and yard trimmed up or make home improvements, cuts and injuries can increase the risk for tetanus. Tetanus boosters should be given every 10 years. Also talk with your doctor about yearly flu shots or if a pneumonia shot if recommended for your age and/or medical conditions.
Worried when you see a 70 year old man hiking up a mountain faster and in better shape than you? Well, yes prevention is the key, but its never to late to take control of your health and you already know what to do: eat healthy well balanced meals, drink plenty of water throughout the day (at least 2 liters a day), quit smoking and get physical activity on a daily basis (or as often as time permits). Enjoy your hobbies like fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking, running, or working on your yard. You only have one body - so keep it healthy for as long as possible for you and your family. For more information talk with your doctor, your Four Corners Pharmacist and visit these websites.

Closely aligned with this matter is work that is going on now at Town Hall to assess our capital needs for our water, sewer and facility infrastructure, and to make decisions on how to proceed. This is a critical matter to bring to your attention because the cost implications are significant and, unfortunately, delay only results in higher costs. Governments generally have not been keen to engage in a dialogue on these matters because the plain and simple truth is that deteriorating water and sewer systems are not visible and there is some tendency to put things off, or only repair and replace when there is a problem or emergency. Well, they have been put off too long and in Bethlehem we can and we must do better than that. So, stay tuned and you will be hearing much more about this in the near future. And that leads me to the Bethlehem Town Government Program that we will highlight this month to offer some information to Bethlehem’s residents and businesspersons about our excellent departments. Considering our upcoming priority work on our capital needs, I have asked our Commissioner of Public Works, Josh Cansler to provide an overview of his department.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for purifying and distributing safe drinking water to the residents of Bethlehem; collection and treatment of wastewater, engineering and technical support, and administrative services.
Where in Bethlehem???
This float was part of our town Memorial Day parade in 1916. These Bethlehem residents used the float to encourage neighbors to join the Red Cross, as the need was great due to WW I. Memorial Day was first established when the graves of Civil War casualties were decorated in 1868. . After WW I it was decided to commemorate all those all died in service to the country. Old timers will remember it as “Decoration Day”. Submitted by the Bethlehem Historical Association
Our staff operates two water treatment plants, maintain a reservoir, eight water storage tanks, 14 wells, two interconnections with the Albany water pipeline, seven pressure regulating stations, and 190 miles of water system pipeline. That’s just to get water into your homes and businesses. On the wastewater side we operate a wastewater treatment plant, 38 pump/lift stations, and 160 miles of sewer collection pipeline. We also have an Engineering staff which provides planning, design, and quality assurance for projects for all Town departments. They also provide engineering support and technical review for future development projects within the Town. Our engineering staff is also responsible for enforcing stormwater laws and regulations. Our Administrative and Customer Services staff operates the customer Call Center for Town Hall and handles all billing services, appointments, and related issues. Sincerely,
Sam Messina Bethlehem Police Department

