GRYPHON CAMPS KIDS ACTIVITY & SPORTS SPECIFIC

MISSION STATEMENT

Our purpose is to support the mission of the Department of Athletics and to improve the quality of life of all campers by providing opportunities for growth, leadership and total human development through physical activity and creative endeavours.

CAMP STAFF

Our instructors are primarily University/College students, graduates, and varsity athletes. Some camp staff are older High School students who work closely with our senior staff. All successful applicants have been thoroughly interviewed, and many have been a part of our team for several summers. All Gryphon Camp staff participate in extensive training, are certified in Emergency First Aid and CPR, and have clear Police Record Checks. We also offer the opportunity for High School students to fulfill community service volunteer hours (participants must be a minimum of 15 years old). See page 38 for details.

YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY

All Gryphon Activity Camp Instructors are certified in Emergency First Aid and CPR to ensure a top quality, and most importantly, safe camp experience for your child. Camp staff complete extensive training on camp specific safety measures including emergency procedures. Additional topics discussed include: custody arrangements, child abuse, behaviour modification, weather conditions and self-esteem. All of our camp programs have a 1:9 (staff:camper) ratio to ensure high quality supervision. Our Mini-Gryphs camp program has a 1:5 ratio. While using the swimming pool, certified lifeguards are present at all times as well as the camp instructors. Children take part in a swimming test at the beginning of the first swimming session each week. If your child is not a strong enough swimmer, they will wear a Personal Flotation Device at all times. Safety is our first concern. Campers are required to bring their own sunscreen and hat (younger children will be assisted with sunscreen).

SIGN-IN/SIGN-OUT PROCEDURES

Our procedures are intended to keep your child safe. You will be asked to sign your child in with Gryphon Camp Instructors each morning. At the end of the day, you will be asked to sign your child out with an instructor. You will be required to show photo I.D. at sign out. At the parent’s discretion, you can waive the sign-in/sign-out requirement during your registration process. All sign-in/sign-out locations are indicated on the camp pages. If on any day your child is unable to attend camp, you must contact us at 519-824-4120, ext. 56131 (please use this phone number and extension only).

EXTENDED SUPERVISION

Gryphon Camps offers FREE supervision from 8am until camp starts, and until 5pm after camp ends! Post-supervision is available between 5-6pm for an additional $25 per camper, per week. Please indicate at time of registration.

The Gryphon Camp Experience

Sending your child to camp for the first time is a new experience for both you and your child. This section is designed to help you understand a day in the life of a Gryphon Camper and allow you to determine if your child is ready for Gryphon Camps.

PRIOR TO CAMP

The Thursday before your camp experience you will receive a camp newsletter through email. This newsletter will provide you with specific information regarding the upcoming camp program and changes noted to the program and other imperative information for camp (packing list, themes, parking). The newsletter will state the exact location for your sign-in on Day 1 of camp.

Drop-off and pick-up locations are shown for each camp on the description page in this ribbon.

SIGN-IN / SIGN-OUT

All of our campers come together in common areas for sign-in and sign-out each day. For most of our camps we sign in and out of three main locations: the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphon Field House, and the Gryphon Centre Arena. This means there are a lot of children in one area during these times and it can appear chaotic, and perhaps overwhelming at first. Rest assured that our camp staff are there to greet your child, engage your child in camp activities and to help them feel welcome. If your child is not adjusting well to the sign-in activities, please talk with our camp staff. We do find that some children are much more comfortable in their smaller groups (see groups below). Please be prepared on Monday mornings, as there may be short line ups at sign-in while our camp staff confirms your child’s information. There are signs in all of our facilities identifying where each camp is gathering.

GROUPS

Each camp is split into smaller groups based on age and skill. We maintain a 1:9 ratio of paid staff to campers at all times, and often we have volunteers and Junior Leaders assisting with our camp groups. Throughout the day, the smaller groups form a large group for activities such as swimming, tournaments, and special guests. It is important that your child understands that they must remain with their group at all times, even during all camp events during the day. It can be tempting for them to try to find a brother or sister or friend in another group, but if a camper leaves a group this could cause a very serious situation. If a camper would like to be grouped with another camper, we are happy to do our best to accommodate this. Please make this request at the time of registration.

