The ability to develop design icons - and to uncover them - runs in the Gubi family DNA. An eagle eye, together with a healthy dose of obstinacy and the courage to follow through an idea has been passed down from Lisbeth and Gubi Olsen to their sons Jacob and Sebastian Gubi, who today are responsible for managing the creative vision of the company that their parents founded in 1967. To be included in the Gubi collection, a piece must have that something special, by virtue of its design, its materials or its technology. We choose only designs that are unique, modern and classic, which are equally valid today as when they were first designed - that is, designs that are, or have the clear potential to become, design icons. In addition to the 1930’s Bauhaus inspired Bestlite Collection, Gubi’s rich and varied portfolio currently includes iconic 1950’s reissues by Greta Grossman, Barba Corsini, Jacques Adnet and Mathieu Matégot, 1960’s pieces by Bonderup and Thorup and Jens

Quistgaard and Gubi Olsen’s 1980’s distinctive upholstered furniture collection. Recent collaborations with contemporary designers who share the company’s aims and aesthetic, notably Komplot Design, GamFratesi, Henning Larsen and Paul Leroy, have resulted in award-winning designs such as the Gubi Chair, designed by Komplot design in 2003 and the Masculo chair, designed by GamFratesi in 2011.

A collection that covers both a wide geographical area and timeline, but always with a focus on our core values.

All Gubi pieces are developed in close cooperation with the designers, with the ultimate aim of producing beautiful, authentic, innovative and functional designs of the highest quality and who, in turn, will add new stories to the saga. Gubi will continue to Since the beginning in 1967, Gubi’s core philosophy collaborate with contemporary designers who share has been to create beautifully crafted and timeless our vision and aesthetic while we celebrate the past designs, with aesthetics, innovation, functionality by reissuing for the forgotten gems. and quality as guiding principles. Over the years, this philosophy has evolved and Gubi is now also focused on sourcing and reproducing design icons from the past – to build a classic collection of design icons from 1930 to the present. The Grossman Collection 1950 Designed by Greta Grossman

California Modernism

Grossman was highly influenced by European Modernism, which had been imported to the US by influential architects, such as Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. Grossman, in turn, played a significant role in defining the aesthetic of midcentury Californian Modernism. Although the Swedish-born designer and architect, designed for several companies during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s it is almost impossible to find original pieces of her work today. Her furniture, along with the houses she designed, was often custom-built or produced in exceptionally small numbers. Greta Magnusson Grossman [1906 - 1999]

The iconic Gräshoppa lamp was first produced in 1947 and in 1950, the Cobra lamp won the Good Design Award and was subsequently exhibited at the Good Design Show at the Museum of Modern Art. The adventure continues with the reissue of some of Grossman’s best-known furniture designs from her “62-series”, designed in 1952 and so-named because the designs were deemed to be ten years ahead of their time. Everything is unique in their lightness of form and elegant, asymmetric lines.

The Pedrera Collection 1953 Designed by Barba Corsini & Joaquim Ruiz Millet

spanish Modernism

Many architects and furniture designers of the Bauhaus era were intent on providing well-designed homes and impeccably manufactured furnishings for the “common man”. in 1955, Barba Corsini, a leading functionalist architect, realised his contemporary vision through his renovation of the loft space and the furnishings he custom designed for “La Pedrera”.’

Barba Corsini [1910 - 2001] Joaquim Ruiz Millet [1955 - ]

Corsini was a great admirer of Finnish architecture, which he believed to be the finest in Europe on account of the powerful simplicity of the designs. ‘Powerful simplicity’ is indeed an apt description of Corsini’s personal design style, as represented by the Pedrera series.

The Pedrera lamps are both modern and classic. Some of the lamps were designed by Barba CorAntoni Gaudi, who originally designed “La Pe- sini, others in association with his protegé, Joaquim drera”, is generally considered the great master of Ruiz Millet. The ABC Table Lamp, was designed Spanish Modernism but his unique body of work in 2011 by Ruiz Millet as a tribute to Corsini. cannot be defined by any single style or simple classification.

danish functionalism

Jens Quistgaard was an original thinker, an entrepreneur, an innovator and a prolific designer. Through his collaboration with Ted Nierenberg, Quistgaard designed more than 4,500 products before his death in 2008. One of his most successful furniture designs is the distinctive Quistgaard Safari Chair, designed in 1965. The chair is one of a kind and today is considered an international design classic.

tionalists focused primarily on functionality at the expense of aesthetics and produced a number of buildings that are characterized by straight angles, flat roofs, and a rugged kind of austerity, evoked by the minimally decorated concrete slabs that the buildings themselves are made of.

Quistgaard’s designs have been awarded numerous prizes and are in the permanent collections at both The term Danish Functionalism is used to describe the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the the Danish branch of functionalist architecture, Louvre in Paris. which had its heyday in the 1960s. The Semi Collection 1968 Designed by Bonderup & Thorup

danish functionalism

The Semi lamp was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between two architecture students, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup. Reacting against the ‘cosy era’ that was dominating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create a lamp that incorporated sharp, clean lines and a geometric shape. Their design was submitted for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and won first prize. Semi is a uniquely shaped pendant lamp. It is based on the meeting of two quarter circles, put back-toClaus Bonderup [1943 - ] Torsten Thorup [1944 - ] 40

back. The dimension of these is equivalent to the diameter of the lamp shade – so everything is in balance. With its distinctive arch-shaped, enamelled metal shade, lightness of form and unique, timeless design, the elegant Semi lamp achieved great success in the 1980’s and became, at that time, the bestselling Danish design, gaining worldwide recognition and iconic status.

The Gubi Collection 1982 Designed by Gubi Olsen

post modernism

Gubi Olsen, founder of Gubi, has always pushed the boundaries to explore new directions in design. Always with a global outlook he has created his own unique post-modernistic expression. The inspiration comes from the rich Danish tradition of craft and furniture production, mixed with historical and visual references such as, French cinema, Napoleon Bonaparte and a grand piano. Gubi Olsen together with his wife, Lisbeth Olsen, founded GUBI A/S in 1967. Over the years, the

contemporary design

One of Gubi’s most innovative products, the Gubi Chair collection, was designed by Boris Berlin and Poul Christiansen of Komplot Design. The Gubi Chair was the first furniture design ever to be based on the innovative technique of moulding three-dimensional veneer. The 3-D design gives the chair a comfortable seat and sense of lightness. Groundbreaking technology allows the thickness of the veneer to be reduced to half that normally used. contemporary design

With simple, classic lines and beautiful wooden tabletops, the versatile Y! table enhances any room. Y! Table was designed by Henning Larsen Architects for Gubi in 2009. The Y! Table is notable both for the simplicity of its form and its construction; it is functional, thoughtful and contemporary. Designed without architraves around the tabletop edge, the elegant steel table leg is angled towards the centre of the top, creating the illusion that the

tabletop is floating. The name is a reference to the point where the leg meets the table top – creating a y-shape. The table collection is available as a dining and bar version in several sizes. With its many combinations it is suited to all types of homes.