June 1-7 is CPR Week
HEART STRONG
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of CPR all month long In a sudden cardiac arrest, seconds count. Often, a victim’s survival depends on quick action by the people around them. The American Heart Association wants to help save more lives by educating 1 million people about sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of CPR training in honor of CPR Week, which is in June. The American Heart Association has created a website that will track, real-time, CPR training around the country, videos watched and games played. Imagine the impact 1 million people who know the simple steps to save a life can have on their communities and the lives of loved ones. WHAT’S NEW? Watch and Play. This year www.cprweek.org will include the HandsOnly CPR demonstration video and “Be the Bea,” a Guitar Hero-style game that will teach people the correct rate of compressions (100 bpm) as they learn the beat to music! Teens! We think teens are the next generation of lifesavers and hope the game and video options on the site entice them to learn about this important issue. WHAT WE WANT THE PUBLIC TO DO Get trained! Visit www.americanheart.org/eccclassconnector to find a class or instructor near you. Make your training count. Upload training to the training map on www. cprweek.org to help us reach our goal! We encourage everyone to log their training into the site each time they get trained or train someone else. Watching the Hands-Only CPR demonstration video and playing the “Be the Beat” game held on the site will automatically count toward the goal. Spread the word. Incorporate messaging into newsletters, emails, web pages and other communications vehicles. GET SOCIAL. • Update your Facebook status with National CPR & AED Awreness Week messaging • Become a “Fan” of Mini Anne on Facebook • Follow Mini Anne on Twitter. “Tweet” about the week: – “Today is National CPR & AED Awareness Week – get trained in CPR and encourage loved ones to get trained!” – “Visit www.cprweek.org and check out how many people near you are getting trained in CPR!”
One Patient.
Download the Hands-Only TM CPR APP. for the iPhone and Android phone WHY • The American Heart Association wants to save more lives by helping educate 1 million people about sudden cardiac arrest and the need for CPR training in honor of CPR Week June 1-7. Do your part to help -- get trained, watch or play, and share the message. • The more you practice CPR, the more automatic the skill will become – that way, if you are faced with an emergency, you will feel confident and know what to do. • Training or retraining should be a habit. CPR Week is an annual reminder to make sure you are prepared. You make time to get your oil changed, get an annual exam and change the batteries on your home fire alarms. Make time to learn CPR or update your skills so you can protect yourself and your family. • Training has never been easier. The American Heart Association offers several ways to get trained. You can take a traditional course in a classroom with an instructor or use our self-directed course, CPR Anytime. The bilingual kit teaches the core skills of CPR in 22 minutes with a DVD and personal manikin that can be used to refresh skills later. • For more information or to find a CPR class near you, call 877.AHA4CPR or visit www.americanheart.org/ECCclassconnector • Go to www.cprweek.org to find training, log your training, play Be the Beat and watch the Hands-Only CPR video. Trish’s Pix from Tattered Pages Used Books
Greetings Fellow Readers… “The cat’s out of the bag…”, well, at least Morris our 17th fostercat, is pictured here coming out of a customer’s bag of books brought in for trade credits! As many of you know, Tattered Pages Used Books is more than just the best little used bookstore in the Capital District it is a place where customers, both children andadults, come to visit with our latest foster cat from Animalovers or with my adorable “greeter dog” Riley. Riley comes to work with me Weekdays and our foster cat lives right in the store. These cats are up for adoption and looking for their forever home while living in the bookstore. We have found homes for 17 cats since June 2007. There is something about a bookstore and cats…they just seem to go together. I have loved this experience of fostering and have had a wonderful time matching them up with their new families. We have all of our cats featured in our photo gallery on our website: www.tatteredpages365.webs.com and on a bulletin board in our store. If looking for a cat or dog, check out www.animalovers. org. Our cats, and my darling dog, are often the springboard for many conversations here in the store. Morris really does remind me of “Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World” by Spencer, Iowa librarian Vicki Myron. (check out Dewey Readmore Books on you tube to see the real Dewey). Mischievous, proud, loving and social, our Morris, is the type of cat that books are written about. They also have reminded me of the popularity of many animal based books that have been best sellers in the past year. Besides Dewey, other popular cat books I suggest are: “Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat” by David Dosa. This is the famed nursing home cat’s story. “Catwatching” by Desmond Morris, “Zen Cats” by Yoshiyuki Yaginuma , and of course, mystery writers Lillian Jackson Braun and Rita Mae Browne who feature cats in their famous mystery series. For dog lovers might I suggest: “Marley and Me” by John Grogan (and subsequent Marley books for children) , “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein, Dean Koontz’s “Darkest Evening of the Year” & “Watchers” & “The Tale of Edgar Sawtelle” by David Wroblewski. Cat and dog chapter book suggestions for children: Animal Ark Books, “Shiloh” series by Phyllis Naylor, McGrowl books by Bob Balaban, “Because of Winn Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo, “Stone Fox” by John Reynolds Gardiner and y “Socks” byy Beverlyy Cleary.
Tattered Pages Used Books
Just a reminder…now that it is gardening season…that we have a wonderful array of gardening books in our store as well as birding books. Next to the gardening books is our cookbook section with some incredible vegetarian books as well as grilling/ barbecue books. I love sitting down and browsing through cookbooks. I have found some delicious and easy recipes for crockpot cooking this year in the store. I recently talked to a woman who is attempting to incorporate more vegetables and fruits into her diet this summer. She spent thirty minutes pouring over our cookbook section before selecting one stir fry and one grilling book for her new culinary experiences. We have over 100 cookbooks here at Tattered Pages with authors: Julia Child, Rachel Ray, Emeril, Paul Prudhomme, William-Sonoma and Jeff Smith among them. Some books that recently came into our store that I thought that I might bring to your attention are the following: Award winning author/pastor: Max Lucado books…hardcover and paperback. This inspirational writer has over 60 adult and children books to his name. We have several of his books recently added to our inventory. Political Science books by authors, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Michael Lewis, Lou Dobbs, Jerome Corsi and Michael Savage. We recently took in several new books on the Civil War and WWII as well as historical biographies. With summer, comes vacation, the beach or poolside selections to read. Why not check out Jane Green, Elin Hilderbrand, Emily Giffen, Nicholas Sparks, Nora Roberts, Jodi Picoult, or Fern Michaels for those “beach reads”? If your child has a summer reading list… come in and meet with me for assistance in filling that need. I still work parttime as an elementary school level educator and would love to match your child up with just the right book for summer reading. I recently spoke to my niece Sarah’s third grade class at Holy Spirit School in East Greenbush and brought books. They loved the Animal Ark, Pony Pals, Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary, Paula Danziger, Dan Gutman, Magic Treehouse and Bailey School Kids books from the selection I brought. Don’t forget that we have a large “classic literature” section as well, for your high school student. Whatever your choice…may you find some time for a good book, whether it mystery, history or just some good “snack” reading…enjoy the journey as you get lost in a good book! Until next month… Patricia Eldridge is Manager of Tattered Pages Used Books in Glenmont

