ACTIVITIES - Exclusive importation and distribution of Amazonian plants as food supplements, organic spices from Sri Lanka, combinations of these plants as food supplements and cosmetics. - Branch offices in Sri Lanka and in Brazil to directly select the plants. - Show-room in Paris. Founded in 1990 by Claudie Ravel, Guayapi was created following the establishment of strong friendships, with deep common interests. Starting with Warana (original name of Guarana in Sateré Mawé language), the company progressively began to expand the variety of plants used, both in food supplements and in a range of cosmetic products. The founder’s concerns with social and political issues led her to create a meaningful partnership with a tribe in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, the Sateré Mawé. Guayapi still maintains a very special connection with this tribe, far beyond that of a normal trade relationship. The Amazon Rainforest provides thousands of different plant species, which have been used for centuries by Native Indian tribes to treat an enormous variety of wounds and illnesses. Their knowledge is inexhaustible, but must be protected against the business interests of multinational corporations. At her level, Claudie Ravel supports the Sateré Mawé tribe in their daily fight to preserve their identity, culture and territory. Throughout her trips, she searches for indigenous plants, preferring to use traditional methods which respect the plants and don’t use of chemical processes of any kind. Guayapi is going from strength to strength across Europe, thanks to our appearance in television documentaries and magazine articles which have enhanced and spread our good reputation. The team truly appreciates concerns of consumers regarding ethical sourcing and the natural processing and content of products.
INTRODUCTION From the very heart of nature, GUAYAPI choses several Amazonian plants, known for their unique beneficial qualities. The Amazon rainforest is a giant laboratory, protecting tens of thousands of plant species, of which a hundred disappear everyday. A large majority of these plants still remain undiscovered. This knowledge should not only motivate action for the preservation and cultivation of existing species but also to bring light to new species possessing particular nutritional and pharmaceutical benefits. The most recent scientific studies have confirmed the knowledge held by indigenous people for centuries, concerning the benefits that these plants hold. The studies also highlight the unique capacity of certain plants to treat problems which are particularly prevalent in modern western society. The Sateré Mawé’s unbalanced diet and difficult way of life has enabled us to see just how effective these plants are in treating human problems. Guayapi produces food supplements and cosmetics using plants selected according to strict criteria, which ensure the purity of the plant material. Guayapi also ensures that all plants are sourced from their country of origin.

THE AMAZONIAN CONTINENT A botanical heaven Plants have been used in therapeutic remedies and as food supplements for thousands of years. During this time, although processing methods in some cases have changed very little, human understanding of how these plants function has greatly increased. Proof of the effectiveness of the plants used in our products does not merely rely on empirical observation or tradition, but is supported by the most recent scientific studies. There are still many species of Amazonian plant yet to be discovered, which may have great medicinal benefits. However, these rare species are being destroyed at the rate of 100 a day! Substances such as quinine, emetine, curare and derived products have all been discovered in the forest. If further discoveries are to be made, the Amazon must be protected! The Amazon Rainforest is widely recognised as the most important plant and animal reserve in the world. Yet, it is under grave threat of being destroyed by deforestation and intense exploitation, which is ruining soils and sub soils. The forest is a precious phytotherapeutic laboratory that needs to be saved! The wide recognition of the forest’s natural wealth and the fragility of its current state should aid the Amazonian populations in their fight for survival and the preservation and protection of their territory. Guayapi is working to protect the forest and its people. Guayapi selects and distributes plants in the forms of food supplements and cosmetics. Their beneficial properties are widely recognised specialists. Guayapi is also working to develop phytotherapeutic research in the regions where our plants are sourced.
QUALITY AT THE HEART OF THE PLANT In harmony with our commitment to ethical practices The criteria of selection for the plants used by Guayapi are: that the plants are sourced from their country of origin that the matter extracted from the plant is pure that no chemical preservatives are used in the cultivation process that all products are created using the totum, meaning that only one part of the plant (seeds, leaves, flesh e.t.c) is used in any one product. Guayapi uses the totum of the pant because the body can easily recognise and assimilate the substance when it is pure. In this way, adverse reactions are avoided. Each plant used is a complicated organism. The effect of the plant in its total does not simply amount to the sum effect of its parts, i.e using the flesh of the plant in conjunction with the plant’s other parts is likely to have a different effect than if the flesh were used by itself. Moreover, it is clear that any active substance identified in the plant has a more powerful effect to if the same substance were obtained by chemosynthesis.
There are two types of active substances in the plants 1. Primary metabolic products (essentially saccharides). These are the necessary substances for the survival of the plant. They are the result of photosynthesis. 2. Secondary metabolic products are the result of the assimilation of nitrogen. These include essential oils, resins, alkaloids, saponins, phytohormons which possess remarkable therapeutic effects.
3
The quality of our ingredients is assured by strictly following these principles: That rules concerning the cultivation and purity of soils are strictly followed That our plants are harvested at the optimum time of year, to ensure the best concentration of substances That the plants are manufactured following a traditional slow drying process and strict powdering conditions
PARTNER OF "FOREST GARDEN PRODUCTS" PROGRAM Guayapi holds an active partnership with "Forest Garden Products", an international organisation working in Brazil, Equator, Canada, Guatemala, Australia, Sri Lanka and many other countries. The aims of the program are: to promote the renewal of deforested and damaged lands to increase the fertility of soil and encourage local biodiversity to reduce erosion and improve yields to improve the living conditions of locals to stabilise and reverse present deforestation to change intensive chemical methods into organic and bio diversified ones to develop the added value of quality of the Forest Garden Products
Guayapi also works with F.G.P in Sri Lanka where we are interested in spices and crops which encourage biodiversity, such as curry powder, cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, cloves, cumin, pepper, cashew nuts. In July 2001 Guayapi Tropical began a project in conjunction with the Scientific Director of FGP, with the aim of transferring FGP’s knowledge on how to recreate and regenerate biodiversity. This transferral of knowledge is essential for the protection of the original forests (the analogue forests). The balance of their ecosystem rests on the biodiversity of the fauna and flora and respect for the local populations.