ACTIVITY CAMPS

Our Activity Camps include everything from pages 28-38. These camps are designed for a general activity level. All weeks of Activity Camp have a theme that the main activities are based on. However, some sport games, low intensity games, and swimming may not focus on the theme. Each week there will also be either a guest speaker, special event, or a field trip (Senior Activity, Girls Inc., and Boys Week Out). It is important to note that for field trips we have a better than 1:9 ratio and senior camp staff or senior Athletics staff accompany the groups. It is especially important for your child to stay with their group during field trips. 22

QUESTIONS? 519-824-4120 ext. 56131 or email camps@uoguelph.ca

SPORT CAMPS

Sport Camps have a more focused approach to skill development and these camps are very active. There will be some non-sport related activities, but for most of the day they will be playing their camp specific sport. Elite sport camps have a specific skill curriculum, while all of the other sport camps focus on having fun while learning a new sport or improving skills. Campers will be grouped based on skill and age. It is important to note that our sport camps welcome all campers – from beginners to those who have been playing for many years. All sport camps have some form of competition or tournament at the end of each week.

CAMPER READINESS

Only you and your child can determine if your child is ready for camp, and often the best way to determine that is to have a conversation with them. Discuss with them what they can expect at camp. Some key things they must be prepared for in order to have a successful camp experience include: • Be comfortable in both large and small group settings with children they may not know, and be able to get along with them • Be comfortable taking directions from camp staff and following directions • Stay with their group • Be active, but also communicate with camp staff if they need a break • Apply sunscreen or understand the importance of sunscreen and ask an instructor for help applying • Understand the importance of snacks, lunch and water, and be able to manage their food and drinks on their own or able to ask an instructor for help • Dress themselves, know when they have to go to the washroom and ask to go • Keep track of and carry their own backpack All camps swim at least once a day (other than Mini Gryphs). While we encourage all campers to participate in all swims, some campers are not ready. In this case, staff are assigned to remain out of the pool and will have activities for our non-swimmers. We strive for all of our camps to be accessible, and will work with you to help your child transition to camp. Please share any concerns with us so that we can help your child thrive at camp. For example, we can direct you to resources such as The Canadian Mental Health Association. Please also feel free to contact our camps office at 519-824-4120 ext. 56131 or camps@uoguelph.ca. If we feel that your child is not ready for camp and have exhausted all means to ensure their success at camp, we reserve the right to refund your remaining camp fee and ask that they return when they are more prepared for camp.

“The Gryphon Activity Camps offer a great program – wonderful counsellors, great variety and overall a great experience. What a joy it is to have your child excited to go to camp the next day! I would highly recommend it to any family!” Parent of Camper, 2017

AGES 3-5

Mini Gryphs is designed specifically for young children ages 3-5 who are new to camp. This camp will focus on the important elements of social, physical and educational development. This play-based program gives children the opportunity to socialize and develop fine & gross motor skills in order to prepare them for a camp environment. This program will provide your child with the tools to successfully transition into Junior Activity Camp in the future. We are excited to grow great Gryphons! Mini Gryphs offers a smaller instructor to camper ratio so focus can be placed on building attachments between the instructor and your child. With a ratio of 1:5, your child will feel more comfortable in a smaller group setting, as instructors will be able to provide individual attention. Several instructors in this program will have a background in Child, Youth Family Studies or are Early Childhood Educators. Please note that we do not offer a 1:1 ratio. For more information on how to acquire a 1:1 worker while your child is in camp, please contact camps@uoguelph.ca. Please note that daily swims are not part of this program. AGES 9-13

An emphasis will be placed on the campers interacting and learning about themselves through a variety of group challenges and activities. Outcomes of this program include campers gaining an understanding of how to work with others, think outside the box and develop both “hard” and “soft” skills. Activities may include: indoor rock climbing, outdoor survival adventures, daily recreational swim, cooperative initiatives, sports, opportunities to be leader of the day, as well as an off-campus trip. Under the direction of our positive male role models, we will provide our campers with diverse programming. Campers will leave Thursday afternoon and return by 4pm on Friday. Campers are responsible for their own pillow and sleeping bag, air mattresses are optional. Tents will be provided, but we do ask that if you have a tent and able to share with others, please bring it on this overnight excursion. Each week there is an off-campus excursion that takes place on Thursday, with the rain date being Friday, unless otherwise noted. Visit gryphons.ca ‘Boys Week Out’ camp page for weekly excursion details. Registration fee includes Gryphons Camp T-shirt. Rock CLIMBING

AGES 9 - 14

Youth are now exploring adventure pursuits that allow them to push themselves, set goals, and build strength and character. In conjunction with the Gryphon Climbing Club, we aim to teach youth about this sport and have fun while learning about a popular adventure sport.