Health Matters It’s a conundrum that we live in a region where our summers are short and daylight not always plentiful, yet we can still develop skin cancer and thus need to be vigilant about protecting ourselves. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) states that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with over one million new cases diagnosed each year, outnumbering all other cancers combined. Skin cancer affects people of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions. The two most common types of skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas and both are highly curable. The third most common, melanoma, is more dangerous, especially to young people. When melanoma occurs in those with dark skin tones, it’s more likely to occur in areas not normally considered to be sun-exposed. A cancerous skin lesion can appear suddenly or develop slowly. Its appearance depends on the type of cancer. Risk factors for non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers include: ~unprotected and/or excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation ~fair complexion ~occupational exposures to coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, or radium ~family history ~multiple or atypical moles ~severe sunburns as a child
swimming, toweling dry, or perspiring. ~Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days. ~Slap on a hat: Cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat, shading your face, ears, and neck. If you choose a baseball cap, remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen. ~Wrap on sunglasses: Wear sunglasses with 99% to 100% UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin. ~Avoid other sources of UV light. Tanning beds and sun lamps are dangerous because they can damage your skin. Signs and symptoms of skin cancer: If you have any of the following symptoms, tell your doctor. -any change on the skin, especially in the size or color of a mole or other darkly pigmented growth or spot, or a new growth -scaliness, oozing, bleeding, or change in the appearance of a bump or nodule -the spread of pigmentation beyond its border such as dark coloring that spreads past the edge of a mole or mark -a change in sensation, itchiness, tenderness, or pain
Can skin cancer be prevented? The best ways to lower the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer are to avoid intense sunlight for long periods of time and to practice sun safety. You can continue to exercise and enjoy the outdoors while practicing sun safety at the same time. Here are some ways you can do this: ~Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ~Seek shade: Look for shade, especially in the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. Practice the shadow rule and teach it to children. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest. ~Slip on a shirt: Cover up with protective clothing to guard as much skin as possible when you are out in the sun. Choose comfortable clothes made of tightly woven fabrics that you cannot see through when held up to a light. ~Slop on sunscreen: Use sunscreen and lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen (about a palmful) and reapply after