FAIRTRADE Guarana: the Sateré-Mawé people's ecological and cultural Sanctuary. Guayapi uses commercially Guarana grown in the wild in its land of origin, which is certified by the "Sateré-Mawé" label. Sateré-Mawé is the name of the Indian tribe living on this land. Their Warana is of a very high quality thanks to the pollutionfree environment in which it grows and is processed using traditional preparation processes: The nut is peeled and washed The nuts are dried at a consistently low temperature(softer than roasting) A grinding process which preserves the plants beneficial properties is used Thanks to the very personal nature of our relationship with the Sateré Mawé, we are able to fund the tribe in a way which supports community projects and takes into consideration the tribe’s very specific needs. Each box of Warana sold allows the C.G.S.M.T (General Council of the Sateré Mawé tribe) to: finance their schools improve living conditions refuse external governmental autonomous.

SELECTING AND PROCESSING HIGH QUALITY WARANA An effective product with no adverse side effects Quality is essential in selecting the plant THE TRADITIONAL MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF THE SATERE MAWE The Sateré Mawé tribe lives on the land from which Warana originated. “Warana” is guarana’s name in the Sateré Mawé’s own language but when the Portuguese arrived they changed the name to guarana, since there is no “w” in Portuguese language. To distinguish between Warana from its land of origin, prepared by the Indian tribe Sateré Mawé and any other guarana found in Brazil, in agreement with the Sateré, we took back the original name as a token of assurance of the product’s high quality. The Sateré Mawé know how to treat and transform this plant into an amazing natural aid, thanks to their inheritance of the knowledge of their ancestors, passed down through many generations. Thanks to this traditional process, the Sateré Mawé Indians always obtain high quality Warana which has no adverse effects. The Warana, which Guayapi has been processing and selling for 13 years, is goes through a careful traditional preparation process, which takes two months. The hull of the nut is peeled away in a mortar then washed and dried in the open air. Then the nuts are put on clay ovens powered by Muruçi wood to avoid any moisture. The temperature is carefully surveyed every day to make sure it stays low so that the nuts are not roasted. The Warana dehydrates slowly under the vigilant and respectful eye of the ancients, the guardians of tradition. This strict and slow process preserves the vitamins, minerals and tannins contained in the Warana nut. The tannins slow down the absorption of guaranin and allow the Warana to have a slow, steady effect, without causing the body any problems. This process comes entirely from the knowledge of the Sateré Mawé people. To process the lower range Guarana, the nut is burn during the roasting process which allows it to be processed quickly. This type of Guarana grows in full sunlight, enabling the crops to grow quickly and with a greater yield. In these cases, the combination of substances in the plant is very different and could have volatile effects. Prices for a high range Warana can be from 1 up to 20 times more expensive. We respect the individual needs of clients for a Warana at a quality and price which suites them.

The generous concentration of Borojo creates a richly nourishing shower gel, which regenerates all skin types and is particularly beneficial for dry skin.