Our Rock Wall tops out at 40’ in height and boasts up to 17 different routes. There is a mixture of top rope climbing routes and bouldering routes for the campers to climb and strengthen their climbing abilities. While participating on the climbing wall, youth will build confidence in themselves and appreciate the importance of teamwork, safety, setting goals, and supporting others. The skills learned on the rock wall will transfer into their daily lives. Each camper will progress at a different pace throughout the week and will be grouped with those of the same ability. Groups will learn specific climbing techniques, how to tie climbing knots, distinguish between top rope climbing and bouldering, become familiar with climbing terminology & equipment, how to warm up, and injury prevention. All campers will be supervised by trained climbing staff who will facilitate their climbing routes and belay. All equipment for rock climbing (harness and rock shoes) will be provided. Throughout each day, campers will also participate in climbing preparation exercises, outdoor group initiatives that support teamwork, as well as a daily recreational swim. ROCK CLIMBING 2.0: To register for Rock Climbing 2.0 (Aug 20-24) campers must have participated in a previous Gryphon Rock Climbing Camp Program. Rock Climbing 2.0 will include advanced rock climbing techniques and an off-site trip to another climbing facility. Registration fee includes Gryphons Camp T-shirt. Camp Program runs 9am-4pm. Supervised drop-off 8-9am & pick-up 4-5pm at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre - Rock Wall Centre. DATE

Leadership 2.0

AGES 14-16

Leadership 2.0 is an extension of Leadership 101. All participants in this program must have completed Leadership 101 or have approval from the Active Kids Coordinator. This is a two week program that further develops individual leadership, team dynamics, entrepreneurship, organizational management, and business operations.

During the first week we will revisit key leadership concepts through initiatives. We will build upon these learnings with experiential workshops on marketing, working in a group environment, facilitating group discussions, finances, public speaking and important traits required to be a successful entrepreneur. Participants will create their own business or organization and then present to their peers and University of Guelph staff. Through this process Leadership 2.0 participants will learn about their own personal character strengths, time management, engaging the public, creating awareness, and recognizing how decisions can be made effectively and efficiently. After the first week of workshops, participants will select one week for an in-camp experience as a Junior Leader similar to Leadership 101, but will be given more responsibility in planning and facilitating activities with campers. They will continue to receive feedback to strengthen their skills. By the end of the two weeks, participants will be able to transfer their knowledge into a variety of different leadership environments or opportunities at school or in the community. They will have the “tools to go out and not only be our future, but also be our present leaders. The Gryphons Activity Camp Director along with the Active Kids Coordinator, work together closely to create a strong support structure for each individual. Our senior camp leadership team are positive role models that will always be close by to assist and encourage positive self-development. Near the end of the summer a Leadership Graduation will be hosted to celebrate everyone that has completed the program (both in-class workshops and in-camp experience weeks). basketball

AGES 6-10 / 11-16

The Gryphons Basketball camp is designed to assist participants in a variety of basketball skills and techniques. This recreational sport camp will allow each camper to develop specific age appropriate and ability appropriate techniques, recognize important team concepts, understand the fundamentals of basketball, and further their passion for the sport.

While at camp each participant will partake in warm-up and stretching, skill development taught by fully certified National Coaching Certification Program Instructors, daily recreational swim, team practices and scrimmages with their camp coach, off-court teambuilding activities, and “Championship Day” on the final day. The staff are mainly comprised of current Gryphon Men’s and Women’s Varsity team members under the direction of Chris O’Rourke, Gryphon Men’s Head Basketball Coach. This relationship with the players is invaluable as campers can connect and learn from “local” stars and talk to them about their shared love for the sport. As this is a recreational camp, previous experience is not necessary. All campers will be divided into age appropriate and ability level groups on the first day of camp. This allows for skills sessions to be successful and promote individual growth in basketball. Registration fee includes Gryphons Camp T-shirt, basketball, and lunch provided on “Championship Day”.