Smart Investment Moves for Newlyweds June is a popular month for weddings. If you’re getting married this month, you’ve got a lot on your mind, but after the honeymoon is over, it’s time to start thinking of the key activities of building a life together — one of which is creating a long-term investment strategy. To build such a strategy, you and your spouse will need to take several steps. Here are some of the most important ones: Identify your goals. People can enter marriage at different stages of life. But whether you’re a young newlywed or a baby boomer entering a second marriage, both you and your spouse will have a set of goals you want to achieve, such as saving for a down payment on a home, saving for college for your children, building resources for a comfortable retirement, purchasing a vacation home, supporting charitable organizations and so on. It’s important that, as a couple, you identify those financial goals that are most important to you.
quickly go into debt or be forced to dip into a long-term investment if you have to meet an unexpected, and unexpectedly large, expense, such as a major car repair, a new appliance or a medical bill. Get some help. If you can make the right investmentrelated moves right from the beginning of your marriage, you’ll almost certainly make your lives easier. But investing can be complicated, so you and your spouse could well benefit from getting assistance from a professional financial advisor — someone who can help you create and maintain an investment portfolio that’s appropriate for your specific goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. By making the right investment moves, right from the start of your marriage, you and your spouse may be giving yourselves a “wedding gift” that may benefit you for years to come. So plan your moves carefully — and enjoy your lives together.
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, its employees and Financial Advisors do not offer tax or legal advice.
List your debts and assets. Generally speaking, the fewer “surprises” you and your spouse bring to a marriage, in terms of financial issues, the better. If you haven’t already done so, put your debts and assets “on the table” so you’re both aware of what you owe and what you own. This knowledge will be invaluable when you begin making the investment moves necessary to achieve your goals. Discuss your investment styles. You and your spouse no doubt share many traits, but you will also have some differences — and one of those differences may be in your investment styles and preferences. For example, you may be an aggressive investor, while your spouse might be more conservative. What you choose to do with those differences is up to you. You could, for example, arrive at some common ground between your two styles and use that approach in your joint investment accounts. Then, for your individual accounts, such as your IRA or 401(k), you and your spouse can follow your individual investment styles.

Art at the Arboretum Pein Air (Open Air) events to be held on June 5th and June 11th, July 17th and July 18th.
Pine Hollow Arboretum on Maple Avenue Slingerlands 12159.

The event will host the two days for artists to come and bring their easels, paints, pen and inks, brushes and cameras to capture a sight forever by producing a piece of art. It is hope that artists will then frame the piece of art and bring it to the Arboretum on July 17th between 10 AM and 12 noon for hanging and then to celebrate and award the artists with a "People's Choice" award on July 18th at a 4PM -6 PM reception. The intent for the event is to celebrate art, nature and the human pursuit of adventure. The Arboretum is 25 acres with over 2500 species of trees which have managed to thrive in a habitat managed naturally. The pristine site is of value because it contributes to our community's native habitat, and also provide a respite from the nearby busy highway which circles our community. "Our Town" has managed to maintain it historical atmosphere and it is in the place that nature prevails.

•inline skating •bike riding Exercise Makes You Flexible Can you touch your toes easily without yelling ouch? Most kids are pretty flexible, which means that they can bend and stretch their bodies without much trouble. This kind of exercise often feels really good, like when you take a big stretch in the morning after waking up. Being flexible is having “full range of motion,” which means you can move your arms and legs freely without feeling tightness or pain. It’s easy to find things to do for good flexibility: •tumbling and gymnastics •yoga •dancing, especially ballet •martial arts •simple stretches, such as touching your toes or side stretches Exercise Keeps the Balance Food gives your body fuel in the form of calories, which are a kind of energy. Your body needs a certain amount of calories every day just to function, breathe, walk around, and do all the basic stuff. But if you’re active,
your body needs an extra measure of calories or energy. If you’re not very active, your body won’t need as many calories. Whatever your calorie need is, if you eat enough to meet that need, your body weight will stay about the same. If you eat more calories than your body needs, it may be stored as excess fat. Exercise Makes You Feel Good It feels good to have a strong, flexible body that can do all the activities you enjoy — like running, jumping, and playing with your friends. It’s also fun to be good at something, like scoring a basket, hitting a home run, or perfecting a dive. But you may not know that exercising can actually put you in a better mood. When you exercise, your brain releases a chemical called endorphins (say: en-dorfunz), which may make you feel happier. It’s just another reason why exercise is cool! kidshealth.org Submitted by Dewey’s
