Al Singleton coached men’s hockey from
1955-1967. He brought innovation and a calm demeanor to the program and during the 1957-58 year, led the team to an undefeated season. The 1957-58 OA-VC Redmen won Guelph its first ever men’s hockey championship. Coach Singleton left such an impression on his players that fifty years later, they honoured his memory and the impact that he had upon them, with the creation of the Al Singleton Men’s Hockey Scholarship. The scholarship was announced at the inaugural Hockey Day in Gryphonville event in 2008 and will continue in recognition of the legacy Coach Singleton left on the hockey program at the University of Guelph. Men from this 1957-58 championship team gather each year at the Hockey Day in Gryphonville event to celebrate their coach, mentor and friend, Al Singleton.
