OFSAA HISTORY OFSAA History In 1948 OFSAA was founded without any full-time staff or a permanent office. It officially became the governing body of high school sports in Ontario in 1952, and has grown significantly over the past seven decades. When OFSAA started in 1948 there were just six official provincial Championships for high school sports – track & field, cross country, hockey, football, basketball, and gymnastics. Currently there are 45 Championships and Festivals contested at the OFSAA level with sports including everything from rugby to snowboarding to golf. The growth of OFSAA over the years is also representative of the growth in population and schools in Ontario. OFSAA has expanded from seven to 18 associations, from 300 to over 850 schools, 5500 teacher-coaches to 18,000 teacher-coaches, and from 85,000 student-athletes to more than 280,000! In 2008 OFSAA unveiled a versatile new logo in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the organization. It was the first time the logo had been redesigned since 1948. It’s an ongoing history and one OFSAA is happy to share as we continue to provide education through school sport to generation after generation.

COACHING CREED

COACHING CREED

Coaching Creed

Be a resourceful person able to assist the athlete to develop his/her athletic potential and self-dependency. Recognize individual differences in athletes and always think of the athlete's long-term best interests. Aim for excellence based upon realistic goals and the athlete's growth and development. Lead by example. Teach and practise cooperation, selfdiscipline, respect for officials and opponents and proper attitudes in language, dress and deportment. Make sport challenging and fun. Skills and techniques need not be learned painfully. Be honest and consistent with athletes. They appreciate knowing where they stand. Be prepared to interact with the media, league officials and parents. They too have important roles to play in sport. Coaching involves training by responsible people who are flexible and willing to continually learn and develop. Physical fitness should be a lifelong goal for all Canadians. Encourage athletes to be fit all year, every year and not just for the season.

CODE OF ETHICS A P P E N D I X II OFSAAof CODE Ethics OF ETHICS FOR COACHES Coaches Code TO OFSAA CHAMPIONSHIPS 1

I. Respect for Participants The principle of respect for participants challenges coaches to act in a manner respectful of the dignity of all participants in sport. Fundamental to this principle is the basic assumption that each person has value and is worthy of respect. Acting with respect for participants means that coaches: (i)

do not make some participants more or less worthy as persons than others on the basis of gender, race, place of origin, athletic potential, colour, sexual orientation, religion, political beliefs, socioeconomic status, marital status, age or other conditions;

(ii)

have a responsibility to respect and promote the rights of all participants;

(iii) interact with others in a manner that enables all participants in sport to maintain their dignity; and (iv) build mutual support among fellow coaches, officials, spectators, athletes and their family members. II. Responsible Coaching The principle of responsible coaching carries the basic ethical expectation that the activities of coaches will benefit society in general and participants in particular and will do no harm. Fundamental to the implementation of this principle is the notion of competence – responsible coaching (maximizing benefits and minimizing risks to participants) is performed by coaches who are "well prepared and current" in their discipline. In addition, responsible coaching means that coaches: (i) act in the best interest of the athlete's development as a whole person; (ii) recognize the power inherent in the position of coach; (iii) are aware of their personal values and how these affect their practice as coaches; (iv) acknowledge the limitations of their discipline; and (v) accept the responsibility to work with other coaches and professionals in sport. III. Integrity in Relationships Integrity means that coaches are expected to be honest, sincere and honourable in their relationships with others. Acting on these values is most possible when coaches possess a high degree of self-awareness and the ability to reflect critically on how their perspectives influence their interactions with others. In being faithful to the principle of integrity in relationships, coaches would adhere to the following ethical standards:
